This resource provides information about registering orchards or single fruit trees in the National Register of Historic Places. It also showcases the historical context of some orchards in the U.S. One such orchard is the Buckner Orchard at North Cascades National Park Service Complex here in Western Washington.

“In Lake Chelan National Recreation Area of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex, the Buckner Homestead Historic District contains a 90-year old apple orchard that reflects the revolutionary event in the modern period of orchard fruit growing: the discovery of the Delicious apple variety by the Stark brothers. This discovery transformed the growing of apples in the 20th century. Among the oldest trees of the Buckner orchard are the trees of the Common Delicious strain of the Delicious variety – Stark Brothers Nursery's name for the early, unimproved variety they acquired as “Hawkeye,” a red and yellow apple. The Buckner orchard is the oldest and largest known plantation of the variety in the United States and represents the advent of the Delicious variety before it was turned into a red apple, or Red Delicious variety, through strain selection in the 1920s.”

Good afternoon, everyone - we would like to offer a Very Happy 90th Birthday to one of America's most iconic locations - Radio City Music Hall. Tuesday, December 27th, 1932, the curtain goes up for the very first time at 1260 6th Avenue (Avenue Of The Americas). These images were taken between late November through December 26th, 1932 - she is seen here as quiet as a tomb, untouched and ready for the big step off - not unlike a grand ship just before her launching. In some of the photos, you'll see workmen putting on the finishing touches or a stray piece of equipment ready to be picked up and removed. The final image was taken on opening night - today - 9 decades ago. I wanted to share these in contrast to the flurry of activity that RCMH is still known for to this day. Ironically, Radio City had a catastrophic opening night - the live performance program ran from 8pm to 2am, and acts had to be crammed and many patrons simply up and left. It was a public relations nightmare. A month later, after restructuring and a few sackings, things turned around. Moving pictures were added to the rotation and the epic, ground-breaking "King Kong" was to premiere there in March, 1933. Ever since, Radio City has become the benchmark location for movie premieres, and some of the most popular music and theatrical performances of all time. Queen Anne. Built 1884. This home was a part of the Couch Family Investment Development and is perched on the edge of the Nob Hill, then referred to as the West End. Originally 8 adjacent homes, the remaining 4 are known as the “Irving Street Ensemble”. While 3 of the 4 were largely renovated in the 1970s after years of deterioration, this Queen Anne is virtually intact! Original molding, baseboards, wainscoting, fir floors, stairway balusters, etc. In the 1880s, Captain John Couch and family built some of Portland’s finest homes.
