#otd, 100 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt died at @sagamorehillnhs, in New York. When he ascended to the presidency in 1901 he was the youngest person to do so and ushered in a progressive era of reform. Part of that wave of reform was his work in preserving the scenic and historic wonders of this country as part of the future National Park Service. In Teddy’s words: “Leave it [wilderness] as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, and for all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American... should see." To me, he remains the perfect example of a progressive American president who worked toward the common good. He is a complicated figure, for sure, but his contributions to enshrining American identity in wilderness are incomparable to any other American politician. Thank you, Teddy. : : #SagamoreHill #findyourpark #SagamoreHillNationalHistoricSite #Sagamore #Roosevelt #TeddyRoosevelt #TheodoreRoosevelt #NewYork #LongIsland #FindYourPark #GoParks #usinterior #experienceyouramerica #americasbestidea #protectpubliclands #travel #protectingparks #americanhistory #natparkexplorer #optoutside #thenationalparkspass #history #monumentsforall #sharetheexperience #nationalpark #nationalparkgeek #ibrakeforbrownsigns #nationalparkobsessed : : Sagamore Hill is probably my favorite “Presidential Home” or “Historical Home” unit in the NPS. The tour is spectacular there and everything is wonderfully preserved. There’s nothing quite like standing in Teddy’s office or Grand Hall and seeing his belongings and books and imagining him entertaining and talking to John Muir in that very room. Today in history: On this day, January 6, 1919, former president Theodore Roosevelt died at @sagamorehillnhs in Oyster Bay, #LongIsland, #NewYork. He was buried nearby at Youngs Memorial Cemetery. In 1880, 22-year-old Roosevelt purchased 155 acres of land for $30,000. He kept 95 acres and sold the rest to relatives. The shingle-style, Queen Anne 22-room home was designed by the New York architectural firm Lam and Rich. Roosevelt moved into the house in 1887 and had originally planned to name the house "Leeholm" after his wife, Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt. However, she died in 1884 and Roosevelt married Edith Kermit Carow in 1886. He decided to change the name to "Sagamore Hill". In 1905, Roosevelt expanded the house, adding the largest room, called the "North Room". Sagamore Hill took on its greatest importance when it became known as the "Summer White House" during the seven summers (1902-1908) that Roosevelt spent there as President. It played host to numerous visits from foreign dignitaries and peace talks that helped draw an end to the Russo-Japanese War. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreny #OptOutside #FindYourPark #smallparksaturday #architecture #archi_ologie #oysterbay #oysterbayny #sagamorehill #sagamoremorehillnhs #nationalhistoricsite (at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B69YT32na3D/?igshid=1iugeao7e3614

The House That Teddy Built
Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. In addition to touring Roosevelt’s Victorian mansion, the Museum at Old Orchard and 83-acres of protected forest, tidal salt marsh and bay beach await.
Roosevelt’s sprawling home near Oyster Bay, Long Island remains more or less intact. Its 23 rooms retain their original furnishings, taxidermy, furniture and miles of books.
During Roosevelt’s time in office, his “Summer White House” was the site for conducting affairs of the state. Roosevelt hosted delegates from Russia and Japan who resolved their conflict and secured a Nobel Peace Prize for the President. The silver candlestick whose flame melted the sealing wax on the Treaty of Portsmouth remains on Roosevelt’s desk.
A smaller house, once occupied by Ted Jr., is now the Old Orchard Museum. The museum traces Roosevelt’s life and career through exhibits and wall displays, including his Rough Rider uniform.A nature trail proceeds through dense woodland, a salt marsh and the waters of Cold Spring Harbor. A walkway leads across the grasses and ponds and onto a small beach with a vista worthy of painting.
It has been 100 years since Roosevelt’s death but Sagamore Hill lives on as an enticing gateway to the past and likely the most vividly personal of the Presidential shrines.
Throughout the spring and summer, Sagamore Hill hosts Astronomy Nights. Events include presentations on the magnificent celestial wonders likely to be seen and stargazing through telescopes about the grounds.

Traveling Out to Sagamore Hill
Last Saturday we took advantage of one of the last beautiful days of summer to get outside, breathe some fresh (non-city) air, and explore somewhere we had never been before. We drove the car out on Long Island to visit Oyster Bay and the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.
For those who don’t know, Sagamore Hill is the country home of former President Theodore Roosevelt. This home was built on a working farm around just before the turn of the 20th century. it is situated on Oyster Bay which is on the northwest side of Long Island outside of Queens which is considered part of New York City.
The drive out to the area was surprisingly easy. We had anticipated much more traffic but were very happy to have a mostly stress-free drive. It was particularly nice as we got within about three miles of the site - we began to drive country type roads reminiscent of rural areas with which we are familiar.
After stopping at the Visitor’s Center we went into Oyster Bay to find some lunch before time for our tour of the home. I was NOT impressed with Oyster Bay itself. There were very few restaurant options and many of them were not open for lunch. We have become very spoiled by having so many options for eating out any time day or night. We ended up buying some Mexican food from a little bodega and taking it back to Sagamore Hill for a picnic.
The home itself is set up on a hill with a fantastic view of the woods. We gathered on the porch to start our tour and I could have sat there all day.
Once inside the home (no pictures allowed) it was interesting to me to compare it to the Biltmore Mansion in North Carolina that was constructed around the same time. Here are two of the richest American families of the time (at least on paper) building these opulent, abodes for their families. Both embraced the newest technologies of the day and were prone to extravagance but they really could not have been more different in ambiance.
Where the Biltmore is full of art, gold, fancy fabrics etc,, Sagamore Hill has a much more homey feel. There are quilts instead of spreads on the beds, there are book stacked in every room and we were told more than once every book was bought with the purpose of reading it. Teddy read one and a half books a day. Edith recorded that every book was purchased because someone had the desire to read it. The Biltmore has a beautiful library but I don’t remember hearing they are were avid readers of the pages.
Sagamore Hill is also full of many of Roosevelt’s hunting treasures. This is not the place for anyone sensitive to animal conservation issues to visit. There are zebra, bear, lion and cheetah rugs. There is a trash can crafted out of an elephant’s hoof and an inkwell crafted out of a rhino hoof. There are also artifacts from his travels around the world throughout. For being the home of a large family, the rooms were rather small and often children shared space with others.
As a dedicated journal writer and blogger, I found it interesting to hear that Edith had written faithfully every day about the events of the day before. When she was approaching death, she burned all those pages. When asked why she would do that, she replied “because it is nobody’s d*** business”. Wow, wonder how she would feel about Facebook and Twitter.
We were not permitted to take pictures in the house. We did follow a nice path through the woods that was put there by the Roosevelts for the purpose of visiting the beach. It is amazing to stop and think about walking through the halls and woods where these famous Americans trod.
The last part of our visit was to the Old Garden home. This home was build by Teddy Jr and his wife after purchasing the land from his mother. This home has now been converted into a Teddy Roosevelt museum that covers his life, his military career, his presidency and his hunts. I did not know much about him other than general facts learned in school, but came out so much more knowledgeable.
Teddy Roosevelt was an enormous advocate for and catalyst for enacting laws to preserve National historic and natural resources. I think he would be pleased with the love and care being shown to his beloved home and land. I think he would be appalled at the steps of the current government to turn their backs on preservation of water, air, forests etc. This visit reinforced what I already knew that we are not being good stewards of what we are blessed with and we are not being aided to do so by the government as the should.
