Because I feel like kids of color don’t hear it enough: domestic abuse is not a part of your culture.
A lot of us were raised with the idea that “its normal for wives/children to get hit! it helps them learn– only white folk don’t get beaten when they misbehave”. That’s not true, white people aren’t the only ones who deserve a safe and abuse free environment. Black and brown people can and do have loving families.
If you’re in a situation where you are enduring abuse and people use your culture to justify it, I want you to know that what they’re telling you are lies.
#it always saddens and horrifies me when I see anyone joking about having been hit#but I never know how to break it to someone that that wasn't OK when they're a person of colour because the times I've tried I've been told#'you just don't get it because you're white. it's normal for us and teaches kids to behave.'#like. I KNOW this isn't some inherent unchangeable thing. there's evidence that hitting children was not a thing in e.g. pre-slavery Africa#it's not ancient tradition that people criticising it are disrespecting. it's most likely a result of racism and trauma.

Hi, I am the worried anon and I am really sorry for bothering you with these questions, I know this topic is unpleasant. Also feel free to ignore or delete this ask! I realize it's very weird that a random stranger pours out their heart in someones ask...
I am one of the people who can become obsessed with fictional characters and I became obsessed with Wesker last year. A weird thing about me is that I can accept crimes like murder etc in fiction (but I do not endorse them of course) and can still like and enjoy characters who did those things, but when it comes to sexual crimes I can't (especially if the victim is way younger and that young like Rebecca). When I read about the picture I was devastated. And I became obsessed with asking other people about their opinion. I absolutely hate it when people see it as canon, make jokes about it etc. I always wanted an answer like it's just a joke, not actually canon, just for the player to see n' stuff. It's absolutely unreasonable how much I worry about it since it's just a Video game and I know Wesker did way worse things but I am still scared that it will be officially confirmed as canon. Ik many Wesker fans will be like oohhh he is into Rebecca and a little bit perverted? Funny XD like it's nothing big but it would absolutely destroy Wesker for me. I asked Kamiya a few months ago if it's canon that Wesker preyed on her or if it's just an easter egg and he said ask Capcom. And of course the Resident Evil, Capcom Accounts didn't answer because the people who maintain the Accounts aren't the writers nor devs. But I can absolutely see Kamiya confirming it as canon because something like that is typical Japanese Humor and he wouldn't see it as big Deal to make a character a creep. I love many things about Wesker but I couldn't accept him having a crush on someone who is only 18. And yes, I was diagnosed with OCD some years ago but that's my dumbest obsession so far. Someone on Twitter also kinda tried to convince me even if it's a joke it's canon and that many people misinterpret Wesker and he's absolutely able to be a creep and pervert and showed me answers from Kamiya from ten years ago where he said Wesker hid it well and claimed that without the photo there wouldn't be the Wesker Mode, that he creeped most likely on Jill and even that a former concept Art of Excella resembled Rebecca, maybe because it's his type. (I saw the short haired Excella and she didn't Look like Rebecca tho). I just want an official answer like it's not canon, no lore but that will never come... I love parts of the Wesker fandom but I am always worrying do I enjoy and ship a character who creeps on teenage girls? I know it would be for the best to just leave the fandom but on the other hand Wesker fanwork etc gives me so much Joy... And I am also not sure to tell my potential therapist about that since it's kinda embarrassing... And the weirdo who harasses people about that photo makes me unsure again... Another person asked him if Wesker is a creep and pedo towards Rebecca and Kamiya said do not take everything seriously but I am still afraid that he sees it as canon but no big deal bc funny rather than saying that it's just a non lore joke... As far I am aware a 3D modellist made the photo since it's kinda his hobby and Kamiya didn't stop him because he said playfulness is important... Sorry for the long text
I think it is clear that it was intended as a silly joke, was not intended to be an important part of Wesker's characterisation, and has never been followed up on by anything canon where Wesker never expresses attraction to Rebecca (or, indeed, to Excella, who he mostly seems quite creeped out by--even if her early concept art had been designed to be like Rebecca, concept art isn't canon, and I don't think short hair is enough to be a resemblance really.) Or to Jill, I know people talk a lot about Jill's RE5 outfit, but they forget that while the action figures and promo images show her with it unzipped, in-game it's zipped up almost all the time and also frequently covered with a plague doctor robe, she's not really walking around in a very sexualised outfit all the time. Kamiya tends to troll people and also is not someone who's ever written Wesker in a major way, so he's not going to take his characterisation or questions about it very seriously.
I totally understand sexual crimes being more disturbing to you than murder--far more people know someone who's a victim of sexual crimes than know someone who's been murdered, for one thing, so it's much closer to home for a lot of people. Ultimately though there really is not serious canon evidence for Wesker committing any sexual crimes. RE has a bit of a history of Easter Eggs that can unfortunately get creepy--for instance, Sheva's "secretary" alternate costume in RE5, apparently if you look from certain angles it becomes clear she isn't wearing underwear--clearly this says nothing about characterisation as I don't think anyone seriously thinks Sheva would ever go into combat wearing a skirt with no underwear! Or indeed that most of the characters would ever wear many of their alt costumes (much as I like Leatherman Chris). Wesker Mode is even more non-canon than the alt costumes and literally has Wesker saying Billy's dialogue.
Also, he's a fictional character, you can headcanon and interpret him how you like. I've seen headcanons that vary widely from fics where he's gay, or bi but mostly into men, fics where he's ace or aspec, there's all kinds of possible interpretations of the character that aren't "creeps on women" which is an unfun and offputting interpretation. Don't listen to weirdos on twitter or people just trying to pick fights--it sounds like they don't like the character and are trying to ruin your fun. If you can't just focus on the stuff you enjoy in this fandom and not think about the opinions of people who aren't even Wesker fans, I'd recommend taking a break, and yes maybe speaking to a therapist--I know it might seem embarrassing to have an irrational worry, but that's exactly the kind of thing a therapist is trained to deal with and a good one won't judge.

I've been getting more asks from Wesker fans apparently looking for reassurance about this so wanted to reiterate: there is zero evidence. I do not want to talk about it any more because quite frankly it's not a very fun topic of conversation. I'm not going to answer more asks about it. Until the past year or so I never RECEIVED any asks about it and people talked about more fun things with this character and I still don't know why there's been this sudden uptick in obsession over an Easter egg.
Also, one of these asks claimed "there's someone in the Wesker tag saying he creeps on teenage girls" and if that's the case...for FUCK'S SAKE whoever is doing that, did they never learn the basic Tumblr etiquette of "don't tag your hate"? A character's tag is where people who LIKE the character go, and therefore, if you do not like a character, your posts about hating the character SHOULD NOT be tagged with the character's main tag. It's basic politeness, and if anyone is putting posts about hating Wesker in the Wesker tag: they're an arsehole. Block them.
Look, I'm really not going to answer any more asks about the Rebecca picture.
I don't know why it's suddenly become such a topic of discussion. It was put in as a rather sexist, not very funny joke. It says very little about Wesker's characterisation considering that it is labelled in a handwriting that isn't his, a handwriting which matches the clue to where to find the photo which includes a photo that was clearly taken after he left--so whether it was intended to be put there by Wesker or not, it actually makes no sense with the timeline and pretty much CAN'T canonically have been put there by him. It was not expected by Capcom that anyone would take it seriously as a plot point, because sadly they expected everyone to find it funny.
Also as someone pointed out, the devs had initially talked about hiding it somewhere else, not in Wesker's desk at all, so it clearly wasn't conceived as "here's an important piece of Wesker characterisation/lore about him canonically preying on Rebecca."
Kamiya tends to give very jokey answers to questions, ranging from pretending to have never heard of Sega, to claiming every single game he has ever worked on exists in the same universe (which is very much not canon and kind of can't be possible for a whole host of reasons?). Ultimately, his statements are not canon and often he does not intend them to be taken seriously. When he is directly asked if something is canon he says to ask Capcom, because he doesn't work there any longer and does not have the power to make something canon just by saying it. He also didn't create Wesker or make any major decisions about his character.
Also, even statements by people who did have a major role in writing Wesker aren't automatically canon, valuable as they can be for learning what the initial intent was behind the character, because changes get made later and things get added--for instance, they hadn't come up with Project W until RE5, and one of the lead writers on RE1 who had a major role in creating Wesker had intended for him to have no backstory that explained why he was like that at all, simply having been born lacking empathy and having been power-hungry and egotistical all his life despite coming from a completely normal middle-class family, nothing more than "he was born like that".
Canon, ultimately, refers to: what happens in the games (though sometimes this is questionable as e.g. the later games make it clear that Chris and Jill were together in the mansion in RE1 even though when you play it you pick one or the other); what happens in the animated films; most of what is stated in official manuals and guidebooks (sometimes bits of very old ones have since been retconned, though). Not random comments on twitter from anyone who worked on the games. If it's not in something officially released by Capcom it's not canon. In canon, there is a photo in Wesker's desk, which cannot have been put there by him according to the established timeline and what we know his handwriting to look like, whether the dev who put that easter egg in was thinking it was put there by him or not. In canon, Wesker does not behave as if he is attracted to Rebecca, and has not been depicted as sexually predatory otherwise.
So no, Wesker is not canonically a sexual predator, I've answered this question several times, I don't know why everyone's obsessed with it all of a sudden (seriously, I've had more asks in the past 3 months on this topic than I have in my 5 or 6 years on this site beforehand), and it's getting bloody boring talking about the same thing all the time. (He's also definitely not canonically "a pedo", because I do think it's important not to dilute words like that. "Pedo" refers to someone who is attracted to children, not to anyone who has sex with someone younger than them, or even anyone who exploits and preys on someone younger than them. Rebecca is young, she is 18, and especially considering she also works for Wesker, a relationship between them would be WRONG, but she is not a child, and saying that attraction to her is "being a pedo" seems like a risky misuse of the word [for instance, RE2/CV Claire is 19, that's only one year older than Rebecca, so if Rebecca is "basically a child", does that also make Claire "basically a child", and now any fan who thinks Claire is hot is "a pedo"?]. And before anyone tries to frame this as "eviltothecore13 is a creep trying to defend finding Rebecca hot": I don't even find her hot until Vendetta, the whole "sweet innocent and inexperienced" thing is the opposite of hot for me, I just don't think she's an actual KID.)
The ask I got also brought up Jake's mother being younger than Wesker as a reason why the asker was worried that Wesker might be "a pedo". Listen. Wesker was 30 at the time of their relationship. A 30-year-old having a relationship with someone in their 20s is definitely not "a pedo", or even particularly weird. Also, it's...not actually explicitly stated that she even WAS younger than Wesker. All we know is: she immigrated to America in her early 20s; she met Wesker while in America (so she was in her early 20s at MINIMUM); she returned to her home country while pregnant with Jake. This actually says NOTHING about how much time passed between "she came to America in her early 20s" and "she met Wesker". She could have been 22. She could have been 25. 28. She could even have been older, although admittedly the document's phrasing being "she was born in Edonia and immigrated to America in her early twenties, where she became pregnant with Albert Wesker's child" would be a slightly odd way to phrase it if she'd been in America for years and years at that point (then again, it could just be that the writers of the in-universe document neither know nor care much about what happened in her life in between coming to America and having sex with Wesker, since they're primarily interested in Jake. FWIW in Japanese the phrasing is more like "she was born in Edonia and emigrated alone to the USA in her early 20s. Details are scarce, but it seems she became pregnant with Albert Wesker's child there", which does imply that it's mostly that they were unable to find anything on what happened between her arriving in the US and her meeting Wesker, or indeed on how she even met Wesker.) Either way, she was 100% not a child, and a relationship between two adults cannot be paedophilia. A relationship between a 30-year-old and someone at some unspecified age that's at least "early 20s" is unlikely to even be UNETHICAL quite honestly.
(For some reason I semi-regularly see fics and headcanons where she's stated to be 18 or 19, which is bizarre given that "early 20s" is the MINIMUM age she could have been in canon. She's also frequently written as a very passive, submissive character and I have no fucking clue why unless it's some Victorian idea that a woman who died of an illness must have been a delicate little flower throughout her life. Anyone can get ill, hate to break it to you. Personally I can never tell what Wesker is supposed to see in the various wet pieces of paper he gets shipped with.)
Finally: I have a suspicion that it's not that all of RE Tumblr is suddenly very interested in the photo, but that several of these asks have come from the same person. If this is indeed the case: look, I sympathise with you, I really do, you're clearly very worried about this. But spending so much time (they're long asks, they must have taken a while) worrying about whether a fictional character in a videogame might have done something that isn't explicitly canon anyway, let alone seemingly feeling guilty for liking him because some people think he might have done the non-canon thing, is...really not healthy. Honestly, I'd suggest instead of asking me about it, you might be better off talking to a therapist about intrusive thoughts and maybe OCD. Fandom is supposed to be fun and it's clearly stressful for you at the moment, and I think someone who isn't an unqualified stranger on Tumblr might be better at helping you with this. Aside from anything else, sending me these asks means you're spending MORE time thinking about the topic that clearly upsets you because of the time and energy spent typing it all out, it means the Wesker tag ends up full of this one topic, and depending on who you follow you might even end up with multiple reblogs of the ask on your timeline--none of which is likely helping you enjoy the fandom without thinking about the easter egg. I think you'll have a better time if you either try to focus on the things you enjoy about this fandom, or if you can't do that, consider taking a break from the fandom for a while.

I did an illustration for Trans Day of Remembrance today at work.

I can enjoy "they have chemistry/a good dynamic in canon" OR "they're not even from the same media" but NOT "they're from the same media but have no chemistry/barely interact or hate each other in an unsexy way".
Partly because if they're not from the same media, you have a blank slate for their dynamic, rather than having to fight against established canon interactions between them that make it imo very clear that they would never get into a relationship.
Partly because crossover ships are often (when they're not done for actor-allusion reasons) shipped because the characters have something in common, mirror each other, are shown to be each other's type/have similarities to each other's canon love interests, or other things conducive to a good dynamic--rather than all too many "characters from the same media who never interact" ships being "these are the only two conventionally attractive white men in a very diverse series where every canon relationship involves a POC and/or is F/F! Fandom will latch onto them and ship them even though they haven't met and one of them only has three lines!"
Hey, I wanna talk about how we do fandom! I've come to realize that I, personally, tend to differ from many others in that I highly prefer to only engage with a text as it's written, so I don't tend to really like fanon/extremely ooc characterizations and I find it hard to get invested in ships that aren't canon. My way of doing fandom isn't better or worse than anyone else's, but I am curious about how much of a minority I'm in! So:
*We've all seen ships of characters not from the same media and stuff like shipping the concept of ennui with the color blue, okay, I'm asking what you, personally, find compelling!

Hi, may I ask if you were also surprised when it turned out that Wesker has a son? And your opinion on Wesker having a child and on Jake as an character?
I was surprised, because it had been a fairly common fandom assumption that he was either gay, or among those who didn't ship Willsker or Chrisker, that he was aroace.
That being said I actually quite like Jake as a character and his dynamic with Sherry.
I've also very much come around to Wesker being bi and really don't like it when people claim that RE6 "is homophobic because it made Wesker straight" as if bi people don't exist. On the whole at this point I don't find the idea of him having a son implausible, I can find it believable enough that he had some kind of relationship with a woman who ended up (apparently without his knowledge) having a kid...
I just wish the fandom did more interesting things with it. Admittedly it's been a while since I looked for this kind of fic but I feel like a lot of what I've seen either involves noncon (which there's really NO evidence for in what we've been told about their relationship), or the OC woman Wesker's being paired with (who's meant to be Jake's mother) is of the "passive, submissive blank slate" trope (think, Bella in Twilight, Ana in 50 Shades), which tends to fail to convince me of what he'd see in her.

Tomorrow (or today, depending on your time zone), November 5 is election day in the United States, and so I am going to make one last plea.
If you haven't voted, if you're on the fence, if you're undecided, if you're leaning against it--
Go out tomorrow and vote anyway, because it matters.
For all its many flaws, we have seen some extraordinary good from the Biden administration. It has been quiet, it has been unobtrusive, it has been the type of government we mostly haven't had to think about, like we all dreamed about under Trump.
Kamala Harris has her own accolades to stand on. She has experience in all three branches of government--between the federal and state levels, she has been part of the judiciary, the legislature, and the executive branch. That is a virtually unprecedented for a candidate for president.
She performed one of the first same-sex marriages in the country. She established a hate crime unit in San Francisco to investigate crimes against queer youth. She established criminal justice reforms in California. She has a huge range of progressive accomplishments spanning decades.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, is a felon and a rapist who has shown unwavering support for Netanyahu, appointed the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe, and attempted to overturn the results of the last election by fomenting a violent insurrection.
The reality of U.S. politics is that one of two people will win the election. Our only possibilities are Harris and Trump.
If your priority is protecting American lives, or if it's protecting Palestinian and Lebanese lives, or if it's moving policies leftward in the United States, there is only one choice that will get you there, and it's voting for Harris for president.
Voting tomorrow will not be the glorious revolution. It will not fix the entire U.S. government. It will not enact every leftist policy you dream of.
But it does matter. It will matter a hell of a lot. No matter what you think of Harris, she will be a more compassionate, rational, intelligent, progressive president than Trump.
And if your goal is to push the country to the left, it takes actually electing candidates who are to the left. Letting a more conservative candidate win will not accomplish any of your goals.
So you vote for Harris. And then you show up and you organize. You protest. You tell her every day how you disagree with her and what you think she should be doing differently. You call your local representatives, your state representatives, your congresspeople. You write. You march. You show up and push for the policies you believe in.
But none of those policies will be possible if Donald Trump is in charge. We don't even need to speculate about this, because we saw what a Trump presidency looked like, and it was horrifying.
So go vote.
#vote#at worst under Harris your life will be the same as it is now#at best? you might get student loans forgiven (millions of people already have) better working conditions and pay and cheaper food#under Trump your life WILL be worse in numerous ways#as for big changes like land back and universal basic income that she isn't promising?#you'll be much more able to get those things if people who should be fighting for them aren't sick or starving or working inhuman hours#also if climate change ends up destroying the world pretty much ANY other political issue becomes irrelevant#like we're talking about the future of human existence here#and you have a clear choice between someone with pro-environment policies and a climate change denier

Hey
What do you think about AnnettexWilliamxAlbert?
I love it.
It's not how I interpret canon, because I think if that had been their situation, Wesker would probably have succeeded at convincing Will and Annette to leave Raccoon City with him.
But for that exact reason, it has a lot of potential for AUs.
#and I'll always prefer a poly fic over a cheating fic#I have a particular dislike for 'William and Annette never loved each other at all and he cheated on her constantly with Wesker'#feels too soap opera#and often vaguely sexist in its execution#resident evil#wesker#albert wesker#william birkin#annette birkin#willsker

Sorry for that stupid question, I hope it won't bother you too much:
Do you think the devs, writers etc of Resident Evil would be open to the idea of characters e.g. Wesker being pan/bi/queer?
They won't make it canon in games of course (too much homo/queerphobia out there)
But personally I think there is stuff you can definitely interpret in that way (but not only Wesker but also Luis or Krauser... etc)
I mean, Wesker was based partly on David Bowie...
But honestly I think a lot of characters in RE are easily interpreted as queer and Wesker is definitely one of them, and I think sometimes it might well be deliberate even though it's not explicit. Also bear in mind that even M/F relationships like Chris/Jill tend to be ambiguous in these games (they're very easily interpreted as romantic or platonic, same for many other pairs of characters) and this is deliberate so different fans can enjoy different ships without one being "right" and the other being "wrong". So a lack of canon queer relationships is partly just down to a lack of canon relationships.
And while actor statements aren't canon, I do find it interesting that Richard Waugh pretty much said he saw Wesker as attracted to people who challenge him regardless of gender.
I can also definitely see evidence for other characters like Luis, and as for Krauser... well, while I didn't love how much "gay and homophobic" or just "homophobic" generally was being applied to lots of random characters a few years ago as if being homophobic was just a funny meme trait (especially when it's a character who's never bigoted in canon), Krauser's character genuinely I think makes a lot of sense if you interpret him as gay and (internalised) homophobic.
Also what about all those posters of women on Jill's walls?
Or the fact that a virus that is stated to mutate AMABs and kill AFABs mutates Alex instead of killing her?
Or even the canon genderqueer character we have, Morpheus Duvall, even though the English translation ended up treating them like they were just a feminine man where the Japanese translation alternates feminine and masculine language for them? Yes they're an evil mad scientist, but evil mad scientists are fun!
There's a lot there even if it tends to be left ambiguous, and personally I like to make everyone queer wherever possible.

Sorry to bother you but are there any RE novels you like? I am not a big fan of SD Perrys novels but since they are not canon I do not really bother with them
None of the novels are canon, except arguably the semi-novelisations of RE4 and RE5 that were included in the Japanese manuals, which when I read a fan translation of them were pretty good, going more into Leon's state of mind post-Raccoon City for instance. Someone on the wiki keeps trying to claim the Makino novels are canon...they're not, the Wesker vs Sergei fight goes completely differently in the novel vs in Umbrella Chronicles for instance, and some of the changes they make are really weird and I'm not a fan.

I wonder if the writers ever regret putting the rebecca easter egg in
I am not sure the writers have much interaction with the Western side of the fandom, and I don't know what the Japanese-language fandom reaction has been to it. So I don't know for sure that they're even aware there has been a fandom reaction to the easter egg that wasn't viewing it as funny or just going "hey a hot girl" as the average cishet male gamer in the late 90s unfortunately would have.
Honestly people seem to have talked more about the easter egg in the past year than in my entire time in the fandom before that? Like, yes there were always a few people who headcanoned something creepy going on with Wesker and Rebecca because of the easter egg, and there were always a few people who shipped them, too, and also that one old fic that explained it with "she's his secret daughter and he just wanted to keep a picture of his daughter where she was happy and playing basketball like she loved doing, rather than only having an official ID photo of her", but it used to be much easier to talk about Wesker without people mentioning it? Most people in the fandom never really seemed to give it that much thought beyond "yeah, yeah, 90s videogame sexism, trying to 'reward' you with a picture of a girl, kinda cringe", and most discussions of Wesker's characterisation never really seemed to involve it.
For that matter, before RE6, the primary assumption among the fanfic/fanart side of the fandom was that Wesker was 100% gay (generally using his distaste for Excella's attentions as proof). The "gamer guy on Reddit and/or videogame forums" side of the fandom, meanwhile, didn't so much see him as straight, as take a position somewhere along the lines of "Wesker is such a badass killing machine that having any kind of relationship or even being attracted to anyone is beneath him, all he thinks about is mad science and world domination". (Large numbers of people on both sides of the fandom--not just the gay headcanoners and Chrisker shippers as you might think--derided RE6 as OOC because they simply could not picture Wesker ever having had sex with a woman! It's just that one half thought he had sex with men, while the other half thought shipping was lame and for girls and can we get back to the zombies and explosions now.)
"Wesker is a sexual predator who preys on women" wasn't a nonexistent position back then, but it really wasn't the majority, and most people depicting him as such were...well, straight women writing 50-Shades-esque fantasies, rather than people who seriously thought he was a creep and hated him for it. And those would often involve Claire or an OC rather than Rebecca.
It's only the past couple of years that some people have been loud about using the easter egg as 'proof' that Wesker was preying on Rebecca and as a reason to hate Wesker, and only the past few months that I've started getting LOADS AND LOADS OF ASKS about it.
I'm rather surprised by this turn of events and wonder what caused it, to be honest, it seems like a very sudden switch. Is it just the RE2 remake reminding people of it? Wesker seems a more controversial character in general these days though than he used to be. He used to be unquestionably one of the most popular characters with a very high demand for more content of him, the decision to put him in MVC3 being very popular, him regularly placing highly in "best character" polls, lots of people wanting his return from the dead, etc... sure he was evil and there were people who "disliked" him in the sense of "he's an awful person who I'd hate in real life" or maybe "he hurt my favourite characters", "killing him in-game is satisfying because I'm beating the bad guy" kinds of dislike, but not "I wish he wasn't in the series" "I want to see less of him" "I hate anyone who likes him" kinds of dislike, you know? Mostly he was viewed as a badass scheming ruthless supervillain with cool powers, and frequently also as hot. Obviously enthusiasm for "MORE WESKER!!!" will die down after it's been so long since his death (though DBD revived it a bit) but I don't know where the increased amount of outright hate for the character and his fans has come from over the past few years.
Is liking villains just less popular? It used to be a fairly common belief that, no matter how evil they might be (in fact, the more evil the better sometimes), the villains were always the coolest characters in anything. Especially in horror, considering the number of horror franchises that are ultimately villain-based (the Cthulhu Mythos, most slasher things, a lot of kaiju things though how much those count as horror varies, basically all of Universal Horror though Dracula isn't the coolest character in the book). But I know some other villains who used to be seen as a main draw of the series now have a lot of people wanting them killed off for good.
In some of those cases, though, I think decreased quality of the writing is in large part to blame (the Joker used to be seen as an entertaining source of dark comedy and was one of the most popular characters in BTAS and the Arkham games, but now liking him--far from being an uncontroversial opinion--is associated with a Very Specific Unpleasant Type Of Guy...but that's probably because a lot of recent writing of him just hasn't been that interesting or funny). The increase in people who really vocally hated Wesker happened BEFORE RE4make, at a time when he'd basically not been in anything for years, so can't really be blamed on "he recently appeared in something badly written"--so I'm not sure where it's come from.
