Not dead, just different.

In the 1960s, San Diego’s Stardust Motor Hotel was described as one of the most outstanding hotel and golf facilities in the country. At the time, it was home to a 27-home golf course and the San Diego PGA tournament. It offered 225 rooms and guests had their choice of visiting various themed banquet halls, restaurants, lounges and night clubs which included the Tower Room, Terrace Room, Garden Room, Crane Room and Coral Room.

One of the hotel’s most popular amenities was found in the Reef Lounge where you could get a Mai Tai and watch an underwater mermaid show behind plexiglass windows. Though the lounge has been renovated and the show stopped decades ago, the original pool and windows are allegedly still there, closed off and hidden away from the public.

The hotel has been owned by the Handlery family since the 1950s and now exclusively goes by the name Handlery Hotel. Since its heyday in the 50s and 60s, it has gone through multiple renovations drastically changing the exterior and midcentury facade.
