i've had this idea for a monkey themed animatic for years, but ive been too intimidated to try...

as a challenge, I gave myself a month to make one! (to post on the 20th anniversary!) here ya go

We just finished season 3 of Monkie Kid and AAGHH. It's so good.

It's like everything I wanted to happen in SRMT between Antauri/Mandarin is happening in the other monkey show, but reversed.

Rewrite Mandarin Relevation

Scenario, Mandarin’s stuck with SK and decides to play with him a bit, making Mandarin realize just how much he screwed up his life. Based on dialogue from She Ra double trouble.

Mandarin: This will end Skeleton King! I’m done with you ruining my life! Once I finally get rid of you, the Hyperforce will have to realize I was right and I-I could-

Skeleton King: What? Be their leader and brother again? Hahaha... You know, it took me a while, but I finally figured out your 'character'. Uses his hologram tech to project the Hyperforce.

Holo-Mandarin/SK: You try so hard to play the lone monkey but your heart's never been in it. Has it?

Mandarin: W-what do you- Stop. Stop it!

Holo-Mandarin/SK: People have hurt you, haven't they?

Holo-Antauri: They didn't believe in you.

Holo-Nova: They didn't trust you!

Chrio- Didn't need you. Replaced you.

Skeleton King: But did you ever stop to think? Maybe, we’re not the problem?

Holo-Otto: It's you. You drive them away, Mandy.

Mandarin: Why are you doing this?

Skeleton King: It's for your own good.

I just wanted to see if I can still draw these dorks... and it ended up turning into doodles. I turned my favorite of the bunch into stickers! ...I might make more

(also.... I know it’s not extremely in character, but I can imagine Antauri growing annoyed enough with Mandarin to stick his tongue out at him and quickly look away before he notices... and I found the idea too stupidly cute not to draw)

Mandarin-It didn’t seem like you wanted me to come back then. You never visited, removed nearly all of my stuff and got a fill-in for my role! You didn’t even realize the other orange monkey running around is a clone until you analyzed its DNA! I know when I’m unwanted.

what if Mandarin isn’t angry about them putting him in the prison ship but more so forgetting about him. To him, he thinks they just forgot about him. They didn’t visit, removed his room and replaced his role. But doesn’t realize they always remembered and cared and what happened was the worst thing for them to have to do

Wait wait. What if instead of being a Airbender, Mandarin was a Firebender? The Verans could be similar to a mix between the DaI Li and White Lotus in that is was a group created by a previous Avatar hundreds of years ago and is all spiritual and about protecting the balance. If Mandarin is a Firebender then him trying to mentor Nova and Antauri projecting on Chiro makes more sense. We could have things like Mandarin and Antauri having created brand new techniques based of each others fighting -

2 element styles. Antuari using the dragon breath move to create monkey mind scream airbender style (gust of piercing wind that uses sound to rattle you). Mandarin could use airbender floating techniques to better fly/levitate off the ground w/his fire. The two doing the dragon dance. Mandarin thinking Antauri isn't unlocking his air abilities to it's full potential thanks to his rigid limited beliefs. Antauri being sad Mandarin is losing sight of what makes Fire special in favor of power.

‘Kay, so, I’m not going to lie, Mandarin as a Firebender was my kneejerk. Mostly because well that’s my boy and fire Cool. But because fire has so many connotations of being destructive (both in and out of the Avatar universe), it feels too obvious to give that power to a villain without them having really strong/obvious connections to it. Plus I like the idea of Mandarin having to get creative to mold his bending into something to suit his tastes. And completely disregarding the greater portion of his masters’ teachings to do it. 

In regards to Mandarin trying to mentor Nova... Mandarin trying to “mentor” someone in a style of bending that isn’t his would be very on-brand for him, honestly. Plus we’d get a metaphor out of the deal: part of Nova’s beef with Mandarin in canon was that he made her so angry she literally exploded. Here, when she’s angry, her fire becomes uncontrollable. If the same kind of incident carries over to this AU, Mandarin - an Airbender - would have been fanning the flames of her anger.

I do mourn the loss of Mandarin and Antauri not being able to mix bending, though, because that sounds so effing cool. Though we could still maintain that Mandarin thinks Antauri’s not unlocking his potential because rigid beliefs, though in this case he’d have an even greater understanding of what he’s talking about.

Plus ehhhh I missed the opportunity to have SK be a firebender (who Mark Hamil voiced) or Antauri be an earthbender (who KMR voiced), so the least I can do is have Mandarin be an airbender (who James Hong voiced). :P

I adore the notion of the Verans being a mix of the Dai Li and White Lotus, though. That’s superb.

“Well, well. What have we here?”

No.

It couldn’t be.

That voice.

She jerked to her feet, turning, baring her teeth, heedless of the tear tracks on her face. Her hands glowed once more. “Insolent simian! Shouldn’t you be with the master? If you think to win his favor by—”

Valina stopped, abrupt.

No. That wasn’t right.

The wretch of a simian who followed her about was half skeletal in nature—flesh and bone, fit with a terrible little lobster claw of a hand. This creature…

It, he, hovered off of the ground, hands on his knees. His fur grew in a long mustache and eyebrows. Bandages covered his head, his tail. He wore a leather breastplate, and was covered in bald patches. His form was—strange. A bit too long, too lanky. Like he’d been bigger, and just… deflated.

Yet. He looked, and sounded, like her former minion.

“Who are you?” She demanded.

The simian’s mouth quirked. “You already know the answer to that.” He waved a hand dismissively. “After all, it sounds as if you’ve become acquainted with my… clone.” He sneered. “I find it far more interesting to know who you are.”

So. The little wretch she’d been forced to endure was a clone. That would explain why so much of her master’s power had clung to him, where it hadn’t their enemies.

“My name is Valina,” she says, stiffly. “They call me the Skull Sorceress.” And oh, that was another thing that had been ripped from her, wasn’t it?

“So. Tell me, witch, what failure was it that landed you here? What scheme of yours did the Hyper Force send so thoroughly down into the toilet, hmm?”

Valina drew up her chin. “I did not fail. The boy and his monkeys did not ruin my plans.”

“Well, clearly you did something. Or you wouldn’t be here, now would you?”

Valina scowled. That was the kicker, wasn’t it? Obviously she had done something wrong. Had… had made a mistake somewhere. Was it her failure to eradicate the Hyper Force? She had thought that leaving them for the master would be a welcome back present—after all, they had always been off limits before.

“It’s none of your business, simian,” she snapped. “You have already been discarded by the master. He would not even blink, were I to vaporize you where you stand.”

Mandarin didn’t look impressed. “You mean, after being sent all the way out here, you’re still professing loyalty to him?”

Of course. Anything else would be… unthinkable. He was the master. He had raised her from the hell that was the Skeletal Circle, from their misguided beliefs and foolish plots. He had given her power. Trained her. Changed her. He had taken such an interest in her—had given her duties, responsibilities…

What else was she supposed to do? Where else could she go?

“His vision for this world—“

Mandarin cut her off. “Please. His vision is nothing more than a ruined husk of a planet, fed off of by his precious ‘Dark Ones.’”

“You served him once too,” Valina snapped.

“We shared a common enemy,” Mandarin said.

Mandarin's Voice

Something I noticed about Mandarin's voice is how compared to he rest of the hyperforce's voices, his sounds more elderly and kinda raspy.

Don't get me wrong, I love how he has the same VA as Po's dad Kung Fu Panda but I wonder if there's a certain reason

I wonder if he had a younger or deeper voice but due to being in stasis for 7 cycles so he probably didnt get to talk a lot. So when he's out, due to not using it for a while, it changed, sounding like he does now.

Ngl I kinda see him sound like Samurai Jack pre-stasis. What do u think? I'd love to know💖

i just posted my main mandarin Hot Take but uh.... idk i just. i really dont like the guy! i dont see the appeal of him, i think hes an incredibly interesting villain who i love to hate, but it seems most people just. love him, period. which is weird, considering hes clearly like.... highly manipulative and cruel. like hes not “misunderstood” hes genuinely just A Bad Guy which is part of what MAKES him such a good villain! idk i just dont get why everyone fixates on him so much

(I personally don’t ship it but... I do agree that in a Mandarin redemption arc Otto would be more accepting of mandarin than the others in the beginning.... OR MAYBE THE LEAST ACCEPTING!... MAYBE OTTO IS THE LAST TO WARM UP TO HIM BECAUSE IN THE END MANDARIN BETRAYED OTTO THE HARDEST!!!!!) I was gonna also add to this ask about how Otto could be Chiro’s view into mandarin’s better qualities but now I’m totally thinking this arc could be an opportunity to see Otto the coldest we’ve seen him...

OOOOOHHH i love both possibilities! having otto be cold and unaccepting would be SO ROUGH it effects literally everyone to see otto like that. it’s easy for everyone to assume otto will always be that source of optimism, but mandarin’s betrayal hurt him too!  he’d already gotten used to mandarin being evil and trying to kill them, so now that he’s back and having to switch back to friend mode?? it isn’t as easy as they think. he’s pretty sure that “nice” mandarin is gone forever, or at least was faked to use him back in the day. now i move on to this continuation:

My oldest OC (like, according to the time I made him) is Daecus! He’s like, my really old middle school Sonic OC, who’s an echidna. Like Silver, he has psychic powers.

My youngest OC, I think would be Nami, your favorite Chaotic Good goo girl!!

40. Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What do they wear? Who will they be with?

Hmmm, I think Daecus would just go out for a nice walk along the beach or in an elevated wooded area. He likes to go out by himself and just relax.

Nami would go to the theme park! It’s got all kinds of sweets, and of course she’d go with her family! ^^

41. What does your character do when they’re angry? Why?

Daecus isn’t the type to lose too much of his wits when he’s angry. If it’s someone he doesn’t need to fight, then he just walks off to calm down. He kind of talks to himself when he does.

Nami would definitely lash out at whoever’s making her angry. She doesn’t anger the way you think she would. You’d have to know how to push her buttons. Sometimes, she’s just irritable, and if you say something that gets on her nerves (provided you’re not her friend or part of her family), she’ll make you regret it, with a smile on her face. If it’s something abstract, like recurring failure, that’s making her angry, she’ll try to duke it out with something, usually in the training room or on a helpless inanimate object, sometimes to unhealthy measures.

42. Does your character have any scars? Where did they get them from? 

Not Daecus!

Nami has scarring over where her right eye used to be. Back when she was working for Skeleton King, she’d failed one too many times, so Mandarin beat her up and stabbed her eye as punishment. She really hates this physical aspect of herself, mostly because it reminds her of bad times. You’ll notice that there aren’t any mirrors in her room, and she likes it that way. Mirrors anger her.

43. What was the most offensive thing your character had ever said?

Hmmm, I never really developed a full story with Daecus… So I couldn’t say!

As Nameless, they’d have said things like, “Things like you deserve to be destroyed,” or, “Pathetic. If you were one of us, you’d be killed because of your uselessness.” You know, edgy henchman things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

44. How does your character react/ accept criticism?

Daecus often doesn’t believe criticism. He thinks he’s really good. Well, he is pretty good, but he thinks he’s above criticism.

Nami ignores criticism from strangers, unless it’s directed to make the srmt look bad. Then, she thinks about it. She’s more open with her fam, and she’ll do her best to make things right if she hears from them. In general, if she hears criticism that pokes at her insecurities, she’ll start shutting down and acting unlike her usual, bubbly self. (Like things alluding to her being an unnatural creation or her unable to be anything but evil because she was created by an evil being.)

45. If your character was given a slice of pineapple pizza and they HAD to eat it (or something bad would happen), how would they react? Do they even LIKE pineapple pizza? 

Daecus would like it. He wouldn’t mind eating the pineapple pizza to circumvent something bad.

Nami would like it, too. She would eat it regardless of whether it caused something bad to happen.

46. Your character is given a voodoo doll of themself. What do they do with it? Do they see if it actually works? 

Daecus would be wary of it and would want to stay 900 miles away. He don’t mess with that shit.

Nami would love it and thinks it’s cute. She doesn’t have a clue what a voodoo doll is. If the team told her, she’d be like, “Oh,” and then carry on. Probably keep the doll in a safe place. She’d first test it out by punching it in the stomach.

47. Can your character draw? What do they like to draw? Do they doodle?

I don’t think Daecus has any artistic talent, nor does he exercise it.

Nami loves to draw, but they’re on par with children’s drawings. Cuz, you know… she’s still a beeb. She likes crayons the most, but she hates how easily they break. She also likes abstract art because it doesn’t require any thought.

48. What were their parents like? How has that affected how they are as an adult? 

Daecus never really knew his parents. In effect, he’s become very independent but lonely, deep down inside.

Skeleton King could be considered a “parent” because he created her, but Nami would never think of him as family. SK abused her, making it hard for her to learn common morality outside of what SK taught her. At first, she exhibits fear of authority (the srmt), and she’s jumpy particularly when she sees one of the team angry or upset (not necessarily at her). She used to expect the worst treatment whenever she failed at something.

However, her adoptive dad, Otto, has given her almost nothing but good feelings. He knows just the way to cheer her up, and he provides her comfort for whenever she has a nightmare about her times with SK and Mandarin. Otto’s always optimistic, and he’s really silly. The only negative influence is that Nami would absolutely die for him if it meant saving him.

49. Does your character like candy? Do they get sugar rushes? What are they like when they get a rush? 

Daecus absolutely loves candy but hides the fact. He doesn’t get sugar rushes because he has self-control.

Nami also loves candy because it’s sweet! Due to her biology, she can hold a large amount of glucose, which she needs a lot of. She won’t experience a sugar rush unless she ate an exorbitant amount of candy (enough to get the concentration up in the entirety of her body volume). She’d be super hyper and hard to control and calm down.

50. If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count? 

Daecus would just embrace it, once he realized that all attempts were futile. He’d try to seclude himself so his friends wouldn’t see him so sad.

Though she doesn’t talk about it, Nami often believes that she’s on a timer, that death will come for her in the near future, if not in the present. She just lives with that fact, and she lives as if each day were her last. She always wants to make sure that the srmt knows she loves them, and she wants to spend time with them. To die alone would absolutely crush her.
