Fr., 24.11.2023, 21:00 Uhr: DESTROY ALL GONDOLAS (IT) + GŪTARA KYŌ (JP) Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
Tumblr media
GŪTARA KYŌ
For our 200th release, we found the ultimate band in Kobe, Japan: GŪTARA KYŌ, which coincidentally roughly translates to “Crazy Slovenlies”. Blaring this record brought us back to the first time we heard BAD BRAINS as teenagers, which sent blood rushing into the skull, pulsing & curdling in our adolescent disbelief & delight, the kind of sensation adults try to recreate by sniffing things into their noses. There is a youthful fury & hilarity in Matsumoto-san’s Japanese hollerings, over a piercing skree from album start to finish which is at times almost painful on the eardrums. Somehow simultaneously harnessing the staggering garage punk exuberance of TEENGENERATE and the blistering hardcore urgency of LOS CRUDOS, perfect imperfection has been achieved on this immaculate 10-inch slab of filth. Previously only available as a CD on Bakudan (JP), now on Slovenly’s Mondo Mongo imprint. (Slovenly)
DESTROY ALL GONDOLAS
Insto-surf pushed to the limit of a frantic black-thrash metal aural assault, “Laguna Di Satana” is a weird garage-punk tale evoking post-apocalyptic, exotic landscapes, often trespassing the wall of sound of hardcore with sporadic bitterly ironic shouted lyrics both in english and italian. In the twisted minds of Destroy All Gondolas references goes from LINK WRAY to BLACK SABBATH to MAYHEM to JOHNNY THUNDERS.

Fr., 3.11.2023 21:00 Uhr: MITRAILLE (BE) + THE CAVE RIOT (HH) Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
MITRAILLE
The city of Antwerp, Belgium may be primarily known for it’s harbour, cathedral and diamond trade, but anyone who scratches beneath the surface can find a thriving and vibrant underground scene. Especially in the last few years the great output of hardcore and garage punk bands makes one suspect that, besides massive PFOS pollution and record breaking cocaine residuelevels, there must be something in the water. Mitraille burst unto this scene in 2018 with a sound that takes the bursting-at-the-seams energy of modern day basement hardcore and injects it into a strain of diseased garage- and post punk. Think Sleaford Mods if they released 7 inches on Total Punk, Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse if it was recorded at 4 AM in a beer-drenched living room or Uranium Club if they were Motörhead roadies with anger management issues. Mitraille have since released three EP’s before recruiting Rafael Valles Hilario (Tuff Guac, Brorlab, MOAR) behind the drums and recording their debut full-length ‘Mitraille’. The album was released May 25th on Ronny Rex and Belly Button Records and followed up by a nine day tour of Germany and Switzerland, and spots on the mainstage of the legendary Sjock Festival and the Street Stage of Rock Herk. As ever, Mitraille are ready to blast their way through as many European stages as possible. So crank that album, get one of those three idiots on the phone and get ready for a wild fucking ride.
THE CAVE RIOT
The Cave Riot, founded in 2016, from the south of Hamburg is a four-piece band that ranges somewhere between indie rock and Britpop. With their driving guitars and danceable beats they get the audience moving. Their influences can be found in 60s Garage Rock bands, 80s Wave bands or newer bands like The Black Keys. The Cave Riot write English lyrics about everyday observations and little stories from life. Through their unique blend of melodic hooks and a rocking energy, they manage to inspire their listeners and provide a good time. The 4 describe themselves as an uncomplicated band that only writes potential hits“ and are eager to tour the clubs again after the difficult last 3 years. The big goal, according to themselves, is a tour of Belgium and Japan. When asked why there, they just say: „They will love us there“.

Fr., 27.10.2023, 21:00 Uhr: THE EXBATS (US) + PAINTED AIR (HH) Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
THE EXBATS
Not to be confused with The Shaggs, or The Osmonds (Partridge Family is okay) We, The Exbats, started with a daughter (Inez) and father (Kenny) listening to lots and lots of records and writing songs. We got lucky and caught the ear of desert recording guru, Matt Rendon (The Resonars, and as of 2021, the fourth Exbat!) and we put out our first tape in 2017. In 2019 we hit the jackpot again attracting Bobby Carleson Jr. on bass. Our latest record for Goner Records is the hyper-catchy sunshine-pop inspired Now Where Were We. It’s our favorite set of songs yet. We have evolved to the point where we are basically oblivious to modern recording trends, but the lyrics do a decent job reflecting very modern concerns. We live in Bisbee, Arizona. It’s way down in the south-east corner of the state by the Mexico border. It’s a sweet little arty hippy town. Come say hi! -inez and kenny mclain. The Exbats are Inez, Kenny, Bobby and Matt. And they are all a little worried but enjoy making songs.
PAINTED AIR
Painted Air from Hamburg-St. Pauli in Germany is hailing around since 1990 and thus, just attained full age. Before getting that fuzz-tanked-organ-driven sound, Painted Air started as a typical 60s garage punk combo and in-between flirted with 60s psych and krautrock. Over the years they shared stages with some of the most legendary bands around, like Dead Moon, The Fuzztones, The Cynics, Sick Rose and The Strange Flowers. Danish frontman Martin’s prominent voice is Painted Air’s trademark. Painted Air gets its influences through the other members though: 60s specialist Tripsi on drums gives the essential beat while Fuzzomazz’ (who writes most of the songs) punkrock heart pukes raw sounds, balanced by Olli’s melodic bass themes. Painted Air was joined in 2008 by French organ goddess Organella (Curlee Wurlee!), whose saturated Vox organ finished to polish the sound of their brandnew album “Come on 69”. She was recently replaced by Czerno from the band “Rock’n’Roll Hotel”, who makes the sound even more evil! “Come on 69” was recorded analogue and under live conditions in April and June 2008, and mixed in December 2008 by Dennis Rux (Trashmonkeys) at Hörwerk Studio near Bremen, and will be released by Green Cookie Records from Greece. Members: Martin Brujah (vocals); Czerno (organ); Tripsi (drums); Olli Engel (bass); Fuzzomazz (guitar)

Fr., 22.11.2024, 21:00 Uhr: DATA UNKNOWN (US) + NIGHT PUNCH (HH) – Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
Tumblr media
DATA UNKNOWN
If you haven’t, it’s probably time to get on board—this thing is great! At times they sound like CHROME trying their hand at drum machine egg-punk, at others they sound like one of the weirder Ralph Records acts (probably SNAKEFINGER) covering, like, “Let’s Have a Party” by PSYCHOTIK TANKS. If only more acts were this eager to annoy while being this unbothered by trends! Total brain-melt in the best way. This is some pretty wild stuff, tho. Indianapolis, IN-based, lo-fi drum-machine-driven weirdo punk/new wave/noise/synth kookiness, and it all somehow works really well together. DATA UNKNOWN leans heavily on the drums (not just the “beats,” per se, but the drums…even if they’re programmed). Electronic freak-outs with shouted choruses, think CHRISTIAN LUNCH by way of TUBEWAY ARMY…or imagine early punks turning primitive classics like HUMAN LEAGUE’s “Being Boiled” into infectious, danceable punk slogs. All of the sounds feel old, but DATA UNKNOWN is the freshest thing I’ve heard in ages. (MRR reviews)
NIGHT PUNCH
What the hell happened in 2019? Five ex-members of fine Garagepunk-bands wake up in burned out underground parking garage. Where shadows give birth to more shadows something was taken shape, that's now captured by NIGHT PUNCH on tape. An intense Synth-Punk-monolith of 13 songs coming blazing fast at you, taking a short rest, only to hit even harder afterwards. Take a breath inbetween, when synth-melodies straight out of late 70ies horror movies announce the next attack. Beware! NIGHT PUNCH act uncompromising, but not blunt: razor sharp guitar riffs cut through and drive everything in front of them with the restless drums in unholy union. MicroBrute und MicroKorg-synth are not this dominant, they create a dark atmosphere and a hookline here and there – biting like acid. The vocal are another piece of the puzzle - ragged/hectic, then disgusted/resigned again – a good fit to the lyrics, that range from existentialist self-disgust to nightmarish metamorphoses a la Lynch or Cronenberg. There is even the wish to quit civilization and to live in a barrel like Diogenes.

Fr., 29.11.2024, 21:00 Uhr: QLOWSKI (GB) + KNUD VOSS (SH) – Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
Tumblr media
QLOWSKI
First, the future was denied. Then a different one was fought for. Then realist capitalism settled among us and absorbed and neutralized any hint of rebellion until it flattened reality and returned us to a path that is, in fact, a dark tunnel to nothingness. Nihil. The London band QLOWSKI wonders what future or futures can be envisaged under the current circumstances. And they do it with an impeccably well-constructed work, full of urgent, edgy, tense songs that use the tools of post-punk and new wave to create little treatises on the things that matter: the everyday vignette that glimpses a potent poetic image, frustration and weariness transmuted into dreams that invade real life, noise as a knife to tear the veil of suffocating reality, creating cracks for desire, possibility and hope to seep through. It is truly beautiful. Referentially, you can detect the early OMD melodic spirit, the cubist punk edge of SWELL MAPS, the majestic simplicity of New Zealand punk, the dark romanticism of after punk. The references are just that, references that serve to orient you in the hanging garden of QLOWSKI, a garden full of pleasures oscillating between melancholy and the golden light of twee, whatever that may mean to you. Two good songs to enter this world are “Larry’s Hair Everywhere,” with that wonderful noise freakout in the middle, and the track that closes the album, a Lynch-esque tour de force, “In a Cab to Work ft Les Miserable.” (MRR #463, December 2021)
KNUD VOSS

Fr., 15.11.2024, 21:00 Uhr: LOTHARIO (AU) + MUTUAL GHOSTING (HH) – Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
Tumblr media
LOTHARIO
Drunk Fuck / Black Hair 7″ I want to take a moment to commend Mr. Goodbye Boozy. I feel like the 7”—the best medium for punk!—is becoming an endangered format. Most labels are either abandoning them entirely, or charging, like, $12 a record to make them financially viable, which I have to imagine contributes to their waning popularity. Meanwhile, Goodbye Boozy is pumping them out like there’s still a market for stocking jukeboxes, and offering them up at fairly punk-friendly prices. And he continues to hook up with acts that are perfect for the format. Take for instance LOTARIO, a new recording project from Melbourne artist Annaliese Redlich (IMPERIAL LEATHER/Triple R’s Neon Sunset program). Here we’re getting two quick, catchy tunes, one per side, about being dumb and horny and bored. It’s part dum-dum garage punk à la BUCK BILOXI (who’s playing drums here), part An Ideal For Living-era JOY DIVISION, part something with a more industrial timbre, like late ’00s LILI Z, but also still a little melodic and gentle (particularly this B-side). It’s great! Do I need more than five minutes of it? I mean, I’d certainly take it! But let’s just appreciate this release for what it is: an easy-to-digest portion of cool punk and a lovely artifact that doubles as a great argument for the continued existence of the best format. You should buy a copy! (MRR #486, November 2023)

Fr., 18.10.2024, 21:00 Uhr: THE UNKNOWNS (AU) + THE HAERMORRHOIDS (HH) – Komet Musik Bar, Hamburg
Tumblr media
THE UNKNOWNS
Since forming in late 2014, The Unknowns (Joshua Hardy – vocals/guitar, Nathan Montgomery – bass, Tom Butler – drums, Eamon Sandwith - guitar) have brought their old- fashioned authentic rock n’ roll to numerous venues around Australia, including but not limited to: The Triffid, 170 Russell, Sol Bar, The Gov, The Zoo, The Tote, Factory Theatre and the Barwon Club. The band has also supported North American power pop trio Mean Jeans on their recent Australian tour, and Melbourne punk pioneers the Meanies. They have toured and performed alongside Ed Kuepper (The Saints), Frenzal Rhomb, The Chats, Clowns, Pist Idiots and countless more. Driven by their passion for timeless music expressing honest emotions, the band delivers an unassuming simplicity through sharing their garage rock and power pop song writing sensibilities. With dynamic live sets and their enigmatic stage presence, The Unknowns perform with a sense of freedom and passion that is indicative of not only their youthful enthusiasm for all things punk rock, but also with the ability to harbour and nurture their strong bond as friends and band mates hailing from Southeast Queensland. The Unknowns earnt the opportunity to release their first EP via independent Australian label Bargain Bin Records, releasing a 7” single in August of 2019 that included tracks from their first full length LP, ‘Nothing Will Ever Stop’. Their new album, entitled ‘East Coast Low’ is a compilation of songs written by all members of the band and was recorded at Hunting Ground Studios in Brisbane. Engineered by Cody McWaters, the group spent a week in the studio refining what will be their sophomore LP. In the opening track, lead guitarist and vocalist Joshua Hardy sings: “Ill do what I have to do, to get home back to you” - his voice full of echo and a sense of timeless desperation. Similarly, on the track ‘Thinking About You’ he laments: “Every point of latitude, makes me think of my position”. The songs have a romantic overture that is reminiscent of the first 3 Ramones albums, pouring ones heart out through the medium of well written garage punk music. The riffs are all power, full of hooks and fascinating melodic guitar interplay between Hardy and Sandwith.

Tumblr media
BILLIAM AND THE SPLIT BILLS
First time ever in europe!! Melbourne simple-to-the-core new wave-y synth punk, filled with mid-paced drums and cheap, soft keyboards all merged with lo-fi submarine telephone vocals. Self described as the first "autism-core" artist, Billiam is a frantic, off the walls, 21 year old from Naarm who's been yelling into mics since until his voice snaps since he was 16. Billiam has been unreasonably prolific with his brand of snotty and paranoid punk music with lots of synths, weird guitar riffs and warped sense of melody as he yells about Shadow The Hedgehog and Hall And Oates inspired nightmares. Billiam has been putting out records, both self released and on labels like Goodbye Boozy, Erste Theke Tontraeger, Warttmann Inc, Under The Gun and Legless Records since 2020 jumping back and forth between endless sounds of drum machines, blown out synthesizers and screeching vocals telling tales of Sonic The Hedgehog, Cardboard Boxes and Autism Spectrum Disorder. He records and plays everything himself out of sheer boredom and terror in a mad scientist fashion in order to keep his specific brand of “autismcore” going His most recent LP, Animation Cel, is his most fully formed yet with an endless barrage of idea after idea moving out of step with itself trying to get to the next sound quicker than the last blown out with fuzzy warmth and harsh feedback in a soup that’s aroma can be smelt two states across with an equal amount of songs about figuring out your brain and Knuckles the Echidna Billiam & The Split Bills formed on New Years Eve 2022 as a ragtag group of early 20s degenerates with the only goal of making a lot of very stupid noise as fast as they can, blowing out the sound of the records to Mach 51 speeds, blasting through song after song with only breaks for strange improv and an endless barrage of brechtian alienation. They’ve played with the likes of Snooper, The Meanies, Split System, Ghoulies, Civic, The Cavemen and Electric Chair and have gone all over Australia playing in any state that will let someone get on stage and yell about Hall And Oates. Their debut European/UK tour is brought to you by Wild Wax Shows and Budget Living and will take place from September 27th to October 31st.

ZOMBEACHES
Zombeaches harness the optimistic yearnings of tomorrow whilst maintaining the liberating essence of a ‘carpe diem’ attitude. Naarm post-punks Zombeaches have dropped their sophomore album, A Taste Of Oxygen. To celebrate the release, the band are taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track. “The album is a celebration of life itself, though while at times it dips into darker tones such as isolation, mortality, suicide and depression it aims to never linger in this space for too long as each song is written with a sense of hope, appreciation and celebration. There is a common expression of beauty, admiration and love of the world in which we live and for the people that live in it. The world can be seen as a dark place right now and it can be easy to let many things bring you down. The album aims to not be defined by darker times and urges to push forward and appreciate the happiness and love that surrounds.. Perhaps in essence the title itself serves as a gentle nudge in recognising the profound beauty and fragility of life.” band member James Young shares.
