Lucky Wizard is such a delight to work with! She is very communicative and I'm always astounded at how fast she is able to crank out such stunning pieces like the above. She did all of the art in Swept Away and was able to perfectly portray the style I had in mind. All of her art shows a love and care for the characters she is portraying, especially in the facial expressions.

Ohhhh tell me about Post Blight Shenanigans 🤩

Post Blight Shenanigans!

In hindsight I really should have started writing it in earnest before I started ATWFD because trying to handle two Dragon Age longfics at once is a bit much, and this is a shorter story so it would have been finished sooner.

Anyway, the story is a straight-up sequel to DA:O with a Tabris HoF who made Alistair king. It's set immediately after the game, while they try to get to grips with how to run a country and clear up after the mess the Blight made of the countryside. There's politics, scheming, romance, Fereldans being Fereldan, and of course, Rosslyn Cousland is there. In this version of the story she became the spearhead of the rebellion against Loghain, which kept him busy enough for Alistair and Tabris to slip through the cracks and save the world. It has no title, but I've written 38k+ words of a plan and I know how it ends. Here's a little snippet beneath the cut:

"No, you don’t understand, I almost kissed her."

Alistair sprawled on an overstuffed velvet sofa, one hand thrown over his face to hide from the pitying looks being levelled at him by his friends. It had been an hour since he left Rosslyn, just enough time for him to flee to Leliana’s apartment near the chantry, but her image still loomed in front of him with perfect, searing clarity. The most beautiful thing he ever beheld.

"Did she look like she wanted you to?" Leliana asked, and he could hear amusement behind her curiosity.

"She’s not interested." He groaned. "I legged it before I could embarrass myself. More than I already did, anyway."

Thea snorted. "So you’re finally ready to admit you’re giddy on her then?"

"Andraste’s knickers, of course you’re not going to let this go. Fine. You were right. She’s so… she’s…"

His mind scattered like sunlight through a spray of water, to images of Rosslyn dancing, training, knelt on the floor of her brother's hall with nothing but defiance in the bow of her head. The way her mouth curled up in the left corner when he made a joke. But he stopped himself there, with another earnest groan, because that thought only brought him back to the near-confrontation in his office, to the question of how soft her mouth might be, and whether she would have kissed him back. She might have leaned into him, twined her fingers into his hair -

He cursed. He might not have much – or anything – in the way of practical experience, but had heard and saw enough of Thea and Zevran’s relationship on the road to fill in blanks, no matter how he had tried not to for decency’s sake.

"But this is adorable!" Leliana cried. "That day in the glade was not wasted, I see. But what makes you think she’s not interested?"

"She told him to piss off when they were still back in Highever."

A gasp. "You tried to approach her?"

Heat flushed his face, indignation a low swoop in his stomach that drove him back to sitting. "Of course not!"

is a loosely canonical chronicle of the events of Dragon Age: Origins featuring a canonically impossible Warden and a F!Amell/Alistair pairing, which results in some familiar situations resolved in unfamiliar ways.

It is fully pre-written (by myself, over the course of the past seven years) and fully illustrated (by the exceptional @vjatoch), and is being published in a serial format with weekly updates.

Giving some attention to my poor Rook, Priscilla. Not her fault I was bitter with the game, I actually love her and I want to paint her! We also have a Neve!

Sleepy time before Kevin arrived, Cullen has been promoted to now double body pillow, he's very happy about it. (started this with the bad inking brush, I'm not redoing what I did so the lineart will be a mess. But it's the year I let go of perfectionism)

Raina-not-Raina in the Whale AU, I just miss her portrait and her character design is finally done!

More Whale AU with the girls being so friendly, so intimate, basically cousins.

I'm probably upping my fully original content this year (hopefully) and I hope you won't mind. I just miss working on comics and I hope I'll have more time to do it. :)

Okay.....

So. I didn't play much Veilguard. I got about six hours in before I decided the game wasn't for me. So I admittedly didn't meet most of the NPCs. BUT.

I did read Tevinter Nights.

And some of the most interesting characters were the Antivan Crow characters. (And Neve Gallus, but that's a fix-it fic for another day.) Lucanis, in particular, really seemed to have something going for him that wasn't followed up on in the game, as far as I know. So I thought why not, okay, let me see if I can do something with that. And I think I dig him in his TN iteration??? It's smart, weird, deadly, little bit sarcastic? So this fic is me figuring all of that out. No Spite, just a guy with a bizarre ass moral compass having some sort of crisis of conscience. And Illario isn't a villain but just a concerned relative. (I could go on about how BioWare did Illario dirty but I will refrain.)

Few more bits of context: The end of his TN story, "The Wigmaker Job" by Courtney Woods, implies that since he's gone rogue and killed a bunch of Tevinter nobles at a party, he's caught the notice of some unsavory sorts with a lot of power in the Imperium. So I've had them kidnap him and hold him in a super secret Tevinter prison after faking his death. My non-rook OC, Meira, working for the successor to the Inquisition (cooler name pending) has been assigned to the team to break him out. It's her first mission and she was supposed to stay with the boat (she was the one who sailed the rescue team in) but some shit went sideways and she had to replace a downed party member. So anyway this is their first meeting LOL

Meira turned, only to be slammed against the wall. Gasping, she recoiled, but there was nowhere to go. Lucanis had her shoulder pinned with one hand. In the other glinted a piece of jagged metal. It looked homemade. For someone who seemed so emaciated, he was unbelievably strong.  His long hair cast a pall over his features, contorted with rage. He pressed closer, so that their noses nearly touched. “Who sent you?” The blade was cold, edged against the soft flesh below her jaw. Great way to slash someone’s throat and watch them bleed out — she’d heard that in training. Meira instantly forgot everything else she’d never learned. “The— the Inquisition!”  “The Inquisition disbanded six years ago.” The shiv pushed harder. “Try again.”  Who else was there? Divine Victoria’s secret agents didn’t have the same name recognition. Varric? No, he couldn’t know Varric, could he? No no no, Lucanis was nobility or something close— important Antivans wanted him home. “Your grandmother! Caterina.”  “Everyone knows who my grandmother is,” Lucanis spat.  Shit. Shit shit shit shit. “Y-your—” She couldn’t remember the name of his cousin for the life of her, couldn’t remember much about him at all, except that they did look a little alike. The man was suave and well-kept but carried himself with a deep sadness. Lucanis was a harder, rearranged version: all angles and dark, soulless eyes, breath foul from too many nights in this godless place. “Cousin.”  The words came from between gritted teeth. “I have many cousins, little girl.”  Maker, he was going to kill her, wasn’t he? Because she couldn’t remember his stupid cousin’s name. Even though said cousin stood in the briefing room and spoke for half an hour. stressing the importance of bringing this monster back alive, voice tinged with dismal hope. Meira could see him, the black doublet accented in scarlet, speaking bits of praise for his long-lost relative. Highly skilled, was one. Deadly precise was another. Not easily deceived yet a third. Perhaps prone to overzealous self-protection. Paranoid? Had he been saying Lucanis was paranoid? Maybe likely to slice any would-be rescuer to ribbons? So if you still need to convince him to trust you, just tell him— “Wyvern’s tooth!” Meira shrieked.  A code phrase. She’d thought it silly at the time.  Lucanis blinked once, then several more times. The hard edge of the blade eased, and he stood back, lowering his arms.  “Illario sent you,” he said softly.  “Yes! Illario! That is definitely his name!”  “Illario sent you?” He sounded incredulous now, but the kind of incredulous that struck someone when the wild truth in front of them was yet undeniable.

I read this story long ago all in one sitting. It absolutely gripped me, tugged at my heartstrings, and wouldn't let me go. A Cadash/Solas/Varric Tethras rare pair, you have to give this a try.

Rating: E Pairing: Female Cadash/Solas, Female Cadash/Varric, Varric/Solas Chapters: 13/13 Length: 42,657 words Summary: Maria Cadash hung up the Inquisitor's mantle for the Viscountess' crown, but she's unable to stop her desperate and impossible struggle to stop Fen'Harel from destroying the world both her husband and daughter inhabit. The fact Varric, Maria, and Solas are all madly in love with each other just means she may have enough of an edge to win this game.

WIP wednesday: ((what you gonna do when there's blood in the water))

@crabs-with-sticks tagged me for WIP wednesday. I always do this, whether I am tagged or not, but it is certainly nice to be asked!!

So, I present more band AU madness. I wasn't sure what to post but @theluckywizard requested this file name, which is "viago punches illario."

624 words | gen audiences | lucanis x vero (and some implied viago x vero pining)

llario likes to make comments. Just little digs at first. Vero thinks he could be funny, if he were less of an asshole. But Lucanis loves his cousin – doesn’t like him, maybe, but loves him – so Vero puts up with it. With the sarcastic comments about strays and sugar daddies, the innuendo and the veiled insults. “Just ignore him,” Teia says. “He’ll get bored eventually.”  Vero would like him to get bored a lot faster, but they never say much. They’ve put up with worse than some sarcastic rich kid who thinks he’s the gods’ gift with an electric guitar. And Lucanis wants them there, and Viago’s alright, mostly, even if he still calls them the merch kid half the time. He does it with a twinkle in his eye now sometimes, like they’re sharing a joke, and that’s not so bad.

It comes to a head after Illario lets himself into the apartment – because he has a key from long before Vero moved in – and finds them sleeping tangled together in Lucanis’s bed. After that, he starts calling them Lucanis’s teenage lover, and a few other, less complimentary things. 

It’s after rehearsal and they’re drinking beers in Viago’s garage. It’s probably too early for it on a Sunday morning, but that’s how these things sometimes go. Lucanis in the house – making coffee, probably, knowing him – when Illario looks at them with that sharp, predatory glint in his eye.

“You know, when Lucanis is done with you, you could always make a career out of it,” he says, casually, like he’s talking about the weather outside. “I'm sure there are plenty of rich men who'd pay good money for someone with your experience. Maybe even Viago, if you can get him drunk enough.”

Vero’s fingers tighten on the neck of their bottle, and they feel the heat rise in their face. Illario doesn't know – can't know – and Vero doesn't do that any more, hasn't for months. But …

“Illario,” Teia says, “what the fuck.”

“What? I’m just saying what everyone’s thinking,” Illario sneers. “I mean –” 

Vero isn’t entirely sure when Viago got out of his seat, except that then his gloved fist is colliding with Illario’s jaw and the other man is reeling backwards, tripping over one of the amp cords so that he lands on his ass on the cement floor. 

“Don’t you ever fucking talk that way about a member of this band,” Viago snarls. Vero has seen him annoyed before; irritation, in fact, sometimes seems to be his default state. But they’ve never seen him properly angry, all cold fury and storm-grey eyes as he shakes out his hand. “Get the fuck out.”

Illario scrambles to his feet, rubbing at his face where Viago hit him. “All this over some –”

Viago clearly isn’t interested in hearing the rest of that sentence. “Out, or I swear to the Maker I will break that stupid, overpriced guitar over your fucking head.”

“I think you should go,” Teia says, and Illario huffs a sigh, going over to put his guitar in his case.

Lucanis comes back with his coffee just as Illario opens the garage to step out onto the street. “Mierda” he says. “What did he do now?” 

“Tell you later,” Teia promises.

Vero looks at them – Viago still absently rubbing his knuckles as Teia fetches ice from the chest freezer in the corner, Lucanis who stands in the door that leads to the house with an expression somewhere between bemused and befuddled.

“Thanks, Vi,” they say, their voice soft.

He grimaces. “Don’t mention it.”

“I think we might need a new guitarist,” Teia says, and Viago’s expression shifts to something – something Vero can’t quite place. Resigned, maybe.

“Yeah,” he says. “You’re probably right.”

new things I tried:

New fandoms! BG3 got me back into writing for fun before DA reassumed its throne, and I published HotD for the first time, too!

Smut! I published five smut fics on AO3, one on Tumblr, and another that will probably not make it out of the docs I'm gonna be real.

Long fic! Technically I've tried before, but writing Var Shiral'vhen with @theshirallen has been a pretty new experience as someone who mostly writes oneshots. It's been fun, though!

fic I spent the most time on: Var Shiral'vhen on the basis of it being a long fic. For one shots, probably The means by which art is made due it being my first attempt at Solian smut and that ship being very dear to me (and it was originally started back in like 2022).

fic I spent the least time on: I wrote Stronger Where it Breaks (Veilguard spoilers) after I beat DA4 in a short space of time. They will learn was also written similarly quickly.

favorite thing I wrote: I'm going to list multiple answers bc I deserve it.

I think it might be the unpublished Var Shiral'vhen chapter "Rift test take 2" just because I adore the Solas/Ian conversation in that chapter. It really encapsulates what I find fascinating about their dynamic, put them in a room together and they will start vibing even when I wasn't planning on it.

(Veilguard spoilers in the link) They will learn, a fic I mostly wrote for Joly but ended up getting more attention than I expected on Tumblr! I really enjoyed working with Elvhenan worldbuilding and I'm looking forward to doing more with the OCs I started crafting for the purposes of the fic.

(Veilguard spoilers in the link) The shape of you, a really abstract fic that's sex but also isn't sex. It was more a picture than words in my head so writing it down was difficult, but I enjoyed how it turned out esp since I didn't spend too long on it (it was like two sessions of writing).

favorite thing(s) I read:

(Veilguard spoilers in the link) keep my body from the fire (Solas x Felassan) by Almalexiasgf. I loved the depiction of Solas's [redacted] and Felassan's handling of it. It captured everything I love about the new lore surrounding the elves in DA4.

deus proditus (dame aylin & ketheric thorm) by @darethshirl. Such a neat exploration of these characters and their hostile relationship to each other, their love of Isobel, divinity/mortality. Highly recommended!

The History in our Skin (nb!lavellan & keeper deshanna) by @theshirallen. You were a fool if you thought I wouldn't include Joly in this. I love the pain and the peace in this, the impossible choice Deshanna saddles Ian (still a child but in choosing becomes grown) with. "There is no right answer" but only because the world is hostile to everything they are.

it ends, or it doesn't (felassan & an ensemble cast) by @dreadfutures I'm still making my way through this one (VG put a huge dent in my reading habit I carefully built over 2024 lmao) but I love Blue's Felassan POV and the worldbuilding they do for the Dalish/ancient elves. It's so inspiring, and the mystery is so good.

Mien'Harel (solas/felassan, solas & ensemble) by @bodysnatch3r Again, making my way through it, but Matty has such a great use of language and the worldbuilding is so good. I'm going to have my heart broken (more) when I continue I'm sure, but I'd highly recommend checking this one out.

these violent delights (Zevran x f!Tabris, Lucanis & Zev/Warden - Rated T) by @inquisimer. I love love love the Zev/Tabris pairing in this, and the playing off Lucanis is also excellent. I'd highly recommend it for its intrigue and character dynamics!!!

Var Shiral'vhen (Solas x Nonbinary!Lavellan - Rated M) An adaptation of Solas and Ian's love story as well as Thora's journey as Inquisitor. About finding love in impossible places, undoing the damage the world has done to you, building trust from the ashes of other people's fires.

They will learn (Solas & Original Elvhen Character- Rated G) Veilguard spoilers. The world is new, and so are the people. Solas meets a new invention and sees the beauty and horror of creation.

The shape of you (Solas x Nonbinary!Lavellan- Rated E) Veilguard spoilers. Solas asks Ian a difficult question that Ian has no trouble answering.

Five, Seven, Five (Solas & F!Cadash - Rated G) Veilguard spoilers. Set in Inquisition. After a visit to Cadash thaig, Thora is inspired to write poetry after a lifetime of reading it. She shares it with Solas, as she shares everything with Solas.

Stronger Where it Breaks ( Solas x Nonbinary!Lavellan- Rated G) Veilguard spoilers. On Ian's suggestions, Solas takes up journaling to deal with some of his issues.

Pawn Takes King ( Solas x Nonbinary!Lavellan - Rated E) Technically Veilguard spoilers for the game's hub/home location. After a game of chess results in a rare victory, Ian claims his spoils.

The means by which art is made ( Solas x Nonbinary Lavellan! - Rated E) After Solas discloses his preference for bottoming, Ian tops him for the first time. It is not a night without its setbacks.

This week I start it. Nasty day, I need something happy.
