A remnant of cobblestone paving, which was once the courtyard of a stable dating to about 1796. This can be found in the Rose Garden (entrances on Walnut and Locust Streets) at @independencenps in Philadelphia, #Pennsylvania. Moved forward in time from the Revoluntinary War and hit a few Civil War battlefields on the way home from Williamsburg. This included Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, and Manassas as pictured. Just something about these Kaws statues on the shoreline just got me. ➡️ This spot in general is just interesting. New building (luxury of course cause no one seems to build anything else smh) on a shoreline that is changing pretty quickly. @nycferry is right there so no walk to the G Train I guess. A few foodie options in the area too. Just a nice place to chill. "Dreams of wealth lured the first cattlemen to Montana. The range was open and unfenced, and they could fatten their cattle on the lush bunchgrass and push on to new pastures when the old areas were overgrazed. The main obstacles were buffalo and Native Americans, and by the 1860's both were fast being overcome.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In the late 1870's cowboys drove herds of rangy longhorns up from Texas to the better grazing lands of Montana, adding a Spanish strain to the English shorthorn breeds already established there and greatly multiplying the herds.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ By 1885, cattle raising was the biggest industry on the High Plains, and foreign investors and eastern speculators rushed to get in on the bonanza. As ranches multiplied and the northern herds grew, there came a predictable consequence: overgrazing. This and the fierce winter of 1886-87 caused enormous losses, estimated at one-third to one-half of all the cattle on the northern plains. Many cattlemen never recovered.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The open-range cattle industry lasted only three decades. Few of its pioneering men and women made their fortunes or are remembered today. But from their beginnings has evolved the more scientific ranching of today, with its own risks and uncertainties. In the Old Orchard Museum at @sagamorehillnhs in Oyster Bay, #NewYork are items associated with Theodore Roosevelt and the death of President William McKinley. To the right is a mourning pin for McKinley and to the left is the top hat worn by Theodore Roosevelt at McKinley's funeral, September 1901. McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon F. Czolgosz while he was standing in a receiving line at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 6, 1901. Union Pacific 4012 at @steamtownnhs in Scrtanton, #Pennsylvania. It is known as a 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. It was built by the American #Locomotive Company in November 1941 and retired from service in 1962. The Big Boys were the longest and largest and most powerful steam locomotives in the world. Steamtown's #4012 is 132'-10" long. Twenty-five of these locomotives were built prior to and during World War II. #OnThisDay, March 21, 1963, #Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closed and transferred its last prisoners. The 22 acre #AlcatrazIsland had been home to a federal prison since 1933. Prior to its years as a federal prison, it was a U.S. military fortification (construction began in 1853) and a military prison (1868-1933). It is now a @nationalparkservice site and part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
