hey ill send you an ask! hows it going? post your favourite coin
Thanks!
Not much is happening TBH? Or at least to the extent that stuff is happening, in the short-to-medium term, I don't know what to say about it without some much more precise prompts on what exact kind of stuff you're interested in. I went to a beach today I guess? (And in the medium-to-long term things are too uncertain to say much about yet; too much depends on what would happen in places I don't really have influence over.)
I've moved to another country in 2022 because everyone was abandoning (and/or putting active sanctions on) my previous country due to a deeply unpopular war (that I didn't even vote for) and I was worried about being conscripted (and also for family reasons but the conscription thing was probably the main reason). Then in 2023 I saw my new country start its own (slightly less deeply) unpopular war that made approximately everyone abandon it, and I didn't really have any more places to go to... but at least I knew I didn't have to worry about being conscripted, and ongoing US support (and a long tradition of relative self-sufficiency, even if mostly for religious reasons) means that the sanctions are barely noticeable so far.
Not counting circulation finds, I had bought a grand total of about ten coins for my collection since October 2022. (I've received a few hundred more as gifts from friendly relatives.)
Favorite coin... it's a really hard question, you know! I don't recall your criteria/preferences for good coins offhand, and maybe if I knew them (I think I've seen them posted at some point...) I'd figure out which of my coins was the best fit for those. But also maybe that's not the right question to ask anyway.
For what it's worth, as of the moment I started writing this response, the first coin I thought of was that one silver coin I accidentally got for way under its true value because it was in such perfect condition that I thought it was probably made of aluminium (and accidentally confused it with a vaguely similar aluminium type while initially looking it up, though I don't recall whether that happened before or after I decided that it couldn't possibly be silver), and the dealer knew even less about those coins than I did, so he believed me and lowballed the price.
Then I figured out what went wrong and posted that on a forum, and it was a whole mess, and I eventually came clean to the dealer, and IIRC he basically said something to the effect of "I mean I didn't invest in it much either, happy that it's with someone who at least knows what it is". (Then I proceeded to buy a semi-key-date Barber quarter from him for under melt - and this time I did ask several times if he was sure about the price. I miss that guy.)

Yemen - North Mutawakkilite Kingdom (1918-62) Yahya Muhammad Hamid ed-Din (r. 1918-48) AR 1/10 (Imadi) riyal 1362 or 1364 AH? = 1943 or 1945 AD? Y# 5.5, Numista 39981 (my coin is currently the page example)
"Wait, if the coin is in such great condition, then how could there be an uncertainty in the date?"
That's because it's an overdate! The 6 is engraved over a 4 (that is, ٦ over ٤ - you can see both shapes here, but the 4 is mostly obscured), and the last digit is either 4 over 2, or 2 over 4 - but both of the ٤ (4) and ٢ (2) shapes are strong enough that it's hard to tell which was there first, and of course both 1364/42 and 1362/44 are chronologically possible.
The references (i.e. Krause) include 1362/44 (though I've never seen an example labeled as such), but not 1364/42, as a possible option; they do, however, have 1364/43, for which the NGC World Coin Price Guide provides this example... an exact die match to my coin.
Unfortunately, a comparison of their coin and mine makes it clear that the supposed "3" is almost certainly a misreading; a combination of wear (flattening out the relevant area) and what appears to be a slight crack (?) gives the digit ٢ (2) a seeming extra bump at the top, making it look like ٣ (3). On my coin there is no bump and the digit can only be read as 2.
I've been uncertain over the years I've had this coin over whether it's actually dated 1364 (1945 AD) or 1362 (1943 AD), though I tended to default to the former. I thought that this is entirely unknowable, but now that I think about it, it might theoretically be possible to find a match to the pre-rework die, and see if it says 1342 or 1344? But there's not a lot of those 1/10 riyal coins depicted online in the first place, and none of the ones I could find seem to match this die - and of course there's no reason to assume that the die as originally made was used to mint coins at all, as opposed to being some kind of unneeded surplus that got reused two decades later.
...Comparing the styles, I think 1344 (and consequently 1362) is more plausible, but I can't be very sure. But at least now I've figured out at least a theoretical possibility for how it could eventually be known what it actually is?
Numismatics is complicated.
(Maybe some day I'll actually write up my extensive post on a possible reattribution of the monogram AE4 type traditionally attributed to the usurper Leontius... I was a good way in before I discovered that the question was treated in far more detail, with far more examined examples, in a Swiss article from 2020. Of course the article is [mostly] in Italian, and IIRC it did not raise some of the points I noticed, so maybe it is worth writing out my version as well. TL/DR: it's probably not Leontius, but it's hard to say who it might be, and the only other historical attribution for the type makes the Leontius option look sane.)
...Sorry for the long and rambling post. I think I had another point to make in here but if so I've completely forgotten what it was.

I think people need to realize that it was sheer luck that they have been born in developed countries with decent living conditions, away from the threat of war or civil conflicts. It is by pure coincidence at times that you end up being a citizen of a developed country, rather than one with an impoverished population experiencing man-made (because it is man-made in this day and age) famine, diseases that have been long eradicated or war (be it a civil conflict or due to selfish interests of developed nations who profit from these, at the cost of civilian lives). You could have been born into these conditions.
The point is: NO ONE should ever be made to witness the horrors of war, famine, poverty, disease or any other trauma inducing situation in which they have no free will or say about its outcome.

NORTH GAZA (RNN) — The director of the besieged Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, (https://t.me/PalestineResist/64510) speaks from within the ICU where the injured and medical staff are besieged after being bombed by IOF tanks and a lack of aid or fuel reaching the hospital.
The second video shows when Dr. Abu Safiya reported on the siege and bombing of the hospital earlier today, including the ICU. Over 150 patients in a critical condition are in the hospital, and 15 require critical surgeries but are unable to receive them.
A UN delegation arrived at the hospital coinciding with the siege.

“I don’t talk about Palestine because I don’t like going into politics : /” fuck you. The existence of Muslims and MENA people has always been political to the West. Their lives and their deaths. Their happiness and anger and sorrow. Their love and hatred. Their sweat and blood and tears. Everything has always been reduced to politics when they are more than you could ever begin to comprehend. Palestine will be free. And so will Sudan and Pakistan and Lebanon and Yemen and Syria and every other country, place and people who suffer only for their pain to be called political by those responsible for and complicit in it

Countries that have had soldiers hired by russia for its war against Ukraine:
North Korea
Yemen
India
Chechnya
...
But when the US allows Ukraine to use ATACMS on russian territory, it makes them involved in the conflict.
100% Kremlin bullshit.

I love the milk 50 cents too! Maybe something to look for if I ever get somewhere with coin stores that could realistically have something like that.
I don't have the Cook islands $2 either (been hoping to get one but never saw an example for a price I was willing to pay) so here's a Yemenite pentagonal 1/8 riyal instead.

...sorry, the photos are 90 degrees off due to a bug on Coin Community.
This coin looks really old (I think it might be hammered actually? not sure), but it was actually made less than a century ago! In fact the monarch who minted it only came to power in 1948.
And for the sea creature lovers in the audience, here's an Olbian dolphin coin! I think those were made circa 5th-4th century BC, ish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not the best photos and not the best coin (and I'm pretty sure it's got bad oxidation, too). Still neat, though.
Unfortunately, Olbia happens to be in what is now Ukraine (indeed very close to the current front line, though AFAICT the site itself hadn't been occupied by the Russians at any point in the war), so I imagine it would be pretty hard to get a hold of one of those bronzes in most Western countries...
any weird coins, just completely out of this plane?
hm see i immediately thought of three coins for you
Tumblr media
ones waffled (the mint went ‘fuck no’ and destroyed it before it went into circulation), one is an error coin (struck through oil) and the other is some celtic protomoney! all fun little interest pieces that ill show to people who are a little bit interested in coins but probably won’t see the joy in say, the canadian 2008 coloured poppy quarter.
i was just about to hit post when i remembered her…

we NEED to keep talking about Palestine. we NEED to keep talking about the death and famine in Gaza. we NEED to keep talking about the war crimes the IOF is committing and shamelessly flaunting online right in front of us. Why aren't there any tags regarding this on the trending tags page anymore?
I am so ashamed we can all sit comfortably in our homes and enjoy our fandoms while nearly almost 30,000 Palestinians, 29,692 human lives, have been mercilessly slaughtered and starved out, and thats only since October 7th to this day. The injured count lies almost around 69,879.
In the past 24 hours, at least 86 people were killed, and around 131 others are left injured.
These are not just numbers. They are REAL people who just had their whole lives violently torn apart in just a day. Entire family lines massacred and wiped out in just a day.
UNRWA says the last time it was able to deliver food to northern Gaza was January 23rd.
January 23rd.
That is well over a month by now, and people are starving. People are using donkey fodder to keep themselves going. They have so much hope and determination, but the world is still failing them.
Keep the discussion open. Keep reblogging and tagging updates on Palestine. Keep doing your daily clicks, and donate somewhere if you financially can. Keep striking. Keep sharing the atrocities committed by the I"D"F and its supporters (our own complicit countries) so the innocent people of Palestine aren't swept under the rug like the rubble that burries their martyred mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children. I am painfully reminded of my own people lying in unmarked graves somewhere forgotten and hidden away, the horrors of residential schools shared to me by my poor grandmother and Canada's continued silence. And that pales in comparison to the mangled bodies piling up in Gaza before our very eyes.
This is genocide.
This is not a trend, this is real life. They are still dying, starving, mourning, and petrified. Never forget the genocide the IOF is carrying out for the whole world to see. Never stop talking about it long after Palestine is free.
From the river to the sea, Palestine WILL be free. 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸

does anyone have reading recommendations that clarify the difference between liberalism and fascism? I’m having trouble distinguishing what is just like normal levels of imperial/colonial violence conducted by a liberal state and what pushes it over the edge into a fascist state. Is fascism simply mature liberalism? Is it liberalism in crisis? Can we only make historical, reactive judgements about what is fascist, which is to say, can we only know if fascism occurred after it has come and gone? I take the general point that calling all liberal states fascist can let them off the hook for types of violence considered normal or “just doing business,” invisibilising the daily violences they conduct as part of the regular maintenance of a liberal capitalist state. People are calling the US fascist for its direct participation in and funding of the genocide in Palestine - a diagnosis I don't disagree with, but if that’s the case, where do you draw the distinction between the US being merely a liberal state with aggressive global imperial ambitions and the US being a fully fascist state? Perhaps more bluntly, what’s the difference between a liberal drone strike and a fascist one? I’m struggling to understand the value of the fascist label, because everything it describes (ultranationalism, a theory of racial and cultural degeneracy/decline, paranoia about an imminent external threat expressed as violence against internal populations deemed to have insufficient loyalty to the country, a turn towards a mythologised tradition of the past, imperial expansion, genocidal projects against minority populations, etc etc) just seems to me like a description of United States in general lol
