The mirror seemed to glare at you as you sat on the edge of the bed, carefully applying another layer of mascara. Your vanity table was a sea of makeup tubes, brushes, and jewelry, all scattered in a way that made it clear you’d been searching for something.

But no matter how much you tried, it never felt like enough.

“Still at it?” Paul’s voice floated in from the doorway.

Startled, you glanced up, meeting his warm hazel eyes through the reflection. He leaned casually against the frame, his sleeves rolled up and a soft smile playing on his lips.

“Just a little longer,” you muttered, focusing back on your reflection.

Paul pushed off the doorway and crossed the room, settling himself on the chair beside you. He rested his chin in his hand as he watched you swipe a rosy blush across your cheeks.

“You look perfect already, love,” he said, his voice soft but sure.

You laughed under your breath, shaking your head. “You don’t have to say that.”

“But I mean it,” he replied, his brows furrowing slightly. “What’s all this for?”

You hesitated, staring at your reflection. The dark circles under your eyes still peeked through the concealer. Your lips didn’t have the fullness you envied in magazines. And no matter how hard you worked, there was always someone prettier, someone more glamorous.

“I just want to look good for you,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.

Paul’s face softened. He reached out, gently taking your hand and pulling it away from the brush you were clutching.

“Y/N,” he began, his voice low and filled with sincerity. “I don’t love you because of some lipstick or fancy dress. I love you because of who you are—because you’re kind, clever, and you make me laugh even when I don’t want to.”

Your gaze dropped to your lap. “But sometimes it feels like that’s not enough,” you said. “Like I’m not enough.”

Paul’s heart ached at your words. He knelt down in front of you, his hands cradling yours.

“Listen to me,” he said, his eyes searching yours. “The world will always try to make you feel like you need to be more—prettier, smarter, better. But it’s rubbish. You’re already everything to me.”

Tears welled in your eyes, and you bit your lip to keep them from falling.

“You don’t have to do all this for me,” he continued, his voice softening. “I see you, Y/N. The real you. And I wouldn’t change a thing.”

You let out a shaky breath, his words settling over you like a warm blanket. Slowly, you nodded, letting him guide you to your feet.

Paul smiled, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “Now, come on. Let’s forget all this and go get something to eat. You’re perfect just the way you are.”

And for the first time in what felt like forever, you believed him—even just a little.
