Clad in a crisp white dress shirt, Wilbert Antoine, 77, puts the finishing touches on a vest he made.
"It's exhilarating," said Antoine, beaming with pride about his first sewing project.
His thoughts linger on his mother, a master seamstress who made her children moccasins and mitts before they left to residential school.
"It all got taken away," said Antoine. "I'm very, very humbled and grateful to be able to do the things that my mom had made for me."
Antoine is a member of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation in Fort Simpson, N.W.T. He's taking part in a sewing workshop for men — a first for the community. [...]

It’s summer in the Territories and that means things just above the 60th parallel have thawed—including Benton Fraser.

Inuvialuit herders move Canada’s last free-range herd of reindeer, numbering around 4,000, to the animals’ calving grounds. The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation took full ownership of the herd in 2021 with a goal of growing a sustainable food source.

MSN 12327 was a Douglas C-47A-5-DK but was quickly redesignated a "Dakota III" upon receipt by the Royal Air Force in 1944. Just two years later, the RAF transferred over to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where she continued to be identified as KG330. She flew on and on, until 1970, when the RCAF renumbered her as 12913. At some time in the mid 1970's, she was released from military service and registered as C-GWZS by her new owner, Can-Air Services. They employed her for three years, when Contact Airways acquired her but quickly resold the sturdy bird to Buffalo Airways. Like some others, Buffalo probably leased GWZS to Northwest Territorial for a few years before she became part of the active fleet and one of the stars of the cable television series "Ice Pilots". She flew one of the last commercial airline routes into the late 2010's and continues to fly ad hoc flights.

Almost all Indigenous governments in the N.W.T. signed on to a big deal that unlocks $375 million worth of funding for conservation efforts this week.
Dahti Tsetso, who was given a standing ovation during the signing on Thursday for her role bringing more than 20 communities together, told CBC News it took more than two years to get to the point of putting pen to paper in Behchokǫ̀.
Tsetso, who is the deputy director of the Indigenous Leadership Initiative, said there's still a lot of work ahead though.
"Really, this is just the starting point," she said.
The agreement is called N.W.T.: Our Land for the Future, and it uses a project finance for permanence model that uses both government and private dollars for long-term conservation on a large scale. [...]
