Joshua says when he first arrived at the South Mackenzie Correctional Centre in November 2023, he was skeptical about its therapeutic community model. “I questioned everything and I was finding myself trying to change them, trying to change the program … and I wasn’t getting anywhere,” he said. Yet Joshua recalls telling himself as he later walked out of the Hay River facility: “Wow, here I was so-and-so months ago, saying that I was going to change this place. And actually, the program changed me.” Joshua, not his real name, spent nearly eight months at the facility in Hay River, which he said had a profound impact on his life. Cabin Radio has agreed to protect his identity. After being released, Joshua said he began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, reconnected with his family and is now completing an addiction recovery program in Ontario.

Alexandra Falls, NWT (No. 5)
The Hay River (South Slavey: Kátå’odehche) is a large river in northern Alberta and southern Northwest Territories, Canada.
It originates in the muskeg of north western Alberta, flows west to British Columbia, then curves northward and returns to Alberta, where it follows a north-northeast course towards the Northwest Territories. After passing over two main waterfalls, the Alexandra Falls and Louise Falls, it flows through the town of Hay River and discharges into the Great Slave Lake. From there, its waters are carried to the Arctic Ocean by the Mackenzie River.
Hay River has a total length of 702 kilometres (436 mi) and a drainage area of 48,200 square kilometres (18,600 sq mi).

Inuvialuit herders move Canada’s last free-range herd of reindeer, numbering around 4,000, to the animals’ calving grounds. The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation took full ownership of the herd in 2021 with a goal of growing a sustainable food source.

MSN 12327 was a Douglas C-47A-5-DK but was quickly redesignated a "Dakota III" upon receipt by the Royal Air Force in 1944. Just two years later, the RAF transferred over to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where she continued to be identified as KG330. She flew on and on, until 1970, when the RCAF renumbered her as 12913. At some time in the mid 1970's, she was released from military service and registered as C-GWZS by her new owner, Can-Air Services. They employed her for three years, when Contact Airways acquired her but quickly resold the sturdy bird to Buffalo Airways. Like some others, Buffalo probably leased GWZS to Northwest Territorial for a few years before she became part of the active fleet and one of the stars of the cable television series "Ice Pilots". She flew one of the last commercial airline routes into the late 2010's and continues to fly ad hoc flights.

Clad in a crisp white dress shirt, Wilbert Antoine, 77, puts the finishing touches on a vest he made.
"It's exhilarating," said Antoine, beaming with pride about his first sewing project.
His thoughts linger on his mother, a master seamstress who made her children moccasins and mitts before they left to residential school.
"It all got taken away," said Antoine. "I'm very, very humbled and grateful to be able to do the things that my mom had made for me."
Antoine is a member of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation in Fort Simpson, N.W.T. He's taking part in a sewing workshop for men — a first for the community. [...]

Mrs. Duval threading needle [William Duval's wife, Aulaqiaq. Although blind, she was still able to thread the needle and sew.]
Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories (Current day Nunavut), 1946 Library and Archives, Government of Canada. Archives/Collections and Fonds - Item ID #3192235 (x)
Aulaqiaq was the second wife of German-born American whaler, William Duval. Duval had his first whaling expedition to Arctic Canada in 1879, leaving back to the United States in 1883, and finally permanently returning to the north in 1884. William integrated well into Inuit society, as he became fluent in Inuktitut and was given the name of Sivutiksaq (which translates as harpooner).
Aulaqiaq and William had four children, two of whom survived childhood (daughters Towkie and Alookie, born around 1900 and 1902, respectively). Aulaqiaq and William still have many descendants in Baffin Island region of Nunavut currently.
Unfortunately, I could not find much information on Aulaqiaq herself, aside from her marriage to William Duval, and the children they had together.
