heyyy I hope it's okay to send an ask! I just wanted to know about your art process, if you got any advise. Because I'm in love with your SH doodles, they're so dynamic and lively and the shading is such a nice accent yet it remains somewhat minimalistic? I'm relatively decent at realism but want to develop my own character in drawing more and I'm wondering how you arrived at yours, did you have a method? Thanks in advance^^

love to talk about DRAWING......

The short answer is that because I want to draw them a lot, and have limited time, I can't be too precious about how the final result looks! So a lack of perfectionism and a desire for speed ends up forcing me to simplify and stylize them. This was an organic process (if you scroll down my art tag you can see I was drawing them with a bit more detail, finish, and care a few months ago - I was illustrating vs what I'm doing now, cartooning).

Ideally when you are cartooning, every line of the character's face is doing work to make them THEM, and to tell a story. No unnecessary lines! I find that story is best expressed through eyes, eyebrows, and mouth (this might be different for you). Those features can and should change shape to express emotion. They are usually what I draw first, to figure out the emotion, and they're what I spend the most time tweaking.

The rest of the features - face shape, cheekbones, nose, forehead, ears, hairline - are less emotive, less 'plastic', they don't change shape much. These are doing work to make the character recognizable. I try to keep them simple and have a few simple rules that I can remember about each character.

(Watson is tricky because of his mustache! I've found that treating it as part of his mouth rather than a distinct piece works best, but even so it makes his face less emotive - which, honestly, works for the character, as he is less demonstrative than Holmes)

I'll usually do a simple underdrawing to figure out what the body is doing - trying to capture the energy of a pose and, again, thinking about what story the body is telling.

Then I 'ink' in the clothing, following the lines of the body and gravity. Victorian clothing is fun to draw, I find that the structure around the shoulders and neckline lends itself to expressive poses. I did a bunch of Victorian clothing studies a few months ago and felt like I built up a 'library' in my head so that I don't need to reference it every time.

Shading is incredibly minimal and quick. In really simple drawings, its purpose is usually to distinguish characters from the background. In more detailed ones, it's to give them a little dimension and focus the eye to the faces.

Every choice I make is in service of readability rather than beauty or accuracy, if that makes sense. So it is quite a different mindset than when you're drawing realistically or painting.

I hope this was helpful! I am a professional artist but whenever I get sucked into a fandom I find myself making leaps and bounds in my craft because I want to draw so MUCH and don't care about making it polished...truly shout out to hyperfixation for the gifts it brings

Nyoka’s prey is the prefect made me do the spit take thing despite having nothing in my mouth. You could be joking but it just made me think of an idea I’ve briefly entertained.

I had a brief idea that my oc-put-in-prefect/mc’s/role being afraid of Nyoka. Just as a joke since most people thirst over him. Think it would be funny especially plus my character isn’t scared of anyone else.

Though decided lore-wise that’s a bit of a stretch plus I think I saw a post from you saying something along the lines of you not wanting to have interactions from other people’s ocs?

So I wasn’t going to send anything but that tag made me laugh and prompted a question.

How does Nyoka see and interact with Tia?

Also I might as well ask while I’m here, do you tag each of your ocs with their names? I haven’t done a proper dive into them so it would help to know if I could just click on their named tags to see all there is for each one.

Or would it be more effective to try looking through your entire blog? (I do worry of losing my place should some sort of loading issue happen if you have it as endless scrolling.)

As for the whole “no OC interaction” thing it’s not as strict as that. It’s mostly just… I don’t want people randomly throwing their OCs into my inbox directly or trying to start up some kind of pseudo-RP. Mainly because I don’t know what to do in those situations. It’s as simple as that 😭 I kinda just get blindsighted and wonder what I’m supposed to be doing. Least of all the fact I don’t know who any of these folk are, so it’s kind of awkward. Others might know me cuz they see art I make, but it doesn’t really extend the other way around. I think folk forget that sometimes.

I personally wouldn’t put someone in that position if we weren’t already close.

THAT SAID, I don’t care what people do with already public posts I’ve made or what they imagine on their own posts/blogs. They can add on or make their lil’ in-character comments on those if they felt inclined to. Draw something even and tag me, I’ll probably be down to see it! I get a kick out of that sort of thing and it feels a bit more appropriate 👍 public space begets public space.

But when it comes to trying to do so directly in my inbox I prefer people not do so. I’ll just not answer.

NEXT! I tag each character with their full names. I’m not always consistent about this, and “twst oc” is just a courtesy tag, but it’s not as useful in terms of finding anything up here. Though, it COULD lead you to their names, which is the better option.

Besides, I have no single all-encompassing “masterpost” that links to every bit of info out there. I don’t really have the patience for that. There are some benefits to leaving things open for interpretation. But if someone wanted to start anywhere, the intro post is as close as one will get. It has all their names up in there!

AND ERRRR... Tia kind of interacted with him in this story. Though, imo, it kind of serves more as a general introduction to Nyoka within the context of the universe rather than something Tia and Nyoka specific. She’s just in the MCs place because me and @/oddberryshortcake always use her in that role. There’s a couple Tia specific things in there but it doesn’t really matter overall since it wasn’t the point.

As for how he treats Tia specifically, it’s not a concept I’ve explored too much. If my brain can’t think of a semi-organic situation for them to cross paths then I kind of just! Don’t. 💀😭 But that also just extends to my issue of not freely talking about Tia much up here. I probably will think of something them specific eventually, but right now it’s just generalized. I shouldn’t keep snubbing Tia like that, but I did enough venting about that situation to last the whole week lol

At this point he just treats her as he would any standard Prefect/MC/Yu/Whoever, which is with no regard whatsoever since he’s never around to begin with. He wouldn’t not know who they are given the Prefect/Grim is infamous campus-wide apparently, but I don’t really have anything too specific lined up at the moment. He just considers both the Ramshackle duo as “prey.” Not literal (…i mean…) but more so in that pedantic way in a similar vein to how Leona refers to them as “herbivores.” It’s not dead literal, just kind of… figuratively denoting a position.

They’re prey. They’re mice. They’re not anything to him. He could swallow them whole. (figurative) So in a way, was I truly joking in my tags? 😳 oooooo

💛Atlas: [Pointing to Asher] Water. 🩵Asher: You can’t just leave it at that. It’s not like if you set a glass of water on the table, I’ll run screaming. I have a fear of drowning, so I don’t like to be submerged in water. You’re never going to catch me out swimming. Probably not on a boat either, while we’re at it. Not taking any chances. 💛Atlas: Fair enough. But you won’t even put your face under the water in the shower. 🩵Asher: That’s because it reminds me of being submerged in water. Anyway, this conversation is making me sweaty, and there just happens to be water on the other side of this fence, so let's change the subject. Next question.

-do they have any pet peeves?

🩵Asher: Oh, Atlas fuckin’ hates mindless small talk, like the kind you use just to fill the silence, or because you awkwardly feel like you need to talk to the person next to you. Seriously, he’ll like you a lot more if you just sit next to him in silence for an hour. 💛Atlas:  Very true. And yet, your record for silence is, what, twenty minutes?  🩵Asher: Maybe. But I don’t make mindless small talk. 💛Atlas: Yeah, I do like listening to you ramble on about your latest obsessions. You get all animated and excited, it’s really cute. 🩵Asher: You’re really cute.

-what are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?

💛Atlas: Uh, I don’t know, what’s in our room besides the obvious? Probably too many electronics. 🩵Asher: Right, between the computer and the switch and my drawing tablet and our phones... 💛Atlas: And your sketchbooks and pencils. How many pencils does someone need? 🩵Asher: I don’t have enough; I’ll tell you that much. Count yourself lucky that most of my art supplies are scattered between Lex’s place and my parents’ house. One day I’ll get it all organized in one place, but that day is not today.

-what do they notice first in a person?

🩵Asher: Hm. That's a good question. What did you notice about me first? 💛Atlas: Your hair, obviously. 🩵Asher: [laughs] 💛Atlas: But no, I would say your eyes. I’d never met anyone with such pure gray eyes before, they’re striking. Your eyes are very expressive too. And you make eye contact with people more than anyone else I know. Like, whenever I talk to you, I always feel like you’re really listening. 🩵Asher: [smiles] I am.

-on a scale of 1-10, how high is their pain tolerance?

🩵Asher: Oh god, mine is probably like a 5, and Atlas’s is probably a fuckin’ 8 or 9. 💛Atlas: I would’ve said 7, but we can go with 8.

-do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure?

💛Atlas: I think my first instinct is freeze, but then probably flight. Depending on the situation, I’ll walk away or hide away. 🩵Asher: Mostly. But with James, you definitely went to fight. 💛Atlas: That was different. I don’t care if people hurt me, but I’m not going to let them hurt the people I love. Ash is definitely more of a fighter than I am.  

-do they come from a big family/are they a family person?

🩵Asher: I don’t come from a big family, it’s just my parents, me, my sister, and my niece, but we are very close. But honestly, family isn’t just about relatives. Chosen family is just as important. When I say my family is the most important thing to me, I don’t just mean them, I also mean Atlas and Lex and Dawn and Phoenix and Aspen too. And Jasper, obviously. 💛Atlas: Exactly. If we’re talking about relatives, I come from a very large family, but I will never see or speak to any of them again, except for Dawn, of course. A few years ago, I never would’ve considered myself a family person, but Ash’s family taking me in changed all that. I’d definitely say I am now. 🩵Asher: I love that.

-what animal represents them best?

💛Atlas: Oh, that’s easy. Ash is just like Jasper, his border collie. Playful and energetic, friendly, intelligent, hardworking, and he loves to snuggle. 🩵Asher: Hm. I think for Atlas, I’d say a deer. 💛Atlas: A deer? 🩵Asher: Yeah, like, you’re quiet and cautious, a bit anxious with a tendency to hide, but you’re also beautiful and sweet. 💛Atlas: You make me sound more like a bunny. 🩵Asher: No, definitely not a bunny. Have you ever come upon a big buck deer? They’re majestic and intimidating, and they’ll kick your ass if they have to. They’re… survivors.

-what is a smell that they dislike?

💛Atlas: Ammonia. 🩵Asher: No one likes the smell of ammonia. 💛Atlas: I know, but when I was a kid, at the end of every school year, we’d have to clean our desks with this ammonia spray. Twenty kids spraying ammonia in an enclosed room. It was awful. I’m sure they had the windows open, but even still, that smell is seared into my brain, makes me want to gag just thinking of it.

-have they broken any bones? if so, how?

🩵Asher: Okay, story time! So, when I was ten? Eleven? Something like that. Anyway, I was dancing around in my room, as one does, and I tripped on a book, one of many scattered around my disaster of a room, and tried to catch myself as I went down. Bad decision. I’ll spare you the details, but the pain I felt in my wrist was horrible. I literally saw stars. And then I almost puked when I looked at it. So, of course, I started screaming for my mom. She came running in, and I told her that I’d broken my wrist. And what did she do? She yanked on it and snapped it back into place! Because apparently, I’d just dislocated it. But, fuck, it hurt. If a broken bone is worse than that, then I hope I never break one. 💛Atlas: I broke a toe once. Stubbed it on the corner of my bed when I was in college. I wasn’t good about taping it up or anything either, so it healed a little crooked.

-how would a stranger likely describe them?

🩵Asher: For Atlas? One word: quiet. How they interpret that quietness varies though. Some people think he’s really shy, others think he’s just aloof. But he’s actually neither. He’s introverted and pensive, sure, but he’s also very warm and enjoys chatting with people if it’s a more meaningful conversation, y’know. Like, when we first met, we would talk for hours and hours. 💛Atlas: That’s true, but you’re such an easy person to talk to. I think that’s what people would say about Ash. He’s just very relaxed and friendly and has a way of putting people at ease. He’s good at connecting with people and getting them talking and making them laugh.  

-are they a night owl or a morning bird?

🩵Asher: Probably night owls, I’d say. Atlas prefers starting his day later and working late, if he has the option. 💛Atlas: Yeah, but these days, it feels like I’m working all the time. But even still, Ash starts his day earlier. I don’t know. I think he’s somehow both. He has no issues with mornings, but he also gets a burst of energy in the evening and sometimes it’s hard to get him to come to bed. 🩵Asher: To sleep, anyway. 💛Atlas: [laughs] Right.

-what is a flavor they hate and a flavor they love?

💛Atlas: Ah, Ash hates vinegar and anything pickled. And he loves warm spices like cinnamon and cardamom. 🩵Asher: Oh my god, and Atlas is fuckin’ backwards when it comes to this. He likes bitter flavors to a strange degree, like super bitter beer and strong coffee and he’ll only eat chocolate if it’s the super dark stuff, otherwise he hates it. He doesn’t like sweets. No sugary drinks or candy or even pastries.

-do they have any hobbies?

🩵Asher: We both love gaming and dancing. Otherwise, I like to draw and spend time with my dog. My favorite is taking him down to the beach to play fetch, he loves it there. 💛Atlas: Yeah, and I don’t know, I like to stay active because I feel like I’m constantly at a desk otherwise. I used to rock climb a lot, but since we climbed Mt. Komorebi, we took a break and never really got back to it, so I pretty much just run and work out at the gym occasionally. And I like to sing. 🩵Asher: Seriously, I wish you could hear him. He has the most incredible voice. 💛Atlas: Aw, thank you.

-boom, surprise birthday party! how do they react to surprises?

💛Atlas: Ash would love it! He’d be so stoked that everyone showed up for him like that. 🩵Asher: And Atlas would probably dump me on the spot if I ever did that to him. 💛Atlas: I don’t know if I’d dump you, but… okay, yeah, I probably would.

-do they like to wear jewelry? if so, what is their favorite piece?

🩵Asher: I don’t think I’ve ever seen Atlas wear any jewelry. 💛Atlas: No, I’ve tried, but I could never get used to it. I’d always end up taking it off by midday. 🩵Asher: I can see that. I wear earrings, but that’s it. I used to wear a necklace that an ex gave me, but I threw it out when we broke up. I wanted to throw it into the ocean, but I didn’t dare to walk out on the dock [laughs] so I tossed it in a dumpster instead. 💛Atlas: I didn’t know that. Which ex? 🩵Asher: Elias. 💛Atlas: Ahh. Yikes. 🩵Asher: Yeah. Anyway. Next question.

-do they have neat or messy handwriting?

💛Atlas: I think we both write fairly neat. 🩵Asher: I think so too. Yours is all sharp angles, but it’s not sloppy. 💛Atlas: Yeah, and you have a strong preference for uppercase letters. Sometimes it’s rushed, but it’s never messy. Actually, I’ve never thought about it before, but I really like your handwriting. 🩵Asher: I like yours too.

-what are two emotions they feel the most?

🩵Asher: [points to Atlas] Anxious. 💛Atlas: All of the time. 🩵Asher: And, hm, we can only pick two? I’d probably go with either introspective or focused. 💛Atlas: That’s probably right. For you, I’d say, passionate or inspired and then maybe playful or energetic or something like that. Okay yeah, passionate and playful.

-do they have a favorite fabric?

💛Atlas: Probably cotton, I guess. 🩵Asher: Yeah, same. I don't know. Never really thought about it, to be honest.

-what kind of accent do they have?

🩵Asher: I don’t know. Do we have accents? I mean, I guess Atlas gets a hint of a drawl when he drinks, it’s pretty cute. 💛Atlas: I do not. 🩵Asher: You do! I never told you because I didn’t want you to get self-conscious and try to stop. 💛Atlas: It’s a good thing I don’t drink often, I guess. 🩵Asher: Whatever. I love it. 💛Atlas: And I love you. 🩵Asher: I love you too.

Here's the art wip, I decided not to point on that because again, it's really only one thing that's not new and the others you'll see briefly, but I already glazed it, so.

hi! is there are reason that you decided that cassette tapes would be john’s chosen form of physical media? how would john organize his music (i.e., genre, band name, release date) and what would john keep his cassettes in? i can imagine him either having stuff in old shoe boxes or a cassette case that he hand-painted himself!

Yes! It's my personal favorite form of media, I'm really partial to cassettes, i think from growing up in the early 90's when it was the norm, so imprinted on my brain. I love mix tapes, jumping up to smash the record button when my fave tune came on the radio, so id always miss the first 10 seconds haha, my first several cars had tape decks. i love Walkmans, it was such a HUGE thing in my life to be able to put headphones on and take my music with me for the first time. I translate a lot of that nostalgia to john. I always imagine him with his Walkman and headphones, or small portable stereo, in bed with all the lights off except the white christmas lights that criss cross his ceiling, Creaky on his chest, listening to the episodes on repeat.

John organizes his music by How Much he Currently Likes A Band, grouped by band name and then oddly enough by album color. (so if he had several cassettes by say, Social D, they'd be next to each other in rainbow or light to dark.) He does most things by color, he's slower at reading and alphabetizing is a bit of a chore and makes him feel self-conscious and stressed. He doesn't mix music and books on tape, they each have their own shelf. He does rearrange a LOT.

Right again re: shoe box and painting the cases! I actually wrote a little snippet of this a long long time ago that didn't make it into the comic, but you can have it now, under the cut.

'Caro eyes a shoe box on the shelf curiously, its covered in stickers, anti fascism and punk rock bands. 'Can i look at this?' they ask, he nods, his back to them. They pull it down and settle it in their lap, lifting off the top to discover... cassette tapes! Oh wait, John did say Maddie recorded their show for him onto cassettes. There were at least 40, all lined up in the order of episodes. Caro pulled one out, the white paper inside the case was filled in with bright colors and shapes, elaborate images of ghosts and snakes and monsters. They pulled out another. A cartoon portrait of the little blond, violet eyes wide at the barrage of brightly colored spirits hovering behind them. 'Is this me?' they ask out loud. John turns to look and freezes. 'Oh….' embarrassed. 'Uh yeah…' 'Wow the art is so…?' they murmur, pulling out another, this one done in greens and blues with metallics. 'Ive never seen anything like these before?' They saw a lot of fanart, but this was different somehow. It felt more personal. Like the person who made them really put their soul into it, like it wasn't just fanart to the artist, but something really deeply important. 'I…um….' Johns face is bright red now..' um…I mean, you know I dont have social media..' he reminds them softly, rubbing the back of his neck. 'Wait.' Caro looks up, he's so flustered now, shuffling his feet, ears on fire. 'These are YOURS? You did these?' Somehow they've forgotten he used to fill up notebooks with colorful drawings, street art and tagging. Liquid letters and cartoon animals with thick black outlines. 'Sure.' Trembling Essence [Extended Demo]:💙Quality of life changes + Q&A.💙

Hello and welcome new followers! To show my appreciation for all the support I've received again, here's one of the Valentines Day concept drawings finished! A big thank you to everyone that has continued supporting this through a like, re-blog, fanart, comment, tip jar, share, etc. :,]

I wasn't expecting it to take as long as it did but I'm very happy with the result and how much I've been improving! I'm not too good at drawing angled faces so being able to get it to look just right made me very happy! :,]

I still have this one to go so hopefully at some point I'll have it done!

Quality of life changes:

*Please note that these changes aren't in the [Extended Demo] yet! It'll be something for me to work on adding and I'll let it be known in a update post!

Now that it's been two weeks of the [Extended Demo] being released, It's time to go over some changes to help the player out when going through the game!

I noticed from comments and playthrough's that certain Bad endings/Neutral story progressions were difficult to find, especially the full afternoon route. I don't want players to feel burnt out from trying to search for everything.

I want to add a check-list menu that shows all the Bad/Neutral endings you can get while playing so it's easier to navigate the game.

2. For those that are new or have been here for some time, entering the cabin with Noah starts Day 3 due to the player(Y/N) being lost in the terrain for 2 and a half days which Noah mentions. Sometimes this can get confusing since some consider it Day 1 while the game considers it Day 3.

It's still up in the air about how I'm going to go on about this but I'm thinking about adding a little notification tab in the upper left corner of the game to notify the player(Y/N) of what day it is in the game to resolve confusion.

3. I talked about this last week but I didn't know until recently that the tags I use for Trembling Essence were very unorganized and hard to search through.

I went through and tried my best to re-organize all of the lore and art about Noah/game posts. I also cleaned up the #Trembling Essence tag since it was flooded with game development posts and not much else. I'm also working on a master post and plan on creating some reference sheets of Noah which will be placed under a different tag! :]

#Get to know: Noah : This will be filled with answered asks and lore dump. Sometimes(?) there's random dev-logs that have lore attached to them too. #TE Updates : This only includes dev-logs/updates about the game and development progress. #Trembling Essence : This tag is mainly used to post fan art / art and anything else in general that might belong here which includes lore posts. I really want searching through the tag to be enjoyable and not filled with a bunch of dev-logs.

Actually, ima just start actually doing this post to get some stuff organized.

First off,

I'm making my interaction now because i didn't really think of one from the beginning.

But to just start off- i make drawings and some other stuff like animation, but i rarely ever do them at times.

At the current moment, i am obsessed with sonic and might draw sonic related stuff a lot, but i also draw my attention to other fandoms too like sonic.exe, possibly pokemon, mickey, fnf, Jsab, and some others and maybe my OCs and AUs, too (of course not in this specific order though).

I mostly use my phone and finger to draw, but there will be times where i draw on my tablet.

I'll probably be active a bit more, but there will be times that I'm not, I'm pretty sure that's obvious, but it's just to let ya'll know n' all. But i might draw on my phone on the weekdays, and in the weekends, I'll try to do a complete drawing on my tablet, because usually that sometimes takes days depending if i get distracted, (though, note there will be times i post some of my art from there since there's a lot of drawings that are kind of a few months old now, or somewhere in 2021 when i did them).

But yea, not too much to say about me, this is just an introduction post that I'll pin for any newcomers, that's all.

when was the last time you cried? Hmm. Last week, though I tear up frequently, usually thinking about how I miss my cats. I lost them both pretty recently.

what sport do you play / have played? I never enjoyed sports. I do enjoy swimming but not in a sports context. I did do gymnastics verrrry briefly as a young kid (maybe 8, 9, or 10 years old?) but I don't think I liked it much, I didn't stick with it.

do you use sarcasm? Not often. Now it's mostly when I'm talking to my coworkers about the silliness of our workplace. I used to be sarcastic frequently in certain fandoms I used to write fic for, but I've left that behind (I don't miss it either.) Am I sarcastic a lot on this blog? Maybe, a little, secretly, in the tags >.> (I don't think many notice my tags, I'm not as vocal in them as I used to be)

what's the first thing you notice about people? Probably their expression, how they're looking at me, and how they talk. I guess this could be called a "vibe" but I think that would be different to different people. When I don't vibe with someone, or vice versa, I think it's they way they talk that stands out to me the most. Some people's tone can seem very off to me, or put me on edge, while rarely others are very easy for me to relax around.

scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. I've enjoyed some thrillers but I don't enjoy the horror genre really, and I always have preferred happy endings (I have a lot of romance novels if that tells you anything).

any talents? I used to write, but I'm not sure I can now. I haven't given it up entirely though. And I used to sketch, and I still can do a decent drawing if I put my mind to it. I miss making art.

do you have any pets? I used to have two cats, I just lost my last cat on May 6. They left a big gap in my heart. I'm not sure I'll ever have cats again, though I will always adore cats the most.

5. "Lies came between them": what are your thoughts on the relationship between Fingon and Maedhros during the fraught period of the Unrest of the Noldor?

As a rule, day to day, if the animosity between Fëanor and Fingolfin is at a 10, the animosity between Maedhros and Fingon is at a 4 or 5. This means that often it's no more than a background tension, an awareness that this friendship is a pointed choice and public act as much as it is a genuine expression of entirely organic affection... But they're both loyal sons, and even more than filial piety and family loyalty they're both convinced that their own side is right, so...

After Fëanor draws the sword on Fingolfin in the king's hall, but before any judgement has been passed down, Maedhros grits his teeth and goes to Fingon to try to smooth over the events of the day, because that is what they do, the two of them. But both their tempers run high - it's not like Fingolfin didn't insult Fëanor back, with impeccable passive-aggression - and they have the worst fight they've ever had. They do not speak again before Maedhros leaves for Formenos. They do not speak while Maedhros is at Formenos, though they both start and stop several letters.

In the lingering shadows of Darkness, Fingon finds Maedhros soaking wet in a stream near Formenos, after the entire family has ridden there pell-mell and while Fëanor is still vanished somewhere with the untempered madness of grief. Maedhros had finally slipped away from his brothers to have a moment to himself, to bathe, and is scrubbing his feet raw where he'd stepped in Finwë's blood unknowing. They end up holding each other and weeping, and promising to see this through (though neither has any idea what "this" is yet, and neither wishes to specify, lest any argument restart).

They don't actually talk anything out until a hospital tent beside Lake Mithrim, though - not the old grievances, not the numerous new ones that have burst up in the interim.

9. Share some headcanons on what the day-to-day of their relationship was like: what were their favourite things to do together?

They really enjoy sparring together, with fisticuffs or wrestling or, preferable to both, swords. There was a while where swords were just an exciting if dangerous new sport, and they regularly competed and did exhibition matches. Then it became increasingly politically fraught for the two of them to be doing so... Not that this always stopped them, because they weren't always wise about trying to maintain the bonds of friendship amid the House of Finwë...

They're both happy to be able to spar once more when united in Beleriand, for all that it's no longer a game at all. After re-incarnation, they'll eventually resume the habit, though it'll be some time before Maedhros can hold a sword without being overwhelmed by soul-searing guilt.

They also both enjoy walking into a fancy event knowing that they are the prettiest motherfucker in the room and have the second prettiest motherfucker in the room on their arm. Maedhros is the one who really makes an art form of personal beauty - he was given natural talent in this direction; he might as well hone it! - and will happily spend 2 hours primping before so much as a family dinner (when not in a constant state of war, that is). Fingon is more casual day to day, but does enjoy dressing up for an event.

19. Share three of your favourite Russingon fanfictions (bonus: tag the authors if they're on tumblr!).

NSFW: Enthroned by @arofili (warning: explicit) is my favorite fic for russingon fealty kink. By which I mean, they have sex on Fingon’s throne and forget halfway through who is melodramatically playing King and who is Liegeman. It’s ideal. Their ability to comfortably switch that is one of my favorite things about this ship, and more fic should portray Fingon as just as horny for the idea of High King Maedhros as Maedhros is for High King Fingon.

justonelastdance is my favorite author in the “Post-Rescue from Thangorodrim” tag, which btw is a GREAT tag for hurt/comfort. They write Maedhros is various shades of extremely fucked up and traumatized frames of mind, but in a way that feels…plausibly impermanent? Some fics portray Maedhros as back on his feet too fast for me (I want whump!) and some as too broken (he was being poetically sarcastic about Thingol’s attempted geopolitics within a year!). With justonelastdance, I get to be the sicko in the window cackling as I watch his worst days, while acknowledging that he has many better days than this over the stumbling course of recovery.

This IS a fandom in which the flexibility of canon begets a glorious sandbox of infinitely varied headcanons, so… Once we move beyond pwp and self-indulgent angst, the only person who gets the characters 100% right To Me is, in fact, Me. Everyone read Celechwes Fixes the Noldor! The title is ironic; they cannot truly be fixed except maybe by millennia of time and slow forgiveness!

23. Tell us about any Russingon WIPS or ideas you have.

I’m not going to do it, because it would require more genuine care than I’m interested in putting into this silly au, but it would be fun to continue this idea from the superhero au. Because what would be fun to write and interesting to read is exactly what would be tricky to write: maintaining a balance at all times between 3 simultaneous stories:

The melodramatic cliche plot of “Hero is captured and recruited by Villain, using amnesia and mind control, and must escape both literally and mentally/emotionally while rediscovering who they are, aided by friends (ft. at least one “I know you’re in there!” fight) and confused by incredible sexual tension with the Villain and getting to see them as more emotionally vulnerable and casually, sympathetically human than usual”, which the general public are witnessing in pieces and generally assuming, as well they should.

The behind-the-scenes where the above is kinda happening, sure, except also it’s an elaborate public act because Maedhros and Fingon have been secretly married for like a decade, they have a house in a decent part of town for their civilian identities and a lab-grown 4yo son and everything; only about 4 people outside the House of Finwë know this and they’re all very trusted friends. It’s obviously the heroes’ job to Save This Day (and Fingon Valiant), but you bet Maedhros also has people working on fixing it asap. His villainous subornment of Valiant includes calculations of how much evil to make him do in order to be both publicly dramatic and genuinely useful for his own schemes in ways he couldn’t ordinarily achieve, but also that Fingon won’t be too angry at him or feel too guilty about later.

The adventure that amnesiac!Fingon is having, which mostly resembles Story 1 because nobody is telling him Story 2, because he’s too amnesiac to know how much to keep secret. He’s going weirdly hard (by trope standards) (which he’s vaguely aware of, though not as they apply to his own life history) on the “sexual and emotional attraction to Villain” part, because he can’t remember any facts about his life but he still intuitively recognizes Maedhros as “most favorite, trusted-ish person in the world”, and Maedhros is at some point going to swear Fingon to absolute secrecy then little Ereinion to see him, because when you’re 4, there’s a big emotional difference between “Dad’s not coming home for a few days because he’s on a work trip fighting/saving aliens in outer space” and “Dad’s not coming home for a few days even though he is in the city and you might see him on the news; he just doesn’t remember you right now.” Better to let Erein see him, with the amnesia explained, and get some good reflexive Dad Hugs in.

I think I’d mostly write it in Fingon’s POV, so Stories 1 and 2 are implied in the background. The “I know you’re in there!” fight would probably be with Fingolfin, because it has to be someone so badass that Fingon cannot fight only to disarm and disable, even when his opponent is doing that; it’s kill or surrender—and Fingon is very, very, good in a fight. But he won’t kill. Maedhros Phoenix sent him out with orders to “Do whatever you have to do in order to [crime]”, which technically does include killing, especially of someone trying to stop him from [crime]—but Fingon hasn’t killed anyone but willing minions of Morgoth since the Battle of Alqualondë, and a little amnesia and light mind control isn’t going to make him start now.

Karlach the Half-Dragon Triton

Keeping this super simplified, but I'd love to see its potential, so if anyone wants to try, tag me! It doesn't have to be perfect, it doesn't even have to be better than me, if you just want to practice, or do a different style

Finished collection and old post with some details and poses on the ones that didn't get finished

Karlach was given an electrical engine by Zariel — which did okay in Avernus, but has problems with arcing and shorting underwater. The only reason she's survived it is because of her draconic parentage. However, her horns and tail have contributed to Wyll's belief that she's a devil. Because the refugees not seeking answers in Moonrise Towers can just sail around the Abyssal Reef, she'll have to wait until they reach the city to get her second upgrade. She won't have to return to Avernus, but as it is — despite finally making it back — she can't live in her underwater hometown, and will have to settle for a surface city until she can get her engine shored up. If you've seen Wyll's post, his choice to spare her makes them mirror each other in not being able to return home — Wyll, a (former) human bound to the sea, and Karlach, a triton, bound to the land.

I think I had the idea to give her an electric engine that made her shock like an electric eel right away. I wanted to keep some of her tiefling characteristics, even if she was a new race, and the bronze dragon is both amphibious and has electric resistance.

Actually achieving this was a doozy — her canon design has a lot of details like the straps, tattoos, and notable burn scars. Burn scars weren't realistic for my skill level or this style, so I decided to give her a lichtenburg marking instead. Lichtenburg figures are branching fractals that form as the result of high electricity, and can leave markings called 'ferning' on the skin of people hit by lightning.

It was... a lot. It's branching and branching and branching, smaller and smaller, and organic shapes... Getting it the right texture was hard, and it looked like a great floral tattoo or something, if not a proper lichtenburg figure 😅 It wasn't until I decided to add the cyan like electricity was still burning and coursing through it that I think it really pulled together.
