Cinderella (Obey Me Edition)

(Part 2, Part 3)

Once upon a time....

You were broke. Your job barely paid minimum wage and most of your cash went to paying the rent. Things like buying yourself new clothes that actually looked good on you or any sort of hobby items were out of your reach, unless you wanted to skip breakfast for the next few weeks.

Money had always been a difficulty for you but especially hurt when your friends went out to a fancy restaurant or some event where you couldn't attend due to your minimal paycheck. Perhaps you told yourself it was fine. Perhaps you hated it. But you had to move forwards, looking towards an uncertain future. Making do with what you could get at every turn.

Yet months of such conditions can wear a person down. Most of your time was taken up by work, creating an isolating atmosphere. The loneliness within your heart grew with every passing day as the world around you began looking duller and duller with each passing day. All you wanted was one nice night out with a few friends...

One day, a letter arrived.

It was right at your doorstep despite the fact you had a perfectly functional mailbox. A black envelope with gold trimmings and a dark red seal laid right at your door. When you took it inside and opened it, you found a beautifully handwritten invitation by some guy named Diavolo.

"Dear Recipient,

Congratulations! You have been selected to attend the Royal Seven Night Masquerade held by Prince Diavolo this year. This event shall be inviting two humans and two angels to help encourage relations.

Please sign the letter below to confirm your attendance to this event.

Yours sincerely,

Diavolo."

You blinked and stared at the letter for a few minutes. Was this a prank? You'd never heard of any prince Diavolo before. Still... the idea of a masquerade party sounded nice, even if it was just a prank in the end. Without thinking, you signed your name on the letter.

For the rest of the day you went about your business. The next night, you heard a knocking at your door. It was 7pm and nobody was supposed to be visiting. The idea that it could be your landlord made you internally groan as you went to open the door.

It wasn't the landlord.

A man with short dark green hair and a long fringe on his left that reached his nose. He wore a black tailcoat with gloves and had a prim and proper air about him.

"Are you MC?"

You silently nodded, still confused by this stranger and a bit wary at this un-welcomed visitor.

"Excellent. I'll be escorting you to this evening's masquerade."

Masquerade? What was he-

Then it hit you. The letter. You'd originally thought it was just a prank by some kid. The idea it may have been real hadn't even occurred to you. For a moment, you were stunned. The stranger was rather patient and seemingly amused by your confusion.

"I....I can't go to the masquerade," you explained when you finally found your voice.

"And why is that?"

He hadn't even changed his amused expression, just looking at you with a slight smile.

"I have nothing to wear," a part of you hated admitting it but in this moment you had no other excuse, "And I don't have a way to get there."

"Is that all?" Even after explaining all your reasons, the stranger seemed undeterred, "If that's the case, may I borrow a teapot if you have one?"

Your face must have twisted into a sour expression at the thought of giving up your one teapot, because the stranger was quick to reassure you.

"I promise, it will be returned to you unharmed."

Maybe it was the sincerity in his voice or your own curiosity. Either way, you ended up handing the precious teapot over. The stranger set it on the ground and took a few steps back. Right before your eyes, the teapot began to grow as swirls of colorful light encircled it.

When the light died down, a beautiful lavender blue carriage with a spout, handle, and golden wheels with little encrusted diamonds stood in place of your teapot. Your jaw dropped at the sight. Were you dreaming? What on earth was happening?

"The carriage will bring you to the steps of Diavolo's castle. As for your clothes...."

The same strange lights that had transformed your teapot now surrounded you. In a matter of seconds, your pjs had transformed into a gorgeous outfit of the finest silk and dripping with accessories you could only dream of. Even your hair and makeup were done to perfection in the most flattering of ways. Upon your face was a beautiful mask that would fit in any fantasy ball scene. And on your feet were a pair of glittering glass shoes that were surprisingly comfortable.

"I... how.... what?" you stammered.

"Now, there are a few rules you'll need to be mindful of," The stranger continued on with a smile, "First, don't tell anybody at the masquerade you are human, for your own sake. Second, leave before the witching hour. Once again I recommend that for your own sake. And to encourage you to follow the rules, this spell will only last until midnight. Once the clock strikes midnight, this spell will be undone and you'll be left in your pjs with only a teapot."

The stranger looked at you closely.

"Do you understand?"

Once he got a small nod from you, he simply bowed and left you alone to your own devices. Now it was all up to you. Would you go to the ball or would you stay home? Even if you disliked big events, it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

You carefully stepped into the magical teapot carriage and sat upon the pink cushioned seats within. The wheels of the carriage automatically began to turn and you were whisked off to the masquerade ball.

Halloween Prank Problems (Yet another Halloween themed event. MC has a weird dream about the Demon Bros. and the Triworlds gang engaging in a prank war);

Valentine's Day Canceled?! + A Weird White Day (V-Day themed events. The gang tries to calm down angry and heartbroken spirits so they can celebrate the holidays in peace with MC);

Happy⭐Holidays! (Christmas themed. RAD's decorating event and Diavolo's wellbeing are in jeopardy as an ancient evil threatens to ruin the holidays);

Absolute Zero (Carnival/Mardi Gras themed. MC becomes the representant of a major winter event, all the while trying to solve a huge crisis of dying crops);

Revolution of the Stained Glass Flower (Band themed. When ancient demonic treasures are unearthed, a powerful reality-bending relic is discovered).

One of the biggest themes of the play is how parents affect their kids, intentionally or not. There are some examples of positive relationships, but a hell of a lot of negative ones. Little Red probably had the best one, but it was offscreen; her mother gave her good advice, and her grandmother helped protect and support her. Jack’s was also pretty good; it had its bumpy moments, but was generally positive. And the ghost of Cinderella’s mother looked after her as well as she could—she’s not quite in this world so her abilities are limited, but still impressive compared to most dead parents (Cinderella has magical ability, btw, so that might’ve enforced the connection).

However … Cinderella is abused by her stepmother and the stepsisters, who follow their mother’s example. To make it worse, Cinderella’s father is still alive and living with them. And the stepmother favors her own daughters, but that doesn’t stop her from mutilating their feet, saying they’ll “have such a life, you’ll never need to walk.” Forget that it was unsuccessful, it permanently altered their lives for the worse.

Rapunzel was kidnapped and raised in extreme isolation. Her mom (I call the Witch that, because that’s what she was to Rapunzel) provided for most of her immediate needs and desires and kept her “safe”—or so she thought—in shielding her from the rest of the world and its harsh lessons. However, she went to the other extreme when Rapunzel defied her, and sent her into another isolation by kicking her out into a desert. Again, isolated, but without security or protection of the tower. Rapunzel gave birth to twins while alone out there, with ZERO knowledge of anything on the topic, and having extreme terror of her surroundings. She had no coping mechanisms, no survival lessons, everything was scary and new—the most knowledge she had was how harsh it was outside her tower. And then her tower was no longer safe because it was her mother’s.

We only hear of one part of the Witch’s relationship with her mother: that if the Witch ever, EVER lost her mother’s beans, she’d be cursed with ugliness. Therefore the Witch came to value her youth and beauty and fear ugliness. Her mom is likely deceased, but she still affects the Witch, as shown in how she parents Rapunzel—overly shielding her from “harsh” lessons, while meting out a harsh lesson herself when she felt one was called for. And it was an overreaction to say the very least, just as her own mother cursed her if she did the wrong thing even after she had died (the wrong thing being losing some beans).

The Baker’s experience is also bad, but slightly more mixed. His father went off into the Woods when his wife died and he & his son were cursed to never have children. He wasn’t seen again until years later, when he tried to make up for abandoning his son by offering him advice and steering events so that his son & daughter-in-law could achieve their goal of breaking the curse. It was awkward and clumsy, but it got them there in the end. He died at that point … but he still affected his son even from beyond the grave.

When the Baker’s wife dies, the Baker nearly followed his father’s example and tried to run away from his immediate problems and situations—including his own baby. The interesting thing here, though, is he takes a good hard look at his father’s actions and the effect it had … the effect it’s still having … and changed his mind. If we’re getting technical, it’s still a case of running away and then returning to deal with it, but it only took an hour or two at most for him, while for his dad it was years. Also, it was his father’s very actions that pointed out the error of what the Baker was about to do—and that’s why the song “No More” is sung by both the Baker and the ghost of the Mysterious Man (his father). He had to relate to him in order to learn and do the better thing.

As for the Baker’s son? TBD, but there’s hope.

MC regularly tells the bros about their dreams, and since some of the dreams are the in-game events, it gets weird.

Asmo: Are you alright, MC? Did you not sleep well?

MC: No it’s just... I had a really weird dream. You were there, and you were there, you all were there!

Beel: What happened in the dream?

MC: It was us but... Cinderella...

Mammon: I was totally Prince Charming, right MC?

MC: No... it was Simeon...

Asmo: Was I the fairy godmother?!

MC: Yeah! Beel, Belphie, and Levi were the mice, but they still looked the same... just smaller! Lucifer, Mammon, and Satan were the... uh... not-ugly-but-still-really-mean step-brothers! They didn’t let me go to the ball because my clothes looked shitty! And they kept telling me to clean stuff! In the dream they woke me up at five in the morning to make me clean the kitchen! FIVE IN THE MORNING!

Satan: Yeah, that should have tipped you off that it was a dream. Rule number 25 of the House of Lamentation states that one should not wake Belphie or MC to clean or do chores unless you are prepared to lose an arm.

Belphie: I’m so glad that rule is in place.

MC: And my dream missed a golden opportunity to make Lucifer the cat.

Satan: Cat?

MC: In the 1950-something movie, the evil stepmother has a cat named Lucifer.

Satan: ...I’ve found my pick for movie night.

(*many dream events later*)

Asmo: MC! Did you dream about us?

MC: ... so we were all a part of the mafia-

Also THIS part surprised me XD

At first I thought diavolo was going to be the fairy godmother and asmo the prince. Then when asmo was the fairy godmother I was like awww it would have been funnier the other way but i understand this makes sense.

But then it showed Simeon as the prince and i was like I WANNA DANCE WITH THE ANGEL BOI! PLEASE LET ME! Of course it didnt but I really liked that they had simeon give you a chose instead of nope your coming with me now! I wouldve of like the option to say yes though that way I couldve chosen both options.

Diavolo and barbattos were there though. So now I'm like is Barbatos still part of the castle staff! And what is diavolo in this world? It would of been cute if he still was the king and just incognito at the ball. But I was also getting Cheshire cat vibes off him lol.

Okay, I may have gotten a little carried away with what was supposed to be a quick sketch.

Matteo’s escorts have to hurry their asses out of the party before they turn into pocket beebs.

I started this because I was trying to figure out if I could design men’s glass slippers, since this event was really good at being gender neutral. The answer ended up being rococo fashion. Actually I think they’d feel really sweaty and uncomfortable... And you really can’t wear normal stockings in them or you’d slide right out.

But anyway I ended up coming up with this slightly Disney-inspired getup for male/non-dress-wearing MCs. The vest is actually a corset.

Did I mention I really like costume design? Personally, I’d wear the fuck out of this. I don’t really have the gams for it though.

That said, there’s way too much detail in this piece. I don’t know if I’m proud of that or not. Haha.

It was... strange to have you here.

Here, in his home.

Lucifer letting you stay here, in the devildom, even if only for a three day trip was. Well. Simeon couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips. He really had let a lamb into a den of wolves.

But there wasn't anything to worry for. You were his lamb. Curled up, asleep, in his lap, within his garden, as he got to lovingly toy with a lock of your hair.

Luke was long asleep in his room, and as was your fellow human exchange student. It was annoying that Solomon had  followed you here, but it was no matter. There was no one to cry or complain as he bent to kiss the strands he held, the sound of the kiss quiet under the devildom’s perpetual night sky.

I just realized that this is also my first time drawing Asmo, his eyes gave me a little trouble for some reason.
