Cada noche de verano, sorprende abriendo sus flores amarillas, dejando entrever sus vainas cubiertas de pelusa donde se encuentran las semillas. Os estoy hablando de la 'Oenothera', comúnmente llamada 'onagra' o 'hierba del asno'. Ésta en particular (la de la fotografía) es una 'Oenothera lamarckiana'. Se trata de una planta anual que florece fuertemente en verano y muere con la llegada de la primera helada. La Oenothera ha sido usada por los Nativos Americanos durante siglos. Usaban la planta como infusión en agua caliente para curar heridas, problemas cutáneos e incluso el asma. La onagra sólo aparece en Europa a partir del siglo XVIII.
