I occasionally get a bit of an interesting "third angle" view of things when I think about smash hits like the Potterverse and their successes and variable downfalls. It's fairly simple, really:
Consider how many books were printed when the publishing model became accessible to the masses. In Honoré de Balzac's "Lost Illusions", we get a glimpse at a Parisian publishing scene that was as rabid, back in its day, as the crypto market was a few months back. You had a shitty idea? You got published.
You get a book deal, you get a book deal, EVERYONE GETS A BOOK DEAL!
Cool, right? The one problem is that the books that made it through History and over to us were selected and recognized for their quality. For every Robinson Crusoe, there's dozens of authors who either were never meaningfully recorded by history - or worse, who were massive hits in their day but who are now forgotten.
Visit a book fair and look for collected Adventure serials; you'll find hundreds of Alexandre Dumas copycats trying to gin up the popularity of the then-serial Count of Monte Cristo with narratives of their own. Narratives that fail at capturing the imagination in quite the same way as Dumas' work.
Look at the modern publishing sphere and it's obvious that Rowling is in something of a similar position. Right now, whether you agree with her or not, she's a hot commodity. Right now, HBO is rushing to adapt her juvenilia into a ten-season behemoth out of the misplaced assurance that it'll be as gangbusters as Game of Thrones was for its first few seasons.
Even if it is, even if my grandkids grow up sorted by their Hogwarts Houses because the fucking Stupid Magic Series can't leave the zeitgeist, know that it eventually will.
Eventually, the only ones left to dwell on Harry Potter and its derivative works will be media scholars specializing in the dissection of Pop Culture materials, the sorts who buy books at dusty book fairs and who pirate material relentlessly because they work for a department that has a shoestring budget. Nothing lasts forever, and there's a day in the far-flung future that'll see someone sell the entire series for a couple bucks. They'll never have read it and never will have cared, because something else will have taken Harry Potter's place.
So, to the detractors - rest assured, this series isn't Classic Lit material. It'll sink into the sidelines of specialized Undergraduate programs or in the wheelhouses of Sociology teachers tracking how Pop Culture repurposes folk magic.
To the fans - just remember that your own grandkids won't connect with the Potterverse. They likely won't connect with the MCU or the DCEU, either - much less Star Wars. Very few are the media properties who become more than basic household names, phenomenons like Dracula killing it in book fairs and surviving off of the popularity of vampires for a hundred and twenty-six straight years are almost unheard of.
After all, the second-best fate a book can hope for is to be regurgitated by a myriad of other authors. Not everyone reads the Epic of Gilgamesh but we've all read something that lifts from the Epic.
What this means is that you liking this over another franchise is, in the grand scheme of things, generally harmless. Reading a book never killed anyone, and we'll eventually reach a point where there won't be a Rowling estate left, no active transphobic organisms to promote by purchasing these books and derivative products - especially not if book fairs and flea markets are considered. The bigots are going to find themselves another sacrificial lamb, and we'll reach a point where despite all the ink that's flowed on Rowling's transphobia, the average curious bookworm's going to be left thinking "There's transphobic stuff in this old-ass book series? Really?!"
Most of everything ever written ends up forgotten. Even now, movies and video games are falling victim to legal abandonment. Life goes on, studies are funded and, I'm certain of it - the greater LGBTQA cause will keep advancing. Rowling's transphobia feels like a tsunami that could wash away years of popular support in some areas, but it's likely more of a tiny stream in an otherwise-dry valley.
Rest easy - nobody's going to give a shit about which Hogwarts House you've been sorted in; and it'll happen fairly soon on the scope of all of Literature's recorded works.
It's just in human nature to want to focus on the Next Shiny Thing.
i agree it's tactically sound to reframe harry potter as a Loser Brand for Losers, since all the transphobia clearly isn't slowing its fanbase down. they don't feel guilt, the consumerism patches over it, so instead... make the consumption painful, shameful. treat it like Ghostbusters: a franchise doddering into the senior home, while its fans slobber for a new movie to turn them young again
like relentlessly. always talk about HP in the context of manchildren refusing to let go of their fifth grade level reading. talk about it like it's got the literary complexity of a crossword puzzle. treat them like they're eating kid cuisine every meal of the day. baby like their baby book? gonna watch the spooky wizard show? that's nice sweetie, but the bills and the kids and the rest of the world are waiting for you, whenever you feel like changing out of your pajamas

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Few months had passed since the first day of Hogwarts. Things with your family were getting worse each day. You received letters from them on a daily basis, all of them saying how much of a disappointment and waste of time you were. You felt as if you were a piece of trash. Your mother made sure of it.
You became lonely, quite literally. You were studying during the day, and sleeping or just thinking at nights. Sometimes you would even sneak out in the Astronomy Tower late at nights, just to be alone.
Hermione, Harry and Ron became concerned, but you were shrugging them off and keeping your distance. Harry, being the Sherlock Holmes he was, became suspicious and tried everything to get you to say something, but you were mastered in hiding and keeping secrets.
Little did you know that a certain platinum blond haired boy was growing suspicious as well.
One day, you were sitting in the library, pretending to read, but all you could think of, was a letter your mother has sent you earlier that day, which was laying innocently on the table in front of you. Shame, disgrace, disappointment, waste of time. You were sick and tired of those words, you just wanted to get rid of them, but they kept wandering inside your head, never leaving.
You heard footsteps approaching you, pulling you out of your train of thoughts. You looked up to be met with Malfoy, Goyle and Zabini. Again, something was wrong with the Slytherin Prince. He was quiet, it seemed like he wasn’t the one who was leading the latter two.
Goyle walked forward and leaned on the table with his elbows. He looked at the letter and took it in his hands. He opened his mouth to say something, but you interrupted by standing up and snatching the letter out of his hands harshly.
“If you’re going to tell me how much of a shame and disgrace I am, don’t waste your time. Believe me, you don’t have to. I have already been told that more than enough times.” You said without thinking and immediately regretted it. Your voice was quiet, but firm. You turned around and walked out of the library.
The three boys looked at each other with the same expression that said ‘what the hell did just happen’. Neither understood what happened. This only caused one of them to grow even more suspicious.
Christmas was approaching. Everyone was happy, happy to spend time with their families, happy to spend time with their loved ones. Everyone except you. You didn’t want to go home, no, not home, your parents’ manor. You wanted to stay at Hogwarts, but you would get into a huge trouble, and getting in trouble with your parents wasn’t very… pleasant.
You were sitting in the Great Hall, at the Gryffindor house table, when Harry approached you, a little hesitantly.
“Hey,” he started softly, “Are you sure you’re fine?”
You were fighting the urge to roll your eyes, “Yes Harry, I am fine, really. Don’t worry.” You gave him the fakest smile ever, and he bought it.
But Malfoy didn’t… he was watching from afar.
The letters your parents sent you every day and night were very shitty. That’s how you ended up in Moaning Myrtle’s lavatory, sobbing your eyeballs out. You were leaning against the sink, looking in the mirror and sobbing uncontrollably while Myrtle told you that everything would be fine.
“No Myrtle, nothing will be fine. Ever.” You said in the middle of sobs.
“Talk to your parents then.” Myrtle said in her dreamy, high-pitched voice.
You laughed bitterly at her statement, your voice coming out loud and harsh, a maniacal sound that would make a person wince. “Talk to my parents? Oh, but they are the very reason why I am sobbing the shit out of myself right now Myrtle. Do you know how they treat me? Can you even imagine the pain they put me through? Let me guess. No! You don’t! You can’t! Has your father ever beat you until you were bleeding?! Has your mother ever used Cruciatus curse on you?! And that’s because of this whole pureblood supremacy shit! Because of the house you are put in! I am tired Myrtle, tired of standing strong for 16 goddamn years! I deserve some break.” You said, rising your voice every time you would swear.
It was crystal clear that Myrtle was shocked, “Talk to your friends, or your headmaster then. That is abuse, it needs to stop.”
“I can’t! If I say a word about this, they will most definitely kill me. I don’t give two shits if I die, no. I just don’t want to be killed by them! And about friends, I do not have any. And do you know why? Because I can’t have any! I don’t want to put any of my friends in danger or be put in danger because of them!” You looked in the mirror, then lowered your head once again and started crying.
After few minutes of brutal silence and your quiet sobs, you looked up and wiped away your tears with the palms of your hands.
“You know what,” you started, looking at Myrtle, “do you know how high the Astronomy Tower is?”
Myrtle looked really confused now, “Why?”
“Oh, just wanted to go up there, gaze at the sky, but I have a terrible fear of highs, you see…”
It was a lie, of course, but Myrtle bought it. After all, parents like yours were good at rising flawless liars.
“It’s high, indeed, but I don’t think you will be scared. Platform is huge.”
You faked a sad smile and thanked her, “Thank you, I’ll see you soon.” You walked out of the bathroom. “Or not.” You mumbled to yourself, thinking nobody heard you. But someone did. This someone being very annoying Draco Lucius Malfoy.
He spied on you the whole time and to make matters even worse, he heard every single word you said. So, obviously, he followed you.
When you reached the Astronomy Tower, you headed straight towards the edge and looked out.
“Oh my god, what am I doing?!” You asked yourself out loud.
You slightly leaned forward, when two strong arms cuffed your wrists and turned you around. A soft gasp escaped from your mouth at this sudden action. However, you were shocked when you saw who did this.
Draco Fucking Malfoy
“What the hell?! Were you actually planning to jump out of there?!” He asked. But what confused you more was the anger latched on his face.
“Why do you care?” You asked in a quiet tone.
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because you were going to commit suicide!” his voice was firm and stern, but dripping with sarcasm at the same time.
“Yeah, but why do you care?! Not that we’re friends or anything. You have been making my life miserable since the day I stepped my foot in the Great Hall for the first time, and now you care all of a sudden?!” You hissed through gritted teeth, your voice coming out venomous, a bit louder this time. You didn’t know why, but him being angry at you for attempting to end your life, for attempting to end all this pain and leave this hell forever, made you angry too. He was one of the people who made you hate your life, made you hate yourself, and now he was suddenly scolding you for trying to end it all. You didn’t know why, but it made you boil with anger.
What made you even angrier was that he didn’t say anything, he just stood there, looking down at the cold floor of the tower, completely silent. Why do you care?! Your voice echoed in his head, sounding louder and louder every second. Why did he care? You were right. He had been making your life a living hell since the day one, he had been the one to approach you for no reason and call you the most insulting, disgusting, and horrible names ever. He had been the one to make fun of you in front of everyone and make you feel insanely insecure. After all the things he did, why did he care? Maybe it was guilt eating him out, maybe he didn’t ever realize how much you were hurting, how much you were going through, until very now. But for some reason, he felt bad, he felt defeated, and he hated every second of it.
You were tired, exhausted by stress, crying and all the emotions. You were feeling nauseous. You wanted to drop down and pass out for hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries. You didn’t care, you just wanted to disappear, vanish. You were weak, too weak, but you still stood there, looking at the young man in front of you, who was staring down at his shoes like a child who broke a vase, waiting for him to look up. Under any other circumstances it would be almost cute, but not now. Not when you were about to end your life, not when the boy in front of you was someone who played a big part in your decision.
Silence was brutal. None of you saying a word, waiting for the other to speak up. Waiting for the other to say something, anything. You stood there, glaring at him like a mother glares at her son when she grounds him.
You couldn’t take it anymore, so you broke the silence by chuckling. But it was not the funny type of chuckle. No, it was bitter, venomous, painful chuckle. Anyone could hear the pain in your voice, anyone could see the pain in your eyes, pain was the only thing that radiated from you. It always had been.
“That’s what I thought.” You said and sighed deeply, “Listen Malfoy, forget about everything, and I mean everything you heard and witnessed today. And don’t you dare say a word about this to anyone.” You said and walked past him and down the stairs, your shoulder brushing against his in a cold manner.
He still didn’t move. He didn’t know what to do. He knew he couldn’t tell anyone, anyway. This was the pureblood family you were talking about. Rules are different there. Finally, he shook himself out of his trance and walked down the steps, trying to be as quiet as possible, since it was already past curfew and the last thing he wanted was Filch catching him.
Slytherin common room was expectedly empty. He was positive he would fall into a deep sleep the moment his head would hit the pillow, but he couldn’t go to his dorm just yet. He was still thinking about what happened just few minutes ago. As much as he wanted to forget it, he couldn’t. Can you even imagine the pain they put me through? He could never have imagined that you were going through this much. Let me guess. No! You don’t! You can’t! Yes, he couldn’t. Has your father ever beat you until you were bleeding?! And here he thought his father was the most horrible person. Has your mother ever used Cruciatus curse on you?! He could never even think of his mother being that brutal. And that’s because of this whole pureblood supremacy shit! Because of the house you are put in! I am tired, tired of standing strong for 16 goddamn years! I deserve some break. You were right, you really did deserve some break.
He felt horrible, he felt disgusted by your parents, he felt bad for you. Oh, come on Draco! Why do you feel bad?! She probably deserves that.
His brain said all of that rubbish, but his heart seemed to disagree. It screamed loudly, louder than his brain, You pathetic little idiot! How can you say that?! No live being deserves that, not even a cockroach!
Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t realize how he ended up on the emerald green couch in front of a lit fireplace. He dropped his head in his hands, elbows resting on his knees. Taking deep breaths, he began to relax a little. He looked up and stared down at fire, warm and welcoming, yet roaring and dangerous. He didn’t know how long he had been sitting there. Maybe for few minutes, maybe even hours. But he didn’t care. All he could think of right now was you.
He didn’t know why he had a sudden urge to help you, he didn’t know why he had the sudden urge to just hold you until your sobs would calm down. He had never felt this way. It confused him. He never cared about you, but for some reason, hearing your cries made his heart shatter into many pieces. Had it been any other person, he would feel sorry for them, he would pity them, but this was definitely not pity. This was… he didn’t know either. But it felt strange.
Standing up, he took one last deep breath and headed towards his dorm room, where he could finally get his long awaited sleep.

Starman - Chapter Three
Pairing: Sirius Black x Potter!reader
Summary: after feeling overshadowed by your twin brother, your best friend persuades you to get more involved with school activities. You weren't counting on falling for Sirius Black.
Warnings: fluff, angst if you squint, jealous Sirius
A/N: I know that the stereotypical Amortentia lesson usually happens in 6th year but had to make it a little different! And, no I didn't put the 6th year Slytherins with the 7th year Gryffindors just to write this one scene, why would you think that? Can you also tell I'm trying to include Peter which is hard bc I hate him so much! Please let me know what you think and if you would like to be tagged! xxx

Chapter Three
The Gryffindors and the Slytherins were waiting outside the dungeons for their potion master to arrive. Slughorn had the tendency to arrive 5 minutes late to class which was great it you were going to be late yourself but not so great if you were on time and you were left shivering in the cold.
The seventh year Gryffindors were going to be sharing the dungeons with the sixth year Slytherins much to everyone’s displeasure, you didn’t mind though. The faculty liked to put the two years together as they were reaching the end of their Hogwarts careers.
“Merlin, its freezing,” you complained to Remus as you pulled your cloak around you more securely.
Before Sirius could reply, Sirius spoke up – he’d been there barely a minute – “you know, I can warm you up, Potter. You just need to ask,” he smirked, a couple of girls in the back swooned, but you’d known him too long to get affected by him. It didn’t mean you couldn’t play with him though.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, a hand playing with the ends of his hair, “yeah, you gonna warm me up?”
Sirius looked surprised and he flushed as he wrapped an arm around your waist, “y-y’know, if you want.”
You smirked and leaned in close to whisper in his ear, “if you ever touch me like that, I’ll shove that wand so far up your- “you got cut off as Slughorn chose that precise moment to come along and let everyone into the dungeons.
Sirius gave you an exaggerated pout as he gestured with his outstretched hand. You sighed as you put your hand in his, laughing when he laced your fingers together and you followed him into the dungeons. Even as you got to your seats, Sirius didn’t let go of your hand, holding it beneath the table.
The lesson started ordinarily enough as Slughorn introduced the potions and poisons that you would be working with that year, though that was mainly for the sixth years benefit. You and your friends were distracted as you had heard this lecture the year before. However, your interest was piqued when Slughorn asked a question he hadn’t asked the year before.
“Who would like to come up to the Amoretti and tell the class what they smell?” Amoretti was a love potion that smelt different for everyone. They could smell whatever attracted them, “Mr Black, how about you?”
At Slug horn’s words, Sirius’ chest puffed out and he winked at you as he went to get up. He visibly deflated when he realised that Slughorn was talking to his brother and he sat back down. Obediently, Regales went to the front and stood in front of the potion and inhaled deeply, almost as if he was drinking it in.
“Um, I smell Butter beer, warm grass and,” he hesitated before sighing, “the ocean,” he didn’t wait for Slughorn to comment, instead he made his way to his seat, keeping his eyes forward and not looking at any of his classmates.
“Thank you, Regales,” Slughorn cleared his throat, “would anyone else like a turn?” Sirius didn’t speak up, he folded his arms with a pout on his face.
“I will, sir,” James volunteered himself quickly and walked up to the front of the class. Like Regales, he took a whiff of the potion, “okay, well I smell rose perfume, sugar quills and peaches,” he grinned at Lily who almost went the same colour as her hair. James looked strangely relieved as he sauntered back to his seat, kissing Lily’s cheek on the way.
Sirius leaned across to you, “want to know what I smell?”
“Hmm,” you turned to him, pretending to think about it, “how about yourself?”
“Very funny,” he said dryly.
As you were making your potion, Lily leaned over, “cheerleading try outs start when class is over today, you’re already on the team if you want. But, will you be there?”
You laughed as you stirred your mixture, “won’t you be accused of favouritism?”
Lily scoffed, “no, I think you underestimate how much people like you. And besides, they all know that I couldn’t have come up with all those routines without you.”
“I’ll come to try outs and the first practice session before I make my mind up, if that’s okay?”
“Will you wear the outfit though?”
“Yes, I’ll wear the outfit,” you laughed.
Suddenly, there was a panicked groan and you looked up at Peter who was on the verge of tears. You couldn’t stand to see your friend so upset so you went over to help.
“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” his potion was a luminous yellow colour.
“I added too much powdered snake fang, I’m so clumsy.”
“It’s easily done, Pete,” you assured him.
“I’m so bad at potions,” he buried his face in his hands.
“Being good at potions isn’t the be all and end all. You’re way better at Transfiguration than I am. It took me forever to turn that hedgehog into a pin cushion but you did it on the first go,” you smiled and Peter looked secretly pleased with himself.
“The perfect way to remedy too much powdered snake fang is adding more syrup of Hellebore,” you added a few more drops until his potion turned a few shades lighter than it was supposed to be. But, it was better than being luminous yellow.
“Thanks, Y/N.”
“You’re welcome,” you smiled, ruffling his hair before going back to your seat.
“You’re really kind, y’know that right?” Sirius grinned at you.
You shrugged, “he’s my friend, it’s no big deal.”
That afternoon at cheerleading try-outs you sat in the first row of the stands, too shy to include yourself just yet. You must have looked lost in thought because you heard an unfamiliar voice behind you.
“Hey, I thought this was my place to sit and contemplate life,” there was laughter in the voice.
You turned to face a cute boy with honey coloured hair and dimples in his cheeks, “I mean, I can go if you want me to?” you laughed.
“Nah,” he grinned as he sat down, “I don’t mind sharing.”
“How kind of you,” you teased.
“I’m Drew,” he offered you his hand.
“Y/N,” you smiled as you shook his hand.
“So cheerleading try outs?” he nodded at your outfit.
“Nothing escapes you, does it Drew?” you giggled and he smirked in response, “what about you though? Did you come here to watch the cheerleading try outs?” it would be just your luck to strike up a conversation with a guy who was a perve.
“No, I’m waiting for the Hufflepuff try outs to start,” he gestured across to the other side of the pitch where the Quidditch captain was setting up.
You felt a flush blossom on your cheeks, you just wanted to crawl into a hole and die, “oh, that was tactless. I’m sorry.”
He laughed, a deep rich warm sound as he ran a hand through his curls, “it’s okay. How come you’re watching from the side-lines anyway?”
“I’m kinda shy.”
“You seem to be doing just fine with me,” he nudged his shoulder against yours.
“Well, I’ve never seen you speak to my brother, so you’ve got nothing to compare me to,” you laughed, “my best friend wanted me to participate more in school activities this year because I never really have.”
Drew nodded understandingly, “yeah same, I love Quidditch but I’ve never played it competitively.”
“What position are you going for?” you asked.
“Seeker.”
“Wow!” you laughed, “never played Quidditch competitively but you’re jumping in the deep end.”
He laughed, “hey, I’ll play Quidditch if you become a cheerleader.”
Before you could reply, Sirius came to speak to you in the stands, “are you coming to dinner? Lily is gonna come when she’s finished,” his voice was tight as he looked between you and Drew.
You shook your head, “I’ll come up later.”
“Right,” he mumbled, “I’ll take a plate to the common room for you.”
When it was Drew’s turn to try out for the team, your stomach rumbled. Loudly. Drew looked at you with a laugh.
“Go and get some food.”
“Are you sure?”
He nodded, “to be honest, I’d rather you not watch me fall from my broom.”
You laughed, “let me know how it goes.”
When you got back to the common room, Remus looked up at you as he handed you a plate of food, “where were you?”
You didn’t have to answer though as Sirius did it for you, “she was flirting with some damn Hufflepuff.”

Shh! I’m doing SCIENCE-
I wanna see if there’s any correlation between your Hogwarts house and who you headcanoned as your Godly Parent.
Reblog with what you diagnosed yourself as and we’ll see if there’s any overlap. If you want, add your star sign for good measure. I’ll go first:
Huffleclaw (Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw) + Legacy of Apollo (Although all the quizzes say I’m a child of Athena) + Ares Sun, Ares Moon, Cancer Rising

James Potter not being able to hide his bewilderment when he sees that baby Harry has inherited his mother’s green eyes… James Potter skipping around the house, his and Sirius’s voices draining each other as they stand together looking down at the new member of the Potter family sleeping tightly, their eyes shining and mouths running….
James Potter, who never lived long enough to learn that Harry also inherited his mother’s sarcasm, her humour…
Harry James Potter, who inherited Lily’s gaze, that look in his eyes… like he was older than his age… Harry Potter, who inherited Lily’s desperate need to prove herself, Lily’s posture, the way Lily wrote her g’s… Harry, who inherited not only traits from his mother, but also traits from his father.
Harry with his father’s messy hair, Harry who bounces his leg when he’s stressed and ruffles his hair when he’s nervous, unlike his father who ruffled it to impress girls. Harry with a glimpse of his father’s mischievousness in his Lily eyes. Harry who talks in his sleep like his father, Harry with dimples like his father, Harry with poor eyesight like his father.
It’s all a mess of Lily (can’t function properly under stress), James (showers in cold water)… and Harry himself (short temper). Because if it’s something so many people seem to forget about him, which always pisses him off, is that Harry is his own person too.
He loves Treacle Tart, he has his own awkward little laugh, he can’t control his face, he bites his nails when studying, he loves strong smells, and that’s all him. Just… him.
And what Sirius never got to tell him, is that: if people would try to look past the way his parents are still with him in his eyes, behind his smile and in his heart… they would see a wonderful young boy. So much more than what his parents ever made him. Harry raised himself. Harry grew up to be his own.
But Sirius never got to tell him that, just like he never got to tell him that he had Remus’s awkward flush, Sirius’s shit-eating grin, Dorcas’s frustrated resting face, Regulus’s unbothered expression when he was locked into his own little shell… traits that were Mary’s, Marlene’s, James’s, Lily’s, and most importantly Harry’s own.
Sirius never even learnt if these were things Harry would have liked to hear.

Also, I added a last name for the reader, but not the name, since it would be an OC in that case. I needed a pureblood last name. It was a rainy morning. Every drop of rain felt like salty tears that would roll down one’s face until it would fall to the ground; every roar of thunder sounded like screams of a person who was in pain; every crack of lightning looked like horrible scars that eventually fade away, but always stay in your head.
Sun was nowhere in sight. Instead of warm, comforting and welcoming giant lit ball, clouds covered the sky, clouds that once were fluffy and white like snow, now cold, grey, empty, putting everyone in a grumpy mood. It was as if nature knew about the nearing dark times.
As much as you would love to stay in bed, stare at the ceiling and think about nothing, you had class to attend, and skipping classes wasn’t very smart choice. You rolled out of bed and went to the bathroom. Your roommates were still asleep, so you tiptoed around, trying to keep as quiet as possible.
Walking into the bathroom, mirror was the first thing you saw, hanging above the sink. You looked at your reflection and sighed deeply. Memories of last night flooded your mind and suddenly you felt nauseous. You leaned on the sink for support, your hands gripping either side of it and your head hanging lowly. You wanted to forget everything, but you couldn’t. You couldn’t get them out of your head, as if someone put it on replay. You shut your eyes and just stood there for a few seconds. A single tear escaped your eye and rolled down your cheek. You didn’t bother wiping it away though. You watched in the mirror as it neared your chin and then fell on the floor. You sniffled quietly and turned on the cold water, splashing some on your face in order to clear your mind.
When you were finished there, you stepped out of the bathroom door and back inside your sleeping area. To your luck, your roommates were still asleep. You quickly changed into your robes and silently opened the door, praying it wouldn’t make a cracking noise. You sneaked down the stairs and headed out of Gryffindor common room.
It was pretty early in the morning, Great Hall was mostly empty, only very few students were sitting here and there.
Sighing, you walked towards your house table and sat down quietly. The breakfast was laying in front of you, its delicious smell making it impossible for you to not look at it, but you didn’t have an appetite. Your appetite depended on your mood and right now you were in a terrible mood. Not that it was unexpected, anyway. After all, what sane person would be in a good mood if what happened to you yesterday, happened to them?! You were scared. What if he would tell someone, let alone everyone?! No live being on Earth was supposed to know about your horrible secret.
Draco was not the best person. Not for you, at least. The guy decided to be your sworn enemy on the day you met and has successfully been one since then. He was always cold towards you, embarrassing you mercilessly in front of the whole school. He would always bring you down or make fun of you, insult you and even cast some unpleasant spells on you. He was always so loud and annoying, making his presence known every time he would enter the room. That’s why you were confused when you noticed major changes in the Slytherin Prince.
What confused you even more was that yesterday, when he was angry, you saw something else in his eyes, something you had never seen before. Was it fear? Did he fear that you would actually die? Not that he would lose you or anything. He couldn’t lose what he never had; or was it- no, it couldn’t be. He is Draco Lucius Malfoy, for Merlin’s sake! He hates you, silly! You scolded yourself and shook yourself out of your stupid thoughts. But you were still curious. You wanted to know how he felt. What did he think of you, of your parents. What was he doing now?
As if on cue, the said platinum blond haired boy appeared in the hallway. Entering the Great Hall, he immediately looked at you, but you were already looking at your plate of food, picking on your now-cold egg with the silver fork, pretending to be eating. He sighed quietly, the sound coming out almost inaudible. Even when he was already sitting at the Slytherin table, you could feel his intense stare burning your face. And the fact that your front was facing him didn’t help at all, quite the opposite actually; you couldn’t look up, because if you did, you wouldn’t be able to avoid making eye contact with him, and that was the last thing you wanted.
Draco, on the other hand, wanted you to look up, he wanted you to look at him. Why, he didn’t know either. Maybe he just wanted to see the look in your eyes, he wanted to know how you would look at him. Would it be disgust? Or hate? Maybe annoyance. Perhaps fatigue. But what if it was exhaustion, loneliness? What if you just needed help? He scoffed at himself; why would you ask help from him? Why would you even consider that he would help you?
He was so deep in thoughts, he didn’t even notice when did Zabini and Goyle walk in, followed by the Golden trio shortly after. All of them were equally confused. Scene was confusing, indeed; the Slytherin Prince was staring at his rival Gryffindor, his eyes begging for you to look up, but you were avoiding him on purpose. The two Slytherins didn’t understand why was he staring at you, but the trio didn’t understand why was he staring at you.
When he realized that he was caught, he quickly looked away from you and down his breakfast. Taking fork in his hand, he cleared his throat and started eating. Meanwhile, Harry, Ron and Hermione approached you. Hermione sat right next to you, Harry and Ron directly across from the two of you. Hermione smiled brightly at you, trying not to show how curious she was about you and Draco. “Good morning, Y/n! How are you?”
You also smiled at her, although with force, you hoped they wouldn’t notice, "I'm fine. What time is it?" You sneakily changed the subject, "I don’t want to be late for class."
Harry understood your intent but said nothing, “Don't worry, you won't be late. We have Potions too." Hermione tried to sneak in, “Well, Malfoy was looking at you a bit strangely. Did something happen?” Yes, something happened, very bad thing happened, you thought to yourself, but then you faked a scoff, “Not that I know of. I mean, he’s Malfoy.” His last name came out of your mouth sharply, as if it were a venomous thing, not someone’s last name.
Hermione nodded her head, seemingly buying it. One thing about you; you were an excellent actress. Standing up, you looked down at the three Gryffindors. As much as you didn’t want to be with anyone else right now, you couldn’t shrug them off now when you had the same class, “Well, what are we waiting for then? Let’s go to Potions.” They all nodded their heads and followed you.
On the way to the dungeons you were practically following behind the three like a lost puppy, but you didn’t seem to care, you didn’t even pay attention to their dialogues, you didn’t know what they were saying, maybe they were talking to you, maybe they weren’t, who knows.
You finally got to the classroom and sat down at one desk in the side of your house, Hermione sat next to you, as expected, with Harry and Ron sitting behind you. Snape was nowhere in sight. Of course, you scoffed to yourself, the bastard had to barge in for special effect and then start being a total bitch, not that he ever stopped anyway. And now he would start throwing random ass insults at every Gryffindor, which were not necessary at all. But, of course, he had to attack you first, because you were a filthy blood traitor. You rolled your eyes at the thought and looked down at your unopened book.
“Psst, Potter, Potter!” Malfoy. Of-fucking-course! Snape was not there, so he just had to seize the moment, “Saw you talking to that lunatic last night, like her or something?” Parkinson snorted at that, Zabini smirked and Goyle started laughing. Harry glared at him, rolled his eyes and mumbled a “Shut up Malfoy”.
Ron furrowed his brows and leaned towards him “Who did he mean by that?” Harry looked at his best friend and shook his head “Dumbledore sent me to Professor Trelawney yesterday evening, to tell her something”. Ron nodded his head and just as he was about to say something, the doors of Snape’s chambers bursted open and in walked the said man himself. You shook your head at his dramatic antics; barging in with his cloak floating, swinging his greasy hair back. You rolled your eyes, at this point, god knows how many times you have rolled your eyes that day.
“Students, we have a very important lesson today,” he started, with his monotonous voice, looked around the class, making the pause even more dramatic, and then “Dueling.”
There were groans from Gryffindors and excited noises from Slytherins. Pansy and Goyle had that sickening smiles across their faces, the kind of smile that makes you want to throw up.
Snape wasted no time and started naming people “Mister Weasley and Mister Zabini”.
Ron grunted silently, but stood up nonetheless. The two students climbed on the dueling podium, positioned and waited for professor to give them a sign to start. As soon as they got a nod of approval from Snape, Zabini shot a disarming spell towards Ron, which he blocked with 'Protego'. Then Ron threw a 'Locomotor Mortis' which glued Zabini’s legs together, but before he could fall, he shouted 'Rictusempra' which caused Ron to laugh uncontrollably.
“Enough.” Snape ended their duel and looked around the class. Ron and Zabini nodded at each other, by force of course, and sat back down at their desks.
“Miss Parkinson.” Snape announced next, “who wants to compete with Miss Parkinson?” But it was not a question for students to answer, “Miss Granger.”
Hermione stood up, a little nervous, and walked up to the girl. Snape nodded and they started dueling. Hermione shot 'Tarantalegra' towards Pansy, which made her start dancing. Pansy, shouted 'Expelliarmus' which successfully disarmed Hermione.
Suddenly, Snape raised his hand, stopping both of them in their tracks.
“Sit down.” He said with his cold voice. The two girls sat down and looked at Snape, "What you are doing is the bare minimum. You're not doing enough. I need the best you can do.” Snape made a little pause before speaking up again, "Now, do any of you want to come forward?”
Goyle’s hand immediately shot up. Snape glanced at him, "Okay,” he hummed to himself before announcing, "Mister Goyle."
Goyle stood up and walked in the middle of the classroom, climbing up the podium and facing the class.
"Who wants to compete with Mister Goyle?”
Silence.
Snape glanced at the Gryffindors sitting in front of him, and scoffed “Nobody?” he asked, rather amused than disappointed.
“Miss.. Armand.” You looked at him with a disgust stretched across your face. Pairing was very unfair.
Goyle was one of the very few dangerous, merciless students. He was very good at Dark Arts and dueling. He was large and muscular compared to you. It was even funny, seeing you and him fight against each other, since he was practically towering over you.
Snape gave the two of you a sign to start, but you didn't start immediately like others did. You observed each other for a few seconds.
Goyle shot non-verbal disarming spell towards you, but you blocked his spell with non-verbal shielding charm almost immediately. Goyle was always fighting sneaky fight, he would not say anything out loud. He would do anything and everything to appear more 'impressive'.
He shot 'Stupefy' towards you, but you easily blocked it with 'Ennervate'. You never attacked first. For the first few moments of dueling, you would only defend yourself and make it seem like you were not strong enough, and when your opponent would run out of spells or get even tiny bit tired, you would attack with your full force.
Goyle sent another 'Stupefy' towards you, but you did a backflip and successfully avoided the spell. You, then shot a non-verbal curse which momentarily blinded Goyle.
It was a curse that very few people knew of, almost a secret, that you found in one of the dark books your parents’ kept in their library. A curse that temporarily blinds the opponent and causes a white, blinding light to fill the victim's vision, rendering them sightless for a short period of time, causing confusion and disorientation in its targets.
You used his distraction for your advantage and moved behind him. When he was able to see again, you waited for him to turn around, and when he did, you shot a 'Flipendo' that knocked him backwards.
One more thing about you, you would never attack from behind.
When he gained his strength and stood back up, he shot a non-verbal 'Expelliarmus' which somehow disarmed you. The whole class gasped and Goyle smirked in victory, but little did he know that you let him disarm yourself on purpose. Gregory aimed his wand at you, but before he could even think of a spell, you sent a non-verbal, wandless 'Funnuculus' which made his skin boil. He dropped his wand in agony and you immediately summoned it by a simple 'Accio', holding it to his throat.
"Do you surrender?” You asked, digging his wand in his throat deeper.
Goyle gulped before squealing out a yes. You removed his wand from his throat and returned it to him.
The whole class was shocked. Even Snape. You looked at him, nodded to Goyle and went back to your seat.
“The lesson is over.” Snape announced suddenly. He looked as if lightning just struck him.
As soon as you heard his words, you stood up and marched to the exit.
Draco, on the other hand, was frozen, he couldn’t move. Never in the hundred years would he have imagined you were this strong. For some unknown reason, he wanted to run after you and ask if you were okay.
He didn’t know what was happening to him, but suddenly he cared for you. In reality, he actually liked you since the very beginning, but he didn’t know it himself. Not yet at least.

Chapter Two
The night before going back to Hogwarts was always a mad rush because you had to leave so early in the morning. You packed your potions book in your suitcase as you rooted through your clothes for what felt like the hundredth time. You were still missing a pair of socks. You sighed and went downstairs to see if your mum had forgotten to bring them up.
As you were rummaging through the basket of clean clothes, James lumbered into the kitchen, you couldn’t see how he was so graceful on a broom, yet managed to trip over his own feet.
“What did you do to Sirius?”
You barely glanced up at him but you frowned, “what? I did nothing to Sirius. Why, did he say something?”
James narrowed his eyes at you but shook his head, “nothing, never mind.”
You stood up properly to look at your brother, he was holding socks, they were turned inside out so you could see the pink thread on the inside.
“Hey! Those are mine,” you reached out to grab them. You couldn’t get them out of his grip as he pulled them closer to his chest, your nails almost ripping the fabric.
“They are not yours!”
“Oh, do you sew pink thread in the inside of your socks do you?” you scoffed, trying to pull them back,
“Yes!” he grumbled.
“Fine,” you let go of the socks causing James to stumble back into the counter, making you burst out into laughter.
He scowled at you, his cheeks going red as he threw the socks at you, “you’re such a bitch!” he exclaimed before storming up the stairs.
“Prat!” you called after him.
“Hey, language,” your dad said as he came in from the garden, “what did you do to Sirius?”
“Nothing, dad,” you huffed before going back upstairs to finish packing.
Your mood towards James hadn’t brightened by the next morning, you barely wanted to sit next to him in the car so you put your bag in the middle seat as the both of you turned away to pout out of your respective windows. You both said a quick goodbye to your parents – as she did every year, your mum had tears in her eyes – before boarding the train.
You saw Regulus going into his apartment when you got onto the train. He grinned when he spotted you and pulled you into a hug before moving you next to him so people could still get past.
“Hey, angel.”
“Hey Reggie,” you smiled as you tucked a strand of his hair behind his ear.
“How was your summer?”
“It was good, it started off a little weird because of the whole James and Lily thing.”
Regulus let out a huff of a laugh and raised his eyebrows, “yeah, I’ll bet.
“How was yours?”
“It was,” Regulus sighed and you could see he was struggling to find the words, “it was a summer,” he laughed dismissvely.
You smiled sadly but before you could say anything his friends called out from inside the compartment, “c’mon, stop flirting!”
Regulus went pink, “I wasn’t flirting with you!”
“How do you know they weren’t talking to me?”
At your words, Regulus went scarlet and he began babbling and stuttering over his words. It was funny to watch, considering he was normally so articulate, “I’m kidding,” you giggled, kissing his cheek, “I just like seeing you flustered. I’ll see you later, okay?”
He nodded as he walked into his compartment, his cheeks still flaming. You walked down the train and found your friends towards the back. Sirius was sitting with his arm around a gorgeous blonde. When you pushed the door open, everyone looked up at you. Sirius smirked as he glanced up at you.
“Y/N, this is Melanie, Melanie this is Y/N.”
“Hi Y/N,” she said in a sugary sweet voice.
You nodded at her and looked around at the others who looked pretty awkward, “I’ll see you later,” Sirius said.
The girl took that as her cue to go and as she stood up, Sirius patted her bum, watching as she walked away, “now, that girl would look fucking hot in a cheerleading outfit.”
You rolled your eyes as you walked over to sit on the floor, Remus making space for you as you leaned against his legs, “that your flavour of the month?”
James snickered, “flavour of the week is more like it.”
Sirius thought for a second before he nodded and jabbed his thumb in James’ direction “yeah, that sounds about right.”
You rolled your eyes as Remus handed you a segment of chocolate, “ugh, you are such a pig!”
“What kept you?” Peter asked as he looked up from his chocolate frog card collection, seemingly oblivious to the conversation that just happened. He gasped happily as you gave him the chocolate frog that you’d put in your jacket before leaving home that morning.
“Was just saying hi to Reg.”
“Oh yeah? What did my darling brother have to say?”
“That’s really none of your business. If you want to know how he is, why don’t you talk to him yourself?” you said popping the piece of chocolate into your mouth.
“Regulus is such a sweetie,” Lily remarked as she rested her head against James’ chest.
“He is! He’s definitely my favourite,” you smirked at Sirius.
The silence was deafening as Sirius glared at you. The silence was broken by Peter – who again, hadn’t been paying a bit of attention to the conversation – as he ripped the shiny paper off his chocolate frog.
“Yes! I haven’t got this card yet, thanks Y/N.”
You’d always loved the journey to Hogwarts, you loved the endless mountains and lakes as they rolled past the train window. You especially loved hearing Sirius and James panic as they rushed to start and finish their homework.
“Why do you always have so much chocolate?” you laughed as you bit into a chocolate caramel, “not that I’m complaining or anything.”
Remus’ fingers paused in your hair and you thought he wasn’t going to answer you, “chocolate is poisonous to dogs,” he said as if that solved everything.
“So what? You’re trying to kill Sirius or something?” you asked, completely missing the point.
“No,” you could hear the laughter in his voice before he sighed, “when I was little, I used to think that if I ate a lot of chocolate it would kill the wolf inside me, or at least make the transformations easier and I just haven’t been able to kick the habit.”
Your heart sank, “I researched all summer to try and figure out a way to make things a little bit better for you but I couldn’t find anything.”
Remus pulled his fingers through the tangles in your hair, “it’s just something that I have to live with, I appreciate the help love,” he kissed the top of your head before wrapping an arm around you.
“Love you, Rem.”
“Love you too precious.”
The Great Hall was warm and welcoming as always and you watched the new first years get sorted with a bittersweet pang in your chest. It seemed like only yesterday you were getting sorted and now suddenly, you were in your last year. You couldn’t imagine your life without Hogwarts. As the food appeared on the golden platters you couldn’t believe that this was going to be the last sorting feast you would have.
Sirius must have seen the longing look on your face because he leaned close to you, “what are your plans after school?”
You shrugged as you took a sip of pumpkin juice, “I think I might like to teach.”
“What, here?”
You nodded, “yeah, maybe when Slughorn retires,” you laughed, “what about you?”
He looked like he hadn’t expected you to ask the question back to him because he mumbled as he dragged a hand through his long hair, “not really got a plan.”
“Not everyone does, but you’ll figure it out.”
Sirius smiled wanly at you as he glanced over at James before looking back at you, “has James been acting weird to you?”
“No weirder than usual, why?”
“No, nothing. Just a feeling,” he mumbled, narrowing his eyes at his best friend.

potter-verse headcanons that I choose to view as canon bc fuck jkr <3
*I redid these bc james' lineage was pointed out to me in a previous comment and I don't wanna disregard it so I tweaked a few things to keep it true to the lore while also spiting the terf
this will be very long btw
starting with the marauders era (sorry this is basically an essay now)
adding onto that, I just would love to see his inner conflicts and hopes and ambitions and dialogue more flushed out, because I really don't think him being rejected by an old flame is at all cause enough for him to suddenly just hate children. even his rivalry and bullying with/from james doesn't feel like the push that comes to shove idk
severus snape is not an abusive man. in my opinion, the way that he's written makes him seem like a very cause to effect character without much complexity to him other than that he was in love with lily evans. in my mind, he's lily's closest friend and defender for most of their growing up together at hogwarts, especially after he begins unlearning blood purist ideologies. he tries to protect her from james potter, who's antagonistic of blood purists by nature, and also a massive troublemaker. thinking it will get lily hurt is what ultimately fuels his hatred of james (that and the fact that james is just kind of a dick to him the whole time they're at school together)
an earlier commenter pointed out to me that james' grandfather invented fleamont's hair potion, so the inheritance of that success would make james' family quite well off. and while he grows up with a very good home life and very loving parents, I imagine james also feels quite stifled sometimes, being that he's an only child with a lot of room in his house and a lot of legacy to carry. it's not like he has a complex about it, but he's sort of a steve harrington-esque kind of character. he's not a complete asshat, but he does experience a lot of growing pains and contentions to his worldview on multiple levels when he first becomes acquainted with lily and severus, and even when he first meets the other marauders. it adds a lot more interest than just making him the charming class clown, and james being desi adds another layer of complexity to him too. (I'm quite curious about how desi metaphysics are practiced, and how that would be a shift for him going from eleven years of his own household magic to hogwarts magic)
adding onto that, it's why he and sirius become such fast friends - sirius feels estranged from his own family, and james' only family are his parents and grandparents. they're closer than sirius and his own brother are. this does certainly make things strange and angsty when regulus takes an admiration to james that sirius notices, when sirius himself is constantly being compared to his more "ideal wizard archetype" younger brother his entire life
in fact, regulus' admiration of james starts as more of a scientific sort of reverence - he wants to understand how a pure blood can be so defiant of the ideas that suggest he's more worthy of practicing wizardry, let alone a pure blood who has come from so much. he learns quite a lot about james through sirius, and when he actually meets him for the first time, he's nothing like the troublemaker prince charming that everyone expects him to be. it's the first time reg experiences real endearment to someone who isn't in his own family, and even that kind of love is conditional at best (shout-out to walburga and orion black for their a-plus parenting)
it makes it that much more painful when he sees that james, while kinder and more considerate than he seemed at first, only thinks of him as sirius'-younger-brother-who-isn't-actually-that-terrible-perhaps; when he sees that james only has room in his heart for lily evans, who by black family standards isn't worthy to have any knowledge of the magical world, let alone belong in it. and he's trying to be better and to understand, but even the kindest blood purists are still blood purists, and it will take him years after this heartbreak to rectify that mindset - even as he's defying voldemort himself
lily grows up in scotland, and while her parents love her and petunia very much, they're constantly fighting. she and tuney often spend time together, and when lily's magical talents start to emerge, she at first asks her big sister, her protector, her closest friend, to keep this secret from their parents. so imagine the heartbreak when lily's owl comes in the mail, and instead of the magical announcement being a complication for their parents, the evans' are overjoyed. imagine the betrayal that petunia feels when, after years of borderline neglect to the both of them, lily leans into the praise and attention she's now receiving. and she tries to make it up to tuney - she even grows a flower in her own hand hoping to make peace with her only real role model in life, only to have it shut down by being called a freak. things only get worse as tuney is left at home with quarreling parents while lily gets the privilege of being away from all of it. the number of letters she sends to dumbledore begging to learn magic, then simply begging to see her little sister more than just during christmas, should be enough to convince the old man to have some leniency, but dumbledore doesn't
now let's talk about peter pettigrew. we all blame him for the downfall of james and lily that kicks off the tragedy of harry's childhood, which we should. but the why of it feels important to me, so personally, this is how I see his psyche playing a role: what if he grows up in a religious household? now I know how that sounds, but hear me out. peter grows up in a religious family because his parents carry some sort of shame surrounding their magical lineage. maybe it's because their squibs, maybe it's because of other trauma from being discovered by muggles, etc. regardless, he grows up discouraged from using his magic, but instead of suppressing it and developing an obscurus, he learns how to hide it. he practices his abilities in secret, until he's a very good liar with the worst case of people pleasing. so when his owl comes with his hogwarts letter, his parents are less than happy about it. he's sent to live with his aunt when he's not at school. in the meantime, he hides as much as he can about his family from the marauders. remus has his lycanthropy to worry about, and sirius already has an even rockier home life to begin with. so it's no wonder that peter latches onto james - ironically, james becomes a secret keeper of sorts for him. but peter is never close to him the way sirius is, or even remus. he's forgotten by his friends, disregarded by his parents, and written off as soft and submissive by his other peers and even the teachers. it makes him all the more suggestible when he's sought out by voldemort, who promises him a place of belonging, which is all that he's ever wanted since he was a child. he's hidden things from the people closest to him once before, so he can do it again, right?
until of course, voldemort actually physically manipulates him with an imperius curse. and all it takes is one curse for the dark lord to convince peter that his friends can never take him back, not when he's killed and maimed and cursed and destroyed lives as much as he has. "not when you're my most trusted servant, wormtail." in short, peter pettigrew is and always will be remembered as a coward. but before he was a coward, he was in pain. and voldemort used that pain to turn him against his only friends before his only friends could turn on him
speaking of other death eaters, let's talk about regulus again for a moment. in an audience-sparing plot, regulus lives. in an angst driven plot, regulus drowns. so for the sake of compromising realism for emotional lenience, let's say nobody actually knows what happens to him. there's all kinds of rumors about the missing black brother, but the truth is that regulus doesn't drown. he's badly hurt in his attempt to destroy the locket, because not only is that thing messing with him psychologically, it's also a pain in the ass to try and get rid of. brutally injured and looking for a place to hide, he enchants a supply cabinet in a muggle cafe to expand into his own flat, which looks to non-magic users like any old closet, even if they try to open it. kreacher is left the locket along with regulus' note, because he doesn't want to be found (great opportunity for him to make a sneaky little appearance in the first half of the deathly hallows though, when the golden trio are debriefing in a muggle cafe...)
remus grows up in a really good home, but like james, he feels a sort of isolation. not because of his class status but because of his condition. as his body begins to mature in his teenage years, his lycanthropy also "matures," taking a bigger and bigger toll on his body until by the time his third year starts at hogwarts (between growth spurts and growing pains and the intensity of his transitions), he can't walk without using a cane. he's pretty sickly as a child anyway to begin with, so more often than not, he spends a lot of time in his bed in the gryffindor common room. this means when a lot of the pranking and troublemaking is happening, he's either in the background unable to do much more than try and dissuade his friends, or he isn't there at all. it isn't until a little way into his fourth year that he begins actively participating in marauders shenanigans, including helping with the construction of the map. I imagine he and sirius both have feelings for one another during this time, but these feelings cannot or do not go acknowledged until the later years (like, year six or seven)
when it comes time to meet sirius' family, sirius has already been disowned by his birth parents and is extremely distant from his brother and cousins. all of course, except for his cousin andromeda, who reaches out to him after the news of his erasure from the family tree makes it to her. this is actually how remus meets tonks in my mind - because during the whole "meet the parents" thing, he meets ted, his wife, and their daughter nymphadora
that's all I've got for now from the marauders era but the golden trio era is a whole different ballgame (and probably way longer sorry in advance)
let's start with harry. petunia is not near as strict with him as vernon is, but they're both abusive to him in ways that are physical and psychological. dudley, of course, is given everything by his parents to the point of spoiling, while harry is forced to feed off of the leftovers. and while he definitely inherits his father's "fuck around and find out" personality, he's a lot less likely to fuck around with the dursleys. in fact, he's much more quiet until he gets to hogwarts and blossoms. I also think his scar is much more noticeable and does much more alteration to his face. because it's the aftermath of the killing curse, it makes him much more likely to die just from a physical standpoint than from simply a plot device standpoint. voldemort is obsessed with killing him, and incidentally, he's a very easy person to kill
however, this doesn't make harry a weak wizard by any means. his magic is incredibly powerful and he's incredibly cunning with it. it's why the hat finds it equally appropriate to sort him into slytherin, other than the obvious connection that he and voldemort share. but this does mean that other people's perceptions of him are that he is weaker. draco thinks he can easily manipulate him. ron underestimates his understanding of the wizarding world and how to defend himself. hermione even has her moments, though hers are more a concern for his well-being as a target of all sorts of evil wizardry. even still, it's a shock and a half to go from being consistently neglected and abused to being coddled and handled with kid gloves all the time. it's no wonder his "fuck around and find out" attitude we see in the books and films also comes to life due to the way he's being mistreated - whether that's with good or ill intent
ron is not only his first friend, but also the first person harry is formally introduced to. he's harry's gateway to what the wizarding world looks like outside of school. of course, molly weasley immediately decides this makes harry her son as well as ron, and it's nice for ron to have a brother his own age. but as the youngest son in a family of seven kids, with one of the honorary offspring being famous in the wizarding world, it's easy for him to get swept up in the idea that he's the afterthought of his friends and family. as a result, he tries emulating harry's attitude towards the world, but whereas harry's is built up by his upbringing and those around him, ron's is built up out of spite. it creates resentment when they're horcrux hunting together, because ron not only hates that harry is refusing to be taken care of - he also hates that nobody's taking care of him
it's why I think he and luna lovegood make an excellent pair. luna is an uncommonly kind person by nature, and we already know in the books that she takes a shine to ron. I wish we'd seen more of them in canon, so it's my personal philosophy that they should have been together instead of ron and hermione. luna really softens the resentment in ron, because she takes so much in stride that it sort of rubs off on him. and ron brings out something very protective and fiery in her. if she weren't a ravenclaw, she'd make an excellent gryffindor, though honestly she's such a multitudinous character already that she'd do swimmingly in almost any house, in my opinion
more on luna: she and hermione were actually quite close as first years, but grew apart because while luna was accepted for her neurodivergence, hermione was singled out. there's not much difference between the two of them other than the two factors that luna doesn't mask her traits, and is a pureblood. at the time that they're both eleven, I imagine eleven-year-old blood purist logic would muddy a friendship rather quickly, especially when you're trying to seek acceptance from your peers. this isn't to say that luna is a cruel person by any means - it's just that hermione has to work harder for her fitting-in-ness. naturally, being in different houses and different circles of peers along with all the other factors, they grow apart. four years after they've met, luna is simply "looney lovegood" to hermione
hermione's parents are very eager muggles to integrate hermione into the wizarding world. the two of them meet in college, when both take an interest in metaphysical studies and the history of witches and witchcraft. though it starts as a scientific fascination, hermione's father turns out to be a rather superstitious man in the first place. when their daughter receives her owl, both of them are overjoyed at the possibility of there being a world where their fascination with magic and the occult is real. the only reason they both go into dentistry (and together at the same office, no less) is because they're ridiculously in love with one another and want hermione to have a stable childhood
snape ends up being a very protective teacher over harry. the reason he hides it is because he knows dumbledore is on the hunt for power and control, however much the man tries to disguise it as working for the greater good. the headmaster simply believes harry is the perfect conduit to attain those things, and rather than view him as a threat, dumbledore views him as a tool. snape is desperate not to see harry become a pawn, the way he did, but he also sees so much of james in him that it's hard for him to reconcile any outward respect for him. this makes snape a very cold man for harry to cross (and he's already cold enough for several other reasons), but in my personal opinion, it does his character a disservice to make him outright abusive. he's dismissive and intense and extremely aloof, but never does he use it to punish harry himself. snape's only seen as a shifty, mean person by harry because of how similar he is to petunia and her dismissal of harry at home so by god do those trust issues jump out between these two. it's by no means a father + son dynamic, but it's certainly a begrudging guardian + clueless guardee dynamic, if that makes sense
in fact, when snape realizes draco is also dealing with abuse in the home, he makes it a goal of his to do what he can to make sure their time in his class is as easy as possible. of course, true to severus snape fashion, he does this in such a way that it seems like he's going to single them out when in reality, he's only breeding an environment where draco and harry start having a tentative, mutual respect for one another. this is at first very confusing for hermione and ron, as well as draco's circle of friends. but these two are nothing if not stubborn, which means cycle breaking is what they're destined for
this paves the way for draco and hermione to be in each other's circles. mutually indifferent to one another at best. detestable to one another at worst. very much enemies to lovers, until hermione bests draco in a dueling practice and draco gains some respect for her. he learns that she is a very well schooled person when it comes to traditional witch traditions and rituals; that she recognizes the holidays that christmas and halloween are bastardizations of; that she does in fact "respect her betters," because she respects her magic as the sacred gift that it is. at that point, does it become allies to lovers. and when the second wizarding war rolls around, he does everything he can within his power to play the roll of double agent. snape becomes his mentor in that regard in more ways than one (he has to kill dumbledore and he has to outsmart voldemort, homeboy is stressing)
hey speaking of pairings, the only original pairing that I tend to keep the same within the golden trio is ginny and harry. it is the sole good pairing that jkr brought to the table. I still have a few notes on it — I just wish there was more development with them. I wish there was more canonical tension than "brother's famous best friend," because while ginny is a wonderful character on her own, she doesn't seem the type to be besotted by someone because of their fame. in fact, an enemies to lovers hinny would almost make more sense to me. they're both incredibly stubborn, it's a wonder they don't butt heads more during canon events, with the fact in mind that ginny is quite soft spoken around him. she's very do-no-harm-take-no-shit, and I wish we saw more of that in their interactions. in my head, their pipeline is as follows: younger sister figure -> academic rival/enemy -> allies during the order era -> confidants -> lovers. if this makes sense. I know it's similar to the canon pipeline for them but please I need tension I need depth I need conflict
I also have got to talk about cho because first of all, what the fuck kind of name is "cho chang" for the only visibly asian character in a franchise? said it once and I'll say it again: fuck jkr. she didn't put thought or depth into this character even one bit other than making her ditsy and boy-obsessed and I hate that shit! with all my heart! in fact, all of the POC women in this series she writes specifically to be obsessed with harry, and that makes my blood absolutely evaporate because they could be so much more than one dimensional figures. I digress
as I see it, "cho chang" isn't her real name at all. it's chao-xing zhang, and the first name means morning star. she hails from a family where her father is chinese and her mother is irish. if I had to give her a middle name, it would be siobhan. she grows up with strong roots in both her irish and chinese heritage, and she's the pride of her family, since she's the only child her parents are able to have. when she arrives at hogwarts, she is quite shy and reserved. but she's brilliant, so of course she's in ravenclaw. but it's in an atypical sense that she is brilliant, not in the I-come-fom-an-asian-family-so-I'm-clever kind of way (I think giving her the gift of clairvoyance would add a really good layer to her arc). she tries to fight off visions of harry potter dying, but she cannot shake them, so instead she vows to fight with him, especially after voldemort kills the first person to show her love and affection for who she is, not for the "cho chang" that her peers think she is. it's only natural for her to take a shine to harry when he's the one who saw cedric diggory murdered
while we're on the topic of horseshit naming, parvati and padma aren't called parvati and padma in my personal mindscape of the potter-verse. they're instead named drisana and salena, meaning "daughter of the sun" and "moon" respectively. not only are they fraternal twins, they also have entirely separate personalities and magical gifts. they're as different as the sun and moon are different, but they also both reflect each other's gifts quite well, just like how the full moon is an expression of both itself and the light of the sun. of course they're both enamored by the boy who lived and his best mate, and of course they say yes to them when they need dates for the yule ball. but to say either of them are actually in love with or interested in either of the boys isn't true by a long shot - salena much prefers her own company and drisana has been eyeing the pretty ravenclaw, chao-xing, for as long as she can remember (I also think they would take harry under their wing and help him reconnect with his desi culture because I can't imagine being raised by the dursleys gave him too much opportunity for that tbh)
now onto more world-buildy types of things
in fact, I'd say the only stereotypical twins at hogwarts are fred and george, and even then they only play into it for the bit. they think it's wildly funny to confuse anyone who doesn't know them well enough to tell them apart, which is a very small number of people (I mean come on, even their own mother doesn't always manage to tell them apart). one of them is probably just a little bit fruity, and the other one is either none the wiser or not the least bit surprised. they pretend like they're carefree people, but they both feel the pull of the war on their morale, even before the war truly sets in motion with the death of dumbledore. they don't have any older sibling figures present as far as we read until bill becomes part of the plot, but I like to think he and charlie are the ones they go to when they're needing someone to talk to about the state of the world. even then, they have to be careful about it in their correspondences.
and while I like to think that molly and arthur are all very present in the lives of their children, I also believe that arthur's work in the ministry keeps him quite busy, and molly can't always be there for each individual child without totally burning herself out. long story short, the weasleys are there for one another as much as they can be, but mainly as a whole. and of course, every weasley brother would level london for ginny if the need arose for it, since she gets little sister treatment (as she should, we love her for it)
it is in my humble opinion that each house has some elemental magic attached to it. some of these are more obvious, for instance, gryffindor would likely have many ties to fire magic, whereas with hufflepuff's patron being the badger, they'd have many ties to earth magic. ravenclaw and slytherin were a little bit harder for me to parse out, but a raven for me would signify air/weather magic while a reptilian, cold blooded patron would be symbolic to water. and while of course, any magical student can have a proclivity for any element of the four, many gryffindors will have a higher aptitude for fire magic. it's why (in my opinion) seamus finnegan is so talented with pyrotechnics in the first place - it's no accident that gryffindor is where he was sorted with that level of fire magic
so then, liv, how does that explain dumbledore's weird water orb and voldemort's fire serpent featured in the order of the phoenix film? actually that's a quite easy answer - remember how I said not every gryffindor has fire magic tendencies? this is actually referenced with neville longbottom's talent for herbology. if anything, he's more inclined to work with earth magic. we don't see a lot of deviating from house elements at all in canon, but aside from the main main characters, jkr also doesn't divulge much on it to begin with. even then, neville still has the inner fire of a gryffindor. and even though voldemort's raw magic takes the form of a serpent on fire, we see his former self most comfortable with the basilisk, who lives in the dank underbelly of the hogwarts plumbing. water snakes, anybody? dumbledore's is a little trickier to explain, but I do think in his conquest to be more powerful than voldemort, he also ended up mastering all four elements. he does certainly favor fire though, considering his animal companion is a phoenix, and his raw magic is displayed with fire in the half blood prince film during the sea cave scene
beyond the elements and patrons of each house, there's also astrology, runes, divination, etc. basically magic that isn't necessarily assigned to an element, but the elements can be present in each practice. for instance, astrology is a very planetary practice, and it relies on the position of the earth itself in relation to the stars and other celestial bodies (or vice versa). the moon oversees the tides (water), the sun provides warmth (fire) as well as nurtures greenery and living things (earth). all three interacting in different manners affects the weather (air). runes can be written or carved anywhere, but are best written either with something fluid like water and inked, or etched into a solid surface such as wood or stone. divination, particularly scrying, is best done with a reflective surface, however tea reading involves some herbology when it comes to making the tea itself. I digress, the point is, different aptitudes mean some students will have a higher proclivity for one practice than another outside of their "inner element" or which element works best with them (also jkr why didn't you include something for the crystal girlies?? for the fellas who love the pretty rocks???)
onto the topic we all love (said sarcastically) the most: wizard racism. rowling really thought she could paint a complex narrative about blood purity and the differences thereof when her own writing is inherently racist? miss me with that horseshit, anyway here's my personal take on the whole blood purity smorgasbord:
the only difference between muggleborns and regular old muggles is that some have the aptitude and skill for harnessing magic, and some don't. I don't actually know the science behind it. maybe the stars aligned just right. maybe it's a distant genetic thing. regardless, muggles have a very whimsical view of magic itself. we have our holidays like christmas and halloween and easter, and our cutesy packagings of the aesthetic for each holiday. but the holidays that they originate from, such as yule and samhain, have been celebrated by pagans and witches long before this christ-ifying of them, and even longer before making them palatable to a consumer culture. meaning it is real culture that has been taken and warped and accepted by society as normal, when it doesn't credit the original practicers in the first place
and considering the salem witch trials and other witch hunts (some of which are still happening in places around the globe, mind you), it's no wonder that, taking the canon of harry potter into consideration, purebloods (in this case, those from pagan families who have kept the practices for hundreds of generations and have only married within magical bloodlines) are at least mistrusting of muggleborns. does it excuse the blatant mistreatment and alienation of muggleborn witches and wizards? absolutely not. does it at least explain the disparity? yes it does
it gives salazar slytherins perspective of only allowing purebloods into his house an entirely new layer as to why. if only he didn't go about hatching an ancient bloodthirsty beast to hunt down the muggleborn students!
it does also add a very archaic level to slytherin house culture, though - they're not only the most cunning house (and most misunderstood), they're also the most observant of traditional paganism. dumbledore is so dead set on the belief that slytherin breeds evil wizards and witches, however, that his favoritism to his patron house (which happens to have the opposite mascot and element, mind you) creates an environment where slytherins are either feared or outright disrespected by the other houses. here's a hot take: dark and light magic can exist within the same space and still not have any moral attachment to them. crazy, innit
which means that not only is dumbledore a more "accepting" headmaster of muggleborns - they too, are a means to an end in this vendetta he has against tom riddle; a vendetta he's had against a child since he realized this child (who mind you, was already isolated as an orphan and a wizard growing up surrounded by muggles) was the heir of slytherin. and while yes, this made him a threat to the safety of muggleborn students, dumbledore also ensured the creation of the thing that which he vowed to overthrow. his mission in life as a wizard with great power and responsibility was a self fulfilling prophecy
(enough said about albus dumbledore. I hate that man. no wonder jkr paints him as such a hero figure in the series though like damn)
more world building! I think it should be canon that a modified obliviate spell exists so that trans witches and wizards can erase the memory of a dead name from the minds of anyone who isn't them. use this headcanon how you must, it may be the biggest fuck you to the author I could come up with <3
phew! that was a mouthful, but on that note, those are all my thoughts/headcanons/other things that I've conjured so far. some of them may be based off of headcanons I've already seen (like, we've all basically confirmed james is desi at this point), but I did wanna drive a little deeper into those existing ones as well as add thoughts of my own. I am planning on using most if not all of these to write my own rendition of the potter-verse canon, but feel free to use any of them you see in here! I'd love to invite more dialogue, particularly about more thoughtful name changes (like seriously if y'all have anymore suggestions on that front please send them to me, I don't want to be totally ignorant or off base so any feedback is super appreciated)
