In 1889, Frank Lloyd Wright, then a 22-year-old draftsman, secured a $5,000 loan from his boss, the great Louis Sullivan, to build a home for himself and new wife, Catherine Tobin. The loan was to be repaid via deductions from Wright's pay. The location of the home, Oak Park, at the time, was a sleepy village that served as a retreat from the bustling city of Chicago. It was originally settled by familes relocating from the East in the 1830s. In the latter decades of the 19th century, elaborate homes typifying of the era were constructed. Wright's home, built in the shingle style, was a departure from everything else around. The shingle style was the preferred choice of many wealthy East Coast families building summer residences in places like Newport, Rhode Island. Some of the notable architects that worked in the style are McKim, Mead & White, Wilson Eyre, Jr., Bruce Price, H. H. Richardson and Wright's previous employer, Joseph Lyman Silsbee. In 1895, with his immediate family expanded, Wright made several changes to his modest home, including the conversion of the original kitchen into a new, enlarged dining room, seperate bedrooms for his children in what was his former studio, conversion of the upstairs nursery into a dayroom for Catherine and the addition of a new kitchen and awe-inspiring, barrel-vaulted children's playroom above it. In 1898, in an attempt to maintain a more balanced professional and personal life, Wright decided to build a new studio that was adjacent to his home, facing Chicago Avenue and connected by a passageway. The Home & Studio is where Frank Lloyd Wright's ideals of what American architecture should be took shape. #Chicagoland #OakParkIl #ShingleStyle #VictorianArchitecture #ChiArchitecture #Chitecture #FrankLloydWright #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #VisitOakPark #EnjoyIllinois #ThisPlaceMatters #NationalHistoricLandmark #WrightSites (at Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CP9pZcODMPY/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Xmas Lights at Lansdowne” The Aberdeen Pavilion located in Canada’s capital city Ottawa, is the last surviving Canadian Victorian grand agricultural exhibition space from the 19th c. It was built in 1898 & named after Canada’s Governor General at that time Lord Aberdeen. Thru years of deterioration the city contemplated demolishing the building but the community won the petition to have it restored. The building became a national historical site in 1983. After renovations of the “cattle castle” it was reopened to the public in 1994. The Pavilion got the name “Cattle Castle” because of the original use for the building but also because of the sculptures.
The architect was inspired by the Crystal Palace at Hyde Park in London England. There is a mix of classical & whimsy due to the agricultural motifs including cattle sculptures incorporated into the pediments above the doors. This pavilion was named 1 the top 500 most significant buildings of the last millennium by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The interior is an open plan with 33,000 square footage & soaring ceilings held up by many giant steel arches. Captured Ottawa Canada Dec 18, 2020.

Today in #history: #OnThisDay, October 15, 1966 the National Historic Preservation Act was signed into law. This act also established the @nationalnps, more formally set up the @nationalhistoriclandmarknps, and the President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation @usachp. It was the most comprehensive preservation law the United States had ever known. The act established permanent institutions and created a clearly defined process for historic preservation in the United States. Pictured is the colonnade at Princeton Battlefield State Park, a National Historic Landmark. #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explorenj #otd #todayinhistory #princetonbattlefeld #historicpreservationact #historicpreservation #nationalregister #nrhp #nationalhistoriclandmark #achp #njstateparks #statepark #nj #princetonnj #princeton #nhlyes (at Princeton Battlefield State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3qME_0n7Cb/?igshid=1tzyqwk26gv5s

Good afternoon, everyone. We have a very special anniversary to recognise. 40 Years Ago, Today - (Friday) December 17th, 1982: Sandy Hook gains its most important designation, as it officially becomes a National Historic Landmark. It's full title is Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark. There are over 90,000 National Historic Properties in the United States. Of these, only 2,500 are National Historic Landmarks. That places our beloved Fort Hancock / Sandy Hook in the top THREE PERCENT of America's historically significant properties, which is right where it deserves to be, and where shall always stay. ❤️ ** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photo: marinas.com #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #nationalhistoriclandmark #nationalparkservice #nps #gatewaynationalrecreationarea #coastartillery #newjerseyhistory #njhistory #monmouthcountyhistory #monmouthcountynj #monmouthcounty #localhistorymatters #historyiscool (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPlYqMPbik/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Swipe 👈🏾 for a history lesson: 📌 It’s the 65th anniversary of the famous US historical story of the “Little Rock Nine”, a group of nine African American students who were the first to integrate in America & enroll in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. 📝 As a Black American woman who currently lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, I feel compelled to share this story. 📌 Elizabeth Eckford, the lady in slide two, had to walk to school bus stop by herself before the rest of the 8 showed up because of a miscommunication. Do you know she was screamed & yelled at by her soon to be fellow white students simply because they did not want her there? I can’t imagine how she must have felt and she is still alive living in Little Rock today. 📝 America has come a long way, but we must never forget the trials people of color had to face and we still have milestones to go. 📌This is a National Historic site & this story is taught in American schools. ❤️ LOVE one another my friends. It makes a WORLD of difference. Also, check my photography skills in the last slide lmao. 😉📸 . . . . #lovewins #blackhistory #littlerock #arkansasblogger #arkansas #nationalhistoriclandmark #usablogger #ushistory #explorehistory #explorearkansas #littlerocknine #arkansasphotography #americanhistory #blacktravelmovement #blacktravelfeed #travelblogging #knowyourhistory #traveltheusa #travelingpost #swipeleft⬅️ (at Little Rock, Arkansas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiL68Lrtbs2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
