The Willie Browne Cabin site at @timucuannps near Jacksonville, #Florida. Willie worked and lived off this land for over 80 years. Despite living until 1970, he didn't have electricity or running water. He enjoyed the land and surrounding environment just the way it was, unaltered by human progress. In 1969, Willie donated over 500 acres of what is now the Theodore Roosevelt Area to the Nature Conservancy. He died on December 14, 1970. In 1990, the land was given to the @NationalParkService to be part of Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve. His cabin no longer stands, but its location is marked by concrete pillars and a wayside marker. #fl #flhistory #williebrownecabin #timucuanpreserve #timucuanparks #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps102 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #FindYourPark #optoutside #theodorerooseveltarea #jacksonvillefl #jacksonville #nature #jax (at Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzy76l1HFnN/?igshid=p2211p75tske

The Ribault Monument, part of Fort Caroline National Monument (part of Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve) atop St. Johns Bluff near Jacksonville, #Florida. The Ribault Monument commemorates the 1562 landing of Jean Ribault near the mouth of the St. Johns River. Ribault erected a stone column in 1562 bearing the coats of arms of his French King Charles IX to claim Florida for France. Over time, the exact location of the monument and the monument itself disappeared from the landscape. In the 1920s, a movement began in the Florida Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to mark the location of Ribault’s first arrival in the New World. In 1924, a piece of land was donated near present-day Mayport for a new column designed by Florida sculptor Charles Adrian Pillars. After three moves, in 1958, the monument found its permanent home and became part of Fort Caroline National Memorial. #fl #flhistory #fortcaroline #nationalmemorial #timucuanpreserve #timucuanparks #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps101 #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #FindYourPark #optoutside #fortcarolinenationalmemorial #french #ribaultmonument #jacksonville #jacksonvillefl (at Ribault Monument)

Fort Caroline National Memorial, located within @timucuannps near present-day Jacksonville, #Florida, was an attempted French colonial settlement, located on the banks of the St. Johns River. It was established under the leadership of René Goulaine de Laudonnière on June 22, 1564, as a new territorial claim in French Florida and a safe haven for Huguenots. The French colony came into conflict with the Spanish, who established St. Augustine in September 1565, and Fort Caroline was attacked by Spanish troops under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on September 20. The Spanish continued to occupy the site as San Mateo until 1569. The original site of the #fort has never been determined, but some believe it was located near the present day Fort Caroline National Memorial while there is another theory that it existed on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia. The fort today is a reproduction of what it is believed to have looked like. #fl #flhistory #fortcaroline #nationalmemorial #timucuanpreserve #timucuanparks #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps101 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #FindYourPark #optoutside #fortcarolinenationalmemorial #french (at Fort Caroline)
