I'm on a time-tracking rewatch. 2x03 was 11 weeks before opening, and 2x05 was 6 weeks before opening. You're telling me he didn't tell Sydney for a whole month that he was hanging out with a friend who's a girl? It's not like he was keeping it a secret from everyone because Natalie knew early on he was spending time with Claire.

Whether platonic or a business partnership, if Syd and Carmy were building a friendship, it's strange that he didn't tell Sydney at all.

The first time she touched him and he actually registered her touch, because the previous time it was in the middle of a fight, he wasn't thinking.

I just find it funny that that was his word choice as she was taking off her jacket... he could have said: "Damn it!" or cussed in any other way, but he looked at her straight in the eye, as she was removing her chef's whites right in front of him and went: "Fuck me!". No touching, though. OK, moving on.

Season 3

In S3 it's like they are deliberately trying not to touch:

03x01 - Tomorrow

Avoiding contact, but close. In every sense, which is a rapport they maintained throughout the whole season, till Forever.

03X10 - Forever

So what we have here is literally Sydcarmy being OUT OF TOUCH with each other, very clearly and graphically depicted by Storer throughout S3, and an even clearer decrease in contact if we take into account all 3 seasons.

It's not like they touched so much before but we can clearly see the decrease in contact.

The physicality wasn't there, and neither was the best verbal communication to compensate for the lack of it.

They were growing apart and not talking about it.

There was less contact in every sense, not just physical but the physical manifestation was just ANOTHER manifestation of their distance, which obviously was also emotional.

So, my guess is that in S4 we will either get a SIMULTANEOUS recovery in the physical aspect and better verbal communication because this was rock bottom and there's no way but up from here, plus the CRISIS of Syd probably quitting will force a change

OR

What we will see FIRST is a PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION of non-verbal communication + a PROGRESSIVE IMPROVEMENT in verbal communication.

Because they will either get out of the woods all at once, during an EPIC argument or any situation where emotions are running high and they have NO FILTER, which is what I hope happens.

OR

The change will be progressive, slow but sure, and the full manifestation of it will be explicit by eps 4x9/4x10, which may or may not be the series finale, as S5 is not confirmed yet but by the time S4 is out, it may be... who knows? If this is how Storer decides to go about it, then the PHYSICAL aspect will be the first thing we see, the non-verbal shift, and THEN the verbal communication will follow and they will start using words that actually matter, FULL SENTENCES, as opposed to leaving most things unsaid or "saving it for later" because there may not be a later to talk about anyway.

the bear episode 2 of season two is so chalk full of important references and motifs and symbolization for sydcarmy’s relationship as well as their individual character arcs from sydney’s conversation with her dad to carmy meeting claire again (and giving her the wrong number) and this wall that’s built up between them this way. LOL u thought that was it no you also have the chef whites conversation, the introduction to the I’m sorry sign and sydney volunteering new information about sheridan to carm AND him attempting to ask about her dad before she cuts him off. it’s funny right that carmy asks about her dad and her dad asks about carmy and neither person gets a clear answer from syd? it seems so deliberate that these two don’t meet this season anyways-

and then this isn’t episode two but shut up you have the tearing down the wall motif and how unsettled sydney is about the fact that carmen does that without her and what “tearing down walls” usually symbolizes is immense bc she wanted to be there ! she wanted to be there with him ! and he did it without her bc he wanted it to be done when she got there ! he thought she would be happy with a finished product instead so he did the ugly process it takes to get there. he wants it to be perfect for her so much so that he leaves her out of a say in that. he thinks she wants things she actually doesn’t. she cares about this restaurant in every way it is, ugly, broken down, health hazard and all.

aaaaand what else does carmen consider a work in progress damn near a lost cause? himself! so does he think that she doesn’t deserve to have to stick around and watch while he figures himself out while he “fixes” himself up? does he not think she can handle it? does he want to be perfect for her even though that’s not what she wants?

but no “this is what you wanted and it’s what I’m giving you” because it’s gone over his head at this point that there’s love in the process. there is an understanding in the process, there is a merging of souls in this process of building a literal restaurant from the ground up. carmen focuses so much on making everything perfect for sydney that he forgets that’s never something she asked for. not perfect just *better*

and under that table, less than an hour before opening he finally fucking understands how to slow time down. if the food’s bad they’ll work on it. if no one comes then no one comes. it’s okay. it’s okay if it’s not perfect because we’re doing this together and that’s what matters. what matters is this moment where I get to tell you I’ll be here for you. where I get to tell you I care about you every way you are, full stop.
