Abbott L. Mills house. Built 1908. This stately home is a grand example of the Colonial Revival style. It boasts red brick walls with end parapets, twin chimneys, pedimented entrance pavilion with pilasters, semi-circular balustraded balcony, massive two story portico, dormer windows, bilateral symmetry, fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and decorative cornice. Abbot Lowe Mills was born in 1858 in Brooklyn, New York 🗽. He was the great grandson of David Low, a captain under George Washington during the revolutionary war. He came west in 1882 and married his wife Evelyn Scott Lewis Mills in 1891 at the old Trinity Church in downtown Portland. In 1907, he and his wife built a new wooden colonial home on their property. When the large brick Colonial Revival that we see today was completed, they demolished the smaller wooden home to make way for a garden! Mills was the president of the First National Bank of Portland, was a financier, philanthropist, and a community activist.
