Shared from @debbdebb101 . Black Point Estate and Gardens One of my favorite stories from our guided tour of this magnificent Victorian “cottage” involved the children of the household. When the kids were young, they all ate at the table on the back porch. When they turned 12 or so, each child was given a young goat to tend. If they could keep the goat healthy and fed and cleaned up after it for the entire summer, then they “earned their place” at the table- the big table in the grand dining room with all the adults. If the goat didn’t make it, then one more year eating on the porch with the other kids. (Er, children, not goats!) Hearing stories like this, and learning that one of the parents would play the song “Skedaddle!” when it was time for the kids to run up to bed, helped me better envision the real family that used to live here. . By the way, this house is still accessible only by boat. The estate is considered to be one of the most elaborate Frank Lloyd Wright designs. It is one of 3 multi-building complexes designed by Wright. Shared from @historicminnesota . The Laverty-Martindale House is known as the best example of the Italianate style in La Crosse. Thomas Laverty started building a house on the site in 1859 but was unable to finish it when he returned home disabled from serving in the Civil War. In 1868, Stephen Martindale purchased the house and completed it. More additions and alterations were made in 1884, and the home remained in the family until 1977. Just imagine all the land that surrounded this house when it was first built. It really has the feeling of an old farmhouse, and maybe that's why I love it so much. 3914 Trumbull Avenue was built in 1890 for Abraham S. Kinney, a clothing patternmaker. It was designed by Almon C. Varney, one of Detroit's most prominent architects during the Victorian period.
