Anyone can connect to nature. Please, remove the mindset that nature is something *out there*. Nature is all around you.

The dandelions peeking through pavement cracks, the birds you don't notice on your windowsill, the brambles in the alleys, the storms and sunshine.

All of this is nature. You are surrounded by it. Notice it, learn about it. Write down when you notice the days getting longer, when more butterflies appear and when ripen blackberries ripen. Connect to the nature that lives outside your window, just past the boundary of your front door.

Watch nature documentaries, build a small windowsill garden, let the spider in your room corner stay for a while.

Connection is not determined by proximity, but by effort.

Hello, I was wondering if you might be able to speak a bit on offerings to spirits of deceased animals? I feel that, in case by case circumstances, divination could be used to find out what the particular spirit does and doesn’t like, but I was curious about your experience. Would you say animal spirits generally prefer offerings that correspond to their species’ natural diet during life? For example, would you find yourself offering milk to a bird spirit even though it would never consume it during it’s period of being alive, or would you be better off offering seeds? Would you find yourself collecting bug corpses to offer to an insectivorous Bat spirit or would you be able to offer cream and honey? Do preferences change in death or is it that the animal’s spirit can make use of the “spirit”/ “energy” the offering contains, regardless of how it fits into that animal’s diet during life? Curious to hear about your experience in this area, thanks.

Hello there,

This is an interesting question, and one that isn't necessarily easy to cleanly delineate. As you say, tastes in offerings can vary for individual spirits, and divination is, indeed, a good tool to make use of when in doubt.

Based on my own personal experience, the more recently a spirit has detached from its body, the more likely it is to prefer offerings that resemble what it would have eaten in life. This is particularly useful to have in mind if you’re hoping to draw out and entice an animal spirit. Even so, however, most spirits will still be drawn to/fed by certain things, even if they are prone to identifying more with their living habits when stirred. Honey is one such offering that will draw/appease most spirits, though there are others as well.

THE TEAM IS GROWING

Ok, so you know how Loki plopped me in front of Apollo recently and was like, "You work together now."? Well, back when I was doing those free rune readings, someone gave me an energy reading in return (I forgot who, but I'll edit to add their tag when I can!) In the reading, they mentioned a frog. I have had no previous connections to frogs, so I was very confused. But last month, I did a little journey to meet this apparent frog with Loki, and today, I did some tarot readings to learn more about the work they want to do together. (If you're wondering, it's hella shadow work. 🙄 But also connecting with more land spirits in regards to channeling and working with them in that capacity....but mostly shadow work.) I started looking up associations with frogs in different cultures. A lot of them mentioned transformation because of their life cycle (and working with a shapeshifter, it isn't super surprising such a creature might approach me/be recruited to help me). What stood out to me, though, was that the Japanese word for frog also means "to return." Images and items that look like frogs are given to people for safe travels so they can return home. I am not crazy familiar with Japanese culture, so I didn't know this. But that meaning really resonates with shadow work, I think. Because it's all about getting back to yourself and finding safety and comfort in yourself no matter what your struggles. So now I got Frog on my team.

THEN, because in my search for frog associations I found things about Chinese cultural associations, I started thinking about the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. My Trickster's Journey tarot deck is based on Monkey's journey in Journey to the West. In the Chinese zodiac, I was born in the year of the Monkey. I was feeling a little bit of a nudge and pull there. So I also talked with Monkey about what working together would be about. It's sounds like we'd be practicing some shrewd business and working on charisma to help in all my business-related dealings. Essentially taping into the energy and vibes associated with the year of the Monkey in the zodiac. With the possible rune readings gig on the horizon and my general desire to do that, that all makes perfect sense. So it would seem like Monkey's joining my spiritual Board of Directors as well.

As of right now, the apparent major players helping me out right now are

Loki, for general love, support and nudging, and being my home base (which also includes their kin) ❤️🏠

Apollo, for taking better care of my health and working on creating structure in my life.🗓🥗

Frog, for making sure I properly address all my emotions, even the dark and heavy ones I'd rather just ignore (and expand my channeling practice with land spirits). 🐸👥

And Sun Wukong, for building up my charisma and confidence to help me be the business person I really want to be, and just generally play the parts I need to play to get me where I want to go. 🐵👔 (OMG searching for these emojis I typed in "monkey" then "business"....like we're getting into literal monkey business. There's that trickster energy 🤣)

We'll see how these new developments play out. I still feel like I need to know Monkey a lot more before getting into the weeds with him. But maybe not? I guess we'll see lol. (So if anyone has any experience with him or knows others that do or know other good resources, let me know!)

What would be the proper term for a witch who works with Animal Spirits, Nature, Herbs, Plants in general, what kind of witch would this be? Im Kemetic but have heavy emphasis on Animal Spirits (including Sacred Animals of the Netjeru) which is the main focus of my practice including Shapeshifting.

Side note: how do I find accurate reliable sources for Herbal Magic, not just Herbal remedies? I would like to find local ones for NA but have a feeling most sources would end up being Native American but am not sure. If so are there any European sources that would be open for practice?

Secrets are a big theme today, we might be going through some kind of transformation which is safer to keep private than to openly speak about at the moment. Maybe someone or something is completely eluding us and we are unable to see things clearly. There's an uneasy and somewhat slippery aspect here, something is likely hard to grasp and that may very well be on purpose, something or someone wishes to remain hidden from our knowledge. This can also indicate long journeys and big emotional and physical transformations, this could be indicating the beginning of a very long transformative journey, though this journey is occult in nature skewed in mystery and secrets.

On Bear

My oldest spirit friend, or at least my oldest spirit friend who I can prove was once a living spirit, is a bear that I met at a state park in the mountains.

I found him by following my nose if you get my drift. (I was a true crime nut so I thought I was going to find a person because what else smells that bad? In the woods, the answer is a bear)

I think that it was the first or second summer that my partner and I were dating. We drove up into the mountains for the gorgeous scenic vistas and decided to stop at this fir-lined state park.

That's where we met Bear.

The vultures had barely gotten to him, and they unwillingly scattered but stood by expectantly.

I've always had a thing with death. I can't walk away from it. I must lay witness.

I don't remember what I said so long ago, but judging from what I would say now, it would have been something like this:

Hello, bear. I'm so sorry, bear. I love you, bear. I hope that the next life treats you well.

Bear was the first fresh corpse that I ever found. I grew up in a hunting community so I have seen some things, but when it's game, you don't see the maggots. You don't stare into the holes where their eyes should be. You don't get to meet the vulture clean-up crews.

I was young. An adult, but very young. Nobody had taught me how to talk to the dead. I only had one living grandparent yet we did not go to visit our dead in the cemeteries.

The smell that had drawn us to bear was almost nonexistent now that we were close. I remember feeling immense grief that this beautiful animal had left our world, but also a deep knowing that it would return to the earth to someday become a part of life again. And then, something else.

Bear was still here. Bear is slow and quiet; he doesn't like to intrude. He feels a bit like hibernation. He doesn't need you to notice him.

But he does like the attention.

Both my partner and I felt bear stir that day. It was almost as if his spirit hadn't yet arisen from his corpse but in speaking his name, I awakened him. He was slow and kind. He didn't mind that he was dead. But he appreciated that we had cared enough to stop and say goodbye to him.

My partner and I talked about Bear for months afterward. Neither of us had spoken about our spirituality prior but we both had a background in working with nature and nature spirits. Mine was more geared towards witchcraft whereas they had been trained by crazy trackers at a lodge on the AT. Without mentioning it to the other, we had both experienced bear's spirit.

We decided to go back and see him.

It was late Autumn and much colder. A couple of months had passed since we had found bear and we weren't sure if we would find any remains of him. In the mountains, there are many large scavengers.

All the tall grass had turned to seed so it was much easier to find him. We found most a skull, one side of his jaw, a large section of spine (intact and not), and some small pieces that looked like they may have been part of his paw. But, more interestingly, bear was still there!

He had been waiting for us. Just like we had been waiting for him.

That's the thing about bear. He's not loud or intrusive, but if you listen for him, he makes himself known.

Bear's body had fed the forest, but Bear had nowhere to go. I don't really understand if bear asked to come home with me, or if I asked bear if he wanted to come home with me, but in some way, we both agreed that was the thing to do.

And that's how we met bear. These days, a piece of his spine lives on my altar with the remains of my cat and the ancestors. I don't "work" with bear (he sleeps most of the time), but he is a wonderful companion for cold winter days and a reminder that it's okay to slow down when you don't have anywhere you need to be.

I work with the fair folk, mythological spirits, demons, sirens, elementals and earth spirits, animal spirits, and my own creations. This is the short list, as I am bound to discover more and more that I'm bound to work with.

I work with chaos and the energy that started the world, the universe, and several upon several deities and spirits -- my own collection of supports and teachers and guides. I love them dearly, and will continue to until the end of time.

I am just now looking to start on the left-hand-path, and work slightly outside my comfort zone. I've always been interested, but have just now felt the urge to extend my own hand and give it a try.

The Wolf is very well known to appear as an animal spirit. They help us look at how we work together with those around us, and our environment too. Their howls can be heard from many miles away. Perhaps a wolf wants your voice to be heard too - in that case, this spread could be useful!
