Gonna make a zine at some point commemorating the band bnb at some point. One of my favourite things I've ever done this was the poster for the first show we put on pre me playing as the crop tops.
Made lots of new friends and got to make a really welcoming space for naarms queer punks which I'll always feel lucky to have gotten to do.

Album Review: Quantum Regression by VLF
Album Review: Quantum Regression by VLF Written By: Dan Eachus Liam Power’s solo project, VLF, has long been a fascinating exploration of post-punk, darkwave, and electronic innovation. With Quantum Regression, the Naarm (Melbourne)-based musician and media artist delivers his most cohesive and ambitious work yet, a striking blend of goth-rock, dub, and synth-driven soundscapes that cements…

Arbes "Psalms" 2016
Arbes extend their thanks to their families and friends, most notably, Jane Angell and John Pannifex for allowing their home to be a rehearsal and recording space ever since 2013. We thank Theo Lloyd-Hughes for his enduring support and advice over the past year. We also thank you for buying this EP.....~ With their debut EP ‘Swimmer‘, Melbourne trio Arbes introduced their glistening yet wistful guitar-pop – a bright release that displayed their appeasing form and directly introspective lyrical play. It drew us from the growing hue of Spring into the long nights of Summer, lowering us into blissful consideration of our own place in the haze of a bright day. ‘Psalms‘, their newly released second EP, smartly takes us from summer to the cooler climates of Autumn, casting an even more accomplished sound. ‘Psalms‘, on a foundational level, is another shimmering thirty minutes of music, a free-flowing river of phosphoresce hooks that floats on attentive structures. The early morning rise to the introduction of ‘Flutuar‘ is beautifully projected across bouncing bass lines and layering melodies, something the group make effortless in the well defined sounds they create each time. ‘Follow Towards‘, with its specifically sharp drum takes and enveloping structure change like the turn of a page, is the utter contrast – bound in a foreign place that summons a potency not heard before from the group. It evokes a warming stability between the new and the familiar, a distinct character trait of the thematics of the EP. From the immediate off, Jess Zanoni is an all-encompassing personality who entrances not only with her prominent voice, but with her intimate verses that verge much more on the side of clarity over masquerade. Found in the middle of searching for herself after something ending (that mystifying middle of old and new), Zanoni deftly finds detail in every memory – the way a touch felt, the way its missing now – and finding her answers within the music. “I’ll follow towards your love, oh take me in I feel ready now // oh take me beyond it all, only you who knows where I need to go“, Zanoni defines the feeling of being so completely involved with someone that the dependency felt on them is overwhelming and scary, but so right that it can’t be any other way. Across two EPs, especially here on ‘Psalms’, Arbes have quickly defined themselves, not only in a sense of finding their own place, but in being a truly interesting and compelling prospect within this genre. Their extroversion is irresistible and in their dynamic formation have something already accomplished. When considered singularly, ‘Psalms‘ ultimately captures a moment in time for its writer, but can be timeless for its listener......~ Tracklist Sintra 02:54 Follow Towards 05:32 Sun On My Back 03:18 No Home To Know 02:31 Fortunes 04:13 Psalms 04:52 Flutuar 02:47
Arbes "Counterways" 2024
Arbes is an alt-rock / dream pop group that understands the alchemy of texture. Based out of Melbourne/Naarm, the group is comprised of vocalist and bassist Jess Zanoni, drummer Anita Agathangelou, and guitarists Sam Pannifex and Ryan Basile. Arbes' long-awaited debut album, Counterways is out November 1st 2024 via Third Eye Stimuli Records (Aus) and Earth Libraries (USA & Europe). Arbes long-awaited debut album Counterways, exists on the cusp between ethereal and the more attention-seeking concerns of pop. The record invites listeners into an unusual sonic world of atmospheric depth. Comparisons can be drawn to New York post-punk of a more colourful bent, running from Blondie all the way through to Gang Gang Dance. The dream pop of Scotland’s Cocteau Twins has always been apparent, while the album’s gritty art rock juxtaposed by ambience brings to mind Deerhunter. Glimmering flashes of psychedelia lend from the likes of Melody’s Echo Chamber. The ten track album explores romantic dreaming and the struggle to (not) understand and to be understood. It memorialises glimmers of connection, discontentment and longing. Front woman Jess Zanoni explains; “Counterways reflects the multiplicity of emotional memory. It’s both confession, and a fear of this confession. Desire is the throughline across the record, manifesting in many conflicting selves”. Zanoni’s soulful, oracular voice is anchored by the earthbound brambles of prickly guitar and brushstroke percussion, where all is tethered to a surface of unearthly detail and resonances. Some of these details may be illusory: there is a lot of gorgeous trailing silence between notes and sounds on Counterways, and the lyrics tread softly and widely. It’s spacious. Arbes made a conscious decision to avoid any chance of a passive listening experience, striving towards creating “foreground music”, which they describe as “forward looking”. Arbes eke out every possible ounce of emotionality from their songs. Not to sedate, but to guide listeners somewhere unexpected, at the song or album's conclusion. Counterways was written and recorded over a five year period (2017-2022), between the former bedroom-studio of guitarist, Sam Pannifex’s family home in Williamstown (a suburb in the inner west of Melbourne, where Arbes all grew up), and the band’s present shared studio in Coburg North. The songs went through multiple evolutions throughout the years, as they were thoughtfully and patiently pieced together. Melbourne producer Theo Carbo was brought onboard to mix the record and his unique ideas, production techniques and magic complimented Arbes’ overall vision for the album perfectly. Counterways is a gentle warmth rubbing against the frisson of something verging punk, in the exploratory and not commodified sense. The mythical and the urban converge: dense, ghostly reverberation meets the functional whirring of a city. But most prominent is the sense of something blissfully airborne tugged gently to the earth; that is Arbes’ own region.....~ “With vocalist Jess Zanoni, the Melbourne trio channel something not a million miles away from Elizabeth Frazer’s Cocteau Twins.” — NME (USA).....~ “Their brand of dream pop is incredibly unique and beautifully crafted.”— Sputnik Music....~ Tracklisting: 1. Counterways 2. Piscean 3. It's You 4. Silver Rings 5. Half Of Understanding 6. Impasse 7. Parameters 8. Full Sight 9. Simple Feeling 10. One Metaphor

BILLIAM AND THE SPLIT BILLS
First time ever in europe!! Melbourne simple-to-the-core new wave-y synth punk, filled with mid-paced drums and cheap, soft keyboards all merged with lo-fi submarine telephone vocals. Self described as the first "autism-core" artist, Billiam is a frantic, off the walls, 21 year old from Naarm who's been yelling into mics since until his voice snaps since he was 16. Billiam has been unreasonably prolific with his brand of snotty and paranoid punk music with lots of synths, weird guitar riffs and warped sense of melody as he yells about Shadow The Hedgehog and Hall And Oates inspired nightmares. Billiam has been putting out records, both self released and on labels like Goodbye Boozy, Erste Theke Tontraeger, Warttmann Inc, Under The Gun and Legless Records since 2020 jumping back and forth between endless sounds of drum machines, blown out synthesizers and screeching vocals telling tales of Sonic The Hedgehog, Cardboard Boxes and Autism Spectrum Disorder. He records and plays everything himself out of sheer boredom and terror in a mad scientist fashion in order to keep his specific brand of “autismcore” going His most recent LP, Animation Cel, is his most fully formed yet with an endless barrage of idea after idea moving out of step with itself trying to get to the next sound quicker than the last blown out with fuzzy warmth and harsh feedback in a soup that’s aroma can be smelt two states across with an equal amount of songs about figuring out your brain and Knuckles the Echidna Billiam & The Split Bills formed on New Years Eve 2022 as a ragtag group of early 20s degenerates with the only goal of making a lot of very stupid noise as fast as they can, blowing out the sound of the records to Mach 51 speeds, blasting through song after song with only breaks for strange improv and an endless barrage of brechtian alienation. They’ve played with the likes of Snooper, The Meanies, Split System, Ghoulies, Civic, The Cavemen and Electric Chair and have gone all over Australia playing in any state that will let someone get on stage and yell about Hall And Oates. Their debut European/UK tour is brought to you by Wild Wax Shows and Budget Living and will take place from September 27th to October 31st.
