The Evils of Generative AI

Posted this on my Instagram and thought I would share here too.

I know most of you follow me for the cute and colorful animal portraits, and I am not stopping creating art. But I am irate about the state of the world and will use my platform to discuss the uncomfortable realities that negatively affect me personally, and everyone I know. This is a topic I am passionate about, and I will not keep quiet about it; complacency and apathy are the death of creativity and of our livelihoods, so I will continue to educate about and fight against this.

Copyright Infringement

Generative AI takes the work of millions without permission, license, or compensation. All creative works are copyrighted the moment of their creation, and using them in this manner is unethical. GenAI would not even have content to produce if it wasn't stealing millions of copyrighted material.

2. Marginalized Groups

There is a significant overlap between artists and marginalized groups. LGBTQ, Bipoc, neurodivergent and those with disabilities are disproportionately affected.

3. Environmental Impacts

Generative AI uses a disproportionately large amount of electricity and water to generate content, and has a detrimental effect on the environment.

4. Loss of Jobs

Artists, musicians, writers, authors, photographers, comic creators, linguists, translators, actors, voice actors, animators, graphic artists, designers, and other creative professionals have lost or will lose their jobs because of generative AI. GenAI steals from these individuals and then creates content that undermine them and their careers.

5. Cognitive Decline

When you outsource critical thinking to a machine, you will lose the ability to think for yourself. Cognitive decline and loss of creative thinking skills is a serious side effect of AI.

6. Misinformation and Harm

Generative AI is prone to something called "hallucinations" where it will completely make up something false just so it can have something to output. This has resulted in misinformation in published AI books and articles, as well as weird artifacts in images. False information can have detrimental effects.

7. Loss of Humanity

Art is a human achievement. The purpose of art is to share your life experience, emotions, and ideas with others through your creations. Using GenAI to spit out material completely misses the point of creating art, it lacks the human touch. Art should never be commoditized. Art is not about making money fast as the expense of humanity.

edgy assassin protagonist coming back to the fantasy slums they grew up in (orphaned, of course) only to find out it's been gentrified. what used to be a shady bar just called "the pit", full of assassins haggling for the price of hits and fences pawning stolen trinkets, is now a bandit-themed fancy restaurant called "the cloak and dagger" where they sell overpriced burgers with little knives running through them to keep all the ingredients in place

How long on average do you spend writing 1 chapter?

As prev, it really depends. Some times it's a week between work and life. Some other time is less if I have time and an idea that consumes me. Other time is... A month. Multiple months. It's a hobby I'm not here on deadlines. It comes when it comes.

How long do you spend editing?

Less than I should, most likely. English is not my first language. But again it depends. I re-read everything and try to correct what I can. Some times it's a re-reading, other times it's a rewriting. Depends on the mood. I should spend more time or ask for a beta-reader honestly but I'm horribly vulnerable when it comes to prose, the idea of a beta scares me. (my irl friends who know I write fic discovered it because they saw it here, not because I told them. HI COLLIE)

Favourite thing to write?

Dialogue all the way! I love dialogue. It comes from me having learnt narratology and creative writing as screenwriting for comics, really. But I love how much it reveals of characters. The lack thereof is fascinating too. ... I didn't study Languages without a fascination for communication.

Character studies, friendships and sibling relationships (it fascinates me, as an only child)(Not that I wish I had a sibling)

Hardest thing to write?

Everything else, LOL. My biggest fatal point is be concise and not to lose myself into details. One-shots under 2k words, LOL. (and a lot else, but I tend to severely downplay myself and my work, I won't do it)

Fic/story you are most proud of and why?

As prev, I'll go with three.

The Only Possible Choice > F!Mahariel/Morrigan, there's a reunion after Fort Drakon. I like the way the tension and chemistry turned out.

Distance > F!Lavellan/Cullen. It's an epistolary after Trespasser, I liked writing it, I liked the second chapter which is not epistolary but full of loneliness and angst. I'm considering giving it more chapters.

Home Was Never on the Ground > F!Lavellan/Cullen, a retelling of DAI. It's full of flaws, I didn't plan anything and there are incoherences here and there (namely: Radha wasn't planned from the start, LOL). I'd gladly rewrite it with a more consistend plan, but it's the first thing I wrote in prose after YEARS of nothing. I'm proud of it, I'm proud I did it and I'm proud of having it finished.

How long on average do you spend writing 1 chapter?

It really depends! These days it's about a month on my main long fic😩but I was able to smash out a 16 chapter fic in 7 weeks this spring. When I first started working on the long fic I did about 1 chapter a week for a year straight, but as the story grew more complex it dropped to two weeks and now it's a month.

How long do you spend editing?

It's hard to say because I kind of edit as I go, barring a final readthrough. But a lot of what I do is editing!

Favourite thing to write?

Like prev, it's banter and romantic comedy. Figuring out the specific chemistry between two LIs is my favorite and comes very naturally to me!

Hardest thing to write?

Big military set pieces, politics, heavy angst. I can do it! I just need to research a lot. Sera. Cole. Solas. sldfkjsldfkj

Fic/story you are most proud of and why?

I can't choose between my darlings so I'm posting all three!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my big fat fic that's consumed my brain for two years running, In the Shattering of Things (WIP, E, Cullen x Trevelyan, Hawke x Trevelyan, multiship). The story has consumed my brain and I'm extremely proud of all 478k words. It's somehow both a slow burn, a fast burn, an epic, a tale of grief, one of second chances and about making mistakes. It contains both my earliest fic writing and my best writing and two original characters (Rose Trevelyan and Garrett Hawke) that I promise will feel real.

My fic Instead Came Your Arms (Complete, Exiled Alistair x f!Hawke, E, DA2) is the most recent 'favorite child', written for an exchange. I've said this before, but I wanted to smash these two broken people together like cupcakes. There's banter, political intrigue, grief, action, romance, smut and a happy ending. It's the first big chaptered thing I've ever actually finished and I couldn't be prouder! My matchmaking moms AU fic, Kiss Me Moonstruck (WIP, Garrett Hawke x Rose Trevelyan, E, DA2) is my attempt at a satirical fish out of water romantic comedy. This one is pure fun, a story of aggressive compliance, and a bit of a challenge to see how many shenanigans I can subject them to without breaking them 😎. Garrett and Rose have immaculate chemistry, the entire DA2 gang is there too and the moms might just be my favorite part.

Anishinaabe Mermaid!

This was recommended over on my TikTok! In Anishinaabe myths there are Nibiinaabe, water spirits that have human torsos and fish tails! They are also very shy and easily startled. I based this design on Anishinaabe/Ojibwa jingle dresses and rainbow trout.

well I've been planning to do sketches of my canon da worldstate, and the grand plan must get started from scratch... after a whole year of cullamell i must remind you and myself that nellistair is the canon pairing 😂 exploring alistair's features and the dynamics between them two has been challenging yet fun...

aaand I'm thinking abt the homage to preacher's daughter album cover... but i think i can add something more to it... might be a companion piece of the "harrowing failed" solo cullen...
