By introducing just a few live plants, air quality can be improved within your space. CO2 can be reduced by 50% as well as a reduction in the dust, bacteria and mould which would otherwise be inhaled. Dust levels in your space can be reduced by up to 20 per cent when plants are introduced.
With correct placement of plants, the need for air con can also be reduced and the air kept at a higher humidity (up to 20%).
By reducing the dry air caused by air conditioning and increasing humidity, illnesses such as tickly coughs are much less common.
🌿 Here’s 7 indoor plants that help to purify the air around your space:
1. Snake Plant: This popular plant can actually help you get a good nights sleep! Snake Plant, otherwise known as Sansevieria, releases oxygen at night - making it a great low maintenance plant for the bedroom.
2. Spider Plant: This common houseplant is one of the easiest air purifiers to grow! It is also great for pet owners, as it is non-toxic.
3. Bamboo Palm: This palm excels in removing molds and ammonia often found in household cleaning products.
4. Dracaena: At this point, we all know dracaena. These common houseplants clear out air pollutants such as benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, and carbon dioxide.
5. Aloe Vera: Not only can the gel of this plant help ease burns and scrapes, this succulent purifies the air of formaldehyde and benzene.
6. Rubber Tree: This plant with thick waxy leaves produces tons of oxygen and removes bacteria and mold spores from the air.
7. Aglaonema: This low light plant excels low levels of benzene and formaldehyde from the air.

Low-Energy Ways to Work with Nature and her Spirits:
Look outside. That's it - just open the curtains and see the sunlight, find the trees outside your window and watch the birds.
Put on a documentary or youtube video about a cool animal, ecology, the natural world etc
Talk to nature - whisper, talk out loud, say it in your head - just talk. Compliment pretty flowers, chat about how creepy but cool you think spiders are, picture light dancing off morning dew.
Trace the shapes of leaves/flowers/animals etc on your bed sheets or skin - try to see how many different shapes make up the natural world, find the patterns and fractals within them
Learn the name of one new local plant a week! Just one a week! If you have the energy, research a little about their ecology, history or medicinal uses
Make a flower crown/daisy chain/leaf crown
Take up nature photography - you don't need a fancy camera, jsut your phone!
Collect some shells/rocks/bones etc!
Just sit outside! can be just outside your front door, next to an open window, or in the woods (whatever you can manage)
Take your daily activities outside!! Read in the garden, eat your breakfast under the sun etc
Create art from nature - paint rocks, press flowers, create patterns using feathers or leaves as paintbrushes/stamps
Cloud watching!
More High Energy Activities:
Go for a walk or hike outside and take some offerings. Introduce yourself to the trees and plants and streams and leave them a gift.
If there's one nearby, visit a local farmer's market and buy some local produce; honey, meat, vegetables, fruit, etc! Chat to the sellers and talk about their practices and produce
Do a small spell outside! Find a secluded, comfortable spot and invite the spirits to observe your spellwork - let them get used to your energy and way of working
Make a small diary of your time outside! Don't worry about filling it in regularly, just whenever you have the energy! Write down when the bees start coming out or leaves return after winter. What plants stay during the cold season?
Research local plants and come up with your own correspondences based on their ecology/medicinal use/folklore etc
Go on a walk to see what plants and animals exist in your area! Research them - are they native? Invasive? What is their ecology? Medicinal uses? Even the most urban areas tend to have some wildlife!
Join a local facebook group for birdwatching!
Research your area and figure out what plants or animals would be native, or used to live there - create artwork or something to honour and remember them
Research gardening groups nearby - some cities will have volunteer gardening projects or local groups that help maintain natural spaces! See if any would be feasible for you to join and get out there
Join a local allotment or community garden if you have the means - do some weeding, plant some tomatoes, say hello to the coal tits nesting in the old shed!
If you have the means - invest in a hardy houseplant! Name it, research its care and talk to it! Make a ritual out of watering and talking to it.
Take an online ecology course! Free courses exist and can be super interesting!
Watch youtube videos on a favourite taxa and make notes - build your own knowledge at a pace you're comfortable with on the things you're interested in!
Invite some nature spirits in for a meal - cook something you enjoy and set the table (if you can) for the spirits. Enjoy a meal with them.
Please add any suggestions you have below and I can add them! Everyone has unique energy levels and capabilities, but I hope that I've given people a quick idea of things they can do, if they want!

Scaredy Cat
platonic Bucky Barnes x Alpine!Reader (eventual Steve Rogers x shapeshifter!Reader)
Summary: While settling into your simple new life, a knock at the door sends you reeling. Bucky is there to comfort you.
part of Companion Animal (see previous or series)
Warnings for traumatic past (death of a parent, not explicit; alcoholism). While none of it warrants restricting this post to 18+, please be conscious of your media consumption and your limits. There is still fluff to sandwich the angst! WC ~1.6k
“That’s…uh—” Bucky stares at the wadded sock you dropped at his foot “—that’s very helpful, thank you.”
One of his socks is navy and one is black, but Bucky hasn’t noticed. You are helping out. He’s not getting it.
Don’t make me bite your mismatched ankle, you think. Instead, you swat the sock toward his left foot.
He picks it up.
You meow and step on his toes.
“Alpine, what are yo—“
Finally. Bucky hooks a finger beneath the hem of his pant, curiously looking back and forth between you, the wadded offering, and his blunder.
“Sweet girl, how did you get so smart?”
You trill an obvious answer before he mumbles, “little too smart,” like he’s suspicious.
Maybe you shouldn’t have pushed, but you know from Bucky’s rants to you that he worries about being put together. He always wants to give the impression he cares for himself. Not everyday is easy. Not everyday is like that. Truthfully, some days he doesn’t, and you make sure to stand beside his houseplants and cry loudly.
The routine helps. Nature helps. Getting out of bed helps. Looking sharp helps.
You help, and he seems very pleased but slightly annoyed by that. He likes you much better than the therapist though.
Bucky dutifully changes the garment and heads to the kitchenette, cracking open a can of tuna (human-grade, thank you very much) and spooning some into a shallow steel bowl.
“Half for you,” he sing-songs. “Half for me.”
You overplay the joyful, grumbling, gobbling noises as you eat your tasty shreds because he always gets a kick out of them. “Slow down,” he usually tells you, “it’s not like you’ll never be fed again.”
The doorbell startles you both.
Bucky cranes his neck to stare at it. No visitors have come since you waltzed in a few weeks ago.
“Sorry to bother—“ loud knocking this time “—but my kid is missing and I just—“
Bucky’s already wrenching the door open, concern contorting his face.
“Your kid?”
“Yes, I—my daughter. She ran away—“ you know that voice “—at the end of last month. Have you seen this girl?”
You’re frozen as Bucky takes the photo from your father to assess.
“This is…not a ‘kid.’”
“No, well, right, but they always are, I guess. She’s grown but that’s why I’m asking around. We live one neighborhood over, and the police won’t do anything since…”
“Haven’t seen her,” Buck offers, relaxing his grip on the door so it swings open the rest of the way.
Dad lays eyes on you and smiles softly.
“We used to have a cat just like that one,” he says with a new weight to his voice. Your father looks a disheveled wreck. He should, he deserves to, but you don’t have to witness it any more than you already have.
You abandon your food and race down the hall to hide under the bed.
He won’t take you. Bucky would never let him take you, would he?
Though muffled, you can still hear their conversation.
“Our cat didn’t much like me either. Preferred my wife, god rest her soul—“ how dare he speak about her “—but then she got out and ran away.”
“Your daughter or the cat?” Bucky sounds perturbed even through the sympathetic worry.
“It’s, uh, the cat ran away, an—and then my daughter went missin—and before you ask,” your father rushes, “I know she’s missing because she didn’t take anything with her. No ID. No cash. Nothing.”
A long pause follows. Bucky grumbles something too low to understand, and Dad thanks him for his time anyway. You distinctly hear Bucky call back to say he’ll keep an eye out.
So I can never change back, you realize, except you aren’t sure you could if you wanted.
Dad was supposed to be there. It was his job to look after Mom, the only job he had left after he was laid off. You’d been caring for her constantly before then, feeding her, bathing her, and talking to her while Princess the shock-white cat lay curled in her lap. Mom couldn’t even lift an arm to pet her. She could talk though, and she wanted so badly for you to have a life. She wished you’d go out more, see friends, meet someone special, and that wonderful woman never said one word against the man drinking himself into a stupor every night, unemployed and aimless, wasting away like a corroding anchor on the sea floor, pulling the whole family with him.
You smoosh yourself against an old suitcase tucked by the wall, listening to Bucky’s socked feet approach.
He was your father, and still she wanted you to trust him. He couldn’t even handle a day. You went out, shared lunch with some girls you hadn’t seen in ages, browsed a whole mall with them once you couldn’t stop chatting, shopped, agreed to go out for drinks, even spiffed up at our of their apartments for the night. Of course, you called Dad to check in several times, but when he didn’t pick up just as you all ordered from the bar, you promised you’d give him until the glass was empty to call back.
He could handle one day. Mom loved him, and he loved her. He could handle one day, you thought.
He didn’t call back.
Dad didn’t pick up as you called frantically the whole way home. Princess bolted when you opened the door; the cat had only ever loved Mom, and somehow, you knew.
She was gone. Mom died because your father passed out drunk. You can’t forgive him. You can’t forgive him for so, so many things, but as the next two days demanded you make decisions he still could not be bothered to help with, you cracked. You stormed out, blood boiling in your veins, and watched none other than Princess sneak off into the shadows, moving onto better things, going anywhere but back to that house.
It just…happened. You watched her, you wanted it, you willed yourself to be that cat who could just walk away, and it just happened.
Bucky peeks under the drape of sheets over the bed frame.
“Hey, pretty lady, you okay?”
No.
“Did he scare you?” Yes. “He’s gone now.” Good. “Do you wanna come out?”
You aren’t sure.
This house is different, but it’s safe. You aren’t really a cat, but you are now. And the first man you met after changing just happened to be kind, generous, and as damaged as you.
You’re still scared, so you hiss at Bucky.
Mom was your whole life for so long that there’s nothing to go back to. If he doesn’t let you belong here, you have only more nothing, and you don’t know how to change back. You can’t be sure you ever will.
Bucky shifts to sit by the foot of his bed next to the comforter he sometimes sleeps on. He likes to say his ‘leaving the bed to the lady,’ but you know it’s from nightmares.
He drums his fingers playfully on the wooden floor. “Alpine…” he coos.
You poke your head out to see Bucky wearing a sad smile.
“If you like it here, you’re welcome here.”
How does he know?
Hit by a wave of remembrance and his open acceptance, you fall over, stretching your paw out to him.
He takes it between three giant fingers as if he’s holding your hand.
“I know, girl. I know.” He does! “This is your home.”
You’re basically stuck now. Happy though. Happy with Bucky.
Hiding still. Hiding in plain sight. But maybe that part—the pain and the fear—won’t last forever.
You blink your wide eyes slowly, rolling your claws forward to curve around his thumb that much more, not enough to hurt, never enough to hurt Bucky.
He pulls his hand back, but you hang on, your fluff making you glide on the wood boards.
“Hey, hey,” he feigns disappointment, “I’m tryna be nice to you, girlie.” He swings you back and gently like a little rag doll, sweeping the floor. “Oh, you enjoy that, do you?”
Bucky adjusts to hold your arm more securely and continues to play, tickled by your empty threats of teeth you won’t let sink in.
Only a few minutes later, he sighs and squeezes your paw. “I’ve got to go.”
He picks himself up and dusts off, though he keeps his space quite clean, lifting both pant legs slightly.
“How do I look? Acceptable? Any more critiques?”
You can’t stop yourself from staring up at him sadly. He is a comfort, yes, but you shouldn’t be greedy with his time. He’s given you so much already.
“Honey…it’s okay—“ he bends to pet your head and the velvet spot behind your ear “—I’ll be back soon.”
You believe him. You believe he means it or, at least, intends to return. You can only manage a small chirp.
As you walk him to the door, he reminds you to finish your snack, drink your water, and take a nice nap. Though you sit back on your haunches in defiance of the well wishes, Bucky shrugs on his leather jacket and sends a quick kiss and wink your way.
“See ya later, pretty girl.”

So so excited to share my @mcytblrholidayexchange gift for @follow-the-compass-home! My concept was to combine a bunch of prompts together into one AU.
The premise is a modern-fantasy roommate situation where Tango, Bdubs, and Etho live together in an apartment. The only issue is that none of them are human, but they're all trying desperately to blend in, even though they don't really understand humanity as a concept.
More information can be found below the cut, and an introductory fic snippet can be found here (x)!
Downstairs Neighbors AU
Prompts used as inspiration:
Focus on Tango, Etho, and Bdubs
Include Boatem
Story told from Grian's perspective
Hybrid/inhuman AU
Angst with a happy ending
Emphasis on character dynamics
Here's a summary!!!
Tango, Etho, and Bdubs found each other by looking for roommates on Craigslist. They live in a 4-bedroom apartment together.
Tango is a spirit who wanted to interact with the world in a physical sense, so he built himself a body. He's basically just a ghost possessing an android (but unlike ghosts, he was never alive; he came into being as a fully-formed spirit). He doesn't adhere to normal bodily necessities like food, water, or sleep, which is convenient but also heavily concerning from an outsider's perspective.
Etho is a specific kind of shapeshifter called a mimic. He doesn't have a true form, but can copy the shape and mannerisms of most living creatures. The only constant across all of his appearances is a scarred left eye and white hair. Unfortunately, it takes practice to nail specific species characteristics, so he often forgets what he's supposed to look like and falls into uncanny valley. He wears a mask to cover his more noticable facial slipups.
Bdubs is some sort of plant creature (he doesn't really understand it himself). He has a perfect internal clock and sleeps, without fail, for 12 hours every night. He spends a lot of time in the unoccupied bedroom-- he uses it as a makeshift greenhouse, and it's filled with grow lights and humidifiers. He loves taking care of houseplants, but it's also a cover for him to spend time under the grow lights. Without enough light & water he gets lethargic.
Bdubs, Etho, and Tango, henceforth referred to as BET, all assume that the others are human. But since none of them know how to act human, they continuously pick up stranger and stranger habits from each other.
BET are close friends with Impulse & Skizzleman, who live together across the hall. Their upstairs neighbors are Grian, Pearl, Mumbo, and Scar, who are also besties with Imp & Skizz. BET and Boatem don't know each other well, but Grian especially thinks his neighbors are really odd.
Like BET, Grian is not human, and neither are the rest of his roommates. But they all know about each other, and Grian especially is really good at knowing how to act natural in public places. He's an avian shapeshifter, who can take the form of either a scarlet macaw or a human. Unlike Etho, both forms come equally naturally to Grian, and the shapeshifting process is a lot easier for him.
(Imp & Skizz are not human either-- they are a demon and an angel respectively. But, like Grian, they're really good at blending in when in public.)
One day, Grian gets injured on a flight and accidentally ends up on BET's balcony instead of his own. He's too disoriented to shift back into his human form or fly away, so Bdubs and Etho find him outside their door. Tango calls Impulse over in the hopes that he knows how to fix the random-injured-parrot crisis, but the only result is that Grian and Impulse start to truly take note of how strange their neighbors' living situation is. Incidents like the one pictured above arise (i.e. everyone finding out that there is not a singular scrap of food to be found in the entire apartment).
Ok that's all the rambling I'll do in this post, but I hope you enjoyed! Happy holidays!!

Practice grounding techniques; give meditation in nature (or to nature sounds) a try
Engage in relaxing activities, especially when you're feeling overwhelmed; this can include drawing, painting, crocheting, writing, etc.
Take an herbal/salt bath (USE BATH SALTS; MAKE SURE HERBS DON'T GO DOWN YOUR DRAIN!!!)

Exercise/stretch; move your body in some way
-
For now, this is my list of discreet ways to worship Gaia! I'll likely add more later on. May Gaia embrace you in her loving arms, if you wish her to. 💚

I have so many Thoughts about S&co Sherlock Holmes, so have my headcanons:
- He was raised, at least partially, by his grandparents. Maybe by the french, maternal grandmother(NAVA). His oldtimey poshness is wonderful, but I can only explain it with some oldmoney, eccentric pensionist giving him a weirdly free, yet emotionally constipated upbringing.
- The houseplants of 221b and a are in pristine health because of him.
- He doesn't have any actual diagnoses. This is basically canon, but I'm putting it on here anyways. He doesn't, but Mycroft does. It's the classic instance of the more "severe case" or "more affected" sibling getting the help they need. And the symptoms of the other "less affected" sibling are overlooked. He also self medicates, which makes sense if he doesn't have access to prescription meds.
- He only wears clothes that fit. Oversized or skinny styles are the inventions of Satan himself. They're straight from sensory hell, and Sherlock agrees with me. He's very picky with fabrics too, preferring natural to synthetic. He detests wool against his skin though, so he wears tights, or long underwear beneath wool trousers in winter. He also gets a lot of clothes adjusted or made by a tailor(Who also did his grandparent's tailoring).
- He shaves his legs and armpits aswell as his face every day.
- If you ask him about his sexuality/gender identity you'll get a "that's none of your business". If John asked him, he'd get a "labels limit the vast expanse of the human experience". In truth he doesn't fucking know, it's weird and muddy, like the rest of his identity. He's read every book on the subject, watched so much porn, had a lot of one night stands, but ultimately comes up with: sex and relationships get in the way of my work, so I'll ignore that. Gender is a social construct, so I get to decide what a man is. And I'm queer, I guess.
- Dogperson
- He plays Mendelsohn for John, like in the canon. Not because John has asked him to(John doesn't know who Mendelsohn is), but because he's made a careful study to garner John's reaction to different composers. He's been doing the same with Mariana, and is slowly but surely honing in on Mozart. Both of these composers bore him, but he doesn't care when it's for his friends <3
- Despite not liking to dance (solitary cyclist part 2), he's very good! He was forced to do ballet and ballroom dancing as a kid. He's mustering up the courage to ask Mariana to dance salsa with him on their next pub escapade, but he always puts it off.
-FRECKLES. A LOT OF 'EM.

[Domestic Chores]
Rika x Reader, Leon x Reader, Steven x Reader
Rika <3
Rika is very on top of household chores, despite her relaxed nature
We all have that one chore we hate having to do around the house, however, even esteemed members of the elite four
Rika hates washing the dishes
Honestly, she'd be happy to eat exclusively off paper plates
You bet that every time it's her turn to wash up she insists on you keeping her company
"You can't leave your ol' pal to suffer through this alone..."
"You're my girlfriend Rika, not my pal-"
Rika is not above picking you up and setting you down on the counter beside her
She tries to kiss you until you have push her away and remind her to clean
Absolutely puts on some quiet music and insists you tell her about your day
And, naturally, she blows soap bubbles at you if you get distracted or silent
Expect plenty of dishwash bubble fights with her around
If there's anything that makes washing up fun for Rika, it's having you around
Leon <3
Leon is a domestic king
Real husband material right there
Unfortunately, there's one chore he can't be trusted to do alone
Grocery shopping
After multiple failed attempts in the past, it became a mutual agreement that grocery shopping would be a joint outing
He tries to make it like a mini weekly date, though
Buys you both drinks beforehand, coffee or bubble tea are Leons go-to choices
As you go through the store Leon is often in charge of the shopping list
He does always keep a hand on the trolley as you steer it, and him, through the store
"Oh, we forgot onions, I'll run back and grab them! ...Stop giving me that look."
He has good intentions but as soon as he's out of your sight it'll be hours before you find him again
Exactly why he needs to either hold you or the trolley
Leon is also definitely the type to slip extra goodies into the shopping when you aren't looking, usually things he knows you like
Steven <3
Steven has never had any issues staying on top of chores, when he is home
Having a regular cleaner that comes in a couple times a month certainly helps with that
Though, something he insists on caring for himself are the houseplants
What started as an off hand joke Wallace made has now turned into a new hobby for Steven
He does include you in it too, from shopping to repotting to watering
After his extensive houseplant research he'll point out and id any plant he sees
"Look at that one! Most people would think it's a monstera but it's actually a pothos, did you know they can have fenestrated leaves too?"
He gets you both matching Pokémon watering cans too
Steven has a wailmer one and he got you a load one
Before he goes on trips he entrusts you with plants care, too
Steven asks how they are when you two call, and when he gets back you can expect a very sweet 'thank you' kiss from the champion

Some ideas on how to (re-)connect with nature ♡
⭑ Take a walk through the forest or a park, don't use your phone or listen to music, rather listen to the sounds of nature actively. What can you hear?
⛤ Collect some leaves, rocks, pine cones, feathers or anything else that you think is pretty! Maybe use your bounty to decorate your home with it?
⭑ Go touch some grass! No, this is not a joke, let's go feel the grass between your fingers and toes.
⛤ Try to find some flowers and smell them, what can you compare the scents with? Preferably, go outside and find wild flowers instead if bought ones!
⭑ Take a bath in a lake or dip your hands and feet into the water (a river is perfect, too!) Close your eyes and just feel the water.
⛤ Have a little picnic on a meadow, at the lake, in the forest or at any other peaceful spot. It's a date with yourself and with nature!
⭑ If this is an option for you: do some gardening work. Get your hands all dirty with earth and mud!
⛤ Pick some wild flowers from a meadow and make a little bouquet with them. (But please don't rip out the roots!)
⭑ Talk to the trees. Yes, this sounds silly but a tree is a perfect listener and companion if you need to talk something off of your chest.
⛤ Watch the sunset or sunrise. Enjoy this magical moment. How many colors can you spot?
⭑ Get some houseplants and take good care of them every day. (If you have pets, make sure your new friends are not poisonous for them!)
⛤ Observe. What kind of birds, plants, flowers and trees can you find in your environment? What kind of animals can you meet in the forest nearby? (Maybe write your observations down in a notebook!)
⭑ Lay down on some moss, grass or sand and just exist and feel how the earth carries you.
⛤ Go plant some flowers!
⭑ Spend some time in nature without social media (maybe leave your phone at home!)
⛤ Take a walk in the rain and / or dance in the rain.
⭑ Watch a thunderstorm from a safe spot
⛤ Craft a moss jar (these are so cute and perfect if you want some more nature in your own home!)
⭑ Keep little jars or flasks of the elements in your home (examples: earth - moss/earth/sand, water - water from a lake/river or collected rain water, air - a feather, fire - ashes, a used match)
⛤ Be more attentive to your environment: when do you notices changes in the seasons?
⭑ Have a self-love day, because you are a part of nature as well and deserve your own love!
⛤ Try to actively appreciate nature: be more thankful for the food, the water, the warmth nature provides us
#be kind to yourself. 🧸#i love you! 🩷🍃#cottagecore#cottageblr#naturecore#advice#cottage core#connection#cottage aesthetic#grandmacore#cottagecore aesthetic#farmcore#nature#nature lover#text post#mine#thyming#witchcore#witchy#green witch#witches#witchcraft#witch community

how to survive a hurricane !
falling in love isn't about changing for someone. it's about learning to weather them. or, nagi seishiro is a houseplant, and you are a walking natural disaster.
nagi x gn!reader, mini series. reader is quite emotional & clumsy. italics r used for dramatic purposes. lowercase is not intended but i cba to turn autocaps on 😛 1.4k wc.
prev. • masterlist. • next.
1. Secure your foundation. (Hold on to who you are.)
“I presume you know why you’re here, yes ?” the counselor asks as you squirm in your seat, relentless under her gaze. you nod, although quite shyly, and she repeats the motion with a lot more assurance than you, urging you to go on.
“It’s about the gardening club, is it not ?” you ask, nibbling on the inside of your cheek. she lets out a small smile in return, and you look away. you do not need her pity.
The room you sit in is dim, even though large windows occupy two out of the four white walls, and you can see the students having lunch on the quad a few stories down. Since the ceiling lamp is turned off and her back is facing one of the only sources of natural light in the cramped space, the counselor’s face is darker than it should be, and she seems tired, almost older. The floor is padded with worn down carpet, indents of high heels and coffee stains visible. There are wooden cupboards and storage cabinets behind her, similar to the desk she leans on, and you know they are empty, because Hakuho High doesn’t have much to offer. She takes off her rectangle glasses and looks at you again. “I really appreciate all the effort you’ve put into organizing it, and I can tell it means a lot to you. Unfortunately, according to school policy, a club needs to have at least three active members to stay officially recognized. Right now, your club doesn’t meet that requirement, having only two members, yourself included, so I’m afraid we won’t be able to continue it as an official club for now.”
you nod unsurely. “And, as you may know, since you are a first year, school clubs are mandatory, so I thought we could use this session to find you a new club,” she continues, as she cleans the lenses of her glasses with a pale pink handkerchief, “How about-”
“What if I find another member ? for the gardening club, I mean. I’m sorry. For interrupting.” you cut her off, although your gaze immediately redirects itself to the ground out of shame. The counselor blinks, slowly, as if she was bewildered by your question.
“Well, hypothetically, if you did get a third member to join, then we would be able to officially recognise it as a club. Although, it is hypothetical, because the motion to dismiss it has already been set. You’d need to find said third party before the end of classes today.”
You gulp. She does not pause longer than needed, already continuing the meaningless flickers of her wrist on the mouse of her computer to scroll through the list of existing, official clubs at Hakuho. “How about a sports club ? Or art, maybe. We have poetry and theatre as well,” she goes on, but you drown her words out. She simply does not understand the importance of the gardening club. She does not know of the countless lunch hours spent with Shijiki, the other member and your best (and probably only) friend, in the greenhouse, the trouble you had put yourself through just for your work to be dismissed. She did not understand the safe place it represented, or the memories it held. She probably did not care either.
However, her words pull you out of your trance. “So, what do you think ? Do any of these speak to you ?” You blink back the tears that are threatening to spill, and let out a meek ‘i’m not sure.’
She sighs in response, placing her glasses back in front of her eyes. “Well, what do you like to do ?”
“Um, tending to plants. Planting seeds. Gardening.” You answer after a few seconds, but she only sighs louder. “Right. But apart from that ?” Her voice does not carry that concealed pity and kindness anymore, only annoyance.
“I, uhm, I don’t know. I’m sorry.”
The room falls silent again. You don’t like it here anymore. The walls are closer now, the carpet dirtier, and your seat seems itchier than it was before you first sat down. Your legs ache, urge to stretch, to leave and your fingers have curled so deep into your palm you’re afraid they might draw blood. You wish you could just get up, scream at her fatigued face and cry, but instead your foot bounces up and down, quickly, repetitively, until the tap tap tap of your shoe against the carpet is the only thing that can be heard.
“Well then, how would you describe yourself ? I’m sure at least one of these clubs here is searching for a profile like yours.” She asks, a faux smile plastered on her face, the crookedness of her teeth worsening your unease.
If you were to ask Shijiki, she would describe you as a reckless person, perhaps. Or maybe a stupid one. Tap tap tap. Scratch that, she would probably say careless, because of how much money you had spent renovating the old shed on the far right of the courtyard, which was now doomed to become nothing but an empty shed again. Not a greenhouse. Not a safe place. Just another hidden area for students to make out. Tap tap tap. Other people would say obnoxious. Loud. Hyperactive. Tap tap tap. But your teachers always reprimand you for being too quiet, they encourage you to participate more, to pay attention. Tap tap tap. How would the counselor describe you ? Distant ? Indecisive ? Or,
“Clumsy.” is the adjective you finally settle for, and you watch as the counselor's brow lifts in something akin to amusement. “You would describe yourself as… Clumsy ?”
“Yes. When I was seven, I broke my mother’s favourite vase after she had instructed me to be careful around it several times. She got mad, of course, so I spent the night trying to fix the broken pieces with superglue. I think that resumes what type of person I am.” The counselor does not answer. She just stares at you, perplexed. “Ah. I guess you could add ‘oversharer’ to the list.” you joke, although she does not seem amused anymore. You do not tell her about how your classmates whisper when they think you cannot hear, how they call you ‘a walking disaster’ or ‘a catastrophe waiting to happen’.
“Right. We’ll go over this tomorrow, it seems our time is up for today.” Is what she decides to answer and even though you should be grateful for the opportunity to finally leave, you can’t help but feel uneasy. That dismissal is nothing good, it makes you feel a special type of distress in your stomach, one that makes your eyes water. You nod in response.
“Could you please tell the next student to come in ?” she asks politely, repositioning her glasses on her oily nose. You hum, but you do not look at her. The weight of the world is suddenly crashing down upon you, and it feels even more real now that you’re standing up. You leave, quietly, and spot a student right next to the door. He is crouched down, his white hair obscuring his face and his phone in his hand. You know that mop of limbs, the one that sits in the back of class, asleep half of the time. Somehow, you’re not really surprised hes here as well, because Nagi putting effort into something like a club doesn’t feel quite right.
“Nagi, the counselor is waiting for you.” You speak softly, like one would to a child because Nagi is the embodiment of an infant and because you’re afraid your voice will crack if you raise it ever so slightly. “Oh.” he replies as he gets up, but he does not thank you. He does not look back at you either, but you don’t really care, the only thing on your mind being how you will break the news to Shijiki. She won’t be half as devastated as you, that’s for sure, but she’ll still be sad because she knows how much the gardening club meant to you. A sigh leaves your lips, and silently, you make your way back to the small shed on the far right of the courtyard, where you know Shijiki will be waiting for you with both of your lunches and tissues. You inhale, deeply, and bring your sleeve up to your eye to absorb whatever droplets of disappointment have formed. However, by doing so, you temporarily blind yourself, and run into a few hurried students. The force of the impact sends you to the floor, and that is when the dam finally breaks. Because you truly are clumsy. A disaster waiting to happen.
