I read three books in July. It was rather difficult to read much when we were moving to a new continent, lol.
I read Parlez-Vouz Murder? Loved it. Loved the concept, enjoyed the execution of the concept. I cannot wait to find the other books in this series.
I read The Ship of Minos next. I enjoyed it, but it didn't grip me. I was not expecting the death. It was a good book with an interesting chase scene.
I read Who's Killing the Old (and mostly lovable) Mystery Writers? This one had a really interesting premise. I liked the main characters. The mystery writers were, predictably, all awful people. I had no idea who the murderer was until towards the very end.

#TuesdayBookBlog Lyrics for the Loved Ones by Anne Goodwin (@Annecdotist)
Hi all: I bring you another book by an author I discovered thanks to Rosie’s Book Review Team, and I was lucky enough to get an early copy and a request to provide an editorial review as well. It was my pleasure, as I’ve become very fond of the protagonist of this book and her story. (The book will be published on the 15th of May, but you can reserve it in advance). Lyrics for the Loved Ones by…

the dynamic of demigods thinking which other demigod is the most powerful is always amusing to me because. like, we know the big 3 kids are all the most powerful. That's just a fact of their universe. And then we know nearly every character views Percy as the strongest demigod, and most people are very rightfully intimidated by him.
and you look at the powers of the Big 3 kids and there's Percy, but then you realize Nico is just kind of objectively more powerful than him but simply chooses to hang out in Percy's shadow like he's Percy's scary dog privileges. Like, the two of them are pretty equally capable of causing multiple different apocalypses. Nico just also has like four different instakill powers and it's not like he doesn't use them. He very much uses them! Not infrequently, even! And they don't seem to take a significant amount of energy from him! And other demigods are pretty intimidated by both of them! But Nico makes a conscious point to keep his cards close to his chest and not let on exactly how dangerous and scary he can be if he wants to. People are already scared enough of him without knowing anything about him and he doesn't like that. Percy doesn't think about that nearly as much, and so usually just goes in guns blazing and that's part of why he's considered a wildcard. And then Nico himself puts Percy on a pedestal, so those who do know more about Nico's abilities then presume Nico knows something they don't about Percy that implies Percy is even stronger than him.
And even on a meta level Nico's narrative role requires him to be functionally more powerful than Percy, because he very often serves the purpose of getting Percy out of situations he can't handle on his own. That's just part of his function as a character! But also narratively he can't overshadow Percy so he just takes a backseat of his own accord and that's very amusing to me.
#pjo#percy jackson#riordanverse#nico di angelo#i will also note it is implied though we never see that Hazel has the exact same powers as Nico#and Hazel has trained with her powers way longer than Nico has plus is older so theoretically is more powerful already#she killed a giant all by herself. sank a small island. and successfully subdued Gaea for like another 60 years#so given that + her also having Nico's powers then *Hazel* is theoretically the strongest demigod no contest#Jason and Thalia end up kind of nerfed by the plot in that neither is allowed to overshadow Percy either#but they dont play the same roles that characters like Nico do - Nico keeps getting stupid abilities just for convenience factor#and Bianca never got the opportunity to use many powers besides astral projection/dream manipulation and similarly hades kid illusion stuff#and general ghost stuff. and she does all that as a ghost really. her killing the skeleton wasnt even her powers that was just a normal sta#and it was just by virtue of her being a hades kid and fulfilling the ''can kill these skeletons'' requirement that it blew up#technically she also showcases underworld immunity with the lethe stuff wearing off but that's very subtle#Hazel also doesnt play the same role as Nico and so doesnt get to showcase all that#plus is similarly nerfed with the ''cant be cooler than Percy'' constraint and so never gets to really do anything#even though logistically she is the most powerful and should showcase the full extent of her abilities to the same degree as Percy and Nico#Jason at least gets a little bit more wiggle room than Thalia being a main protagonist#Nico just gets the most wiggle room out of both not being a protagonist and being functionally a dues ex machina most of the time#versus Thalia or Bianca who are only ever secondary or supporting characters

Hi! I hope this is okay but I would love to hear more of ur thoughts about the Yunmeng siblings because they are important to me and your tummy hurt comic hasn't left my brain as just,,, such good immediate characterization! ^^ Thanks!
Tumblr media
I have too many thoughts on the Yunmeng siblings to fit into a succinct post, but I can offer you a Jiang Yanli addendum to the tummy hurt alignment.

do people who have listened to taz balance but not graduation Know that it was HEAVILY IMPLIED that lup and barry eventually adopted a lil sorcerer child who got disowned by his family for his natural necromancy magic, and they taught him how to use his powers for good and were overall great parents that he looks back on fondly
(and said child grew up to be a dimension-hopping lich, caretaker of the dead, and very sweet adoptive father of a major npc)

Granted I never finished my little pony or even got to cozy glow at all but I see people complain about how she "didnt deserve her fate" bc she was "literally a child" and I feel like its missing how the target audience are also children. Like a 9 year old isnt gonna see cozy glow as "a small baby child who was never given room to redeem herself, she shouldn't have been turned to stone like the other villains" they're gonna see her as "just like that mean girl in school who always picks on me and never gets in trouble for it because the teachers like her, I'm GLAD she got turned to stone! FUCK tiffany!"

I'm fascinated by little overlaps of character experiences in a timeline. In "Final Fantasy 7" as I vaguely remember it, Sephiroth is born in Shinra Manor in Nibelheim. The house has a secret basement laboratory, but people can't really spend months locked inside a house without losing it, so there must have been SOME interaction between the scientists in the manor and the people of the local village.
Like, they would have needed to get food somehow? And Shinra could be delivering all of their food by helicopter or something once a week, among other supplies, sure, but it's also possible that they might have had their food delivered through the village. Over the months or years that they were there, someone must have gone out drinking at the local pub or gone out to buy cigarettes at least once. There are different levels of lockdown that all seem feasible. It's possible that the situation was chill enough that Shinra employees might have semi-regularly gone out to eat dinner in town and simply not talked about what they were working on while out and about (Project S / the Jenova Project).
According to the wiki, Cloud is 21 during FF7, which means he was 17ish during the Nibelheim mission, I think? Some additional materials somewhere suggest that Cloud's Mom was only THIRTY-THREE (33) when she died, so I'm putting him at 17 because that means she would have been 16 when he was born. Which, depending on how old Sephiroth is exactly (wiki puts him at 25-30ish during FF7, which means he's probably 21-26ish during the Nibelheim mission), means that Claudia Strife would have been 7-12 years old in Nibelheim when Sephiroth was born.
It's perfectly possible that Claudia Strife at some point met Vincent Valentine, Hojo, or even a heavily pregnant Lucretia. She was supposedly a precocious girl with big dreams (before apparently becoming a teen mom), so she might have tried to hang around Shinra Manor at some point, and, idk, Vincent on his smoke break might have casually told her to fuck off for her own good. If the Project S people stayed in Shinra Manor for several years, it's very possible that one of the security guards or someone else there might be Cloud's father, who slept with a 15yo local and eventually left when he got sick of rural life. In which case, Claudia Strife might even have had the motivation to belatedly try to record who was at Shinra Manor and when, as part of an effort to find and contact her baby's deadbeat dad again.
(It's also possible that Cloud's Mom paid zero attention to any of the Shinra people back then and knows nothing about them, of course. Small towns are small, but also, sometimes you do the smart thing and just don't go poking around the mysterious corporate compound on the edge of town. That's just none of her business.)
Anyway, I think it's funny that Sephiroth is trying to figure out the secrets of his past, and they (Sephiroth, Zack, Cloud) could have potentially easily learned both Lucretia Crescent and Vincent Valentine's names if Zack had had one (1) conversation with Cloud's Mom. Claudia Strife was around back then as an adventurous young girl! She might honestly know a little something! Cloud, go home and talk to your mother!

There is a horror in that moment
The kind that makes most folks look away
That moment
When you realize
The Pain
Will not be stopping.
I'm writing a book in which
The main character goes through the same thing
And I'm stuck because
How do you write a scene like that?
Where do you put it in the story?
When does it finally dawn on him?
Not only the knowledge that
dancing
running
skipping
jumping
walking
fucking
working
adventuring
Living
will never be the same.
But when will it dawn on him that his last day of painlessness was months ago, and he didn't even know it at the time? (didn't even get to say goodbye)
Maybe that's why they say dawn breaks.
Maybe I'm stuck because I've never seen it anywhere else.
(maybe that's why I felt all alone in my mourning)
(maybe that's why I'm writing a book)
I've never seen a story where there were days of pain and days of ease, and then the days without pain got fewer and fewer until one day, it was just
Pain.
And of course my character, he waits
And waits
And waits
And works
And searches
And pleads
And yet the rest of his life
Suddenly stretches before him
Horrifically long, unthinkably long, with the knowledge that from now on,
Every Day Will Be A Pain Day.
Every second
Of every minute
Of every hour day week month year
For forever
For forever
For forever
For forever
For forever
For forever
For forever
How many scenes do I write
of him mourning?
And - before he finds the acceptance that even allows for mourning -
How many scenes of that horrific slow-sudden frantic-panicked suspicion of the truth?
How does one draw (it's a graphic novel) the face of a man (his name is David)
struck with that kind of strangling grief?that choking half-denial?
That silent scream of horror given sound?
How many people tell him they are sure it will be fine even as he feels himself falling further?
How many of them fail to understand until they are gone from his life?
How many times does he blame himself?
How many times is he right?
Don't get me wrong
It's a hopeful story
Really.
It has a happy ending
And that happy ending happens
On a pain day.
I just hope I can tell my story good enough to show
What that means and
Why it matters.
I just hope we can be seen.

I kinda find it interesting that up until now all Dragon Age protagonists, as well as most companions for whom being of a particular age (usually older that the rest) was not a part of their characterization, were essentially all the same age - that is, a part of the same generation.
It's been noted that Inquisition's cast is generally older that that of Origins and 2, but we do also meet them about ten years later, which squares quite nicely - the cast of the games set in 9:30 starts out in their varying 20s, while the cast of the game set in 9:40 is in their 30s and up.
But the Veilguard crew seems to be another matter - by 9:50 you are either squarely in your 40s and 50s (which most of the companions and, by extension, Rook, don't really seem to be) or were born significantly later than previously mentioned characters.
I think that when I started writing this down I was leading up to some kind of joke about millennials and gen z, but now I am just thinking how fascinating it is that the narrative of the franchise has gone on long enough for there to be characters who probably grew up among the consequences of the earlier games' events, the ones for whom the world-changing events of the Age of the Dragon are the norm, if not already history. How cool is that! I really hope the writers of Veilguard found it as compelling an idea as I do and it gets explored a bit in the game.

Legacy
Heroes exist.
Yes, heroes exist. But they're, y'know, special. Different. Chosen, maybe. They live in a whole other world than you. They've got these grand destinies you can only imagine. You? You work your nine-to-five and then go home and blow another six hours on whatever before turning in for the night and doing it all again. And it's good enough.
And then there's a disaster and you find yourself in a remote corner of the battlefield cut off from everyone else. And one of those heroes staggers out of the dust and the smoke and the rubble, and it doesn't take a doctor to tell they're on their last legs. And then the mask comes off, and it's a kid.
A kid who's way to young to be doing this and has been going up against odds way too big for them for who knows how long and the other shoe finally dropped. And they're a kid and they're dying and you've already called 911 but you already know, you can just tell, they aren't going to make it in time. There's nothing you can do to save them.
But God help you if you're going to let this kid die alone.
So you make them comfortable, as comfortable as you can. You keep them talking, keep them focused on something, anything other than the dust and the smoke and the rubble. And you hold their hand tight and they don't hold your hand anywhere near tight enough for someone with superhuman strength and it breaks your heart, but you don't let it show. You can't. You don't. cry.
They don't either. They don't rant or scream or rage about how unfair it all is, though they've every right to. (You wonder, as you often will afterwards, who did the choosing. Who exactly you should blame for handing this destiny, this responsibility, this fate, to a child). They tell you about the date they were going to ask to prom next week. They... they ask you to find their parents, once the news plasters their face everywhere. To tell them sorry.
And then they're gone. The light goes out of their eyes. And light, real light this time, real power, flows into you, through your hand that's still holding onto theirs. And there, in the dust and the smoke and the rubble and the tears, you make a promise. To them. To yourself.
You will be a hero. You will carry this weight.
Because for as long as you do, maybe one more kid won't have to.
