Oh @diabolicalfiend you mentioned you hadn't seen people parallel Ray and Caroline Fraser before. I know it was in my old flist but maybe wasn't as mainstream.
So I gif!
Also I get it's very sub-textual, in say comparison to the Bob and Buck, and friendships or partnerships they use for both Rays.
Scene setting: Fraser freaking out about driving the Riv and all flustered. Cause Ray's got himself in trouble and in danger going to prison alone. Fraser has the opportunity to transfer back to Canada, has told no one, and which by episode's end he rejects BTW. Bolded Caroline section.
Robert: So we're off then. [he looks at the transfer papers]
Fraser: Do you mind! This is private.
Robert: I don't know about you but I could use a change of scenery.
Fraser: What possible difference could scenery make in your condition?
Robert: Well I always liked a good view.
Fraser: What? Barren rocks and snow?
Robert: You used to climb those rocks.
Fraser: I still do.
Robert: Well let's choose one then [pulls out a map]
Fraser: Dad, I don't have time for this. I'm in the middle of a case.
Robert: Oh. Lord Nelson. Your mother and I had a cabin. One bedroom with stove and all the coal she could carry and 360 degree view of the strip mines.
Fraser: Sounds attractive.
Robert: Three months and your mother was a raving lunatic. Then we moved on to Nelson Port, Nelson House. The names alone drove her around the bend. We finally ended up in Rat River. Oh I have fond memories of the Rat. Your mother didn't.
Fraser: I can imagine.
Robert: Gotta look ahead son, not back.
Fraser: I haven't left yet.
Robert: You will.
Caroline doing all the heavy lifting lifting you say? "Why do I always have to be the fulcrum?" and North Ray Vecchio lol. Hating the names? The difference between Tuktoyaktuk and a Runamukluck? Was that downtown Inuvik? Bindlestitch Benny? Or just how much Ray insults Fraser's apartment lol.
BUT BEST is traffic tease. They do it in small doses all the time. "That was a stop sign Ray." two second later "That was another stop sign Ray."
Robert Fraser:: I arrested your mother once.
Fraser: You did not!
Robert Fraser:: Honest to God... I gave her a speeding ticket.
Fraser: You knew it was her car and you pulled her over anyway?
Robert Fraser:: No I was sitting right there in the passenger seat.
Fraser: Get out.
Robert Fraser:: She was doing 45 in a 30.
Fraser: Mum?
Robert Fraser:: I kept telling her I was going to do it and every time I did she kept speeding up. Made absolutely no sense.
LOL.
And then heartbreak reference.
Muldoon: --Your Mother was a pretty woman, Benton but when I shot her, she dropped like a big old sack of potatoes.
*A literal one minute later*

Northwest Territories Ablaze
The boreal forests of northern Canada have evolved to burn. These forests are dominated by black spruce, a type of evergreen that is not just tolerant of fire but dependent on it.
Black spruce has waxy, resinous needles adapted to ignite during lightning storms and burn vigorously. The forests thrive if they burn every century or so because fires open the canopy up to light, stimulate new growth, and help maintain biodiversity. Fires also melt away the waxy coating on cones of black spruces allowing them to deposit seeds uniquely designed to thrive in charred, acidic soils. But Canada’s black spruce boreal forests have been burning more frequently in recent decades, putting even these fire-loving forests under strain.
When the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the NOAA-20 satellite captured this image of smoke streaming throughout the region on August 11, 2024, the sensor detected nearly 100 active fires burning in the Northwest Territories, according to data posted by the territory’s government. The Canadian government, including the Northwest Territories, uses hotspot data from the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), a fire monitoring system developed by NASA, to help detect and track wildfires. The image below, captured by NASA’s EPIC (Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera) on NOAA’s DSCOVR satellite, shows a river of smoke from the fires in western Canada winding its way over the Hudson Bay.
Most fires in the Northwest Territories burn far from towns or infrastructure, so authorities let many of them burn themselves out, a process that can take weeks or even months depending on the weather. Of the 96 fires active on August 11, Canadian authorities reported that 88 of them burned unhindered by firefighting efforts. Firefighters had controlled five fires and were in the process of suppressing one, according to the territory’s government. None of the fires were close enough to settlements to trigger evacuation orders. However, dense smoke has triggered air quality warnings for fifteen Northwest Territories communities, including settlements in the North Slave, South Slave, Dehcho, and Sahtu regions.
The fires coincided with a drought classified as moderate to extreme by the North American Drought Monitor and a week of extreme warmth that broke temperature records in several places in the Northwest Territories, including the towns of Aklavik, Inuvik, Fort McPherson, and Tuktoyaktuk. All four communities surpassed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit); Fort McPherson’s temperature soared to a remarkable 34.9°C (94.8°F) on August 7 and 8.
Though Canada’s black spruce forests are accustomed to fire, ecologists who study them are finding that some forests in the region are struggling to recover after fires due to the increasing frequency and size of fires in the region. One study led by Jennifer Baltzer, an ecologist at Wilfrid Laurier University, found that black spruce’s ability to regenerate declined at 38 percent of the 1,500 recently burned forest sites included in the study and failed to regenerate entirely at 18 percent of the sites—unusually high percentages compared to the historic norm. The analysis was based on tree regeneration data compiled and analyzed as part of NASA’s Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE).
Many of the areas burning in this image also burned in 2023, during Canada’s worst wildfire season on record. However, the total number of fires and the number of hectares burned in the Northwest Territories through mid-August 2024 are below the 10-year average so far, according to data released by Canadian authorities. The extent of burning in neighboring British Columbia and Alberta through mid-August 2024, however, was above average.

Come to Tuktoyaktuk and see our 7/11 where we have bananas for only a few bucks. I'll wait.
That's in Canada, for one, if you wanted to go for the Easy Own you could've said, basically anywhere in Alaska, or food deserts generally. Of course I've already discussed those, so I won't repeat myself; to be specific to this ask, indigeneity does not immunize you from, participating in society. The computer/phone you typed this anon on utilizes Tantalum refined from Coltan extracted from the third world by Canadian mineral firms, in its capacitors, which, if you're unfamiliar with electronics, is a very critical component. Of course you can buy such a computer almost anywhere, - indeed, you basically have to, nobody makes 'slavery free' computers, and I would caution against believing any claims people make to that effect, - but you are buying it in Canada, at the price of the beneficiaries of Imperialism, with the ease of access of the beneficiaries of Imperialism, you, as a citizen of the first world, have the first and greatest serving, compared to the third world. You are, after all, - whether or not it was imposed by genocidal force and assimilation demands, - a Canadian citizen. Of course, as an indigenous person, this still comes after the white people, but that's not what we're talking about, is it?
Colonization and Imperialism are, as you will be apparently surprised to find out, different processes that produce different effects on a given, and between them, produce a unique relationship. This relationship is not one of absolution.
As I've said to, several people now, I'm native american, half of my family lives up on a desolate mountainside without access to utilities, electricity, non-exorbitantly-priced groceries, and work in general. There isn't even a road to my grandmother's house; the path you have to take is so steep that any incorrectly balanced vehicle will tumble over and off the side of a several meter drop.
I assure you, I know what I'm talking about.

oh no i can imagine zed and doc being holed up in idk alaska for a business trip making cures but no one knows because theyre in the frigid north. though its also very funny to think they independently figure out
Zed and Doc made it to Tuktoyaktuk, but the way they work is vastly different from one another, which has resulted in a "you stay on your side and I'll stay on mine" lab stand off. Development of the cure is stalled for the time being.
(Or maybe Doc just went "I'm not dealing with this" caught the last plane to Florida and is currently doing everything in his power to endear himself to the local gator population in his isolated Everglades hideaway.) - 🔒

Last night I dreamt AGAIN about visiting Tuktoyaktuk
Except it wasn't on the Arctic ocean on the coast of the NWT, it was on James Bay. But James Bay wasn't on the south end of Hudson's Bay, it was on the southeast coast of Nunavut. And that's where Tuktoyaktuk was. And my Dream Tuktoyaktuk has a large hydrological channel running down into the sea and it looks like a really fun giant waterslide. Also Tuktoyaktuk has a bitchin rec centre and a steamboat ferry across the river in town.
Stop haunting my dreams fake Tuktoyaktuk
#a post that is completely incomprehensible to anyone unfamiliar with Canadian geography#and this dream is actually a nightmare meant to haunt my canadian geography obsessed ass#i can tell this reality is fabricated from a combination of my wish of doing a big roadtrip throughout northern canada#and my grandma's stories of growing up in a northern canadian town#one time i dreamt#Tuktoyaktuk#dream
