August 2024 - Kenya’s political elite is trying to criminalize protests. The government is currently considering a bill that would give the police official authority to ban and crush protests, imposing fines and jail sentences for protesters. Due to the recent uprising, the government was forced to scrap the Finance Bill, an IMF plan that would have significantly raised the cost of living. During the protests in June, more than 50 people were shot dead by the police and many more were abducted, with some people still missing. While the Finance Bill was officially scrapped, Kenya’s top court suspended the ruling that denounced the bill as unconstitutional. This has sparked fears amongst Kenyans that the government will try to implement the law again. Nevertheless, Kenyans have said they will take to the streets should such an event occur. [video]

does "i wont speak without a lawyer present" still apply in other countries besides the us? (specifically the netherlands) or is the 'script' different?

I only know the rules for the Netherlands: We don't have the ridiculous miranda rights song and dance you have to do with the magic phrases to make sure the cops won't argue that you want a lawyer-dog, but otherwise yes. You have the right to be silent, you have the right to speak to a lawyer before your first official interrogation, etc. When you've been arrested never speak to the cops about what happened, why you were there, who you were there with, or anything. They'll try to be chatty and friendly and pretend that they might release you if you explain yourself, but they're just gathering information to fuck you with. Just shut up, or tell them no comment, or say "Ik beroep me op mijn Zwijgrecht" (I'm using my right to be silent). Dont worry, you dont have to attempt to say that in Dutch if you dont speak it.
