War & Peace Leftovers
Based on this ask from @icecoffee90, she wanted a fic about Jackie & Bryce arguing over "eating all their food" and the roomies discussing "all the people they bring into their shared space."
Book: Open Heart (Book 2)
Characters: Jackie Varma, Bryce Lahela, F!MC (Casey), Elijah Greene, Aurora Emery, Sienna Trinh, Tobias Carrick (mentioned)
Rating: Teen
Words: 1,275
Summary: Jackie is looking forward to her first day off of work in longer than she can remember when Bryce unintentionally messes things up. After a meltdown, new rules are created.
A/N: I haven't written a "roomies chaos" fic in some time, and it was so much fun to do one again. I hope you enjoy it! Participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge 's August challenge by doing a throwback to the January challenge with the prompt "Friends."
OH Masterlist | My Full Masterlist
The life of a medical resident isn’t an easy one. But with a bit of creativity, there are ways to muddle through. One of the highlights? The rare, precious, and cherished day off, and today, Jackie Varma finally had one of those days. She hit snooze on her alarm clock five times... just because she could. She was about to hit it a sixth time just for fun when her eyes popped open.
There was a very good reason to finally drag herself out of bed at noon: the delicious leftovers she had brought home last night. The hospital had hosted a luncheon and told everyone to take leftovers home. You don’t have to say that to a broke resident twice, especially when penne gorgonzola from Carmelina’s was among the offerings. The delicious delicacy definitely beat the instant ramen noodles she normally had for lunch. But that’s OK, she thought with a smile. Today, she had her leftovers.
She thought about getting dressed, but this was her day off. One of the highlights of this high holy day was sitting around in pajamas. Her roommates understood and had seen her in worse, so she wrapped her hair in a messy bun, slipped her feet into her fuzzy slippers, and off to the kitchen she went. She heard people conversing, and as nice as it would have been to have the place alone for a bit, she was used to living with four roommates, so she didn’t let it dampen her mood. Besides, she was about to have penne gorgonzola. If memory served, it tasted even better heated up the next day. She knew she was excited because she swore she could almost smell it, then she stepped into the kitchen and...
“Hey, Jackie!” Bryce flashed her his signature grin just before sticking his fork in the last piece of her precious penne. This was a declaration of war.
“Wha... what... WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” She screamed so ferociously Elijah, Sienna, and Casey came running from their rooms. “What the HELL are you doing!?”
Bryce had no idea how a simple greeting could have escalated so quickly.
“Nothing!” He defended, eyes wide. “What’s wrong?”
Jackie was already at his side, not-so-playfully hitting her now-sworn enemy.
“YOU ATE MY FOOD! Do you have any idea how much I was looking forward to that?”
“Oh, I’m sor...”
“SAVE IT! That was penne gorgonzola from Carmelina’s!”
“I know,” Bryce replied sheepishly. “And it was delicious.”
Casey silently gave Bryce the “cut-it” signal, mouthing, “Not helping!”
“YOU DON’T EVEN LIVE HERE!” Jackie hollered. She turned to her roommates. “Why is he here! Who brought him here?” But before anyone could answer, she directed her ire back to Bryce. “WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS HERE?”
“OK, Jackie... simmer down,” Casey pleaded. “I know you’re pissed, but Bryce is our friend, and....”
“He was my friend,” Jackie snapped. “Past tense. Who comes into an apartment THAT IS NOT HIS and eats someone’s leftovers!”
“Jackie,” Sienna said nervously. “This isn’t entirely Bryce’s fault. He asked if he could have my leftovers, which were also in the fridge, and I said yes. I’m really sorry.”
“OK, so what are your leftovers? I’ll eat them.”
“Uh... a cheeseburger from McDonald’s...”
Jackie slumped into a chair with a sigh of frustration. Her head fell into her hands, and, to everyone’s shock, she began crying.
Elijah shook his head at Bryce. “Oh my God, you broke her!”
“OK! I’m really sorry, Jackie, but if we’re being fair, you ate the rest of my sea-salt caramel ice cream.”
“That was in OUR freezer! Why are you keeping your ice cream in OUR freezer!”
“Because he practically lives here,” Aurora yawned as she entered the kitchen. “What’s going on? You woke me up.”
“I’m glad you’re here, Aurora,” Jackie replied, ignoring her question. “Because we need to set new rules in this place.”
“Jackie,” Bryce said sympathetically, “I’ll go on Uber Eats and order you another penne gorgonzola right now...”
“Forget it!” she said, holding up her hand. “Bryce. I tolerate you and all, but why are you always here? You have your own apartment. I’d KILL for my own apartment. But no, I have to put up with these four, and you’re here so much you make it five. And Elijah...”
“What did I do?” Elijah asked nervously.
“Why is Baz here all the damn time playing video games... in the living room... next to where I am trying to sleep!”
“We can get headsets...”
“But why is he always here!?”
“Jackie,” Sienna jumped in. “It’s not bad for us to have our friends over.”
“No, it’s not,” Casey agreed. “But Jackie does have a point.”
“Says you!” Jackie barked.
“What do you mean?” Casey gasped.
“Do you think I need to see Tobias stumbling out of your room shirtless when I get up to pee at two a.m.!”
“What?” Aurora’s eyes lit up. “Two a.m. is when that happens? Damn... I’ll have to set the alarm.”
“That’s my boyfriend, Aurora,” Casey teased.
“Oh, I don’t want him in the least! He’s all yours. But hey, eyecandy is eyecandy.”
“So,” Bryce asked, “if I take off my shirt more often when I come over, can I stay on the drop-in anytime list?”
“Yes!” Aurora said as all the others yelled, “No!”
Jackie turned to her with a look of disgust. “When the hell did you become Miss Thirsty?”
“Ahh...” she shrugged. “I haven’t had a date in a while.”
“Guys,” Casey attempted to get everyone’s attention. “Can we go back to before my boyfriend was sexually objectified...”
“Guilty!” Aurora grinned.
“I was going to say, maybe we should have more rules about other people coming over. No offense, Bryce.”
“Offence taken,” he nodded.
“I suppose it wouldn’t be the worst thing to have nights where we say no guests,” Sienna agreed.
“Quiet nights.” Aurora enthused. “That’s what we need, just nights where we know we can unwind a bit.”
“Since our schedules are so erratic, we can do them a month in advance...” Sienna offered.
“I think it’s a good idea,” Elijah agreed. “Why don’t we have roomies meeting this weekend. That doesn’t include you, Bryce.”
Bryce grasped his chest in mock horror. “I’m hurt!”
“Or we could divide the rent by six, then you can come and go as you please,” Aurora smirked.
“Ehh, I can see you all at Donahue’s,” he smiled. “Jackie, I am really sorry about your leftovers. But you know, if you ever want a little more privacy, you can use my apartment. I’m almost never there.”
“We know,” they all said in unison.
“That’s so nice of you!” Elijah smiled.
“I was only offering it to Jackie,” Bryce winked.
“Bryce, I’m sorry for having a meltdown on you. It’s just....”
“... just that you’ve slept ten hours in the past week, and you don’t always have much to look forward to, and I ... inadvertently ... took one of those rare treats away today.”
“Yeah,” Jackie smiled. “That.”
“I get it,” Bryce grinned. “You know, people always see my brilliance and this body, but they never see that I’m empathetic, too.”
“And humble,” Casey said, bumping his shoulder. “Don’t forget, humble.”
Just then, the doorbell rang. “Oh, no!” Casey said. “Who is dropping in now.”
“That would be the delivery man,” Bryce smiled. “While you guys were having your roommate's legislation session, I ordered Carmelina’s for all of us.”
“You did!” Elijah grinned. “Hell, I say we have a rule that Bryce still gets to come over whenever he wants!”
“If he’s bringing food,” Jackie smiled. “Thank you, Bryce.”
“Don’t mention it... roomie.”

We know that Lucifer is canonically the only character that's said the F word in Obey Me!. Nobody else has outright sworn. (I know the others say stuff that gets censored and it's primarily for legal/content reasons but hear me out.)
We also know Lucifer has cast curses during events so that nobody remembers what he (and his brothers in multiple instances) looks like shirtless/naked or as a dame.
Is it possible that at some point Lucifer cursed MC to be a pure cinnamon roll, unable to hear the other characters' constant swearing? Cursed to only converse like life is a PG13 movie while everyone is actually incredibly vulgar.
#maybe it's a punishment for bad grades/behavior. maybe it's just for fun.#can you imagine Diavolo and Mephisto just casually swearing like sailors all the time. and MC has no idea.#MC and Luke sharing the same curse#barbatos doesn't actually say “oh my.” it's more like “young master what the f-”#obey me#obey me!#obey me scenarios#obey me headcanon#obey me x mc#omswd#obey me lucifer#obey me headcanons#obey me mc

Throwback Fic #2
Day One (1/6)
Series Premise: What happened when Cassie met Sienna? Small moments that defined their friendship.
Book: Open Heart Characters: Cassie Valentine (F!MC), Sienna Trinh Rating/Category: Teen. Fluff. Words: 1,325
A/N: I had this idea for a mini series to explore Cassie and Sienna's friendship over the years, and how it changes when they become family. It might just be 3-4 parts. Haven't decided yet. Submitting to @aprilchallenge prompt "laughter" and to @choicesficwriterscreations You Go Girls event.
Cassie Valentine wanted the ground to swallow her up. Her first day as an internal medicine resident and probably her last. She almost killed her first patient. Thankfully, Jackie Varma heard her panicked call and jumped in to help Cassie’s incompetent self.
But feeling inept wasn’t even the worst part. No, that was reserved for the dressing down she received from her medical hero, Dr. Ethan Ramsey.
Every day had a silver lining. For Cassie, it was meeting Sienna Trinh, a fellow dolphin in a sea of sharks. The other intern interrupted Dr. Ramsey mid-tirade, bearding the lion in his den and giving Cassie a reprieve.
She hadn’t seen Sienna since but looked forward to remedying that during drinks at Donahue’s. It was finally the end of shift, and Cassie was mentally exhausted after her last interaction with Dr. Ramsey. The man infuriated her with his arrogant attitude.
“Don’t bother. I already have,” he said, handing her a printed-out prescription order for Annie’s antihistamines.
He hadn't even been apologetic when she expressed disbelief at his actions. Simply making it clear that he’d expected her to blow it.
Cassie supposed someone that brilliant could get away with doing whatever they pleased. One day, she would be a world-famous diagnostician, and then she’d take pleasure in showing Dr. Ramsey how wrong he’d been about her.
Still thinking about their run-in, Cassie absently changed into jean shorts and a green tie front crop top. She’d hesitated this morning, uncertain about her after-work plans, before stuffing the backup outfit into her bag at the last minute. Now she was glad for the option to let loose and look fabulous doing it!
Sienna wolf-whistled when Cassie returned to the atrium. “I hope you’re single because you are going to clean up tonight!”
Cassie smiled, letting the compliment smooth away her rough emotions after a brutal day.
“Can I pay you to follow me around and compliment me?”
“For a job that easy, I’ll do it for free,” Sienna grinned.
Cassie chuckled, feeling her doubts and bad mood dissipate entirely in the face of Sienna’s cheery optimism.
Jackie and Bryce led the way out of the atrium and down the street to Donahue’s. Cassie and Sienna fell back, walking side by side with their heads together, getting to know each other.
“How was your first day?” Cassie asked.
“Good! I still can’t believe I’m a doctor,” said Sienna. “At one point, I ducked into a supply closet just so I could stare at my ID badge without anyone looking.”
“I hid in a supply closet, too, for less fun reasons,” Cassie mused.
Sienna’s looked at her in sympathy. “I’m sorry, Cassie. Was it because of Dr. Ramsey or your patient?”
“Both, I guess. I just had a different vision of my first day as a doctor.” Cassie mentally shook her head to rid herself of the negativity creeping in. “But I know what you mean, Sienna. The first time my patient called me Dr. Valentine, I wanted to stand there and bask.”
“We’re doctors!” Sienna said excitedly, clapping her hands together.
“Baby doctors,” Cassie qualified, considering their intern status at the bottom of the medical hierarchy.
Sienna waved that way with a twist of her lips. “Patients don’t care about that. They’re at their lowest point and just want someone to listen, to help. This old lady I treated today….”
As Sienna talked about her patient, Cassie reflected on how Dr. Ramsey had said something similar outside Annie’s room.
“…maybe the most important trait a doctor can have. You listened. You took the time to get to know your patient. Their story, their hopes, their fears….”
As they stepped inside Donahue’s, Cassie’s eyes adjusted to the dim and dingy interior and her ears to loud music competing with the din of voices.
She envied the way Sienna charged confidently through groups of doctors and nurses, leading them to where the other interns had commandeered a booth. Her new friend was no pushover, as Cassie soon discovered when a frat boy type almost mowed them down near the bar.
Cassie didn’t see Sienna again until later in the night. She slid into the booth across from her friend, who furiously tapped on her phone. It was the first time she’d seen Sienna look less than serene.
“I’m already past my drink limit, but these cocktails are so good!” Cassie exclaimed, taking a sip of her fruity concoction. When Sienna continued to stare at her phone, Cassie nudged her knee under the table. “Everything okay?”
“Yes,” Sienna said, almost by rote, putting her phone face up on the table.
She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. She glanced down briefly when her phone pinged twice but ignored it, finishing her colorful drink instead.
“What’s wrong, Sienna?” Cassie asked when a flurry of texts lit up Sienna’s phone, each making her frown. “I’m a good listener if you want to talk. I promise it will stay between us.”
Sienna sighed. “I have a boyfriend, Wayne. He lives across town, and I’m staying with him.” She stopped, and Cassie could see her gathering herself before continuing. “I don’t know the neighborhood well yet, and it’ll be late by the time I get home. I hoped he’d meet me at the T station, but he said he’ll be asleep.”
“That sucks,” Cassie said. “I could have sworn you were from around here. You just look so confident, like you know where everything is, where to go and what to do.”
Sienna giggled. “That’s so sweet of you. Wayne moved here a couple of years ago, so I visited for a weekend here and there during med school. But it’s my first time living here. What about you?”
“My grandparents live in Newport, Rhode Island. My brother and I often dropped by before or after a family visit. We did the Freedom Trail and other touristy stuff. But I suppose living somewhere, day to day, is a different experience.”
“It’s a much slower pace than New York,” Sienna commented, leaning in to be heard as someone turned up the jukebox volume. “That’ll take some getting used to.”
“Is that where you’re from?” Cassie said, curious because Sienna didn’t have the vibe she often associated with New Yorkers.
“New Orleans, or rather just east of that,” Sienna said. She pronounced it New Or-lins, a faint accent coming through. “I’ve lived in the north since college, though, first Princeton, then Columbia. So my accent is almost gone. Unless I go home, and then it’s like I never left.”
Cassie cackled as Sienna exaggerated her accent with the last sentence, long, liquid vowels and softened consonants with a laid-back rhythm.
She lifted her glass. “How about a toast?”
Sienna raised her glass eagerly, pouting when she saw it was empty. “Aww. I’m out.”
“Easily remedied,” Cassie said, pouring half of her drink into Sienna’s glass and making her friend laugh.
“You’re officially my day-one person!” Sienna said, raising her voice and slightly tipsy as she tried to clink Cassie’s glass only to miss.
Cassie changed directions, angling her glass to tap it against Sienna’s. “To two dolphins kicking butt in a sea of sharks!”
“Dolphin Power!”
They tittered as nearby heads turned at their bizarre toast. But Cassie and Sienna didn’t care, throwing back their drink and doubling over in laughter as they slammed the empty glasses on the table.
Much later, Cassie leaned her tired head against the window of the T train, not really paying attention to the tunnel lights rushing past outside. Her mind was on Sienna’s idea that the five of them look for a place together. She wouldn’t mind living with Sienna but wasn’t sure about the others yet.
Cassie had a feeling she found her Day One person in this city that would be her home for the next three years. And maybe a friend for life. They were just getting started.

thank you @asallowgrave for beta reading! Go check out his works!!
a/n: ER - first days dating. Also, I'd call this chapter a last breath you take before chapter 3 takes it away. So, hope you'll enjoy 🥰 lil excerpts under the cut:
・・・ “Can you try, if I’ve got this one right, please?” Ominis handed her a piece of parchment. She placed the fingertip onto the rune that had been encircled multiple times and shut her eyes, concentrating on the feelings beneath her touch.
With enough focus and while directing all her attention to the rune under her finger, she could first feel a feather's soft, smooth parts, which, after a gentle pulse, morphed into the sensation of a thin, metal needle. She could even gently slide her finger over it and feel the needle's point, sensing just how sharp it might be.
“Feels really accurate,” Alyn said as she opened her eyes, nearly losing the sensation from the rune as her focus drifted. “That’s amazing.”
It was just that moment when Alyn noticed the marks on his hand, and her gaze shifted briefly to the tiny dark spots on the parchment that she hadn't paid attention to earlier. “Your hands…” she said softly. ・・・
・・・ Ominis didn’t speak for quite a while. Alyn kept a close eye on his frowning face and the way his hands clenched around the wand. The silence allowed her to hear how he let out a slow sigh after a few short breaths when he chose not to speak.
“Fuck,” he said tiredly at last, making Alyn blink in surprise. ・・・
#this chapter is kinda a smooth finish to the first#sorry don't feel like tagging today#my anxiety is driving me up the walls today#still decided to post oh i love these mindgames with myself#i'll tag you my lovely readers on the next chapter tho#i'm okay you don't need to comment this#telling just so you know you're not the problem#hogwarts legacy#snowcactus ssl#hogwarts legacy fanfiction#hogwarts legacy fanfic#ao3 fanfic#ominis gaunt x f!mc#ominis gaunt x f!mc fanfiction

OMFG I am SCREAMING. lmao
This was way, way, way too much fun. @secretaryunpaid get your ass in here! LMAO.
OK first... IDK why, but that second shot there, with Tobias looking down at the camera...🥵🥵🥵 He's not the only one needing a shower.
The way he casually said, "Harmonie, you're naked." 😂😂😂 STOP
PARTIALLY naked if I remember correctly.
sdfjadkfjdskflddkk!! OK I'm broken. lmao
Worrying about the neighbors? What kind of priorities?
Did I mention I fucking LOVE these two?
I'm flattered...
I'm DEAD. DEAD. 💀💀💀💀
And the SHOWER! And Ethan's COMMENT
DEAD. I am DEAD!!!!
I know in many universes, creators would not depict Ethan as remotely OK with this, and the fact that you DO is so freaking refreshing and fun. I LOVE the dynamic between all of them.
I'm officially saying throuple, raise the kids together... I'm here for it. lol
OH, I had such a rough day, and this just cheered me up - you rock!

A few weeks ago…
Luna
The phone rang somewhere in the house while I was in the middle of an art project.
A few seconds later I heard footsteps and when I turned around I saw Bryce appear in the doorway, handing me my phone.
”Who is it?“ I asked and turned to my canvas again.
”No idea some fancy talking guy said he wanted to talk to you.“
”Is he sure he got the right person?“ ”Beats me.“
I furrowed my brow and pushed my dark blonde hair out of my face and accidentally got some teal paint in my hair. Good thing it’ll wash out.
”Hello?“ I wiped my paint covered fingers on a cloth I kept handy when I painted.
”Am I speaking to Ms. Luna Auclair?“ A deep voice with a slight accent can be heard from the other end.
”Yes. And who is this?“ I put the phone on speaker and got up slowly as I took my brushes to the sink to wash them.
”My name is Bertrand Beaumont from House Beaumont in Cordonia. I’m sure you’ve heard of me.“
”Hmm. Sorry doesn’t ring a bell.“ I say not able to resist teasing him. Bryce snickered next to me.
”You’re so mean.“ He mouthed, and I kissed his stubbled cheek, making him smile.
I turned back to the conversation, putting Bertrand out of his misery. Poor guy must’ve thought the worst of me.
”I’m just kidding Mr. Beaumont I know who you are. So what can I do for you?“ I turned off the faucet and put my paint brushes upside down so they could dry.
”I could use your help.“ He sounded hesitant, which made me instantly curious.
”Help with what?“
”We have our PR firm that we founded, and we’re trying to give some people a better public image.“ I took my phone into my hand.
”What does that have to do with me? I’m not a PR person. I have a bachelor's degree in fine arts, and I’m currently teaching art at the University of Hawaii.“
I took a look at my half-finished painting sitting on the easel, and decided to let the painting dry for now. I’ll keep working on it later.
When I closed the door Bryce and I walked towards the backyard, where we sat down in our beach chairs, while Bertrand’s voice kept coming out of the speaker.
”I’m very well aware. But I know you’re someone who’s skilled as an artist. And I know you think outside the box, and that’s exactly what we need.“
”I will need more information than that if you want my help.“ I could hear some commotion before another voice replaced Bertrand's.
”Luna right? Hi I’m Maxwell, Bertrand’s brother. Look, my brother's social skills suck sometimes. I have the cliff notes version if you want it?“
”Um…sure fire away.“
”Alright. A few weeks ago there was a bit of an…let’s call it an incident. Tobias Carrick was caught making out with the daughter of one of the hospital directors of Mass Kenmore. Someone apparently posted it online. Of course, it’s gone viral. The damage is done and he could get fired. Because apparently it’s unethical.“
”Poor Tobias. He’s a good friend of me and my fiancé Bryce so he has our sympathies especially since this a massive violation of their privacy to put the video online. I’m really sorry he’s going through that.“
I looked at Bryce who was as surprised as me to hear about this.
”Both Bertrand and I feel terrible, because Tobias seems like such a great guy and then for someone to swoop in and destroy his image like that. This is actually where you come into play. Let’s just say we’ve tried other people to fix his image, but it didn’t work.“
”Like I told your brother, I’m not a PR person. I have zero experience.“
”That’s not what we’re looking for. I’m talking about your other accolades. You’re not only one of the youngest people to finish your bachelor degree, but one where all your professors had only glowing compliments for you. You also published your own book, called Kala Kala - Overcoming anxiety with the help of art. Very nice read. I loved it, it’s also super colorful by the way. Not only do you teach art at the senior center, you’re an active member at arts on the fence, a non-profit organization in Honolulu, Hawaii. You love malasdas and are allergic to ginger. Should I continue? I’ve got more.“
”I…no…that’s fine. But how did you find out that much about me? Not everything is available online.“ I was wondering how the hell they got my phone number, and all the things in my bio Maxwell just mentioned. Why would they even be interested in seeking out my help?
”Let’s say a mutual, redhead found out about it. She bought some of your art, and she said you could be a good fit. I think the phrase »ovaries of steel« was mentioned.“
I gasped in awe.
”You don’t mean Olivia Nevrakis do you? Because then I’m so in. I’d love to meet her. And of course help out in any way I can.“
I heard a whoop and a sigh.
”Is that a yes?“ Maxwell asked unsure.
”Hold on a sec.“ I muted the conversation.
”What do you think B?“ I asked Bryce and I could see his beautiful face, that I could sketch every single day and not get tired of looking at.
”I mean I’m sorry Tobias is going through this. He’s our friend, but are you sure you’re up for it?“ His brown eyes were filled with worry as he gently caressed my stomach.
”I’ll be fine. Women have gotten pregnant before and have worked until they’ve given birth.“ I said with more conviction than I felt right now.
”I know you’re trying to be strong but okay. If you’re really sure, then I’m okay with it, but the smallest hitch, and we’re going back home. And don’t think of going alone. I don’t care who they are. You’re my fiancé and the mother of my kids. So they better believe I’ll be going with you.“
”I love your protective mode.“
”Out of all the things I’ve said, that’s what you focused on?“
I grinned and then I unmuted the conversation.
”Maxwell? I’m in.“
”Thanks Luna. I promise you won’t regret it.“
”I better don’t. Otherwise, you’ll hear me yell at you.“
Maxwell chuckled.
”You got it. There’ll be a private jet to pick you up. I’ll send you the arrival date. Can’t wait to meet you. From the pictures I’ve seen, you're really beautiful.“
”Careful there Casanova.“ Bryce chimed in, and I grinned as I pushed my hand through his soft brown hair, making him relax.
”No worries, I know she’s taken. We’ll see you soon in Cordonia, bye.“
Before I could say anything else the phone call ended. Bryce and I just stared at the phone and then laughed at how surreal the situation was.
Who would’ve thought I’d meet members of House Beaumont?
Though it looked as if a new adventure was coming our way.
5 days later
So here I was on day five not making any kind of improvement whatsoever.
I’ve tried talking to Tobias, but nothing worked to get through to him.
He acted as if nothing was wrong and there’s no part where he could lose his job. He’s been painted as the bad guy but doesn’t seem to care.
I got up this morning, let Bryce sleep in a little, as I went down to the pool to figure out a new strategy for how to fix this mess.
That’s when I saw Tobias flirting with a woman by the pool.
You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m trying to repair his image, and he’s out here flirting? Oh, hell no!
”Having fun?“ I asked when I stood next to him. Tobias turned his light green eyes to me, focusing on me rather than the woman he was just talking to a minute ago.
As if he wasn’t already good-looking enough, the smile he threw my way made his face even more beautiful.
”Good morning to you too, gorgeous.“
”Sorry buddy but that charm is wasted on me. I’m engaged and I’m expecting.“
”Does that mean I can’t flirt with you?“ Tobias smirked.
”You can. But it won’t have any effect.“ I said and took a towel from the rack and threw it at him.
”Get dressed.“ I said, and he took the towel, but didn't move. He threw an apologetic smile at the woman who was sitting next to him. She slipped him a small piece of paper and left. He watched her walk away and nodded his head in appreciation.
I cleared my throat, and he turned his gaze on me.
”Let me guess you have another glorious idea how to restore my image?“
”You can call it that. You have 10 minutes to get dressed and be back.“
”Let’s make it 15 alright?“ Tobias laughed.
”Now it’s 10 minutes.“
”Does that tone ever work on Bryce?“
”I’m not going to repeat myself.“
”Now you sound like a school teacher.“ He replied but got up. That’s progress I guess.
”Look, I was assigned to give you some sort of glowing makeover for your reputation. If you don’t want it? Fine. I have better things to do.“
Tobias stared back at me, his charm gone.
”Like what? Be all sunshiny? No offense, but don’t you ever have a bad day or get angry? In all the time you’ve been here you’re always smiling and never losing your cool. You’re more like a robot.“
His comment hit me more than I thought it would, so I got up in his face. Which is hard since he’s taller than me, but I made it work.
”Don’t mistake my bubbly personality for being just that. There’s a lot more to my character and my personality than being happy and positive. You don’t know me that well if your words are any indication.“
His eyes widened for a fraction.
”My bad.“
”And that was lesson number 12.“
Tobias rolled his eyes.
”What I don’t get is why they even assigned you to me? We’re polar opposites.“
”You know what’s interesting? In our whole convos, you’ve avoided talking about this whole incident that led up to this moment right now. You keep acting as if you don’t care, and it’s no concern of yours. But you avoid talking about the core problem.“
Tobias crossed his arm.
”Please enlighten me.“
”You’re not a bad guy. But you’d rather have people believe you’re a dick then let them think you have a heart. That’s interesting.“
”Are you done psychoanalyzing me?“ His voice sounded more and more irritated.
”If you think that we’re done? Then you don’t know me at all. We’re just getting started. Get dressed. And don’t be late. If you’re not down in 5 minutes I’m leaving. So dealers choice.“
”Fine, I'll go get dressed. Doesn’t mean this conversation is over.“
”Now it’s 9 minutes.“ I said and watched him quicken his steps while I sat down and enjoyed the nice view of the ocean.
10 minutes later…
”What is this place?“ He asked without really seeming to pay attention.
”It’s called a room. With walls and windows. And sometimes there’s even a door.“
He snickered.
”I know what a room is. I meant what are we doing in this room?“ He looked at all the cans of paint I had people assemble for this exercise.
”That’s the fun part. Team building exercise. It’s also pregnancy safe, which is a plus.“ I grinned, but he just looked at me and didn't reply.
”The point of this exercise is to let go of past hurts. Look at it this way, you can just let all your anger out. I like to call it angry painting.“
I take a can of paint, open it and see the color coral crush. I took it and threw some at the wall.
Tobias regarded me and I handed him another can, he took but stared at it as if it’s been touched by Medusa herself.
”Do you even know how to get angry?“ He looked at me skeptically as he kept holding the pint can in his hands.
”Excuse me?“
He opened the can of paint and a soft canary yellow joined the coral crush tone on the wall.
”Look, all you’ve said is how I have a heart and I don’t let others see it. But you don’t even know me. How do you expect me to trust you?“
”Is this finally the heart-to-heart you’re giving me? One that the others failed to get?“
”Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to partner up.“ He set the can down and was about to walk away.
”Giving up so soon? That’s a shame.“
”What?“ He stopped and slowly turned my way.
”I know you’re the type of guy who likes to do things rather than sit around and talk.“
”You’ve been paying attention? I’m shocked. Everybody knows I’m competitive, that's not a secret.“
”Of course I’ve been paying attention. You know I have bad days and angry moments too. I’m not just some blonde bimbo, who can’t count to three. I notice a lot more than people think.“
”Such as?“ He raised his eyebrows daringly as he leaned against the door frame.
”When you get nervous you bite your lip and clench your left fist. Which would lead me to believe you are left-handed.“
I kept going.
”Whenever I ask you a personal question or try to tackle the issue, you laugh it off, meaning you’re not ready to talk to me or improve your image. You think it’s fine and it doesn't need any polishing. If people don’t like you or think you’re a dick that’s on them.“
Tobias doesn’t say anything.
”I’d wager you’re someone who likes to do things his way or the highway. You don’t play well with others because you like to be in control. It’s hard for you to give anyone even an ounce of your trust because you believe trust is earned. You said it yourself I don’t know much about you, so why should you trust me? So did I get any of that right?“
Tobias didn’t say anything. He didn’t even move a muscle.
”Your silence indicates I got something right.“
”Even if you did get it right, it doesn’t mean I need your help.“
”So what you’d let your image get destroyed and let others decide on the narrative rather than trying to fix it? That doesn’t sound like the Tobias I got to know.“
”I can’t control what people think.“
”Maybe not. But you can let them see that there’s more to you. Do you know what I see right now?“
”What?“
”Someone who’s been hurt in the past, and now you’re hurt again. But you’re trying so hard to bury those feelings that you’re drowning in them.“
”Sounds like a therapy session.“ He mumbled.
”Art is therapy. Did you know I basically got bullied out of the art gallery I worked at in Boston?“
He shook his head. By the look in his eyes I could tell I got his attention.
”I had no idea, but I’m sorry to hear that. Why did you get fired?“
”I quit. I’ve been struggling with anxiety for years. And they’ve seen me as someone they can demean and push around. My voice was snuffed out. I’ve always seen art as freedom, choosing to make art work for you. Art has helped me find an outlet, find my voice. Let me be creative and put paint on a canvas when I can’t name my own feelings.“
He rubbed his neck as if uncomfortable by my word vomit.
”I had no idea. And I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be a dick. I just…“
”You needed to vent so you let it out on me. I get it. We all lash out when we’re angry. Usually at the people we’re close to.“
”But you seem so calm and composed. You and Bryce never even fight. You’re so perfect.“
I threw my head back and let out a laugh. Making it echo from the walls.
I turned back to Tobias who was looking at me as if I grew another head.
”Do you really believe that? Of course Bryce and I fight. We have disagreements all the time. But we’ve learned how to handle them. Even if we don’t speak to each other for days, it doesn't mean we hate each other. But it means hey I need space I’ll talk when I’ve cooled off. We found our rhythm. We love and understand each other.“
He sighed and sat down, leaning on the wall that was just covered with paint, he winced when he realized it, but he didn’t sit down somewhere else.
”What a mess I’ve created, but maybe you’re right.“
”I must have a fever, or did you just say I’m right?“ I grinned and he smiled back.
”No you heard me correctly. You’re right. I’m scared to end up alone. So that’s why I pushed Chloe away. The woman from the video. We’ve gotten pretty close, and I don't know I panicked. I mean whoever took the video had no right to do that, but I guess people judge me and say how I’m sleeping with her because I’d like to get to the top. But that’s not true. I like the job I have. I have no desire to work in an office. I love working with patients. Hearing them tell me what’s wrong and finding a way to make things better for them.“
”Could it be that you’re scared you won’t measure up? Wanting to prove others wrong? You’d rather be the one who ends a relationship rather than the one who gets his heart broken?“
”Yes to all of the above.“ He nodded.
”Alright. That’s something we can work on.“ I said with renewed energy.
”How? We can’t just fix this mess in a matter of days.“
I smiled softly at him.
”No. But we can slowly build towards improving. You know there is a Hawaiian proverb my grandma always uses: A’ Ohe Pu’u Ki’eki’e Ke Ho’a’o ‘Ia e Pi’i.“
”Uhh…meaning?“ He asked.
”No cliff is so tall it cannot be climbed.“
”I kinda like that phrase.“ He said thoughtfully.
”Yeah it’s beautiful. You know what else? You’re not broken. It just means you haven’t figured out the right formula. I don’t want to turn you into someone you’re not. I just want you to realize that if you keep pushing people away who’d like to be in your life you’ll end up all alone. And that’s not what I want for you. You’re smart, funny and good-looking. Don’t let it go to waste.“
Tobias shook his head as grinned at me.
”You know? Now I understand why Bryce fell for you.“
I grinned at him.
”I told you so. There’s more to me than you might think.“
”I can see that. Also, please tell me I’m not the only one you boss around. At least tell me you do that to Bryce too.“
”Oh trust me I do.“ I laughed again because it felt as if we reached a good point. And I’m glad I could get him to open up.
I can see a big grin forming on Tobias face and I already knew there’s something snarky coming.
”Also I did get something right on the first try.“ He grinned.
”Let me guess how to do sex right.“ I sighed.
”No. It was actually how to pick friends. Maybe after we solve this mess I can try and restore some of my friendships.“
”You got this Carrick.“ I slapped his arm.
”Now you sound like Lahela.“
I winked at him.
”Now what?“ He asked after getting up.
”Now we slowly improve your image. With me by your side things can only get better.“ He laughed out loud and we continued to throw paint at the wall. We might’ve not solved everything, but we’re getting there.

oh my godddd just got recommended a post about how the slay the princess fandom is misogynistic and giving in to "the trend where fandom ignores the female characters" bc people are having fun shipping the voices. several comments were like 'ugh i know its so bad already ://" shut up. shut up shut up shut uppppppp
the slay the princess fandom is VERY small. if you check ao3, we've got less than 200 fics total. and guess what? the hero/princess ship is by FAR the most popular. the voice ships are miniscule in comparison. if people playing with m/m ships at ALL bothers you, you may in fact just be homophobic. (and maybe instead of bitching about how what a handful of other people create isn't to your liking, you could like. create something yourself.)
#fan wank /#i dont get too into actually angry fan wank like this very often#but oh my god#one of the comments said it 'failed the bechdel test'#IT HAS TWO CHARACTERS#THE GIRLS DONT EVER TALK TO EACH OTHER BECAUSE WE ARE IN THE BOY'S HEAD#ITS PART OF THE FUCKING PREMISE#(arguably 3 characters ig if the narrator counts as 'separate' but tbh im not sold on that)#anyway my friend wrote some very fun f/f about the nightmare and advarsary meeting within the shifting mound#i honestly think that if we WERE in the princess' head we'd see a lot like that#except we CANT be in the princess' head by definition bc she is a reflection of what the mc thinks of her#it HAS to be from his perspective

Company
Synopsis: Comfort goes both ways, even in the most unlikely times.
Category: Fluff.
Ethan sat at his office desk, eyes trained on the desktop screen but tonight his attention was not on paperwork or administration details. That had long since disappeared, ever since he stepped down from his role as Chief. Now, he was back to doing what he loved, being a doctor.
With Aspen at the helm of the diagnostic team and leading it beautifully, he was content in sitting back and letting her continue. So he spent most of his time in the clinic and wards, scanning through as many patients as possible. He had also begun writing his second book, the object currently holding his attention. Though not for long..
"Dada! " The tiny voice was followed by a splatter of footsteps and laughter as someone zoomed past his office towards the living room.
He got up, slightly exasperated, he had finally achieved putting Tatum down only 10 minutes back. He had waited until her eyelids had pressed shut, her breathing even and her tiny hand slowly let go of his.
"Tate" He saw her on the sofa, standing against the backrest, her dark hair plopping up and down as she jumped. Her honey orbs started at him, challenging him to make her stop. Suddenly he was stunned by her uncanny resemblance to his wife.
"How in the world did you get out of the crib? " He mostly asked himself.
"I hold the bars and then get on the dresser and from there.. I do this. " She had by now climbed onto the backrest and flung herself off it. Ethan scrambled to catch her, his heart dropping when he realised he was too far away.
She landed on her feet and he sighed in relief, he himself wasn't so lucky. His fall was only half aided by the carpet. His hip hit the floor, causing a light groan to leave him.
His daughter stared at him from above as he lay on his back. Her lips let out giggles before she grabbed his arm.
"Silly dada. "
"Silly indeed. " Ethan muttered, smiling.
She pulled him, indicating she wanted to go somewhere. Ethan found his footing, the pain subsiding as she walked towards the master bedroom. She waited for Ethan by the door, her little legs dancing about, impatient to enter but the dark too scary to tread.
The moment Ethan switched on the light, she rushed in, grabbing handfuls of the duvet to launch herself onto the bed. Making herself comfortable under the covers, she patted the space next to her, looking at Ethan who stood leaning against the door, his features perked up watching his younger daughter's antics.
He sat down next to her and she immediately snuggled into him, his large arm wrapping around her entire body as she blissfully rested her weight against him.
"Why aren't you in bed, my gorgeous tater tot? " Her eyes brightened at the mention of tater tots.
"It's scary dada. "
"What is? "
"The storm. "
The weather had been terrible the past weekend, causing half of his family to remain in Florida, where they were visiting Aspen's family. He had stayed behind as Tatum had just recovered from quite a severe bout of flu and it was unadvisable that she be subjected to plane travel so soon.
"Did that wake you up? " She nodded vehemently.
"You know, it was really scary for me as well. I still find it very difficult to sleep during storms. "
"Does Mommy hold you too, when you're scared and read you your favorite bedtime story? "
"Something like that. " Ethan smirked.
"I miss Mommy. " Tatum sighed dramatically, throwing herself on the pillows and pouting.
"Me too." Ethan admitted.
"You don't need to worry, I gotcha. " She assured, her earnest promise evident in the seriousness of her eyes.
"I know you do. Thank you. " Ethan answered, the reassurance more profound than he expected.
"Let's continue our bedtime story, yeah. "
"Yeah! " Tatum ran across the hall before returning back silently. She stood by the door, fingers in her mouth and mumbled.
"It's dark. "
"Let's go together. " Ethan picked her up, gently removing her fingers out of her mouth and giving her a stern look. She rested her head in the crook of his neck, her tiny hand resting on his jaw absentmindedly.
Having gotten her book, Danny the Champion of the World, they settled in bed. Two chapters later, she was fast asleep. Ethan smiled, looking at his little girl, suddenly finding himself glad that he wasn't alone at home tonight. She gave him more courage than he could fathom possible.
His phone buzzed, vibrating against the bedside table. He picked it up to see his wife's image pop up. He quickly swiped up to see her smiling into the camera.
"Hey. How's it going there. I miss you."
"The storm's still crazy. God, I wish your plane left yesterday, I miss you too. "
"Hmm. You holding up fine? I know bad weather makes you restless. Try to get some sleep, okay? "
It was true, the storms always unnerved Ethan. He remembered Louise leaving before a particularly bad one. With Alan still adjusting to the new life and responsibility, Ethan had braved through one such night all on his own. Ever since then, nights like these brought back those memories with them. But tonight he felt strangely calm even in the midst of one.
" Don't worry one bit about me. " He said turning the camera towards their sleeping daughter.
"I have company. "

Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry
Authors note: Submission for cfwc You go girls event. Prompt used is offering career advice
💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡
To Dr Ramsey,
As you are aware, my parting gift to the hospital when I step down as CEO later this year is a clinic based in one of the more working class areas of Boston where there is a large population that is ethnically and culturally diverse. The main focus of this clinic is to focus on Women’s health, family planning, education and health clinic for those who identify as LGBTQI+, as well as general health practices.
Given your current Advocacy work in the Women’s health and LGBTQI+ space, I am pleased to offer you the position of Director of the Delores Hudson Women’s and Community Health Clinic.
The offer is attached. I am giving you two weeks to think it over and for you to give me your final reply.
Regards
Caroline Bloom
CEO Edenbrook Hospital
Casey sits there stunned. She knew that there was going to be a new clinic and she knew it was going to be named after Delores, but director?
The team under her and Aurora’s leadership over the last two years had gone from strength to strength, the research arm overseen by Tobias was going great also.
The offer was generous, but she was still not sure if she was the right person. Yes she had done advocacy work within the lgbtqi+ and women’s health space but a white woman directing a health clinic in an area where she was the minority?
Casey was deep in thought when Aurora entered.
“What’s up Casey?” Aurora asked.
Casey startled and then calmed down.
“Sorry, was just in thought” said Casey.
“About the case?”
Casey shakes her head and shows Aurora the email.
“Oh my gosh Casey!!!” Exclaims Aurora, “this would be an awesome opportunity.”
“I know it is but a great one but answer me honestly. Would teenaged you or heavily pregnant you be willing to accept medical assistance from someone like myself?”
“I get where you are coming from but you do have a good profile within the community for the work you have done and continue to do.”
“That is true but will it be enough…”
“When do you need to give Caroline your answer?”
“Two weeks”
“My thoughts, have a think, have a chat although I know Ethan will say to take it but I really think you will do well.”
Casey however was not so sure. She did have a good reputation sure but was that enough. Casey wanted the endeavour to succeed.
A few days later she had her regular meet up with Tobias. He already knew of the offer from Ethan and if Tobias was being honest, he was surprised that Casey was unsure of taking the position. He knew that she would do a great job so when Casey asked him if Aurora would be a good fit for the role he was surprised. His initial reaction was why am I being asked.
Casey stated that you worked with Aurora at Kenmore, you have worked with her here, you saw first hand how she did in a leadership role last year when I was on maternity leave so you would be a good person to ask. And besides if I am going to decline and send a recommendation for whom I think should be in the role then it would look good if there is another endorsement. Tobias saw Casey’s point but he thought that the clinic would be a success but he also agreed that Aurora would be a good fit too.
Casey then thought some more and she was convinced that Aurora would be a better fit. She met with Aurora a few days before her answer was due.
“I have thought long and hard, discussed, written a pros and cons list, you name it I have done it. I have decided not to take the role. I will be recommending that you get offered the position”
Aurora was shocked.
“I was sure you would take the position. What swayed you?”
“I feel the clinic will have more success if there is people running and on staff that are more representative of the area we are going into. Where the clinic is, I am a minority, yes I have done much work in the women’s health and LGBTQI space which would make people receptive but you have a good reputation in the same areas also but I think with you at the helm, you will attract not only the clientele but also doctors who are culturally diverse and fit in better with the area we are going into.”
Aurora reflects on Casey’s words. She does agree with her that she too has a good reputation in the field but it is one thing being team leader for six months and running a clinic full time.
“Am I experienced enough, running a team for six months is different to running and building a clinic up full time.”
“I get where you are coming from, we all remember how I was when I was initially offered the team. I think you are ready. I will be willing to help and also work some time at the clinic as I think it will work well in the rotation. Other doctors in the hospital I am sure will be willing to offer advice and help also.”
“This is true…”
“You are not the woman I met in residency Aurora, the woman eager to escape the legacy of Harper and was convinced everyone only wanted you because of her.”
Aurora smiled.
“So I will be turning down the position but recommend that you be offered it and Tobias will also be sending in his recommendation for you also.”
Later that day Casey sent the following email to Caroline.
To Caroline
Thank you for the generous offer of employment as Director of the Delores Hudson Women’s and Community Health clinic.
After much deliberation I will be declining the offer.
I feel this endeavour will be more successful under the directorship of Dr Aurora Emery.
Again thank you for considering me and I look forward to working with the director of this endeavour, whomever it may be.
Regards,
Dr Casey Ramsey
Director Diagnostics team, Naveen Banerji Community Health Clinic, Edenbrook.
Caroline received the email from Casey and the accompanying one from Dr Carrick. If Caroline was honest, Aurora was someone she had considered also, but Casey won out to be offered the position first.
Caroline got to amending the offer and sent it to Aurora, like Casey giving her two weeks to think before deciding.
Two days later Aurora accepts the offer. She is excited for the opportunity and so is Casey.
——-
Authors note: The clinic is a huge success. Most of the staff is reflective of the area. Casey does some work at the clinic also, especially in the Advocacy space. The clinic when it is fully established is added into the clinical rotation and the residents really enjoy the differing perspectives and challenges that arise from working with culturally diverse staff and clientele.
The clinic was named after Delores at Ethan’s request and with permission from Alma. Ethan did not want her death to be in vain, Delores also lived near the area that the clinic is situated so it seemed fitting.
Caroline is well into her seventies when she retires. She retires so she can enjoy life instead of just working.

Can y'all stop making me feel things for F I'm trying to move on and romance someone else here! Definitely not catching feelings nope nothing to see here-
I'm gonna end up romancing F aren't I 😭
🤷🏻♀️ yk, I think F (Felix & Felicia) have the advantage of an already established fanbase. Therefore the content seems to almost push the reader back into their arms.
But; i want to clarify the following:
With your Ex, it will NOT all be so sugary sweet as it appears here. You will have enough moments in which you think „thank god we broke up“ or „omg why did i make the same mistake twice?“
Also; the other ROs have their own magic. I‘ll make sure to give each of them as much deserved screen time as I planned for their storyline, so that they‘re kinda equal, even if the dynamics are different! And once (i hope it‘ll happen at some point - maybe after their intro in the demo one day) they get their own fanbase, you‘ll be able to decide for yourself how deep you want to dive to discover their unique heart, mind and soul. There‘ll be many layers to unwrap for EACH of them, but some are sweet and others ugly.
#qna: pia#sigh oh F you lil heartbreaker#the mc not knowing yet what the other ROs will get them into 😂🤣☠️

Sunday Six #1 (holdover from January 1, 2023)
Sunday Six 1.1.2023
I'm wrapping up a few fics that will be out in the next couple of weeks (Vegas, Tobias/Casey HC). Then I will be working on some angsty things. Here is a sneak peek at the following four works:
Reset (Mini-Series) | OH - Ethan Ramsey x F!OC, F!MC (Kaycee), Tobias Carrick
Where We Go From Here (Mini-Series)| OH - Tobias Carrick x F!OC, F!MC (Casey)
Unnamed Mini Series | OH - Tobias Carrick x F!MC
Unnamed Fic (tied to A Mother's Journal) | WTD - Eli Sipes
The lights were off in his office when she entered; only the glow from Ethan’s laptop casting a blue hue over his face broke the darkness. His face. The face she loved and committed to memory. The lips that kissed away her tears and brought her to the peak of pleasure. And his eyes… eyes that, with just a glance, could see her very soul. Now, all appeared cold. Frigid.
He hadn’t moved a muscle since she entered, and if he was aware of her presence, he made no attempt to show it. In the silence of the room, her body trembled. She wanted to yell, to cry and throw things, to let him feel her rage. How dare he be in this state! So calm and tranquil, not a care in the world when he had stolen these very things from her.
She gritted her teeth, and her hands balled into fists at her side. She wanted to scream, but in the end, it was unnecessary as the pain and anger echoed in her quivering voice when she finally spoke.
“When were you planning to tell me… about her?”
Leisurely removing his glasses, he placed them on his desk and slowly rubbed his eyes before looking at her. His calm demeanor only fueled the anger boiling inside her.
“If you wish me to answer that question appropriately, it might help if you informed me who she is.”
Seething, she flicked on the light, removing the cloak of secrecy that had enshrouded them for so long.
“You know damn well who she is!”
Sienna massaged her brow as she attempted to figure out the next words to say. How does one find the words to fix a pain they both hoped was buried ten years before. What can one say?
“Casey,” she hesitated, “I think... I think it’s best to just leave Tobias alone.”
“Leave him alone!” Her friend spat back. “Leave him alone? I left him alone, Sienna! That’s what started this all. And by the time I realized it was a mistake, he… he moved on, so I left him alone again. Even though it ate at my soul every day of my life, I left him alone so he could be happy, only to learn… his heart was aching every bit as much as mine. I don’t know what to do. I have no idea what to do! He has a wife and a child… I don’t want to interfere, and I haven’t! He’s reaching out to me! But… leave him alone? I’ve left him alone time and again! And look at where it’s gotten us.”
He stood across the room, anxiously questioning every choice he made that brought them to this moment. He was no longer certain of anything except the amount of mistakes he had made along the way. Glancing over at Casey, sitting alone on their bed, she was emotionless and broken… and he wanted nothing more than to assure her that he hated himself. He hated himself more than she ever could… and right now, she probably hated him with all her heart. He thought he had it figured out; he believed he was doing the right thing, but looking at her now, the only thing he was sure of is he knew nothing at all.
“Call your mother,” she shivered.
“What?”
“Call your mother and tell her you need her to stay here… to help with the kids, because I’ll be going out of town.”
“Casey, you can’t….”
Her steely blue eyes locked on his and silenced him with a glance. “Call your mother. Because if you don’t, I will, and I assure you, you won’t like what I would have to say.”
He knew the way home.
It was one of the first things his parents had taught him and David when they were kids. The wilderness could be confusing during the best of times, and they moved here in circumstances that were anything but. Staying together was essential, but if they were lost, they had to know their way back home. Eli did. In seventeen years, he needed to use a compass only once. His father never had to come and look for him as he had for David. No. Eli always made it home.
He didn’t know what disorientated him today, but joy accompanied relief when he saw the familiar thicket of trees that led to the clearing that surrounded their home. Letting out a sigh, a smile formed on his lips. His perfect record remained unbroken, and he wouldn’t need to endure his father’s teasing. No one had to know about this at all.
He was alert. It was crucial at all times, but even more when he was alone. Each step was measured, and no unnecessary noise was to be had. His movements were deliberate. Even as the deer he had bagged weighed heavy on his shoulders. Normally he’d carry it with ease, but the time he spent lost had taken its toll, and his muscles were becoming fatigued. He comforted himself with thoughts of the delicious stew they’d enjoy. There would be no subsiding on squirrels today. His family would be pleased, and he would tease David for days to come. He’d just have to stay home if they wanted the good stuff.
With the quietest of chuckles, he stepped into the clearing. He was almost home.
