Queen Anne. Built 1884. This home was a part of the Couch Family Investment Development and is perched on the edge of the Nob Hill, then referred to as the West End. Originally 8 adjacent homes, the remaining 4 are known as the “Irving Street Ensemble”. While 3 of the 4 were largely renovated in the 1970s after years of deterioration, this Queen Anne is virtually intact! Original molding, baseboards, wainscoting, fir floors, stairway balusters, etc. In the 1880s, Captain John Couch and family built some of Portland’s finest homes. The significance of the Irving Street houses lies primarily in the fact that they represent an intact collection of the modest Queen-Anne structures common to the area at the time! #portland #historic #historichomes #queenanne #historicportlandhomes #preservation #pnw #neportland #restoration #architecture #design #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #pdx #nobhill #realestate #pacificnorthwest #rosecity #stumptown (at Nob Hill, Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2XYX7vhqhV/?igshid=14yqzykzsw2gp

The Maple House. Constructed in 1939 by contractor Theo Sattler for $5,200. It is designed in the English Cottage style and is an excellent example of its kind! At a glance, a couple of its most striking features are the rolled eaves and the rough clinker brick facing. Clinker bricks get there shiny, blackened and partially-vitrified appearance during the firing process. Wet clay bricks are exposed to excessive heat and become vicous. Other architectural features include arched leaded glass window, arched door opening, asymmetrical massing, and front facing gable. #portland #historic #historichomes #english #englishcottage #cottage #historicportlandhomes #preservation #pnw #neportland #restoration #architecture #design #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #pdx #nobhill #realestate #pacificnorthwest #rosecity #stumptown (at NW Portland Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Qu18aBpMm/?igshid=1vet1d30953wo

Ayer-Shea House. Built 1892. Located in the historic Alphabet District, this home was designed in the Colonial Revival style by Whidden & Lewis, Portland’s leading architects of the period. It was built for Winslow B. Ayer, a wealthy lumberman and patron of the arts who lived there until 1904. Ayer was born in Bangor, Maine, attended MIT, and came to Portland in 1883 where he organize the Portland Cordage Company and Eastern & Western Lumber Companies. He was president of the Library Association and director of the Portland Art Association. He even led the drive to create the @portlandpubliclibrary and willed $900,000 to the @portlandartmuseum ! The Ayer-Shea House boasts a double pitched roof, central portico with free standing Tuscan columns, decorative roof cornice with scroll modillions and fret band, symmetrical two story semi circular bay windows, and pedimented dormers.

N Mississippi Queen Anne. Built 1898. 🏡Although broadly described as Victorian, this Queen Anne home on N Mississippi is perched just off the street and is now home to @psychicbarpdx ! It is in remarkable shape and may surprise you to learn that it was not included in the City’s Historic Resource Inventory. However, as recent as 2000, it was considered an “eligible/contributing” historic home by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office. It features a steep gable roof, asymmetrical massing, cut-away bay window, patterned shingles, spindle porch frieze, turned porch post, and stick balustrade. It’s a good example of the vernacular interpretation of the style. Hundreds of Portland homes are not included in the Resource Inventory. They will most certainly be featured here, as many serve their community—contributing to its identity, culture, and commerce. P.S. they have a pretty good raspberry cider on tap here. 🤓🍺 #portland #historic #historichomes #historicportlandhomes #preservation #pnw #neportland #historicplaces #history #queenanne #vernacular #victorian #nmississippi #mississippi #restoration #architecture #design #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #pdx #realestate #boiseneighborhood #pacificnorthwest #rosecity #stuptown (at Psychic) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1xrnD-hD67/?igshid=1gg54ubtr5iwz

Abbott L. Mills house. Built 1908. This stately home is a grand example of the Colonial Revival style. It boasts red brick walls with end parapets, twin chimneys, pedimented entrance pavilion with pilasters, semi-circular balustraded balcony, massive two story portico, dormer windows, bilateral symmetry, fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and decorative cornice. Abbot Lowe Mills was born in 1858 in Brooklyn, New York 🗽. He was the great grandson of David Low, a captain under George Washington during the revolutionary war. He came west in 1882 and married his wife Evelyn Scott Lewis Mills in 1891 at the old Trinity Church in downtown Portland. In 1907, he and his wife built a new wooden colonial home on their property. When the large brick Colonial Revival that we see today was completed, they demolished the smaller wooden home to make way for a garden! Mills was the president of the First National Bank of Portland, was a financier, philanthropist, and a community activist. He was an active supporter of the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905, patron of the University of Oregon, and on boards at both Whitman and Harvard. 👨🏻‍🏫 #portland #historic #historichomes #historicportlandhomes #preservation #pnw #nwportland #historicplaces #history #harvard #universityoforegon #whitman #restoration #architecture #design #colonialrevival #colonial #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #pdx #nobhill #realestate #alphabetdistrict #pacificnorthwest #rosecity #stuptown (at NW Portland Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1nOptHhr1V/?igshid=eapzfu4a5av7

The Richard Perkins house. An 1884 Queen Anne. This home has quite a remarkable story! It was originally located on the corner of NW 19th & NW Johnson and was later moved in 1905. Even back then they had the tools and know how to move large fragile structures like this one. It features a steeply pitched roof, fishscale shingles, projecting gables over bay windows, cornice with decorative bracket, two corbeled-cap chimneys, and an encircling porch. It uses have transitioned from single family home to apartments to commercial spaces! Richard Perkins was born in Bristol, England and came to America in 1851. He crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852 where he operated a butcher shop until 1864. He briefly entered the cattle business in Umatilla & Washington Counties and then returned to Portland in 1886 where he built and operated the Perkins Hotel. It is listed in the Historic Alphabet District in 2000. #portland #historic #historichomes #historicportlandhomes #preservation #pnw #nwportland #historicplaces #history #renovation #restoration #architecture #design #queenanne #stickstyle #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #conservation #pdx #nobhill #realestate #alphabetdistrict #pacificnorthwest #westcoast #pacific #rosecity #stuptown #northwestportland #cityofroses #slabtown (at NW Portland Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1m2gX8BqnH/?igshid=g0pcxww6wxa0

It looks like somebody is getting a fresh coat of paint! 🎨This Vernacular was built in 1888 by the original owner Mary H. Couch, the fourth daughter of Captain John Couch and Caroline Flanders Couch. While it may seem plain, it’s actually a wonderful representative of homes from its period. It features narrow wood sash windows, low-pitched hip roof, a small porch, slender square posts, and slightly projecting window cornices. Mary Couch never married and spent most of her adult life living in Paris where she is said to have entertained many visitors from Portland! John and Caroline are pictured in this series circa 1860. The Vogt Residence. 1907. This home, like many in the neighborhood, was built in the popular Craftsman/Colonial Revival style at the time. It’s architectural features include overhanging eaves, box-like massing, pedimented porch gable with decorative jigsaw work, Tuscan posts, and bay window. This home is associated with the Moore, Ruff, Gerlinger, and Miller families of Portland. If you are the owner and do not wish for your property to be featured let me know. The Lewis House. Built in 1902 in the Arts & Crafts style. Featuring a steep gable roof, large brackets under eaves, mock half-timbering, and molded bargeboard. This home has a special connection to Portland’s development, as it’s owner Mrs Clementine F. Lewis was the daughter of Captain Couch. 🌊Couch began his seafaring at age fourteen, came to Portland from New England, and built a trading post at Willamette Falls in 1840–three years before the provisional government was formed. Her husband and sons were also intimately associated with Portland’s prosperity at the time. Clementine was a model Christian and at one point gave $20,000 to the sufferers of the great San Francisco earthquake. This property was inventoried by the City of Portland in 1980 and 1992. *If you are the owner and do not wish for your property to be featured let me know. The Historic Dever House. 🗝 Completed in 1888 and designed with the vernacular adaptation of the Queen Anne style. Apparent in its fishscale shingles, intersecting gable roof, cutaway bay window, double front door with transom, and turned porch posts. The transom above the door includes the original home address “255” in carefully cut stained glass. The upper story of the front porch was actually once open to the elements and would have served as a balcony. It was later enclosed. According to the City’s directory (1907-1908), the homeowner Arthur H. Devers also owned a shop on Front Street that sold teas, coffee, spices, baking powder, and extracts. 👨🏻‍🍳 This property was inventoried in 1992 by the Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties Multnomah County. *If you are the owner and do not wish for your property to be featured let me know. Another ornate colonial revival: the Kearney Apartments. 😍 This was originally a single family home but was later converted into an apartment house. Built in 1905, it features elliptical arch and pediment on the porch, wide overhanging eaves, gable dormer with eave returns embellished with modillions, fluted corners pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and wide plain frieze. Nathan Wolf purchased this lot from Martin Winch in 1905 for $2250. Nathan ran a jewelry store in Portland where he was murdered in 1935. It was dubbed “the famous pawnshop murder.” 😳 This property was inventoried by the City of Portland in 1980 & 1991 with a rank of III. *If you are the home owner and do not wish for your property to be featured please let me know. The Roosevelt Apartments. There is something very imposing and beautiful about this Colonial Revival. 🏛Located in the Historic Nobhill District and built in 1908 it features: an enormous two story portico with ionic columns, balconies at the second and third stories, beveled and leaded glass side lights, turned balusters, and projecting window cornices. It has been beautifully cared for. The original owner, Martin Winch, was a prominent Portland businessman. In 1889, the owner of Swan Island sold Winch 300 shares of its stock. Winch was also active in the Unitarian Church. This property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was inventoried by the City of Portland in 1980 & 1991 with a rank of III. *If you are the home owner and do not wish for your property to be featured please let me know. This NW Quimby home was built in 1890 by John and Margaret Freeman. Designed with elements of Queen Anne Style, it includes: fishscale shingles, a corbelled chimney, cut-away bay windows, an intricate jigsaw gable ornament, chamfered porch post, and leaded stained glass. The front door with metal knocker is actually a replacement, but I still love it! John M. Freeman was born in 1843 in Massachusetts and moved to Portland at age fourteen in 1857. He worked on an orchard owned by his uncle, Mr. Flanders, who also happened to be in partnership with Captain John H. Couch. Margaret E. Freeman (formerly Smith) was born in Salem, Oregon but here parents came here across the plains by ox team route. John and Margaret married and had nine children: Myrtle (who died at a young age), Siman, Marcus, Frank, Samuel, Daisy, S. Dayre, George, and Lewis. This home was listed on the Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties in 1992. *If you are the home owner and do not wish for your property to be featured please let me know.
