The interior of Aspet at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, #NewHampshire. The park preserves the home, gardens, grounds, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848 - 1907), one of America's foremost sculptors best known for his monuments to the Civil War and his designs for the US $10 and $20 gold coins. The site is centered around Saint-Gaudens home, Aspet, which was built as an inn about 1817 and subsequently remodeled to suit his tastes after purchasing in 1892. Saint-Gaudens worked there during the summers between 1885 and 1897. Aspet became his family's year-round residence in 1900. It was named Aspet after his father's birthplace in France. The Cornish Colony of artists developed around the area, including painters Maxfield Parrish, Thomas Dewing, and Kenyon Cox; dramatist Percy MacKaye; American novelist Winston Churchill, architect Charles Platt; and sculptors Paul Manship, Herbert Adams, and Augustus' brother Louis Saint-Gaudens. After Saint-Gaudens death in 1907, his wife Augusta sought to make the property a memorial to her husband and as a place to exhibit his art and educate visitors about his work. In 1919, the non-profit Saint-Gaudens Memorial was founded. The trustees operated the Saint-Gaudens site as a museum from 1927 until 1965, when the property and its collections were donated to the @NationalParkService. #nh #nhhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps104 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenewhampshire #architecture #archi_ologie #art #smallparksaturday #saintgaudensnationalhistoricalpark #nrhp #cornish #cornishnh #aspet #FindYourPark (at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJM7ap1jpFH/?igshid=180zzu9t0aphs

Little Studio at @saintgaudensnps in Cornish, #NewHampshire. Built in 1904, it was designed by architect George Fletcher Babb and replaced an older barn in the same location that August Saint-Gaudens used as his design space.Today it is one of two studios that house a collection of his works. #nh #nhhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenewhampshire #architecture #archi_ologie #art #smallparksaturday #saintgaudensnationalhistoricalpark #nrhp #cornish #cornishnh #littlestudio #studio #findyourpark (at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4dxraUgXtV/?igshid=zk5uxhtadrjr

#tombstonetuesday: Created in 1905 as a stage set for a classical-style pageant, the Temple at @saintgaudensnps in Cornish, #NewHampshire, resembles a Roman sacrificial altar. Originally of plaster, the Temple was carved in Vermont marble in 1914 from an adapted design by William M. Kendall of McKim, Mead, and White, architects. It serves as the final resting place for the ashes of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, his wife, son, brother, daughter-in-law, and grandson. #SpreadTheHistory #cemetery #cemetery_shots #aj_graveyards #rememberme #grave #graveyard #graveyard_dead #blog #blogger #travelblog #travelblogger #memorial #mementomori #historygirl #history #taphophile #taphophiles_only #saintgaudensnationalhistoricalpark #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparkservice #nationalparkgeek #findyourpark #cornish #cornishnh (at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B197ctIAbI5/?igshid=1ovb8ydmz2sqr

Yesterday I stopped at @saintgaudensnps in Cornish, #NewHampshire. The trustees operated the Saint-Gaudens site as a museum from 1927 until 1965, when the property and its collections were donated to the @NationalParkService. The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site was authorized by Congress on August 31, 1964. It was renamed a National Historical Park in 2019. This trip was sponsored in part by @mmbuilds. #nh #nhhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps102 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenewhampshire #architecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #smallparksaturday #saintgaudensnationalhistoricalpark #nrhp #findyourpark #cornish #cornishnh #sculpture (at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0zbQ22HBXV/?igshid=1esqjb6pye3dd
