This is truly an amazing photo: The Long Island Motor Parkway (AKA Vanderbilt Parkway) in 1908 with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Built in 1908 and running from Queens to Ronkonkoma, Long Island, historians have called it the first road in the country built specifically for automobiles. The privately built toll road featured overpasses and bridges with a toll of $2 when it opened – limiting the roadway for wealthy men wishing to race their new cars. The parkway was closed and absorbed by the state in 1938. Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The mansion and tiered formal gardens sit on a 211 acre property that overlooks the Hudson River. Frederick William #Vanderbilt (1856–1938) purchased the property in 1895 for use as a spring and fall country residence. The 54-room mansion was designed by architects McKim, Mead, & White and built between 1896 and 1899. It is constructed of Indiana Limestone. Many of the mansion's contents were bought in Europe from wealthy families that had fallen on hard times. Furnishings and construction totaled $2,250,000. After Frederick's death in 1938, the mansion was left to his wife's niece, Margaret Louise Van Alen, who tried to sell it but found no buyers. Franklin Delano Roosevelt suggested that she donate the estate to the National Park Service as a monument to the Gilded Age. The mansion became part of the @nationalparkservice on December 18, 1940. Back in 1910, William K. Vanderbilt purchased 20 acres of land above Northport Bay, where he built his summer house. 🌺🏡 The exquisite mansion eventually expanded to 43 acres, and is one of the few remaining Gold Coast mansions. These Gatsby-esque Long Island homes from the '20s are wrought with sumptuous details, offering an intimate look at the life of the wealthy and privileged during the Jazz Age. 💎💰💵 The incredible metalwork you see throughout was crafted by Samuel Yellin, whose work also graces the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, as well as many other notable buildings and structures. I was really blown away by this place, and I hope you'll enjoy taking a walk with me through one portion of the grounds!
