"Microscopic World"

So many natural processes take place right in front of us, but they're too small and too fast to see. Here, the Beauty of Science team puts some of those processes -- crystallizing solids, nucleating bubbles, and more -- front and center. The shapes and colors draw you in, inviting you to engage with science we see daily but rarely appreciate. (Video and image credit: Beauty of Science) Read the full article

The basis for this pattern of lignification is not well understood, but it is generally speculated that nucleation sites exist in the pectin-rich middle lamella where lignification starts and that physical characteristics of the wall matrix may influence radical-based monolignol polymerization and cross-linking to wall polysaccharides.

The polymerization of G-actin in the absence of ABPs in a test tube is not only concentration-dependent, whereby it must reach a critical concentration in order to polymerize, but also time-dependent, requiring time for nucleation of monomers into a size stable enough to allow further elongation (Figure 1.25A). (...) F-actin slowly hydrolyzes ATP to ADP (green subunit to orange subunit transition in Figure 1.25). Profilins regulate the balance between G- and F-actin (Figure 1.25B). New F-actin is initiated in two ways: by filament growth activated by proteins called formins (Figure 1.25C), and by branching from filaments at junctions formed by the actin filament nucleator Arp 2/3 (Figure 1.25D). (...) But microfilaments can be stabilized into bundles through association with the proteins villin and fimbrin (see Figure 1.25B and C). (...) The assembly of microtubules from free tubulin in a test tube follows a similar time-dependent pattern as that of actin, involving nucleation, elongation, and steady state phases (see Figure 1.25A). (...) CHUP1 recruits G-actin and actin-polymerizing proteins to extend an existing F-actin filament (see Figure 1.25).

A binucleated red blood cell circulating in the peripheral blood of an approx. 2-year-old cat, with a working diagnosis of possible lymphoma based on pathology from several organ aspirates.
Nucleated red bloods are primarily seen in animals with a strong regenerative anemia. Finding this little guy hanging out with too much nucleus was a surprise!

Dancing Peanuts
Tumblr media
Bartenders in Argentina sometimes entertain patrons by tossing a few peanuts into their beer. Initially, the peanuts sink, but after a few seconds they rise, wreathed in bubbles. (Image and research credit: L. Pereira et al.; via APS Physics) Read the full article

When a gas bubble grows to a sufficient size that the inward force resulting from surface tension is less than the outward force due to negative pressure in the liquid phase, the bubble will expand.

The Science of Beer - Nucleation
When a beer is poured, carbonation rises to the top forming a layer of bubbles also known as the head, foam, Kräusen. These serve a specific purpose towards the enjoyment of your drink. They preview flavors and aromas to wet the pallet, activate salivary glands and prepare the senses for the imbibing experience.
This is Nucleation. This bubble party sitting atop your glass is the formation of the active compounds in the beer. Ever eaten a Ghost pepper & felt the heat? Or a cool feeling with peppermint? It's the same with nucleation.
Glassware nowadays can be customized with an etching on the bottom. The nucleated glasses have rough surfaces from the etching that causes bubbles to collect. When a sufficient number of bubbles has gathered, they release and drift towards the top of the glass forming a head. This can help sustain a fuller beer head and enhance flavors for a longer, more enjoyable drink.

@andalitebonsai #really losing my mind at the idea that like by book four#some mid-level yeerk was starting a very quiet project of collecting DNA samples#YEARS of this project quietly trying to get enough proof to even bring it up goddddd#no wonder they lost#the 'empire is dysfunctional' thing isn't new to me but man#i never really thought about how long that blood project was running
Yeah! I don't know if it was really a 2.5-year effort or not. But it is wicked hard to get any DNA from mammal blood, much less enough to run a test. So, could be.
(Side note: no wonder Tobias was the first one found out — he's got DNA in every blood cell!)
So a lot of the earlier audio books showed up at my library’s Libby account (after I requested them - happy they said yes). Anyways I’m listening to Book #4 and Cassie overheard Chapman and Tom suspecting they’re not Andalites but humans. BUT they can’t tell Visser 3 because he refuses to consider it. Anyways, my question is how would the Yeerks operate differently if they acknowledged the possibility of human morphers earlier in the storyline?
YESSS. That moment where we hear Inis 226 (Chapman) and Temrash 114 (Tom) discussing the possibility of human morphers in book 4 has always felt so important. It speaks to the fact that the Yeerk Empire's leadership is just as responsible for its failures as the Animorphs are.
Like, Temrash 114 knows that a) humans were seen fleeing the scene of Elfangor's ship crash, b) humans ran into the ocean near where a piece of andalite wreckage washed up, and c) at least one member of the resistance got into the Yeerk Pool by pretending to be human. When he finds out the Animorphs' identities, he's shocked that some "midget kid" is leading the resistance (#6) but adjusts quickly to the idea of human Animorphs.
So why is there no investigation into human morphers? Well, Iniss says it: "Visser Three wrong? Maybe. But I'm not the fool who's going to try and tell him" (#4). Visser Three chops the heads off of people who disagree with him. Of course you don't suggest that he reconsider his assumption the resistance are andalites. Not unless you're 100% certain. Not unless you can come to him with, say, DNA evidence of humanness (#49). Which yeerks are implied to have been gathering for years for that exact purpose.
So I think some yeerks suspect human morphers right from the start. But they can't get permission to do anything about it, won't even dare bring it up, until they're absolutely sure they're right.
