idk how the fuck I got on this subject, but I realized I've never listened to Drake's album Take Care all the way through. It is a genuinely fascinating cultural artifact given the careers of so many people who were guests on the album.
Literally everybody who guested on it made it big (The Weeknd, Kendrick, Nicki) or they were already fucking huge (Rihanna, Birdman, Rick goddamn Ross, Andre 3000) and it's really fascinating how... artistically malleable Drake is? Or to put it more bluntly, he doesn't have a strong enough sense of style to hold up against somebody who has an actual goddamn Vision.
Drake's flow is bad. Like super fucking bad. Compare his solo stuff to the ones where he has a guest. He sounds so much better because he's being dragged up rhythmically by somebody who actually understands how this shit works.
The only time I ever get the sense he's being genuine is when he goes deep into the self-loathing. There is deep and genuine anxiety there that's extremely hard to fake. And when you compare it to the, ah, braggadocio of some of the other stuff, it's absolutely fucking wild.
Also this man has issues with women you can see from space, hoo dilly. I genuinely have no idea whether he has had sex with underage girls, but it would not surprise me one bit. He's suspicious, controlling, always looking for an angle, perpetually insecure. But he also thinks he deserves whatever he wants.
Obviously there's a lot of hindsight on this analysis. But it still makes you go "Huh" when you look back on it.

Absolute favorite twitter level discourse is when people are like "yaoi is bad because it's created by women which makes it evil and fetishizing, but bara is good because it's made by gay men for gay men" as if the creator of bara wasn't one of Japan's most famous alt-right hyper-nationalistic conservatives and also porn writer on the side who trained and maintained his own personal militia to enact a failed coup on the modernizing government in 1970 and then proceeded to publicly commit suicide after because he had a fetishistic obsession with ritual disembowelment

I noticed something you said about MAWS Lois in that chart you made. How she was only like surface level diversity without much thought. I think the She Ra reboot is similar. I remember many of the characters of color didn't have their cultures, kingdoms, and how they were affected by the horde were not truly examined in a meaningful way. I liked how Lunar Boy did that but didn't really focus on the colonizers either! It really focused on this White girl and it kinda gave off White savior ?
Thank you for the little compliment on Lunar Boy! It was important for us that colonization was acknowledged (since so much of Indonesian queer history was affected by it) but we didn't want to center the colonizers in a narrative about Indonesian queer joy either :>
And!! Yes! For sure the She-Ra reboot has essentially the same problem as MAWS but in a fantasy setting (compared to MAWS that takes place in futuristic America). She-Ra is what happens when white queer writers were put in charge of what they considered a fantasy escapist paradise where queer representation doesn't have to be speculated on, it's canon! Buuut when it comes to BIPOC representation, suddenly they're very wishy washy about confirming the character's races. And some of the "confirmed races" were clearly not thought through (lest we forget the latina Catra incident among many instances).
It feels like a show where the writers were clearly fans of ATLA, but instead of taking in any of the politics regarding the optics of war and colonization, they just like the friendship dynamics and tropes. She-Ra is a white savior narrative through and through, even with their attempt to retcon the previous She-Ra as a WOC. She-Ras come from a colonizing group (Eternians) so it's a savior narrative no matter what they do :p my memory is vague on what happened in She-Ra but I did make an insta story review on it (it's my very first one in fact) where I go into deep detail about the problems with the show as I watched it.

it's rough since it's my first big undertaking and I was doing a casual reaction at first but I think it still holds up! Also keep in mind I wrote this before Nate Stevenson transitioned.

Dude, Ethel Cain is so currently awful. Wtf
dude, why are you trying to start drama in my inbox. i can listen to an album without condoning everything the artist ever did. also i dont even know what you’re referring to but im guessing i don’t agree that it’s as egregious as you think, just based on your tone here.

Over here bashing my head into a wall @ people calling Hold Them Down problematic like NO ITS NOT. IT IS NOT PROBLEMATIC TO HAVE A REALISTIC REPRESENTATION OF ANYTHING. YOURE PROBLEMATIC FOR TRYING TO BURY AND ERASE ONE OF THE FEW PIECES OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA WE HAVE THAT SO SHAMELESSLY AND WONDERFULLY PORTRAYS THESE ISSUES.
Like what is their issue? This shit HAPPENS and turning your nose up at even the implication of someone victimising someone in such a way is directly contributing to the issues and stigma around SA that caused such harm to survivors and victims, and which allows perpetrators to get away free. JFC

Just a quick request ~
Please don't separate my art from me as an artist.
There's a post circulating about how it's alright to separate art from artist if you want to appreciate just the art.
I starkly disagree with that stance. People did that to me before and it felt incredibly offensive and objectifying.
If you can't see the artist in their art, you're not looking hard enough. Don't do that to the art, don't do that to the artist. If you hate me, hate my creations as well, don't be an apologist coward.
And if you love my art but hate me as a person, hateromance me. Don't go around proving how you can't see the humanity in the creation. How you can't see the person beyond their way of communication.

I'm going to get fucking persecuted but whatever. Yes, I like the DSMP. It helped me a lot, and it was a source of happiness for me years ago. To today I find I cannot deny that it is still a big interest of mine, even if it's not as hardcore. I do not support most of the CCs (i.e Wilbur, Dream). I liked the story, I liked the characters. It hurts that so much has changed but I won't lie to myself that it doesn't still make me happy. So yeah, I like the DSMP for what it used to be. I think I always will.

"that media is problematic!" it is fiction
"but its based off real life" the characters are fictional
"if you like this media you support the actions of thr characters" it is fiction, also don't assume someone supports the actions of characters until they ouright say it
"the creator of that media is problematic" well the media isnt the creator, and neither am i
i feel like this is kind of basic understanding man
