The Willie Browne Cabin site at @timucuannps near Jacksonville, #Florida. Willie worked and lived off this land for over 80 years. Despite living until 1970, he didn't have electricity or running water. He enjoyed the land and surrounding environment just the way it was, unaltered by human progress. In 1969, Willie donated over 500 acres of what is now the Theodore Roosevelt Area to the Nature Conservancy. He died on December 14, 1970. In 1990, the land was given to the @NationalParkService to be part of Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve. His cabin no longer stands, but its location is marked by concrete pillars and a wayside marker. #fl #flhistory #williebrownecabin #timucuanpreserve #timucuanparks #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps102 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #FindYourPark #optoutside #theodorerooseveltarea #jacksonvillefl #jacksonville #nature #jax (at Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzy76l1HFnN/?igshid=p2211p75tske

A bit of a change of pace - we visited Kingsley Plantation for the Kingsley Heritage Celebration. I opted for just the phone on this trip - and the capabilities of this Pixel 2 still amazes me. 2018 resolution: Get our Vitamin C! This sun-soaked chromogenic phototransparency of a Florida fruit stand was taken by Donald H. Sultner-Welles. 🍊🍋🍑 He began his career as a professional "photo-lecturer" in 1952. He illustrated his talks on nature, art, architecture, and the environment with his color slides. In 1954, Sultner-Welles toured West Germany as a guest of the Bonn government. In 1959, he lectured in Asia under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. He was dubbed the "camera ambassador." 📸📸📸 Constantly adding new material to his collection of slides, Sultner-Welles traveled extensively throughout the United States, speaking to garden clubs, cultural organizations, and students. He also appeared aboard various ships of the Holland-America line. In the 1960s, he expanded his lectures to include a combination of art, words, and music, which he called a "photo-concert." Many documents, photos, notes, and journals he created are in our Archives Center and available to researchers. #FoodHistory #SmithsonianFood #HistoryResolutions #NewYearsResolution #VintagePhotography #PhotoHistory #FLhistory #FloridaHistory #VisitFlorida #FoodStudies #Citrus #1960s http://ift.tt/2EgU6nz

Inside the courtyard of the former Hotel Alcazar, now the @lightner_museum and City Hall in St. Augustine, #Florida. The hotel was commissioned by Henry M. Flagler, to appeal to wealthy tourists who traveled south for the winter on his railroad, the Florida East Coast Railway. It was designed by New York City architects Carrère and Hastings, in the Spanish Renaissance Revival style and built between 1887 and 1889. The hotel closed in 1932. The former hotel was purchased by Otto C. Lightner in 1947. It was added to the @nationalregisternps in 1971. #fl #flhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #architecture #oldhouselove #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #ushistory #americanhistory #exploreflorida #staugustine #staugustinefl #travelgram #roadtrip #historicdistrict #igersstaugustine #totallystaugustine #904staugustine #floridalife #hotelalcazar #lightnermuseum (at Lightner Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwS8tXZHE7E/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gjcu90dax50o

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, #Florida. Construction on the fort began in October 1672 and was finished in August 1695 by the Spanish, who had founded St. Augustine. The fort's walls are constructed from coquina, a sedimentary rock that is composed of fragments of the shells of molluscs, trilobites, brachiopods, or other invertebrates. The coquina was mined locally in quarries. Throughout the early 1700s, the fort resisted attacks from the British, Georgian, and South Carolina forces. In 1763, the Peace of Paris gave Florida to Great Britain and the Castillo was known as Fort St. Mark. That lasted for 20 years, until Peace of Paris recognized independence of the United States and returned Florida to Spain. Florida remained in Spanish hands until 1821 when Spain ceded Florida to the United States. At this point the Castillo was renamed Fort Marion. The fort was proclaimed a national monument on October 15, 1924 by President Calvin Coolidge and in 1935 administration of the fort became the responsibility of the @nationalparkservice. #fl #flhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps101 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #architecture #archi_ologie #FindYourPark #optoutside #staugustine #staugustinefl #castillodesanmarcos #monumentsforall #nationalmonument #fort (at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqoHYOmlSsI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bhm7opcl0xjw

The Moulton–Wells House or Eldora State House, part of abandoned Eldora Village at @canaveralnationalseashore in #Florida. Between 1877 and 1900, as many as 100 inhabitants lived in Eldora. It was a prominent community of orange groves, but after a freeze destroyed most of its crops, it was nearly abandoned and never regained its population. As time went on, most of the buildings deteriorated and fell into a state of disuse and only their foundations and archaeological remains are extant. The only remaining building open to the public today is the #colonialrevival Eldora State House, which dates to 1913. It was also abandoned and neglected between 1977 and 1989. After 1989, a series of stabilization and restoration projects occurred, with the goal of reopening the site as a museum. On November 21, 2001, the house and its three historic cisterns were added to the @nationalregisternps. #fl #flhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps102 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreflorida #FindYourPark #optoutside #canaveralnationalseashore #cana #spacecoast #spacecoastfl (at Eldora State House) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnNJN21BMCL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18azsjx45n4t6
