It would be hilarious if villains loved Nightwing and were terrified of Officer Dick Grayson.

Dick Grayson- who is used to open spaces and adrenaline- being stuck in a boring bleak office, surviving on shots of coffee and red bull with caffeine that would make Tim concerned.

The thugs soon realised that unlike most of the other cops - Dick was from Gotham.

No one fucks with Gothamites.

Villain *shooting at Dick with machine guns*

Dick: I wouldn’t take your eyes though.. they look like the inspiration behind the whole Medusa’s “look at it and you turn to stone” thing-

Dick *smile stretching wider without blinking* : oh? Or what? I know everything about you. Who says I can’t kill you and walk out with everyone being none the wiser? I know how to kill someone too..you aren’t special.

Murderer:

Murderer: I’m scared for my safety.

Because the thing is, Nightwing is who Dick really is. It’s who he can be free as, be himself as without red tapes and regulations. Where he can give as good as he gets, and he’s kind and empathetic. He gets to help the downtrodden and goes easy on most of them if they give up right away, not to mention the fact that he never causes permanent damage.

But officer Dick Grayson is a different story. He runs on sleepless nights and no self preservation. Seeing an officer with an uncanny skill set they’re scarily good at, not to mention the cheery attitude he always has scares the shit out of criminals. Cuz no way in hell is a smiling Gothamite not a deranged one. He chases crimes like a bloodhound, and isn’t afraid to make good on threats he makes to ensure they never hurt anyone again.

Bonus if the batfam doesn’t know about this.

Red hood: Shit I can’t believe we ended up in Bludhaven

Red Robin *tying up the corrupt politican* : Since this is a sensitive case, we need someone we can trust to make sure it is seen through.

Red hood: .. So we paying a visit to Officer Grayson?

Politician *screeching* : NO NO NO NO! PLEASE NOT HIM!! JUST KILL ME INSTEAD AND TAKE ALL MY MONEY I CANT DEAL WITH HIM!

Red hood: .. is he fucking serious?

Henchmen: Sir he is. And we agree. Please take our bones and kill us but don’t take us to Officer Grayson.

Red Robin: Wait what did he do?

Henchman 1: He asked boss if the hat was sentient.. and said that if it was would it make that hat the top and boss the bottom.

Henchman 2: Last time we met I tried to shoot him but suddenly my gun was blank and he raised his hand and let the ammo drop

Red Hood: Well even I could do that-

Henchman 2: They were my bullets. I had selected the colour personally.

Henchman 3: He sang a lullaby to a child when we were holding the station hostage, and replaced the people with my family members. He even sang their social security numbers!

Henchman 4: He’s the most dangerous of them all. I ain’t shitting ya when I say he’s as scary as the bat from Gotham.

*all nodding in agreement*

i am aware that dick is fully aware of the fact he can’t end corruption and chooses to be a cop anyway to be that one rare good guy in a sea of bad because that’s the kind of person he is but it’s funnier to imagine him as being the only person in the family more delusional than batman

Dick Grayson becoming a cop makes absolutely no sense to me.

On the most logistical level: It's not the kind of job that has the flexibility for a vigilante persona. They work long hours on cases and sometimes have to drop everything for a crisis. It's significantly harder to have someone take over your shift (especially on a vague regularity) as an officer than it is in most other fields.

SO DO VIGILANTES

Dick Grayson can't just go "Oh the world is ending I need to go take care of my dog" or something like that when he needs to suddenly suit up. Especially as *the* Bludhaven hero, he needs the ability to be there when it matters in order to gain the trust of civilians.

Also, he becomes a field liability if he's semi-regularly injured as Nightwing. If he can also just as easily get severe injuries as Officer Grayson? Nope, he'd be kicked off the force after coming in with like three injuries and they didn't even realize that he had four more in that time that he was hiding.

Lastly, this is the boy who:

- watched his parents die

- decided before puberty to go kill the killer because he didn't trust the cops to find out what happened

- was then raised as a justice vigilante in a city with some of the most corrupt police force in the DCU

Even if he saw Commissioner Gordon trying his hardest to do good work, he also would have seen just how much a few good cops are failed by many bad ones. He would know better in a city like Blud, which is probably most similar to Gotham.

There is no way a boy with that kind of upbringing and moonlighting as a vigilante would be a cop (if he does join, it absolutely doesn't last)

Definitely once, while Nightwing was giving Gordon an update on a case, there were three beeps in the distance and Nightwing tilted his head down to listen to a non-existent police radio.

"My bad." Nightwing shook his head and laughed. "What was I saying?"

Gordon narrowed his eyes, because he just did that too. "You're a cop??"

And Nightwing's laugh dies in horror.

Gotham Emergency

Chapter 2

     Duke stood nervously outside of the police station trying to gather up the courage to walk inside.

     'Come on man you can do this, you were top in your class for goodness sake'  Duke stared at the doorknob. He had heard many stories about the GCPD and thier, let's just say rather unorthodox methods 'I'm sure those were just exaggerations'

     "You going open it or stand there tile it opens itself" Duke looked over his shoulder to see a girl with white hair standing behind him impatiently.

     "Sorry," Duke said before darting inside only to be almost run over by a guy in skates.

     "Watch out!" the guy yelled as Duke moved out of the way as the guy darted past him before coming to a stop. He looked down at the stopwatch in his hand before looking back up at the other side of the station "forty-five seconds!" 

     "..." Duke stood there quietly as the guy, on skates, skated back to him.

      "You must be the new guy" the man smiled.

     "That obvious huh?" Duke asked.

     "Nah I'm just good reading people," he said still smiling "Dick Grayson nice to meet you"

     "Duke Thomas" He smiled "So what was that all about"

     "Case research," Dick said as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

    "Oh" Duke muttered 'I knew I should have stayed in Bludhaven'

     "If you're looking for the chief office it's two doors down on the left" Dick pointed down the left hallway" 

      "Thanks" Duke nodded before walking down the hallway Sir," He said quietly opening the door. Inside was a man sitting down at his desk holding a stack of papers 

     "Ah you must be my transfer from Buldhaven," he said putting the papers down.

     "Yes sir," Duke said standing at attention.

     "Calm down son, this ain't the military" Commissioner Gordan mused holding out his hand "I'm Jim Gordan"

     "Nice to meet you Commissioner," Duke said returning his smile.

      "Pick up your bag and uniform at the front desk over there and you'll be riding alone with Officer Grayson" Duke nodded before walking out of the office.

     "Thank you, Commissioner" Duke nodded  before walking out 'He seemed pretty normal"

Timeskip

     Duke felt a lot more relaxed now that he was in uniform. As he walked into the bullpen he noticed Dick sitting at the desk across from his with a red-haired girl.

     "Oh hey, new guy!" Dick called waving him over. Duke walked over to join them"This is Barbara"

     "Hey, I'm-"

     "Duke Thomas, top of your class and one of Buldhaven's top cadets" Barbara smiled holding out her hand "I read your resume pretty impressive"

     "Thanks" Duke smiled nervously shaking her hand.

     "That's pretty big praise, Babs here isn't impressed easily" Dick grinned "So you ready for your first ride"

     "Yeah," Duke said more confidently, he was in fact nowhere near ready...

Edit: Guys I’ve read through the comments and all and realised that it’s been interpreted way differently then what I intended it to be. This was basically supposed to be a fun take that Bludhaven doesn’t care about how Dick gets the proof as long as it serves justice and it’s the truth. This post was supposed to be one of those scenarios in movies and tv serials where the heroes uncover the crimes by taking it upon themselves even though it may be against the law, and how the officials find it hard to believe their story but since the evidence they found is actually damning and proof that the guy is innocent/guilty they let it slide, PROVIDED no one was harmed or they created violent scale incidents. Dick Grayson as a police officer and Nightwing are both highly trusted and valued so they know they’d always get the proof so the community gives them a bit of leeway when it comes to the finer details.

I noticed that the way I framed things was misleading so I’ve changed the wordings, and hope this is better gets my point across

Dick is a cop.

But Bludhaven does NOT care about rules if the job gets done.

Dick Grayson is used to loopholes, but here he doesn’t even need to offer an explanation, no one even bothers to care. This was Bludhaven and actually doing his job was almost impossible through all the invisible red tape. So he thrived in the area of greys.

Dick *rounding up criminals and placing proof that by no way could have even been found, forget legally*

His handler *looks through them* : He’s the guy

Dick: .. yeah

Handler: .. and no mafia gonna declare war on you?

Dick: uh- don’t think so?

Handler: good, book him.

It does horrify all the justice league and batfamily because now instead of the painstaking work they have to put up that explains the many missing hole in their stories of how the information was obtained legally, nightwing can just walk into the police station, leave a sticky note saying “he’s the guy for the crime, I’ll get the evidence in a month brb. Signed, Nightwing~” and no one bats an eye. Because they know he’d always get the proof, and it’s always the truth.

Sometimes an officer even just takes a photo of a guy and texts nightwing “this the guy for the Nelson murder?” And if there’s a “yep :)” then that’s that.
