eisenhower.nps is located in Cumberland Township, #Pennsylvania, adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield. This site preserves the home and farm of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, and its surrounding property of 690 acres. The property was purchased by then-General Eisenhower and his wife Mamie in 1950. The farm served as a weekend retreat for the President and a meeting place for world leaders, and became the Eisenhowers' home after they left the White House in 1961. The property has a putting green, skeet range, and view of South Mountain and the Gettysburg Battlefield. It was also a successful cattle operation, with a show herd of black Angus cattle. Some of the more notable of Eisenhower's guests were Premier Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union, President Charles de Gaulle of France, and former Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain. The Eisenhowers donated their home and farm to the @NationalParkService in 1967, with lifetime living rights for the former president. Two years later, Eisenhower died at the age of 78. Mamie Eisenhower rejected the idea of moving to Washington to be closer to family and friends and, with Federal permission, lived on the farm until her death in 1979. The National Park Service opened the site in 1980. #pa #pahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorepa #FindYourPark #architecture #eisenhower #eisenhowernhs #smallparksaturday #cumberlandtownshippa #gettysburgpa (at Eisenhower National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSqDMkDj2It/?utm_medium=tumblr

Battery Gunnison, known as Battery New Peck following its modernization in 1943, at Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook in #NewJersey, now part of @gatewaynps. Battery Gunnison was built in 1904 as a reinforced concrete, Endicott Period battery with two six inch M1903 “disappearing” guns to protect New York City from naval attack. It was named in honor of Captain John Williams Gunnison, a US Army topographical engineer. In 1943, the “disappearing” guns were removed and the battery was modernized with two 6" M1900 pedestal mounted rifles from Battery Peck, also located at Fort Hancock. It was then used as an examination battery, which meant that it fired a warning shot at a ship that was not authorized to enter New York Harbor before shooting to destroy. Battery Gunnison/New Peck was deactivated in 1946. Since 2003, the battery has been under the careful #restoration of the Army Ground Forces Association, a non-profit living history group. They regularly open the interior of the battery for tours (during non-COVID times). #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #OptOutside #FindYourPark #architecture #archi_ologie #sandyhook #gatewaynps #militaryhistory #visitnj #batterygunnuison #batterynewpeck (at Battery John Gunnison / New Fremont Peck) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMaz6RYDCHa/?igshid=1pykz7wylg5cy

The interior of Aspet at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, #NewHampshire. The park preserves the home, gardens, grounds, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848 - 1907), one of America's foremost sculptors best known for his monuments to the Civil War and his designs for the US $10 and $20 gold coins. The site is centered around Saint-Gaudens home, Aspet, which was built as an inn about 1817 and subsequently remodeled to suit his tastes after purchasing in 1892. Saint-Gaudens worked there during the summers between 1885 and 1897. Aspet became his family's year-round residence in 1900. It was named Aspet after his father's birthplace in France. The Cornish Colony of artists developed around the area, including painters Maxfield Parrish, Thomas Dewing, and Kenyon Cox; dramatist Percy MacKaye; American novelist Winston Churchill, architect Charles Platt; and sculptors Paul Manship, Herbert Adams, and Augustus' brother Louis Saint-Gaudens. After Saint-Gaudens death in 1907, his wife Augusta sought to make the property a memorial to her husband and as a place to exhibit his art and educate visitors about his work. In 1919, the non-profit Saint-Gaudens Memorial was founded. The trustees operated the Saint-Gaudens site as a museum from 1927 until 1965, when the property and its collections were donated to the @NationalParkService. #nh #nhhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenewhampshire #architecture #archi_ologie #art #smallparksaturday #saintgaudensnationalhistoricalpark #nrhp #cornish #cornishnh #aspet #FindYourPark (at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJM7ap1jpFH/?igshid=180zzu9t0aphs

Have you ever visited the Cross Estate, part of the New Jersey Brigade Area at @morristownnps in Bernardsville, #NewJersey? The original twenty-three room house, built in 1905, formed the centerpiece of John A. Bensel's 300 acre "Queen Anne Farm." The estate included a carriage house, five-story stone water tower, and gate house. In 1929, W. Redmond and Julia Appleton Newbold Cross purchased the home and renamed it "Hardscrabble House." After Mr. Cross' death in 1940, the house was extensively remodeled. In 1975, 162 acres of the property were added to the park from the children of W. Redmond and Julia Cross. The water tower was also built 1905, most likely from locally quarried granite. Two balconies once surrounded the second and fifth floors but were removed for safety reasons. An engine in a separate pump house fed well water into the tower which provided pressure for the plumbing system in the house. It is believed that the water tower was electrified after the Cross purchase of the property in 1929. Since then, it has supplied all of the water to the house and grounds. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #FindYourPark #architecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #morristownnps #militaryhistory #visitnj #smallparksaturday #crossestate #njbrigadearea #bernardsville #bernardsvillenj (at Cross Estate Gardens) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ4tw31DVin/?igshid=1swgpbqzcmizr

The Nathanael Greene monument at @guilfordnps in Greensboro, #NorthCarolina. The American forces were under the command of Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. The monument was dedicated July 3, 1915. The smaller bronze figure at the front is a representation of a classically-garbed Athena with a shield and laurels. The monument was sculpted by Francis Herman Packer. #nc #nchistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #explorenc #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #guilfordcourthouse #nationalmilitarypark #greensboro #greensboronc #smallparksaturday #nathanaelgreene (at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF0xv6Ej36G/?igshid=7xz5ay0msdz0

Last weekend we visited @guilfordnps in Greensboro, #NorthCarolina. The park commemorates the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, fought on March 15, 1781. Although this battle was won by the British, it opened the campaign that led to American victory in the #RevolutionaryWar. The losses by the British in this battle contributed to their surrender at Yorktown seven months later. The American forces were under the command of Nathanael Greene. The military park was established on March 2, 1917. It was transferred from the War Department to the @NationalParkService on August 10, 1933. During the time of the battle, New Garden Road, which has mostly been preserved as a foot/bicycle path, was the main thoroughfare through this area and remains. There is no archaeological evidence of Guilford Courthouse (it was built in 1775 without a foundation), which served as the first county courthouse until it was moved about six miles south in 1808. #nc #nchistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #guilfordcourthouse #nationalmilitarypark #greensboro #greensboronc #smallparksaturday #newgardenroad (at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFstJUyDiE-/?igshid=195b9wcqqugxg

It’s been exactly four years since we have been to the National Park sites in Hyde Park, #NewYork. On Sunday we revisted the three sites that are located within a few miles of each other. All of the buildings are currently closed, but the grounds are open. The third I am featuring is Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site. The property is also known as Val-Kill and is about two miles east of Springwood, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's home. This property was built so that Eleanor could develop some of her ideas for work with winter jobs for rural workers and women. She liked being there more than at the "big house," which was still run by FDR's mother, Sara. This site is drastically different from FDR's mansion - it is very simple and modest, as opposed to lavish. Stone Cottage was built between 1924 and 1926 and is the only residence Eleanor personally owned and the property was the site of Val-Kill Industries. Stone Cottage would also be Eleanor's home after the death of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1945. In 1936, Eleanor remodeled the Val-Kill factory on the site into a 20-room house (now called Val-Kill Cottage) with an apartment for her personal secretary, an office, living room, and dining room for entertaining guests. After Eleanor's death in 1962, the Val-Kill Cottage was converted into rental units and later sold to developers. It was saved through a public campaign and on May 26, 1977 became a unit of the @NationalParkService. The site opened to the public in 1984. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #valkill #eleanorroosevelt #natinalhistoricsite #iloveny #hydepark #hydeparkny #hudsonrivervalley #hudsonrivervalleynha #smallparksaturday #stonecottage (at Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEVRaWCj4uq/?igshid=d4qb80xkm3rb

A view from @saguaronationalpark in Tucson, #Arizona. The park is home to the nation's largest #cacti. The giant saguaro is the universal symbol of the American west. These majestic plants, found only in a small portion of the United States, are protected by the park, which is split into two separate districts on each side of Tucson. In 1933, President Herbert Hoover established the original park, which was called Saguaro National Monument, in the Rincon Mountains. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy added the Tucson Mountain District to the monument. Congress combined the #Tucson Mountain District and the #Rincon Mountain District to form the national park in 1994. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on 12/10/2020 that would expand Saguaro National Park. The bill would authorize the Secretary of the Interior to acquire 1,232 acres and add them to the park. #az #azhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #exploreaz #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #saguaronationalpark #saguarocactus #explore #tucsonaz #nationalpark #wnpa1938 #optoutside (at Saguaro National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIuIKa_D41F/?igshid=pt00c8zdzac9

The Sandy Hook Proving Ground at @gatewaynps in #NewJersey. The proving ground conducted its first test fire in October 1874. The L-shaped concrete wall, called a traverse, shielded the most important buildings on the Sandy Hook Proving Ground - the magazines. Two traverses protected the magazines from Proof Battery, where guns were tested. The red brick magazine buildings were built in 1902 and 1903 and torn down in the 1960s. After World War I, the Sandy Hook Proving Ground closed and transferred its personnel and equipment to a new Proving Ground at Aberdeen, Maryland. Today, only 13 structures remain from the Proving Ground, including the two traverses. The foundations from the magazine buildings are also visible. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #OptOutside #FindYourPark #architecture #archi_ologie #sandyhook #gatewaynps #militaryhistory #igloomagazines #visitnj #provingground #sandyhookprovingground (at Gateway National Recreation Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGd495HjMTa/?igshid=8u5xmd2jwfat

Another part of @guilfordnps in Greensboro, #NorthCarolina is Hoskins Farm. Joseph and Hannah Hoskins had lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania and wanted to leave the battleground of the #RevolutionaryWar. In North Carolina, the land was comparatively cheap and the Revolutionary War was not in the south (yet). On May 18, 1778, Joseph Hoskins purchased 150 acres of land “on Horsepen Creek and on both sides of the main road” in Guilford County where the Hoskins’ undoubtedly hoped to begin a new life. The Hoskins farm was only a mile to the west of Guilford Courthouse along the New Garden Road and the property figured into this battle on March 15, 1781. The #farm suffered damage during the battle, but the family survived and would remain on the land for many years to come. The site preserves a clapboard-faced log cabin built by members of the family in the early 1800s. Around it, a forge, barn, and kitchen recreate the farm as it appeared during the battle. #nc #nchistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #explorenc #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #guilfordcourthouse #nationalmilitarypark #greensboro #greensboronc #smallparksaturday #hoskinsfarm (at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFvc5l-jhEu/?igshid=10hwkwa83a8nb

The rear, or river elevation, two-story, semicircular portico at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The #mansion and tiered formal gardens sit on a 211 acre property that overlooks the Hudson River. Frederick William Vanderbilt (1856–1938) purchased the property in 1895 for use as a spring and fall country residence. The 54-room mansion was designed by architects McKim, Mead, & White and built between 1896 and 1899. It is constructed of Indiana Limestone. Many of the mansion's contents were bought in Europe from wealthy families that had fallen on hard times. Furnishings and construction totaled $2,250,000. After Frederick's death in 1938, the mansion was left to his wife's niece, Margaret Louise Van Alen, who tried to sell it but found no buyers. Franklin Delano Roosevelt suggested that she donate the estate to the National Park Service as a monument to the Gilded Age. In addition to the mansion, the property includes the Pavilion (a former residence turned Visitor Center), a coach house, power station, gate houses, bridges, and the gardens (plus ancillary garden buildings). On December 18, 1940 the site became a unit of the @NationalParkService. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps104 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #vanderbiltmansion #vanderbiltmansionnhs #natinalhistoricsite #iloveny #hydepark #hydeparkny #hudsonrivervalley #hudsonrivervalleynha #smallparksaturday (at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEnOveij2-a/?igshid=9s9eb9xq98jq
