cant eat rice anymore without a multiple-hour knockout seemingly caused by blood sugar spiking/crashing or autoimmune response, followed by a multi-day hangover. even with fat + protein, it doesn't change anything. im so fed up with managing food at this point im considering just not eating anymore. it appears inevitable that the autoimmune disease will progress until every molecule causes some sort of illness
#blog#it would be less trouble and less annoying to just starve to death#if you try to give me advice i will block you unless you have a medical degree in autoimmune disorders or a related field

I would be delighted if linguistic customs shifted to where I can say "I'm having a really rough time with my [lifelong degenerative] conditions" and people didn't jump in with
"have you been exercising?"
"what you need is vitamin _"
"I've got the perfect home remedy"
"just go for a walk"
or my personal hell "it's those medications you're on! You're on too many and that's why you feel bad".
#Don't comment on people's medications unless asked#don't offer advice or solutions unless asked or unless you ask and get direct affirmative permission#shit that sucks is a perfectly valid response#chronic illness#chronically ill#chronic pain#fibromyalgia#actually disabled#screaming into the void

This thing went viral a couple years ago 'cuz it was very funny -- remember the dystopian techbro-villain covid helmet, anyone? -- but I immediately ordered one because it is a personal hepa-filtered air bubble and I am just.
Like.
Astoundingly allergic to wildfire smoke.
It's kept me off the hardcore steroids every summer since and, also important, has stopped me from becoming a basketcase filled with anxiety every June to October because now I know the bad air is no longer inescapable.
#in conclusion#????#the dystopian aesthetics cometh one rational decision at a time?#just a topical personal anecdote i decided to share#not medical advice. . . Unless?#'you can't buy one of these without disposable income' friend they're on backorder rn you can't buy one WITH disposable income#but they exist and maybe if you also aren't great in longterm wildfire smoke you should know they exist

If anyone wants to steal from my actual life for their fanfic: crossing the hotel shirtless because this wound is directly between my shoulder blades and the doctor says it needs its dressing changed daily and you're the only person I know here
#I am extremely lucky that the fellow is friendly and a former EMT#for your fanfic needs: this has to happen twice because modern medical advice is to let the shower water wash the wound out#so you go over once to get the bandage off without tearing the edges of the wound#then you go back to take a shower#then you go over again to have the dressing applied#unless of course you invite someone over to sit in your room while you shower#I LIVE IN A FANFIC

PSA (look at me using Americanisms even here):
The US is not currently being colonised or oppressed by the UK. If you're a white American (note: please do not take my words out of context and act like I'm attacking Indian people or other groups with a legitimate history of suffering because of the UK for making some snarky comments about us!), comments about British people (that aren't specifically about the royals, the government, or JKR) are very likely NOT punching up. Comments about how we "talk the language wrong" or other cultural mockery is in fact very likely to be punching DOWN because US culture is incredibly globally dominant--what you're essentially saying is "why can't these silly foreigners talk/eat/live the American Way which is clearly superior and which everyone in the world should follow?"--or at least, it will invariably come across that way.
If I responded to a post mentioning Tootsie Rolls with "haha that can't be real, this has to be a troll post, I know America is a stupid dumb country with a stupid language for babies but they can't possibly have a sweet called Tootsie Rolls, that's too ridiculous even for the ridiculous Americans", I would at bare minimum get the response "how tf have you never had a Tootsie Roll do you live under a rock", probably also "your country doesn't have Tootsie Rolls? you must all live sad lives!", and very likely someone would get offended by my mocking language (to be clear I would never actually phrase a comment so rudely! it's not a pleasant way to talk to people, even to Americans!).
But a post mentioning some British brand names (some of which sound funny, yes--but that's not "proof the UK is a silly fake country where everyone speaks in babytalk"--it's proof that these brands are aimed at kids so have childish names--the US has Tootsie Rolls, the UK has Nobbly Bobbly ice creams, Spain has Chupa Chups [which we have here too, but it sounds even sillier in Spanish when you know it means Sucky Sucks], etc) gets a lot of people going "lol what a ridiculous country, everything is babytalk", and a ridiculous number of people going "this has to be a troll post, these names must be made up", without considering A) other reasons why you as a USAmerican might not have heard of foreign things (such as, because you mostly interact with USAmerican media because most media that gets big IS USAmerican--combined with them simply not existing in your country so of course you don't see them every day!), B) why anyone would go to the trouble of making all this up, C) you can in fact google things and find that they exist.
#this site is so American#'what TV network did you watch the most as a kid?' lists only US ones#'best brand of X' lists only US ones#'you must vote on this sign this contribute to this' and turns out you can't unless you're in the US#'if you haven't heard of X you live under a rock' X exists in ONE country out of the 195 in the world#advice posts for medical or legal stuff that are US-only but not labelled as such#'how many of these essential adult life skills do you have' and about 5 out of the 30 questions--#--are related to the arcane American process of filing your taxes--#--giving us 'you are a stupid little baby who doesn't know basic life skills' results--#--and leaving us going 'AM I stupid? tax just...happens? I don't have to do anything?? wha??'#etc etc etc

Please infodump about rats🥺🥺🥺
I just got home from Walmart RAAAAAHHHH okay hi. I struggle with infodumping if someone doesn't like ask me a Question first for some reason BUT I will try to think of smth to talk abt a little
So uhhhh baby rats! Actually because of a mistake back when I owned rats I had the pleasure of helping raise some baby rats!! It was Nerve-wracking as you might expect but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything I'd love to run like a rattery or something some day I love. Baby rats ANYWAY
A lot of people know that newborn rats look like this
But did you know that it only takes them THREE WEEKS to go from that to THIS?
Like dogs and cats, rats are born blind and deaf. The main difference is that the "toddler stage" for rats lasts, like. A week. And then they're pretty much good to go. Pups (that's what baby rats are called) should stay with their mother for as long as possible to build up social behaviors, ideally around 5/6 weeks for the males and until they get sold (or never) for the females; however, in theory, they can be taken away from their mother at 3/4 weeks old and function fine, provided they're weaned. Males need to be separated at around a month and a half because some rats are capable of starting their own families at only five weeks old.
It makes sense rats develop this quickly due to their incredibly short lifespans, but it still blows me away how fast they grow. It's insane to watch it happen in real time. They're so fascinating to me
#anyway yeah if you have questions feel free to hit me up#tho fair warning im not like. a rat scientist or anything so always fact check me if ur a rat owner im not qualified to give like#medical advice. or anything#like @ the how early they can be seperated comment#dont Actually do that unless Absolutely necessary (ie the mother is struggling to raise them for some reason)#mailbox#rats

SnowMD, what do if back starts to hurt when you overdo drinking coffee??
Stop drinking coffee so much (like if u know the cause, remove it)
Girl I'm not gonna lie to u, I sleep whenever I get a medical issue, which is bad advice but I don't really like going to the doctors and when they make me get those expensive ass blood tests and it all comes back "OKAY", I start feeling like that was a waste of money, and yeah... I kinda don't have money like that.
Like yes, unless u feel like you are actively dying or have an impending sense of doom, or your gut says "bitch get your ass to a hospital RN", or your medical problem doesn't improve in 1-2weeks, you're pretty much good to go.
Got a shooting pain in tiddy yesterday? It's okay, no need for a doc.
Got a tiddy pain 1 week ago and it keeps getting worse? Baby go seek medical attention.
#idk how im gonna make money as a doc when im advicing people not to seek medical attention for minor things#😭😭😭😭#but im also a good doc because id never prescribe u antibiotics unless absolutely necessary#so youre welcome because i just saved u frim antibiotic resistance

how's feeling more confident about adulting this year going, violet?
so glad you asked. I told myself at the beginning of january that this year I'd be prioritizing both mine and my cat's health (e.g. taking us to the vet/doctor bc it's been years for either of us) and promptly made her a vet appt. now that the vet appt is arriving uhhh next week I'm realizing I really need to also make myself that doctor's appointment I guess? uh?? fuck!
#doctors cw#medical cw#my previous gp retired last summer but I hadn't seen her in years before that anyway#I could see a nurse practitioner at that same practice#or I could go with one of the ppl my boss recommended#or one of the docs I found googling for fat-friendly providers near me#so now I have too many options and am overwhelmed#I know I need to go to the doctor#it's been multiple years + I am getting older + want to take better care of myself#specifically I would like to get (back) into (long distance) biking which I haven't been doing on account of My Joints#something Is Wrong with them and I need to get it checked out#but there's like a 95% chance that any doctor is going to start and end that conversation at 'you need to exercise more/lose weight'#never mind that I want to get the joints looked at so I *can* exercise because right now things hurt#anyway this isn't me looking for advice unless you have a specific GP rec for my area#e.g. only if you know where I live#I'm just venting bc it's so frustrating as a process#also lmao @ me for getting my cat's medical care sorted out before my own#classic! but also there's a vet literally walking distance from my apt. so that made the 'where to take her' choice easier#I've put in an appt rec for one doc. but now I'm second guessing that so back to the drawing board I suppose#sigh.

Sharing for the excellent list of cognitive tools to help deal with executive dysfunction.
Yet these tools work best as add-ons to the #1 most effective method for overcoming executive dysfunction: stimulant medication.
Dealing With Executive Dysfunction - A Masterpost
The “getting it done in an unconventional way” method.
The “it’s not cheating to do it the easy way” method.
The “fuck what you’re supposed to do” method.
The “get stuff done while you wait” method.
The “you don’t have to do everything at once” method.
The “it doesn’t have to be permanent to be helpful” method.
The “break the task into smaller steps” method.
The “treat yourself like a pet” method.
The “it doesn’t have to be all or nothing” method.
The “put on a persona” method.
The “act like you’re filming a tutorial” method.
The “you don’t have to do it perfectly” method.
The “wait for a trigger” method.
The “do it for your future self” method.
The “might as well” method.
The “when self discipline doesn’t cut it” method.
The “taking care of yourself to take care of your pet” method.
The “make it easy” method.
The “junebugging” method.
The “just show up” method.
The “accept when you need help” method.
The “make it into a game” method.
The “everything worth doing is worth doing poorly” method.
The “trick yourself” method.
The “break it into even smaller steps” method.
The “let go of should” method.
The “your body is an animal you have to take care of” method.
The “fork theory” method.
The “effectivity over aesthetics” method.
#psychology#psychiatry#important#resources#mental illness#neurodevelopmental disorder#executive dysfunction#ADHD#autism#advice#stimulants#medication#queue#original content#(in that I added to the post)#obligatory disclaimer:#stimulants are the most effective on average but don't work for everyone#their side effects are usually—but not always—well tolerated#ask your doctor before trying stimulants (unless it's OTC like the most popular stimulant: caffeine)

Notes from a concerned medical professional who reads too much hurt/comfort:
(These are all things I've seen in Hazbin/Helluva fanfics)
(Tw: for injury, illness, gore, drug use, overdose, a lot of other things)
You cannot drug someone to sleep by overdosing them on melatonin. It will not work
Don't submerge an open wound or stitches in a bathtub/pool/etc it will introduce bacteria to the wound (taking a shower is usually fine, just skip the romantic bath)
On that note, stitches do not immediately stop a wound from bleeding and should not be used to solve every problem (never give yourself stitches unless you have absolutely no other choice they can trap infection inside the body when done incorrectly)
And, if the wound is extremely deep, a person may need several layers of stitches to piece together the skin, muscle, and viscera
You absolutely cannot get high on tylenol or ibuprofen even if you mix it with alcohol.
If you do mix tylenol or ibuprofen with alcohol it can cause internal bleeding/kidney damage/liver failure, so please don't do that
If someone is shivering from a high fever, don't cover them in blankets it will raise their body temperature even more (please try correctly dosed tylenol or ibuprofen for this)
Don't submerge someone with a high fever in ice water, they might go into shock (they also might panic and hurt themselves) in a pinch lukewarm water will do
Don't put ice on burns, run them under lukewarm or cool water instead
If someone overdoses on an opoid (heroin, morphine, various pain medications), there is a medicine called nalaxone (Narcan) that can reverse the effects of opioids (edit: thank you to @queerlybehooved)
If someone is bleeding profusely, don't just hold their head and whisper sweet nothings, put pressure on the wound!!!
If a bullet remains in a person’s body after being shot it most likely should not be dug out unless it's blocking something vital, the bullet is not the problem the damage it made in it's path is
This isn't a criticism of authors who have written things like this. A lot of it isn't common knowledge, and DIY healthcare is absolutely steeped in myth and misinformation. I just worry about disinformation being perpetuated (and I really enjoy accurate hurt/comfort)
If I got anything wrong, please let me know, and I'll edit the post. I'm far from perfect and appreciate good advice

Obviously not a large enough sample size, but I got 2 similarly sized cuts on my leg from broken glass this week, cleaned both, and then put vaseline on one before putting on the bandaid but forgot with the other one.
The one that didn't have the vaseline is now scabbed over and looks a little angry/red on the sides, plus it's a little tender to the touch, the one with vaseline is almost invisible and basically completely healed.
#i grew up in a 'clean cuts with soap and water and then put in a bandaid' house#and i'm still wary of putting on neosporin unless you're like... hiking in the middle of the woods#bc Antibiotic Resistance#(and medical advice does appear to be 'neosporin is usually pretty useless' so i stand by that)#but i genuinely never thought of using vaseline outside of surgical scars and paper cuts for some reason#and it DOES appear to make a difference
