listen, I love a good "polyamory could have saved them" joke as much as the next person but I think it does more harm than good branding polyamory as this magic fix to cheating and jealousy.

you can still cheat if you're polyamorous. the bad part of cheating is the breach of trust and boundaries, which still exist in polyamory (and are very important in maintaining a healthy polyam relationship). jealousy still exist in polyamory—sure compersion exists, but jealousy is a natural human emotion that can still exists even if you're ok with sharing affection and needs to be worked through and discussed. polyamory isn't a cure-all and it requires just as much maintaining as a monogamous relationship and I think it's important to discuss that.

Yeah like, I am not saying "oh my god there are so many people who are writing kink or kink-adjacent" out of a desire to cancel people or to accuse them of dirty unacceptable behaviour or titter behind my hand or anything like that. Not all of these kinks are ones I share, but like— humanity is a rich and varied tapestry. If you get good brain chemicals off of vore, good for you. I don't, but I'm wishing you the best in those tags.

But like, human experiences exist on a lot of difference spectrums, and we've come up with the classification "kink" to describe a focus on an experience or feature or event that is unconventional or nonstandard and often sexual or sexual-adjacent, and like, we have all decided to classify these things in that way for a reason.

It is sincerely helpful if you can realize "oh, the way I feel about [experience] is not how everyone feels", and then you can both know how to talk about it to regular people and also know how to seek the content out yourself. I have a friend who's really into bloodplay— they know this and they can request it in events and they can also know not to hand it to people who didn't request it. They know that about themself. They're good. I keep hitting tropes that people seem to think are normal platonic tropes and like. Augh.

There's a lot of stuff in this fandom that is being normalized and presented as platonic, and there is absolutely a way to do a lot of this in a platonic way, but a) some of this is getting to a level of focus where I think it's pushing the boundaries of platonic, because even if non-sexual you would only behave like this to a kink partner b) some of the time I think it would be valuable for people to realize that they are engaging with tropes that are not platonic in most other fandoms, and sometimes they are still dealing with it in the same way that other fandoms are, they're just surgically removing the sex and like—boy.

When you are dealing with kink content, you can keep things definitely non-sexual, but if you go hard enough into the kink— well for one thing it should be tagged as kink, and for another, if you are used to how these subjects are dealt with in other fandoms, it can get a little wild to read fics that are beat for beat the same as kink fics in other fandoms, it just fades to black with the person falling asleep before anything happens.

Wing preening is really popular in this fandom, cause we all like drawing guys with wings, and like. God. In most other fandoms wing preening is a sexy trope, and I swear I have had to tap out of fics in this fandom because they seem to have gone beat for beat with sexy fics from other fandoms, moaning at touch and "release of tension" and writhing in the bed cause it feels so good and everything, and then nobody's pants come off and they smack a & tag on it and they call it good. If I hit that when I open up something tagged as platonic and "fluff" and "bonding" and that's it, I'm gonna have a strong reaction.

It gets so I assume anything tagged "dehumanization" is actually pet play, anything tagged "hybrid racism" is actually either predator/prey or master/slave, anything tagged "preening" is wing kink borderline-smut, anything tagged "mind control" is actually hypnokink, anything tagged "non-consensual touching" is actually consent issues/dubcon or occasionally noncon, anything tagged "non-consensual drugging" is altered states/intox kink, and anything tagged "hybrid instincts" is either omegaverse or a bdsm au. And wouldn't it be great if we could ACTUALLY use the right tags instead of all having to learn to read behind the lines with this shit untagged.

i vagguelly knew abt otherkin stuff beforehand but that was like. very vague and more in the lense of "eww cringe" bc that was all that was talked abt it

fast forward to me being 16 or so (maybe 17?) and i decide that today on www.tumblr.com im gonna go through the werewolf tag, and between all the art and poems abt werewolves i view a few werewolfkin posts and i go "huh.. thats interesting" bc i only vaguely heard of it but never really looked into it

so i dip my toes into it, and fall into the lake completely, and now im here

from which i will give some advice:

disclaimer: most of this advice comes from a psychological kin perspective, for spiritual stuff i can gather some info if you ask me but overall im not spiritual kin

1: sometimes the answer is not too clear, being alterhuman can stem from many reasons and overlap with many other things, furryness, autism, psychosis, spiritual beliefs, familiarity and importance to an animal or myth, a lot can play into it! for some beings, the experiences are very separate from each other, for others, they may cause each other or be linked or overlap, it can all depend and change around, so dont stress too much on whats what, but if you wish, you can play around and see what belongs to what, ive had the fact im a furry sometimes overlap with the fact im otherkin, and even fuel each other, but i still see them as separate identities, its all a big complicated soup. and i will say to just fuck around and see what labels you see fit

figuring out your kintype can take a while, and its not uncommon that what you first consider to be your kintype may not be the one that you actually feel you are. for example my first through upon discovering kin stuff was that i may be a cat, ive loved cats since i was practically born, ive always wanted to be a cat and themed myself around cats, hell my fursona is a cat! turns out im not one, ive tried and figured stuff out and experimented and well a cat just wasnt it. from this i'd just say to explore different animals or mythic beasts or types of robot etc etc

from that, what has helped me personally to figure out kintype stuff is to see what you desire feel and act, what kind of environment do you crave for? forests? mountains? deserts? theres a lot! what do you wish your body looked like? everyone talks about wanting claws and fangs and such but really think about it, what do you want for your body? what would make you happier? what would make you see your body more as your true self? any particular diet you have or wish to have? any behaviors you've derived from a being? maybe you hiss maybe you bark maybe you knead. do you feel limbs that arent there? such as ears? tails? horns? just look around outside and inside to see what you crave what you do what you want and such

one thing that i did while trying to figure out kin stuff was to just. draw how i view myself in my mind, and not concentrate on design or what i like and dislike on character designs, just like, draw what comes to mind on an "ideal body", you shift around features from the vague idea of who you are in your mind, draw different tails draw different snouts draw different body shapes, and see what fits and sticks, sometimes you can land on yes "thats exactly me", sometimes you can land on "its a vague idea of me but can aid me in figuring it out". thats kinda how it lead to me figuring out im primatekin, i had multiple different attempts and sketches of what i think i look like in my mind, and i just kept going until much trial and error later i found something. it went from "humanoid?" to "halfly animal-like" to "has a long tail" to "small and expressive" and eventually to a primate! (and thats how my mizamonkey design came to be QSHFHD). again for some this may bring a concrete design while to others it may be just a vague guide, not every tip works for everyone.

despite a few points ago where i stated that being obsessed with an animal or myth doesnt always equal to it being your kintype, it sometimes can be! and its sometimes how kintypes can originate to people (if we're taking the psychological otherkin route, this doesnt work too well with spiritual otherkin). sometimes youre just so obsessed and interested with an animal or myth or fiction trope that your brain kinda, adopts it for your identity. this is what happened to me for werewolves, since i was a wee lad ive been OBSESSED with werewolves and i read about them and drew about them and made stories about them that my brain has seemingly just. grabbed it and went "thats you". so look into your childhood or current state of living and see what animals and beings and such you connect with! again just as a few points ago, it doesnt always mean its your kintype, but it can be!

being alterhuman is different for everyone, i sometimes still think of this message i saw ages ago that went "ask 10 therians what being a therian means for them, and you get 11 different answers", so just because this otherkin experiences xyz, doesnt mean everyone does, and vice versa! i used to have a lot of stress about this bc i felt like i was a faker bc i didnt experience like others but after a while i managed to mellow out on it and its making me feel better!

related to that i would be careful about the resources you seek out bc from my experience seeking out resources has been a very 50/50, some tips and advice is great! while others are just why would you follow that. use your critical mind and see what suits you and what helps you.

this is more a personal opinion but i feel like the whole "choosing your kintype" debacle doesnt have a correct and concrete answer. to me if you were to just choose whatever kintype you want it may not actually be the kintype you feel like you are. i would absolutely choose to be a wolverine if i could! but it just doesnt align with my kintype and i cant force it as my kintype even if i tried. i would say that you can "try out" kintypes to see if it fits, its all about experimenting after all. its just that for most, its not as easy as pick and choose. its mainly bc your freely chosen kintype may just not be who you are, if you wanna choose a kintype either way, the community has adopted the term "copinglink" for such. for most alterhumans they did not choose their kintype. again its about trial and error

overall its going to be a lot of trial and error to figure stuff out. it took me 2 years to finally land on my proper kintypes! you may find kintypes and you may drop them. you may find yourself to not be otherkin after all! if you want more personal tips and questions you can message me here or on discord! Hi! It’s me again, i’ve done this for about four months now i think (can’t really remember) Basically i’m here to remind you how much you writing means to all of us. Writing is fun to do and it should always be something you do because you love it, and we love it too!! I read very often it’s probably what i do all day most days. I truly truly do appreciate all you guys do for us readers! You don’t have to write but you do and it means a lot. i don't think i understand your point about the shipping thing? (genuine question, open to discussion) like cause i find that having distinction between different kinds of relationships is helpful in both fandom spaces and irl boundaries. theres a difference between platonic (friends, family, even professional) and non-platonic (romantic and sexual) relationships. and having a word to refer to the non-platonic fandom stuff is useful, plus it's the way it's always been in my experience. putting the platonic stuff over on the same side as the non-platonic confuses me? if im misunderstanding, i would love for you to explain more. (hopefully this comes off as genuinely confused and wanting to discuss! and if you didn't wanna explain more that's ok, thanks for your time either way)

Shipping to me is just that - shipping. It's a middle ground for any relationship you like. If you want to specify your ships further, you can do so, but now that "shipping" just means romantic by default, I feel like there is no middle ground and suddenly I'm forced to pick a side between romantic and platonic strictly when I almost never think of that in the creation process. I just feel like I'm handicapping my art and people's ability to interpret it by having to choose when I don't view it as either or

For me personally, I have never seen fandoms handle shipping the way traffic does, and maybe I'm just biased then in that regard but it's been bothering from the start. For me, it's very difficult to distinguish platonic and romantic. And that distinction is different for everyone. I have many times seen art of characters kissing and it being proclaimed platonic, whereas someone else would label anything of that sort strictly romantic

Most times when I draw art, I get afraid of tagging it as "shipping" because then people will think it's romantic, but in my mind it makes sense because I'm still drawing a relationship I like, even if I don't think of it or am unsure as to whether or not it's romantic. To me it's just my ship. People can absolutely specify stuff as this or that if they want to! Because I've never had to think of that before, it stresses me out a lot that so much emphasis is put on strictly outlining what sense your art was drawn in, to the point that other people start labelling my art FOR me when my thoughts are "it's just my two blorbos..." and that's it. In the end, I've resorted to tagging most of my ship art as "trafficshipping" anyway just because then, people who might interpret it as romantic, and not want to see it, do not see it, even if I didn't draw with romantic shipping in mind. It's a precaution I guess

I'm not opposed to the idea of having certain terms to help filter stuff, I'm just bothered that "shipping" is entirely interpreted as romantic foremost. And if it's NOT romantic then you either don't use that tag or you make it very explicit that it's not romantic. That's where it bothers me cause I don't think of that when I draw. I view some of my ships as romantic but labelling the others as strictly this or that stresses me out. Shipping in my experience in previous fandoms, again, just means "relationship". It's not just "romantic relationship". Like I really like Doc and Jimmy with a bit of a father/son dynamic but if I tag it as shipping then people are gonna think I want them to kiss or something. If I tag Bad Boys as shipping, people will think I want them to fuck or something. If I tag my toxic FH takes as shipping, people will get upset because "clearly you don't ship them" etc. But I'm also someone who half of the time feels uncomfortable tagging individual characters in my ship art (especially when CCs have expressed to keep the shipping art out of main tags). I still want my art to be seen - I'd happily just tag it with the appropriate ship and maybe duo names if there are any, but then sometimes that doesn't even exist. And then there's a whole other conversation of, say, "team rancher" is platonic and "solidaritek" is romantic. To me they're just ranchers so I'd tag both but to some people they're very different tags, and then, again, I get stressed out because I've made it harder for people to filter art, when I don't even know if anyone wants my art filtered or not. It depends on their perception

Furthermore, about the CCs saying "keep shipping out of the main tags" - that then becomes another issue of what counts as shipping? Because I also have seen people who very evidently ship something romantically, but claim "it's not shipping!" so that then it becomes fine for that stuff to be posted outside of the shipping corner and not breaking any boundaries. I swear to you, it's not just my interpretation, it's very clearly romantic shipping for these people who I'm thinking of. And again, that distinction between platonic("not shipping") and romantic ("shipping") differs for people. Eg platonic art of characters kissing. And then it gets maintagged because it's platonic for the person who drew it, but might not be for others I could not care less how people interpret my ship art. I would prefer if they didn't label it as if it were fact, but interpretation is like, the whole beauty of art. I have no idea if this art I made is romantic or platonic, especially to a specific viewer who distinguishes those two things differently, but I'm happy for them to interpret it as they want! There is no middle term between romantic and platonic, which is where I feel like my ships usually lie, and "shipping" as a term is thought of as romantic. Anytime I talk about or draw ship stuff without proclaiming that it's platonic, people will probably just assume it's romantic, so... What do I do, y'know? Sorry for the wordy response haha I feel like it's a bit hard to explain my stance but I tried my best. It's ultimately not that big of a deal, I feel like most people are fine with this kind of system, I just have an incredibly hard time with it and am someone who gets really paranoid over me or my creations being taken as some specific thing rather than the viewer's freely formed interpretation

Yes! I have seen this. I’m really glad they mentioned they won’t tolerate antisemitism.

It seems like they’ll be allowing the spamming of FtRttS, flags, and watermelon emojis. But if they actually manage to encourage the participants to to not just demand a ceasefire but to ask them to call on their representatives to demand a negotiated ceasefire in which both sides actually cease to fire, then I’m happy enough.

I have said repeatedly that I don’t think the folks at Drawfee are bad people. I think that there is some unexamined antisemitism that is not unique to any member of Drawfee and is common in basically anyone who has not actively engaged in antiracist work about antisemitism specifically.

I trust that they want to do good.

I think in general this statement is really good because it addresses a lot of the main concerns that people brought up online about how silence encourages antisemitism.

But I also think that it will leave some Jews feeling alienated for understandable reasons. I’m not going to detail those reasons here in this post or in any post I tag with “Drawfee,” because I’m not in the habit of trying to hurt people who are trying to improve themselves and grow.

As for me personally? Idk. This statement really helped a lot. I love the gang. I have all three of Julia’s drawtectives posters on my wall. I have the Trans Rigs keychain and pride rights shirt. I have the post cards framed in various places around my home. I even have the book!

It actually made me ill to look at them before this statement—not because they owe me anything. I want to emphatically state that none of them owe me anything. But I won’t pretend it didn’t have an affect on me when I saw them engaging with blatant propaganda sources—knowingly or not. Speaking for myself and only myself: I just couldn’t emotionally handle that I had spent so much time supporting creators who might actively hate me. But now I’m back to being happy to see the Drawfee merch around me home. It reminds me of the enjoyment their content brought me.

NGL, though. I’m still pretty wounded by how nasty things got for no reason, so idk if (again, just speaking for myself here and not encouraging anyone to follow my lead in any way) I will be able to engage with the content anymore.

I want to! But I also think they probably do NOT want me to. I’m just one fan and I think my interactions, however well intentioned, caused them stress and anxiety.

I feel wounded that they interpreted my actions in a manipulative way despite my repeated attempts to make clear they were in good faith. They likely feel wounded because I (unintentionally) inspired controversy in response to what they felt was an unambiguously good deed.

Of course, they might not know or care about me specifically at all, which is fine! Who knows‽ Only they can.

Either way, whether they are indifferent to me or angry with me or annoyed at me or whatever, I feel a lot of complex ways about everything that happened during this particularly stressful time.

So, idk. I’d love to enjoy their content again. And depending on how well they curb antisemitism in the stream (which is dependent on whether or not the mods educate themselves enough on what antisemitism even looks like, which seems to be one of the main issues at play in modern discourse), I might feel safe enough to watch their content again.

It’s hard to imagine feeling that same kind of comfort that I used to though, given everything. But that’s ok. That is a personal boundary for me based on my own needs. It’s an unpleasant feeling, but it doesn’t make them bad people or me a bad person. Everyone is gonna have their own boundaries and limitations about topics this sensitive.

There’s literally so much to do?? I’m constantly wanting to go in like. eight directions at once. Underground exploring, the sky islands, getting the towers, finding a specific geoglyph cause I want to find them in order, cave diving, checking out old favorite spots from botw, actual main story missions, side quests, THERES SO MUCH

I went to the great plateau to see what all was different, and there’s a quest there I haven’t started yet, but the MAIN POINT I have is that seeing the shrine of resurrection cave was oddly sad? That place gave me LIFE and now it’s just overgrown moss :( although the hot spring was a nice touch. It still heals, even when it’s gone :) also the yiga hiding there was hilarious. He was like “prepare for the fight of your life!!!” and then I beat him in like. four hits. iconic

what the hell is writscrib what the hell do you mean by fat fetish art drama

I wanna preface this by saying that I dont remember everything that happened exactly and that theres def some informationIm gonna get wrong and also I dont have any evidence like screenshots or anything. All of this info is stuff i vaguely remembered from 2018. so basically

anyways. writscrib was (keyword was) a website thats very similar to pillowfort in a sense that it was supposed to be a superior alternative to tumblr. so like better user experience, better moderation and support, and it also prided itself that it was gonna be harassment free and callout posts werent allowed and at the time a lot of tumblr users bitched and moaned about cancel culture so they were frothing at the mouth about this. It had an indiegogo campaign and it ended up reaching its goal

They did open beta in 2018 and I signed up cause I thought it was gonna be the next big website (it wasnt) and I wanted to steal as many good usernames as I can. The extremely awful thing I remember about opening that damn website is that at the time everyone shared the same feed/dash no matter who you followed. So like for example, you dont follow me but my posts will still show up on your feed and it was the same for everyone.

So like Im on writscrib and im scrolling and someone posted. art they made of a fat person eating a burger and its very obviously drawn in fetishistic manner. And because all the users on that website share the same feed we were all seeing it real time so all of us were making posts like "did anyone else see that fat fetish art or was i imagining it" and the person who drew it who Ill call the Artist started getting extremely defensive about it

So I make a post that was along the lines of "i just opened this website and the first thing i see is fat fetish art lol" and the Artist SAW IT and replied like "its not nice to make fun of peoples art" which like. idk buddy ur putting fetish art that a lot of people didnt wanna see on our feeds but whatever.

I dont reply but someone else does and Ill call this person the Commenter (theyre still on tumblr but i wanna preserve their anonymity) and I guess an argument broke out between them that escalated and the Commenter was being kind of an asshole about it. So the next couple things that happened are kind of fuzzy but I guess the Artist reported him and the Commenter got their account banned. The Commenter kind of complained about it on tumblr and the Creator of writscrib saw because they were going through the writscrib tag and the Creator made it so the Commenter was perma banned for breaking TOS.

This caused more drama because the Creator responded in a really petty and passive aggressive way and a lot of people were like "hey this person got banned from writscrib for talking shit about it on a different website. Thats really fucked up and oppressive moderating" So it started this huge drama and the Creator made a non apology. I should also say that I went thru the Artists blog cause I found it and they did admit that they drew fat fetish art on purpose to start drama and troll people yet no one said anything so hmmm....

A side note but I made a mutual during that time who was a mod of the website and knew the Creator and apparently the Creator was a huge asshole to them. However I have no proof of this so like. Take it with a grain of salt.

Anyways the website ended up crashing and burning and shut down after a few months. lol. lmao even

okay a couple people asked so here you go! (it is Very Long so brace yourself lmao)

so basically in this au, empires is originally a book series, that is being made into a show (s2 isnt a part of this rn because when i came up with the idea it wasnt a thing but it might be added later idk)

hermitcraft is a long-running tv show, currently on season 8 and are sometimes filming in similar locations to the empires crew so theres a bit of crossover between them

its gonna be lizzie/joel/jimmy/scott centric because i didnt really watch anyone else lmao

the actors!

lizzie and joel: they are relatively famous actors, who have been seen in a few things, quite often but not together. they are married in real life, and when the cast for the empires show get released everyone is extremely excited because theyre both perfect for the parts and are gonna get married in the show

jimmy: not as well known beforethe casting got released - was in evo ab 5 years ago, which is getting more popular due to the empires show coming out. good friends with joel and lizzie

scott: pretty famous on account of being in too many films and tv shows to list, also good friends with joel and lizzie (and like a million other people) but has not met jimmy yet. (and is almost immediately smitten when he does cough cough)

pixl: has a youtube channel corun with zloy and lyarrah about the hermitcraft show, which all of the actors for hermitcraft know about and love - everyone is very excited when the filming locations for hc and empires cross over

plot! (in general lol)

i have no idea what any of the specifics are but i have a few bullet points for what i want to include

lizzie, jimmy, xornoth and scott all make a club for the most elaborate costumes (mainly later in the season where theyre fish gods, demons and covered in ice)

hermitcraft members also have elaborate costumes (again esp later in the season because of the whole mooner thing) and when theyre filming close together, theyll all go out for dinner in their costumes and completely baffle the regular people in the restaraunt

scott is gay panicking whenever hes around jimmy, which is chalked up to amazing acting by everyone but joel and lizzie who know exactly whats going on

by the time they act the date scene, both jimmy and scott are crushing hopelessly on each other, and it turns into one of the most emotionally charged scenes in the whole show because of this

when they travel to a beach for the 'would you still love me if i was a fish?' scene they all have a beach day

i also want to edit some of the actual plot of empires (cause thats what happens with books bein turned into tv) for instance, jimmy finds scott's body after the whole xornoth incident and its like 10x angstier and all the fans love it

anyway yeah! if i ever get round to it ill probably write a couple oneshots because thats easier than a full longfic. if anyone wants to draw/write something for it please tag me!

You really do have to be able to give the more moderate people who were raised a specific way and have their hobbies and interests tied to right wing perspectives and values a safe place to see that they can still Be Themselves and Have Their Hobbies without necessarily having to be a rightwing nutbag

And honestly even if the hobbies are inherently on the sketchier end for one reason or the next, some of those hobbies and interests are things they can look at once they don't feel they are forced to reshape their personality to be on the left side.

Cause honestly ive seen leftist start to consider turning to a right wing again because of how aggressive the left can be in making sure everyone conforms to the perfect image of a perfectly moral perfectly inclusive perfectly aware individual and how deeply they punish those that might just be struggling to keep up or feel accepted

Theres a large "if you don't get all of the leftist views 100% and agree with it 100% and don't perform leftism correctly, then you are a bigot basically like the rest of the right wing" and a "you have to have the same opinions as everyone else otherwise you should leave" that can be found in leftist circles that really can push a lot of people away.

When I was a teen and a right wing, I know one of the many factors that put me there other than how I was raised and what not, was that it didn't seem like the left wing CARED about my opinion and didn't seem like there was any real conversation to be had about things I either didn't agree with or understand at the time. The left seemed as though they demanded everyone to conform to the collectively agreed perfect image without question while the right was open to debating things with "facts and logic". The left was "emotionally driven and non-communicative" and "highly judgemental" and made "everything political and incorrect" and that there was "no pleasing them." And while I understand how that is really ironic in the moment, no one really provided me an avenue to explore the topics without immediately branding me as Evil and Wrong. The only people that would consider actually having a discussion with me were other right wingers

Its why its important, in the pursuit of reform and improvement, to actually leave space for people who disagree to actually have a place to feel heard and respected while they look at topics they probably never got much of an opportunity to explore OUTSIDE of right wing spaces.

Yes, white tears, yes fuck homophobes, yes fuck zionists, yes fuck terfs and transphobes, yada yada, its fair and understandable, but drawing an us vs them with people that are NOT insane Trumpies but still on the right wing / republican side as a default does NOT help the cause as much as it just radicalizes others.

Like, assuming we don't somehow MAJORLY throw the election, I'm actually looking forward to what the first black-asian woman president and Everyones Favorite White Uncle will do which... for those that might know our extreme distaste for America is a REALLY new experience for us honestly.

So, I really love the selection of Tim Walz for VP and it’s taken me a moment to articulate why. I mean, obviously, Dem bonafides, he’s sharp, he’s funny, etc etc. But everyone in the Veepstakes fits that bill, Harris was spoiled for good choices.

But Walz offers something that the other men in contention don’t that I think will be incredibly useful in combating Trumpism.

He offers an example and an off ramp to the section of men who felt like they were Republicans by default, and so support Trump by default. There are a lot of Trump voters who are full on obsessive, but that’s not who we’re talking to. We’re talking to folks who grew up in Republican areas, or felt their hobbies didn’t line up with who a Democrat was, or didn’t feel represented by their image of a Democrat. You want to see it so you can be it, you know? Which is why Harris is so inspirational to a lot of segments of folks, but Walz is too.

He served in the military. He went to a state college. He’s your favorite teacher from your public high school. He’s your football coach who actually cared if you were passing your math class. He’s the guy you looked up to at school when your family sucked but this guy cared, and he helped you get out and make something of yourself.

He’s the neighbor who helps you jump your car. He’s your uncle who takes you hunting. He’s your Dad who loves teasing you at the Stare Fair. He’s you when he makes a mistake like his DUI and takes responsibility for it, and when he has the chance makes sure other can come back from similar mistakes. He’s you when you and your wife want so badly to be parents and IVF gives you the family you wanted. He’s you when he says ‘it had to be me’ and used his standing and power to protect vulnerable kids sponsoring the GSA at his school.

He gives the real life example to these men that they can be that football, fishing, hunting family man who wants to provide for his family, be that powerful, respected member of the community and use that power to feed kids in school. That it’s normal to enthusiastically work for a boss like Harris. That yeah those other guys are fucking weirdos, and you’re not a weirdo, are you?

That there’s a place in the Democratic Party for them. That they don’t have to default to being fucking weird.

I hope those guys see this example of masculinity and go… yeah, that’s me. That’s who I’m gonna be.

YES. Light had grown up being told by everyone how 'we can count on Light!' like he was really really not accustomed to minor failures let alone a gigantic failure of accidentally killing two people.

He had the choice to either:

a) accept that he fucked up and live with the fact that the former virtuous best student of Japan was a murderer (even if it was by accident: he didn't think that the Death Note worked before he tried it on)

b) deny that it was all a mistake coz Light Yagami never makes mistakes (not on such an enormous scale that is), rationalize his actions to the point such that his killings served a purpose actually- his actions were not accidental or evil or contradictory to his morals- but in fact necessary to rid the world of evil (he HAS to convince himself that it was deliberate to rid the possibility of him making a mistake)

You can guess which option Light (our boy who wants to be righteous at all costs and who CANNOT bear to be labeled a murderer) opted to choose.

And even then he was so guilt-ridden that he thought he was gonna die for his wrongdoing so he decided to make the most of the time he was alive before a Shinigami arrived to claim his life. He wished to make sure his life of mere 17 years had a purpose. Before his punishment, he wanted to ensure that his actions (killings) mattered.

So, of course, he proceeded to kill many many other criminals until Ryuk arrived. He was (according to him) going to be killed for God's sake. You could argue that Light wanted to be punished- to die like a martyr for his cause.

However, as we all know, that doesn't happen. Ryuk not only tells him that he won't be killed, he also tells him that all people, regardless of the morality of their actions, after death go to Mu (neither Heaven nor Hell). There is no divine being out there to judge anyone's morality here; there's only apathetic Shinigami who simply kill humans to lengthen their own life spans. In other words, there is no divine order.

And Light refused that. If there wasn't order, he'd make order. Otherwise he'd have to confront the fact that all his actions (his more than hundred kills in a matter of days) were meaningless as Ryuk is not there to tell him if he's good or bad.

So, he has to carve out meaning in a world if only for his own sanity.

You know what, yeah. There’s all this talk about calling into question Light Yagami’s mental health to understand why he’d end up the way he is in canon.

But I can’t help but feel like that kind of discussion takes for granted how emotionally and psychology heavy and mind bending not only unintentionally killing two people is, but having reality as you know it entirely shifted by the knowledge that it’s fully possible to smite somebody down just by writing their name down in a magical book.

The existential implications of this when you’ve lived your whole life not even believing in the supernatural otherwise is a lot. I think I’d go absolutely mad instantly, too.

Everybody else in the series has the benefit of growing desensitized to this phenomenon over a period of time from a distance whereas Light is the first to find out and has to deal with it head on right in front of his face. Yeah, I’d be not okay in the head.
