there are some headcanons where it's like. 'i would enjoy this as a light seasoning in fic but certain chunks of the fandom have become more committed to this than the actual canon and made it load-bearing in scenarios where it simply doesn't make sense'.

I am always very glad that my family moved to the place where I grew up partway through my childhood--we explored it, we found the good thngs, and we never lost sight of the idea that it was fun to discover stuff and look into what was going on in the area. Meanwhile people my age who'd been born there and whose parents had lived there all their lives were like "there's nothing here, it's boring, there's no fun things to do, we want to get out as soon as we can"--none of which was true. These people had been taking the same route from their homes to school every day and spending all day in school and the weekends seemingly mostly sitting at home or maybe going to the mall, and had never seen or heard of most of the places I liked in the city even though they'd been there longer!
It helped that I was home-educated and so, without the school schedule or expectation that you had to be sitting in a classroom to be learning, got to pretty much go anywhere whenever I wanted as long as it could be described as "educational". But there's no reason even people who did have a schedule to stick to on weekdays couldn't have gone out at the weekends, looking for interesting things to do, and found all kinds of things: the library--which had all kinds of events on, and a space for things like art exhibitions and makers' markets nearby; bookshops; art galleries, museums; any kind of book-related or art-related event; the annual science festival; cafes and restaurants and street food places (once you start walking down the little side streets that aren't part of the standard routes to and from school/work/the supermarket/whatever your daily routine is, you quickly get away from streets with lots of chains and into much more fun independent places) etc. After all, I now work 9 to 5 on weekdays and I still know when something interesting is going on my area and if it's at a weekend (which many things are) can still go to it. They just...didn't look, and assumed there was nothing to find.
(They also mostly believed there were no jobs or opportunities in the area, but that was more because there hadn't been many *for most of their parents' lives* and so their parents had told them "there's nothing worth staying for here, there's no opportunities, get out of here as soon as you're old enough to move out", but that had changed very quickly in the past 10 years and there were actually all kinds of opportunities.)
I hope that those who did move out did explore the new places they moved to and find good things--sometimes I wonder if people like that end up thinking there's nothing interesting in any place they move to because they never learned how to look (I think too many people expect everything to be along the main high street and think there can't possibly be anything interesting down a side street). Sadly I suspect a lot of them are still in the area and still think it's boring and devoid of anything to do, and the longer they stay there the more they'll become convinced "look, I've lived here all my life, believe me, I know the area, there's nothing interesting here because if there was I'd know about it".
Any travel advice site will tell you to travel like a local, but honestly you should local like a traveller. Go out with wide eyes and curiosity. Visit museums and parks and art galleries, try out the overpriced but highly rated restaurants that only tourists visit, take photos and video, stop to read those heritage information signs, treat yourself to an ice cream on a hot day. Don't let tourists be the only ones who take joy in your home.

I made a post about "Fandom Darling" characters who are super popular but very often have their personalities and personal relationships warped or replaced in fan works, usually also warping everyone around them. Which is, you know, let people have fun and all that, whatever, it's just mildly frustrating if you liked the canonical version of that character.
And people are sharing a lot of fun salt in the tags about this pattern, but usually about the darling's personality or narrative importance, when what finally pushed me to articulate the post was another case with the altered personal relationships aspect.
THAT'S one of the most disorienting ways for a character to be "out of character", in my opinion, because their personality can be mostly intact, but their canonical family, friends, and love interests may have just... mysteriously vanished from both the world and the character's priorities. (Usually in order to prioritize a new love interest above all else.) It's especially weird if those canonical relationships are integral to a character's backstory and their driving motivations. It's like the logical foundation has been taken out from underneath the character's personality, but it somehow remains? Weirdly disconnected?
Like, if I enjoy a character who has an unpleasant family situation, then ideally, I want to see explorations of that character dealing with that. Maybe the unpleasant family is no longer present, but we're still exploring the healing process. I'm less interested in a Modern AU where the character's mentor figure is suddenly and inexplicably their biological parent(???), unrelated characters are their new biological siblings(???!!!), and their childhood was apparently totally happy. That's... that's not my character anymore, even if they mysteriously still have the personality quirks that were a direct result of the canonical unpleasant family situation. Happy for them, I guess, but I don't really know who that character is now.

Lies you told + shit you talked about people years ago... Just know that that's all still up on this site for everyone to see.
If this is about the fact that years ago, I wrongly defended someone who turned out to be an abuser, I kept those posts up for accountability. It felt wrong to simply delete them and pretend I'd always known he was bad when I was actually completely fooled by his pretence of being a feminist. I've made further posts since then making it clear that he is an abuser and that it's a good thing he's lost his job and been replaced, but I wanted to be honest about the fact that in the past, I was very very wrong.
(It was stupid of me to defend someone I'd never met in the first place, to claim he was a good person based on nothing more than "he talks about feminism and trans rights a lot on his social media", and I feel horrific guilt about the fact I encouraged a young person to go and meet him at a con once because "he's really nice and funny and gets on great with the fans"--I'm no longer in contact with that person but I desperately hope they are OK and didn't get hurt.)
However on reflection I do think that I should--and I will, now--edit the original posts to say at the start that since the time I made this post, it's become clear that he did everything he was accused of, and I'm keeping the post up for accountability but no longer agree with it. I got a like on one of the posts recently and it disturbs me to think that people who defend him are still out there and saw my old posts and not my newer ones and think I agree with them.
I have to say I'm also not quite sure who this ask is coming from, because when it all went down on twitter, I ended up talking to many of the former victims (and I think most of the ones who were most vocal about their accusations?), apologising for the fact I hadn't believed the allegations at first, and as far as I could tell eventually ending up on fairly friendly terms with at least two of them. If you are a victim of this horrible man, I'm sorry for what happened to you, and I'm sorry I didn't believe the allegations the first time I saw them. If you are the original accuser who I said was "rumoured to be a stalker" and "not a reliable source" or whatever bullshit I parroted from the abusive creep in one of those posts, I am doubly sorry, because I should never have said such things about a person I knew nothing about beyond an abuser's word: I would have got in contact with you and apologised years ago, but as far as I could tell, you only had an instagram, which I don't use.
If on the other hand you are not one of the victims but have decided that this is the best way to fight for them anyway, I think there are better ways to help them than sending this ask to me about the ignorant and wrong beliefs I had years ago when I've already apologised both publicly and to any victims I was able to get in touch with, and had those apologies accepted. Maybe focus your anger on the people who are still defending him. Or on supporting organisations that help abuse survivors more generally.

"harmful gay stereotypes" and it's a feminine man
#I have seen a distinct tendency to assume that any character who is feminine and not a cis woman is a bad depiction of a trans woman#who is being misgendered by the narrative if he/him is used for them or whatever#without even considering them as maybe a perfectly good depiction of a GNC man or even a nonbinary person who is fine with he/him pronouns#depicting a man who crossdresses and referring to him as a man is not in fact misgendering a trans woman#obviously there's media out there that IS transphobic in this way#and where it IS clear that the writer doesn't know the difference between a trans woman and a cis man crossdresser and a drag queen#but sometimes I feel like people heard the phrase 'transphobic man in a dress joke'#and thought that it meant depicting a man in a dress was inherently a transphobic joke#the transphobic man in a dress joke is when a person perceived as a man wearing a dress is portrayed as inherently laughably ugly and gross#a 'man in a dress' meanwhile is a type of person who exists in real life#could be he crossdresses for fun. Could be a drag performer#Could be one of the many flavours of nonbinary/genderqueer who uses he/him pronouns at least some of the time#(some nonbinary/genderfluid/genderqueer people will in fact refer to themself as a man some of the time despite not being a binary cis man)#(and they might call themself a woman the very next day while dressing less typically feminine)#(identity is complicated and personal and hard to pin down!)#Could even be a binary *trans man* who's kept some pre-transition clothing because he likes to dress feminine sometimes#while being no less of a man for it#the answer to transphobic 'man in a dress' jokes is not 'it's transphobic to ever depict someone who's not a woman wearing a dress'

Not to be a stickler here, but please remember Michelle Trachtenberg was Jewish. When a Jewish person dies, you say “may their memory be a blessing”. In Hebrew this translates to “Zichronam livracha”. This is the preferred way to mourn the deceased in Judaism.
Rest In Peace is a Christian thing.
If you didn’t know this before, now you do.
