I watched James Somerton's final video, and all I got was this 6 page document
As soon as I learned his final unreleased video was on Revolutionary Girl Utena, I knew I had to hate watch it. I didn't know that I'd spend the following 4 hours making a comprehensive doc on everything I hated about it. But here we are.
The TLDR (is this too long to be a TLDR?)
The intro section, as well as Part 2, are directly plagiarized from wikipedia. The rest is unclear.
He makes a “haha this show is so weird right guys joke 10 different times
He reads Anthy as so emotionally stunted she literally has to be taught how to think for herself, and believes that being the rose bride makes her feel good
He says that his reading is ‘vastly different” from the rest of the community, before boldly stating that this is because he sees it as a “deeply allegorical and symbolic story”
He sees the sexual abuse as “not to be taken literally”
Insists that the show be separated into parts that are strictly literal and strictly allegorical for the entirety of parts 3 and 4, before making the contradictory move of analyzing characters as allegories during part 5
The only characters that get dedicated sections are Akio and Dios, who he doesn’t believe are the same person.
He says Dios gets his powers by “deflowering women”
He calls Akio, known child predator, a chaotic bisexual
Uses 14 year old SA survivor Anthy’s passive personality to make a joke about her being a bottom
His final point is that Utena was the real prince all along
There are no citations
Anyway, full version for people who hate themselves under the cut. With time codes, because I cite my sources.
Part 1: Intro
This entire section is almost exclusively quoted from the Wikipedia article for Revolutionary Girl Utena. Words have been changed, but the order at which certain topics come up is not. Highlights include:
0:56 In his introduction of Be-Papas, lists the founding members in literally the exact same order as Wikipedia.
1:40-2:00 His list of Be-Papas previous works is lifted entirely from wikipedia, only with the words changed. This leads to a strange moment at 1:52 where he claims Be-papas ‘lent their talents to’ Neon Genesis Evangelion, a show which started production at least a year before Be-papas was founded. On the wikipedia article for Utena, this is instead referring to the previous work of Shinya Hasegawa and Yōji Enokido
4:23 he uses a quote by Yūichirō Oguro describing the production as a “tug of war”. He seems to have lifted this in its entirety from Wikipedia, as he does not cite the actual source it is from (the box set companion book, btw)
As for James Somerton originals, at 0:44 he claims that out of all magical girl series,”none to my knowledge have been more discussed and dissected than the 1997 series Revolutionary Girl Utena” He will go back on this at 5:05, where he states that “Sailor Moon takes the lion’s share of discussion” in regard to influential magical girl anime
Part 2: Part 1
(At least I know I’m not funny, unlike James Somerton)
Speaking of which. Here is every single time he makes a “wow this show is sooooo weird you guys” joke: 6:00, 8:50, 10:40, 10:58, 13:46, 17:07, 24:16, 30:34, 41:19, 48:01
Here’s every time the punchline to the joke is the existence of Nanami, a character who he otherwise completely disregards: 10:56, 12:05, 16:22, 42:40
6:16 Claims that the “Apocalypse saga” and “Akio Ohtori saga’ are two names for the same several episodes, depending on the release. This is untrue. Instead, different releases either only have the Apocalypse saga, or split the episodes into an Akio Ohtori saga and then the Apocalypse saga.
7:58 Claims Utena intervening on Anthy’s behalf begins the first duel. While this happens in the movie, Touga intervenes in the scene he uses clips from (like literally right after the shot he uses in the video). Utena only gets drawn into the duels when Wakaba’s love note to Saionji is posted. Youtuber Noralities’ Utena video also gets this wrong, which makes me wonder if this was copied.
9:09 Claims Akio’s “End of the World” moniker is actually more closely translated to “Apocalypse”. In reality, the translation moves away from a more apocalyptic reading, with 世界の果て (Sekai no hate) apparently translating closer to “the furthest reach of a known world” or “edge of the world”. (Love the implications of this translation, but I digress)
9:10 As can be assumed from the previous point, this means I can’t find any sources that point to them not using the title “apocalypse” for religious reasons
10:10 Uses Anthy’s extreme passivity under her Rose bride persona to make a top/bottom joke. I’m gonna repeat this in case you’re just skimming. He uses a trait that likely stems from years of abuse, (possibly exaggerated by the persona Anthy uses to manipulate people), and uses it to call her a bottom.
He also just doesn’t seem to understand how the whole point of Utena constantly telling Anthy that she's just a normal girl who should make more friends is framed as Utena imposing her will on Anthy, just as much as the previous Engaged have done.
11:54 Apologies in advance for my most “um, actually!” point yet, but technically his statement that Anthy stops being host to the Sword of Dios is wrong. Akio literally pulls a sword out of her chest in the final duel. It's a more evil-looking sword of Dios, granted.
13:02 !!! CANTARELLA SCENE ALERT !!! He interprets it as them fighting over Akio?? Which like. I will allow people to have their own interpretations of vague and symbolic scenes. I will. I swear. This is not technically incorrect. It just makes me want to eat my own intestines.
14:44 Bad Anthy take #1: He states Anthy “is emotionally stunted to the point where she needs people to make decisions for her because she does not know how to think for herself” This ignores several moments of Anthy clearly making her own choices throughout the show, including the suicide attempt Somerton mentions about a minute prior. This also strips Anthy of what little agency she has throughout the story, usually exerted through messing with Utena or Nanami. (The fact that she repeatedly makes choices that contribute to her own abuse is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of her character, and it's a shame that Summerton’s ‘reading’ of the story completely disregards that)
Additionally, he once again reads Utena ‘urging Anthy to think for herself” in the first arc as an unambiguously good move, and not as something critiqued in the show.
14:52 Summerton reads the Swords of hatred as symbolizing men’s hatred specifically. Again, I’m trying not to completely disregard differing interpretations to a show like Utena, but this feels very simplistic, especially considering the harm we see aimed towards Anthy by other women
16:42 Here he claims that his reading of the story seems to be “vastly different” from the bulk of Utena discourse. What is this reading? That the show shouldn’t be read literally. Or, in his words, “[we can interpret] Revolutionary Girl Utena as a deeply allegorical and symbolic story about the struggles of coming of age amidst widespread institutional corruption in a high school and which describes a passive culture of inaction in regard to brazen instances of domestic exploitation in which there is not only a question about the caporeality of the events transpiring but also which events can be taken for granted and which events are meant to signify abstract sociological institutions.” The idea that he believes this is in any way a new reading of the material honestly baffles me.
Part 3: Part 2
17:48 through 18:50 differently quotes the Wikipedia article for postmodernism. He even makes a joke at 17:55 about Wikipedia. Please kill me.
The first three themes he lists at 19:11 are just the three main themes listed on the Revolutionary Girl Utena Wikipedia page. What was that about a “vastly different” reading, James?
You’re gonna have to take my word for it, but this section is so short because it's just him talking about the various ways the story can’t be taken literally. He does, ironically, call this a hot take.
Part 4: Part 3
Here’s where the reading falls apart folks
At 23:15, he states that some things in Utena are allegorically coded, while others are to be taken literally. This is true. However, he seems to take this to mean that some parts of the show are Strictly Literal, while others are Strictly Allegorical for things going on in the Literal World.
This is apparently why he prefers the Anime to the Movie, where there basically is no separation between the Literal and Allegorical
This take is bizarre to me for several reasons, but here is my favorite. At several points, he mentions how Revolutionary Girl Utena is a work of Magical Realism. Magical Realism is literally defined by its blending of the “literal” and “allegorical”, the mix of fantastical elements in a mundane, realistic setting. This idea of the impossibility of a blurred line, that Utena must either have lore where the magic is all real and means nothing, or dedicated allegory segments quarantined from the rest of the story, is contrary to the very idea of Magical Realism.
I can’t help but wonder if Somerton took his mentions of Magical realism from a previous work, due to how little it is consistent with his final argument. Either way, this section suggests a great lack of creativity in his analysis, a shame for such a creative work.
24:36: Shiori slander, for those who care
After this he gets really worked up about people assuming symbolism in everything, even when the author ‘doesn’t make it clear something is symbolic’. He shuts down a reading of a shot in the Lord of the Rings. Miley Cyrus is there? Very The Curtains Were Blue of him.
28:22 Claims that Wakaba is the key to telling where the Strictly Literal segments end and the Strictly Allegorical segments begin. He states that, under this lens, deeply personal moments of character suffering such as all of the sexual abuse and Anthy’s suicide attempt (which he literally cites) should be read as symbolic and be “approached with uncertainty rather than confusion”. (28:24-29:13)
This also somewhat falls apart when you consider Wakaba is the jeep in the movie's car chase
And then he rants about people not liking his Attack on Titan video for a bit. Since its potential symbolism also doesn't follow hard enough rules to be symbolism. Once again, the separation of “fact vs allegory” I haven’t watched AOT, so that's all I’ll say.
Part 5: Part 4
Thank god this part is short. Much like Dios’ on-screen presence.
32:55 Makes the extremely bold claim that Dios is not Akio. As in, never even became Akio. because Dios is Strictly Allegorical.
Just to be a pedant, this is pretty explicitly disproven in the show
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Confusingly, both earlier and later he will address these two as the same character.
33:04 he also explains the root of Akio’s name in a tone that suggests this is supplemental information and not like. Literally something he explains out loud in the show?
Part 6: Part 5
This section is nearly entirely about Akio Ohtori. I would like to note that him and Dios are the only characters with dedicated segments.
38:30 The part where he states that Dios gets his powers from deflowering women.
38:46 Claims, once again, that Akio’s abuse of Anthy “may not be literal”.
38:59 “the instance of exploitation here is used because assault has deep roots as indicating that akio's gender is the source of his imbalance”  THE ASSAULT IS ABOUT AKIO NOW???
39:45 Bad Anthy take #2: “Anthy’s conformity to the Rose bride is based around the fact that she feels good being subservient because this is the only thing in her life that has ever brought her any kind of positive reward”. This is a direct quote. Anyway, I can’t think of any instances in the show where Anthy’s subservience gives her a positive reward, except maybe when she’s intentionally using it to manipulate others. As for her feeling good being the rose bride. She tries to commit suicide. Dude.
Side tangent, but isn’t this exactly what Akio says during the final 2 episodes? That Anthy enjoys being a witch? Is the main villain, who consistently says things during that very episode that are blatantly false, our source of information for this take? I guess so, since this is the dedicated Akio section.
At 40:20 he decides to introduce the concept of Anthy, Akio, and Utena as stand-ins for wider concepts, which is antithetical to his approach in analysis beforehand
Part 7: Part 6
42:40 he finally acknowledges that he’s been spending too much time talking about Akio, and literally no time on characters like Nanami
46:10 states that Utena’s exclusive motivation “is to protect Anthy from the predatorial intentions of the other dualists”, which disregards the fact, which she states herself, that she was largely participating in the duels and protecting Anthy to feel like a prince
48:04 The part where he says that Akio has ‘chaotic Bi vibes’ in regards to him sleeping with Touga, who is 17 and implied to be a long-term victim
Part 8: Part 7
54:01: His concluding point is that Utena was the real prince all along.
In true Somerton fashion, the video then ends over a scrolling wall of patrons, with not a single citation in sight.

A little trivia for those that just got introduced to Ultraman thanks to Ultraman Rising
You know that part where baby kaiju Emi is shown a kids cartoon with an earworm of a song?
Tumblr media
That cartoon is real!! It's called Kaiju Step Wandabada and it stars cute kid versions of different monsters from different Ultraman series (mostly the original from 1966 wich Rising is also based on). The opening shown in the movie is in stop-motion while the cartoon itself is in 2D.
Tumblr media
The Ultraman heroes don't appear in person, but bizarrely enough they seem to exist as fictional superheroes in-universe, with the kaiju kids having toys and dolls of them. It's no surprise Emi liked it so much! She would be right at home in this show!
Tumblr media
The episodes are 5 minutes long, there are two seasons of 26 episodes each for a total of 52. The official Tsurubaya channel has the first episodes of both seasons uploaded...
youtube
youtube
...but the rest were sadly only up for a limited time cuz gotta sell the dvds. What is officially available online right now is a series of educational shorts.
Some years ago Marvel Comics got the rights to make Ultraman comics and made a mini-series called "The Rise of Ultraman" (no relation), and these Kaiju Step designs got to appear as part of in-universe instructional videos about dealing with monsters and aliens:
Tumblr media
So let's have a quick rundow on the little monsters and where each comes from:
Tumblr media
Pigmon or Pig-chan is the main protagonist and new kid in town (forest). This coral-looking guy is one of the most iconic and recurring ultra monsters and the go-to kid-friendly one, as he stood out among the original set of kaiju for being friendly and heroic (as well as human-sized). He has the bad habit of dying in many of his apperences but fortunately that's not the case here.
Tumblr media
Kanegon or Kane-chan is the second member of the protagonist trio, and the most energic and simple-minded. A coin purse monster that eats money, and usually a human kid under a curse. He actually pre-dates Ultraman, appearing in the black-and-white anthology series Ultra Q wich had monsters but not superheroes. Fortunately this one doesn't need to eat money and was born a kaiju.
Tumblr media
Alien Dada or Dada-chan is the reliable but temperamental inventor of the trio, he dreams of building a rocket ship. One of the most iconic villains from the original 1966 Ultraman (and that's saying a lot), it's a weird alien with weird powers looking for human subjects for his weird experiments, like testing his shrinking ray. He really earns the name of a weird art movement.
Tumblr media
Gomora or Gomo-chan is probably the most iconic ultra kaiju of all. Remember how in Ultraman Rising there is this whole sequence where the dad omniously talks about fighting him? There is a good reason for that. Gomora had the only two-parter in the original 1966 series, and was able to actually defeat Ultraman in their first figh. He's essentially Godzilla if he lived underground rather than underwater (He's even been a good guy and had a robot counterpart). Here, however, Gomora is a chill guy who's passionate about agriculture. (btw, you can also spot Gomora in Rising on a screen around an hour and eight minutes into the movie).
Tumblr media
Red King or just Red is another iconic ultra dino, that looks like corn. In the show he's brute but well-meaning, and has a friendly sport rivalry with Kemur-chan. But in the Ultraman series he's a sadistic and murderous bully who beats up weaker monsters but gets his butt kicked rather easily by Ultraman (although more recent incarnations have have been more positive, both in his fighting ability and sometimes even becoming a loving father). (and yes, you are right, he's not red).
Tumblr media
Jamira or Jami-chan is a passionate archeologist and fossil collector in the show, whereas in the original Ultraman he was a human astronaut that got infected by a virus. He hasn't appeared much beyond his debut... but doesn't need to, as his episode was very memorable in how sad and tragic it was. I can't imagine the target audience's whiplash seeing this cute creature one moment collecting fossils and the next having a horrible sad death. I guess one could say the same for most of the characters, but this one takes the cake.
Tumblr media
Miclas or Mic-chan is the youngest character, a baby, and loves bugs. He was one of the "capsule monsters" from the second ultra series, Ultra Seven. Sometimes the titular ultra wouldn't be able to fight himself so he would summon up to three very loyal monsters from little capsules to do the fighting instead (or at least buy some time, they weren't very strong). One was a triceratops, another was a robot bird, but the most iconic had to be Miclas because really, what even is he? Some kind of bull toad hybrid? (By the way, fun fact, the capsule monsters were one of the inspirations for Pokemon).
Tumblr media
King Joe (yes, that's his name) or Joe-chan is a robot controlled by alien invaders and is to Ultra Seven what Gomora is to the original Ultraman: he's the subject of a two-parter and was able to beat the hero to a pulp at first, made harder to fight by his ability to divide into three flying parts. Fortunately this Joe is very shy and very friendly.
Tumblr media
Eleking or Ele-chan from Ultra Seven is another of the "mascot" ultra kaiju. If two ultra kaiju have to appear in anything, chances are they will be Gomora and Eleking. In fact, in Ultraman Rising you can see Eleking in a monitor right next to Gomora (around an hour and eight minutes in). It's a dinosaur-like eel monster with (of course) electric powers, and the enforcer of an all-female bug-like alien species set to conquer the earth, that are nonetheless very affectionate towards their pet-weapon dino-eel. The fact that Eleking's masters are always women may explain why the Kaiju Step one is a very femenine and elegant girl despite having King in the name, though no less dangerously electric.
Tumblr media
Alien Guts or Guts-chan here is a very little alien bird child who can multiply into three separate individuals to cause all the destruction in their sincere attempts to help out. The original duo from Ultra Seven meanwhile are ruthless alien invaders that are infamous for freaking crucifying the aforementioned hero, leading to decades of japanese media having christian imagery for the sake of looking cool, most notably Neon Genesis Evangelion, because these birds did it first and it looked so cool.
Tumblr media
Alien Kemur or Kemu-chan is a very agile alien that comes from the distant future of 2020 to consume humans and extend his lifespan. Here he's a friendly but competitive ninja from the present, and has a rivalry with Red King being the speed to his strenght. Like Kanegon, he pre-dates Ultraman, being from Ultra Q.
Tumblr media
Motokureron or Kureron-chan originates from the whimsical, fairy-tale like Ultraman Taro. A kid found him as a baby and fed him until he grew to giant size, but when the kid couldn't feed him anymore he turned destructive; fortunately he was easy to pacify with food, including the kind that made him shrink. He retains his glutonny and clumsiness in Kaiju Step, often doing the bad thing (tm) so the others can teach the kids in the audience why you shouldn't do the bad thing (tm).
Tumblr media
Nova or No-chan originates from the surprisingly dark Ultraman Leo. This creepy and bizarre ghost-like alien created a red mist that made people go crazy, and manipulated a kid with illusions of his deceased family, and under his cloth there are lots of tentacles and a scythe. So of course, in Kaiju Step she's a happy and energic little girl that loves to sing.
Tumblr media
Mugera or Muge-chan is by far the most obscure kaiju of the cast. She's from the 2001 series Ultraman Cosmos, the one where the titular hero protects monsters instead of fighting them. Mugera is an ET-like cryptid that lives in an amusement park that only kids can see, with the ability to fix toys and heal wounds with her magic. After the amusement park closes down she phones home and the protagonists have to protect her from the goverment wich is a little too eager to shoot down the UFO that came to pick her up. In Kaiju Step she likes reading and plants.
And that was your daily dose of kaiju sugar, that may be overdose because you probably already met Emi. Cheers!

unnecessarily deep autism dive into a single side character from the robot monkey show lol
this guy ⬇️ is Mandarin. He is responsible for kicking off the plot and ruining lives via silly antics.
Tumblr media
He was the leader of the hyperforce until he was banished to space prison for being too power hungry. We don't see a whole lot of him as leader, but note how he has the same robotic modifications as everyone else.
Tumblr media
Shortly after banishing him, everyone was put into a stasis for 50(?) years. Mandarin was alive and aging the whole time until they meet again, 50 years later. Most of his electronics are destroyed/rotting away.
Tumblr media
Gonna skip a bit ahead here. Mandy fucks up one too many times and is MIA for the rest of the series. He's replaced by Mandarin... 2! (I'm gonna call him Skelemandarin to distinguish the two). He's a clone made of formless (a sort of black sludge). He's not dead, but he isn't exactly alive either.
Tumblr media
I only recently noticed this... he's modeled after Mandy before the cybernetic prosthetics! He still has arms and ears. Inch resting considering the person who made Skelemandarin was more familiar with him as a baby rather than as a leader...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regardless he's still just as cruel and heartless as before lol. He loses one of his hands, but he doesn't seem to bleed.
Tumblr media
The next time we see him he's starting to spiral. He's losing fur and weight, and has a new prosthetic claw to replace his hand.
Tumblr media
He's thrown into acid and loses the left side of his face.
Tumblr media
He just keeps deteriorating and getting more fucked up.
Tumblr media
What is his fucking problem. I wasn't expecting a show about robot monkeys to have such deep lore. Watching his perpetual downward spiral over 52 episodes was cool as fuck btw you can watch the entire series for free on yt just sayin ❤️

Cedric and Wormwood's childhood together
In the "Substitute Cedric", at the end of the episode, Cedric talks about teaching the royal prep students a spell that can turn rocks into ravens. The fandom also noticed this, because somehow it may be implying that Wormwood was a rock before. And I also believe that this is true, or else they wouldn't have put that in the episode because it would cause misinterpretation of their characters- there's a huge chance of this being true.
Cedric knows the spell, which means that he did it before. The only raven we have in the show is Wormwood, who happens to be his familiar. So like. Okay.
CEDRIC DID THE SPELL AND MADE WORMWOOD. It's not like my first headcanon: that they met when Cedric was young and still at Hexley Hall, and someone in the school staff (because it's an advenced spell, Cedric can't cast it) did a spell who would guarantee Wormy's life while Cedric is still alive (or else he would already be dead by now, he's a bird, there needs to have a spell somewhere) because he's his familiar now. I believe that everyone needed to find a creature to be their familiar at some point at Hexley Hall, in the first years (because having an animal assistant is necessary). But at first I was thinking like "no, okay, Cedric found Wormwood somewhere and brought him home, they did the spell and now he's his familiar" but some days later I watched that episode and found out about the "turning rocks into ravens spell"
You know what this means? Cedric literally made Wormwood. He gave him life after a rock. So his betrayal gets more painful and has a whole different meaning.
I guess we can compare this situation to a son turning against his father, somehow. I don't believe that Wormwood sees him as a father, actually very from that. He just thinks that he was a middle schooler who cast a spell on a rock and since then Wormwood is his familiar, that's all. They grew up together, more like brothers or "best (worst) friends" I would say. @shychick-52 has a good character analysis of him in her fic "The Master Wand", that explains that Wormwood's anger comes from the fact that he was just as miserable as Cedric, but Cedric got help. He got out of the dark, but he didn't held Wormwoods hand (wing) to pull him from there too. While he was getting better and being influenced by Sofia to be a good person, the same didn't happened to Wormwood, who was so deep in his hatred, insecurity (not getting other people's approval and believing that just being nice wasn't enough), revenge that he didn't change his mind. While Cedric had Sofia to help him, Wormwood had no one. It was assumed that just because Cedric got better, his raven would get better too, because of couse, a familiar obeys and thinks the same way as his master, right? He could have been saved by Cedric or Clover. But that didn't happened. And I still think he deserves a redemption arc btw, or at least an episode.
But yes, the thought about Wormwood being created after a rock by Cedric it's implied in stf and it makes the whole situation more tense. Imagine how Wormwood was feeling, imagine how Cedric was feeling. Wormwood's reasons are understandable but it's a little weird the fact that he choose to betray Cedric so fast with someone who he doesn't even know yet (Prisma). It was REALLY FAST. He didn't think twice. And it confuses me why he choose to be so many years by Cedric's side, when he could have just ran away like that at any moment. If he always thought that Cedric was an idiot then he should have ran to another master years ago, because as we can see, he doesn't even think twice before leaving him.
When Cedric says something like "what about all those years of friendship" it's not just about their friendship. (Headcanon part) It's about when the whole class needed to turn a rock into an animal to make that animal their familiar, for each animal there was a different spell and all his classmates got the best ones first: owls, cats. He got one of the last ones, a raven, the one no one wanted, just like him.
And he was the only one who repeatedly was making feathers, vegetables, while everyone was laughing, making fun of him and whispering about "him being him" again, looking at him with disgust, asking why he was still trying- and the situation was starting to get humiliating. Everyone had already finished. And after so many tries, everyone looking at him with a judgemental look like he was in the middle of the room (just like how happened at the incident, he remembers that really well), Cedric gave up.
Maybe he watched while his teacher did the "familiar will live until their master is alive" spell in each one of the students, making sure that they all were now officially connected. But Cedric didn't had one, so he was the only one who just watched in silence. His teacher went to him, and as always he told Cedric to keep trying later, which made him feel a little better, but not a lot.
He kept trying, trying and trying after school, maybe at night (Hexley Hall boarding school headcanon time). And when he finally did it, the rock turned into a baby bird, and Cedric started crying out of happiness. He was able to make a real crow- and the baby was just in the palm of his hand making little noises and looking at him with a confused look, with not even a thought going through his mind. The baby raven didn't knew a thing but Cedric loved him already, just like the feeling of getting your first dog but this time with the whole stituation of the spell, Cedric being pressured and judged, and now he finally did it.
He immediately knew that this bird would be his best friend. He was a little weird looking, just like a little fluff ball, but Cedric was a little weird too, that was one more thing that they had in common. And he was so proud and loved his new bird so much that he wouldn't mind even if he didn't had feathers. What happened was that in the next day everyone went to class with their new familiars and Cedric was there with his baby bird, all proud of himself. Everyone saw this and some even thought that he got the bird somewhere, that he was pretending the spell worked just so that he wouldn't make a fool out of himself in today's class. But somehow they proved it was true, or the teacher just simply believed in him, the thing was that he finally had his familiar and the spell was casted on him to make his familiar permanently. And since then he carried the bird everywhere.
He gave him the name Wormwood after the herb. Maybe there was a funny situation with a wormwood and the baby bird involved, and that's when Cedric decided his name. But the thing is: they were always together since their childhood. I'm not really giving a deep dive into their relationship right now, so there's no conclusion to this post, but I wanted to share my headcanon. I made a drawing yesterday and their childhood together is in my mind ever since.
That's what I made (visual representation of the scenes):

palisade 52 / finalisade pt. 7
THEY SAID IT
"I think if Valence saw me now, part of them would be proud of me. And I'm happy enough with that" what if i just cried forever
like, it's such a resigned sentence. they're not sure valence would approve of how they've reshaped their entire life in their honor. but it still feels like such a victory.
also, like, fucking obviously valence would be proud. ofc brnine does not know that. but c'mon.
three years and seven months, by the way, since pzn 38, which i believe is the last time ali said "valence" in character as broun or brnine.
and to say this to jesset to convince him not to throw his life away for his ideals--not to sacrifice himself to take out one of a thousand antagonists--brnine saved jesset from valence's death. god. fuck
and then jesset replying, "it's this. it's tears forever. you don't get to win. you just have to keep trying, and losing people." and "it's a vow to fail." season about grief. this is the flip side of the blue channel making it through the stellar combustor arc because they're willing to barter with their own mortality. it's an awful way to survive. but you have to.
i mean, there's no real way to answer "how do you keep living when death is inevitable". that's one of the big ones. but also thinking back to... idk, maybe the violet cove arc?? not entirely sure but i remember glossing an early arc as "how do you continue in the face of opposition" (this was back when the faction game kept doing massive smackdowns). getting increasingly abstract but it's the same question basically. and it's a good act 2 question! it is perhaps the only act 2 question! so, anyway. enjoying this.
think jesset needs to talk to perennial honestly. compare notes on how it all repeats and how to find hope knowing that. especially with future having shown him (reflected to him?) the world he's dreading. (fucked up, btw. fucked up!!!) (also, "i've seen the future, and no one is going to be sad about me" immediately reminded me of "i have seen the stars and they will not save us".)
hearing motion speak again after jesset left the exoskeleton and realizing that he'd been speaking with her voice was spine-chilling, great voice acting on austin's part
the hug..... the forehead kiss.......... they're just two bros
really pleased that levi was part of the scene, given how he mirrors jesset. i'm actually very excited to see where he goes in p3
other episode notes
glad we got some explicit discussion of where clem's actually going in this story. i still think her storyline is played out but i would accept her merging fully with the iconoclasts and floating around in space forever.
cas'alear's pitch is an interesting bit of setup. it does feel like we're kind of just waiting to be told what the big shift into p3 is gonna be, which takes some of the steam out of the palisade finale.
congrats to leap on winning
thisbe struggling with the weight of free will... i love her
august dreaming about a reunion with wakeful is so upsetting and good
maidstone cross feels like a character from an entirely separate season lmfao. it has been so long
are there... only two episodes left of palisade????????

I feel like that one episode of fairly odd parents when Veronica is typing to Trixie. That's how I feel whenever I type something out for you 😭. Anyways, I wanted to ask you about - Is there specific songs you personally think goes with each tpof / btd characters + your fanon / ocs? I think we all can agree that Sal's whole entire thing is the song Bitches love me by MSI but I wanna hear from your opinions :)

DON'T READ THE EPISODES WITHOUT READING THE BOOKS!!
Irratino thinks hard. He is trying to solve mysteries just like Logico - but not just that. He needs to solve the mystery of Logico most importantly. Where would Logico go first to solve his own kidnapping?
IRRATINO: [lightbulb] The house!
He runs back to the apartment. But he can’t find any clues. Maybe because it didn’t happen there. But when he goes outside, murder strikes again.
IRRATINO: Aw, come on!
The mayor of the town is dead. I thought the mayor was Mayor Honey, but I guess it wasn’t. A couple of lowlifes are hanging around.
SMOKY: Hey, look, a murder! Where’s Logico? IRRATINO: Logico was kidnapped!
Charcoal starts sobbing.
TANGERINE: Chill the fuck out, he’s pulling a prank. LAPIS: You filthy LIAR! IRRATINO: No… I’m serious. I have to find him.
Everyone shuts up for a moment. This is really bad.
IRRATINO: …he would want me to solve the murder of the mayor.
The suspects scatter. Charcoal drives away in a gas guzzler, spray-painted with death metal band logos. Hope he didn’t provide any crucial clues??
The rest of the suspects know Irratino is terrible at finding clues, so they’re not worried about anything.
TANGERINE: I don’t like the fried onion that restaurant has. IRRATINO: Hmm… elaborate. TANGERINE: There was a hair in it. IRRATINO: That has to be a clue.
Smoky is sitting in a running van, holding a bottle of wine.
IRRATINO: WHOA! That is not legal! SMOKY: Look, Inspector, I’m so tall, I can get away with anything! You’re pretty tall too, but, you’re not very scary.
Irratino sighs. He’s right! To find Logico, he has to be Logico.
IRRATINO: "I am small and British, and I don’t like things I can’t see… so I must make them visible to my giant eye." I will use… a sniffing dog!
In reality, Logico is not fond of dogs. But it does help.
IRRATINO: I think… it’s Superfan Smoky! No kid likes the taste of wine! SMOKY: Oh wow! This is just like a Midnight mystery!
That’s the exact same thing he said the last time he was the killer.
SMOKY: Can you sign my autograph book?
Irratino can’t help but soften. No one’s ever asked for his autograph before!
IRRATINO: Yeah, sure, kid.
He is focused on finding Logico. But it’s nice to be appreciated.
The end!
I really like when the extra detail is something random like the car they drove (smoky is still 8 btw) because it gives more useless information about the suspects I desperately need. Like I knew Lapis had a decked-out motorcycle the second I saw that was an option, and poor tange what midlife crisis are they going through??

On water fairies, Suna’s victimhood, and KaySun’s relationship development
Yalı Çapkını Episode 52 KaySun analysis 🖤
Hey! I know we’re all upset with Suna’s course of action this episode (personally, I do believe the writers are trying to ruin her for the drama and reytings), but on the bright side—we got more KaySun than we ever got before, and more importantly, we got a fragman that suggests more development for our favorite angsty couple.
Suna’s Victimhood and Lack of Emotional Control
Suna has spent most of her life at the hands of abusive men, like her father, Saffet (who her father forced to marry), and even the Korhans. She’s been betrayed by that fck@$$ driver Abidon as well. Basically she knows the trauma of abandonment and mistreatment…much like Kaya.
Suna starts off this series as a very weak and naive character, but thanks to Ifakat’s manipulations, plus Kaya’s encouragement, to a certain extent—she grows the courage to become the master of her own fate, and the captain of her own soul, as that old poem goes.
However, the problem now is this—Suna believes that in taking revenge, she needs to bulldoze everything that is against her. That’s right, she’s now developed a “If you’re not with me, you’re against me,” mindset. While I want to believe that the writers will help change this later on, it must be said that this behavior is alarmingly evident throughout the episode. This is displayed when she gets slightly jealous of Pelin, just because Kaya told Suna not to pull a pregnant woman’s hair…yeah, Suna is really messed up right now.
But you know what else is messed up? Suna didn’t have to do all that with that driver, who, btw, is always preying at her when she’s at her weakest and most vulnerable. Although Suna realizes what she’s doing is WRONG af and pulls away, it’s still a terrible thing for her to have done. We see her guilt when she continuously lashes out at Kaya despite his kindness and support for her throughout the episode.
Suna’s problem is that she seems to think her past negative experiences combined with her need to be assertive cancels out the need for her to be, well, a nice and decent person on the surface. Suna spent her whole life with her emotions repressed; now she’s not sure how to let them out.
Moreover, Suna’s idea of love is not ideal since she didn’t really have good examples for it growing up. I hope she’ll realize soon that Kaya’s kindness is not to be trifled with, and she can’t take him for granted forever. I’m hoping Ifakat works her magic and drills it into Suna’s head—Kaya! Is! A! Near-Perfect! Husband!
Kaya’s Kindness + Making Up For His Mistakes
Kaya has always been empathetic to a fault, despite his clear anger issues and abandonment trauma. After all, he’s stronger—personality-wise, at least—than Suna, not to mention he’s older and wiser and more world-weary to the different types of people in this world. So he knows how to play the game. He’s consistent enough to know that while Pelin is a bad guy, it’s not wise to pull the hair of someone who’s pregnant and carrying the child of the favorite grandchild of the Korhan patriarch.
Now, last episode, Kaya clearly lost control when he felt angry and betrayed by Suna for leaving his side. After all, they were supposed to be a team, and his abandonment issues came creeping up. (Props to him for hurting himself only and never trying to hurt Suna, but that’s still bad behavior). I like to think that this episode is Kaya making up for it. After all, he and Suna struck a deal: That something like this (her sneaking out without telling him) won’t ever happen again. And if there’s one thing about Kaya Sönmez, it’s the fact that he keeps his end of the bargain. So it’s terrifying to imagine what will happen if Suna creeps into betrayal territory again.
The point is, Kaya acted up last episode. And now? He’s trying to make it all up to Suna. He’s gonna show her his best face. Now it’s up to her to show him hers. I genuinely believe he was always going to be Suna’s biggest supporter, seeing as he knows how hurt and traumatized she is from her past. But he’s taking an extra step because he knows how much he scared her last time with him slapping his own face and banging on their wardrobe. He’s trying his damn hardest to build up the trust again, but Suna is a bit oblivious for obvious reasons. 💀
Oh, and let’s face it. Kaya is totally jealous. He may not be ready to admit that he’s fallen for Suna for real (their relationship needs a few more deep conversations and better communication for us to reach that point, hopefully with a good halvet and endgame—writers take notes), but he has a desire to prioritize Suna as her husband and he expects Suna to do the same with him as his wife.
And the water fairy scene was SO cute, btw.
What’s Next for KaySun
So, now we’ve broken down the characters and their motives, what’s next?
Well, the fragman shows what I always expected—that Pırıl may or may not be Kaya’s ex. Perhaps this angsty development will lead to Suna opening her eyes. She’s already been jealous with Pelin before. Now if she finds out that Kaya’s ex is living in the mansion? Well, I’d like to think she’d be getting a taste of her own medicine. The thing is, as I stated earlier, Suna is so wrapped up in her own problems that she fails to see that her misfortune doesn’t make her exempt from giving others the good treatment that they deserve. And I know Kaya Sönmez deserves the world and more.
Personally, I’d like to make sure Kaya never emotionally cheats and that Suna actually realizes how fcking in love she is with Kaya because of her sheer jealousy. And I hope that this is a deliberate parallel, and that she will change for the better and be the one chasing Kaya now instead. (I am in fact going to write fics in which she grovels and realizes her mistake, a la Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, regardless).
Oh, and let’s not forget the fortune teller in the fragman. I’d like to think that it’s a sign for Suna to forget her past with that fck@$$ driver and carry on revenge with her future, which is Kaya!

So.. Nibblenephim is blind in one eye, according to this lyric. Does that mean he only has one eye, or that something happened to make one of his eyes not work? Judging from the way the guy is winking, I’d assume one of Nibbly’s eyes just doesn’t work? What do you think?
Btw it’s at 1:25:52 in the Nightmare Time 2 episode 1 “Honey Queen”.
