Fun update: after a month spent searching for his mentor and ending up in Barovia because of it, Saverio finally 'heard' from him a couple sessions ago...only for the message to be vague, short and offer no real answers. I’ve always been fascinated by female characters that are defined specifically by what they mean to the (mostly male) characters around them in an objectifying way but I don’t mean misogynistic writing because I fully believe the narrative can be aware of the tragedy of never belonging to yourself or being allowed to have any agency in your own life. The mysterious dead girl who is the object of everyone’s curiosity or grief whose relationship with the men in her life is the focus of the investigation. Like…. The horror of having no agency within your own identity & no power to change that or take control of your own narrative.

The Eerie Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

On October 21st, 1978, a 20-year-old Australian pilot named Frederick Valentich made his last contact with air traffic control before disappearing from the earth without a trace. At the time, he was flying a light aircraft 125 miles over Bass Strait; a passage of water which separates the island state Tasmania from the Australian mainland.

Almost fifty years have since passed and there is still no certain explanation of what happened to Frederick. This case is considered one of the most eerie unsolved disappearances due to Frederick's bizarre last known moments. During his flight, he made contact with air traffic control and reported that he was being followed by an unknown aircraft, which was flying approximately 1,000 feet above him. He described the object as being shiny with green lights and long-shaped, then shortly afterwards reported that his engine was malfunctioning. His final transmission was a cryptic and chilling message: "It's not an aircraft."

Communication was lost and neither Frederick Valentich nor his small aircraft were ever found. Extra-terrestrial activity has often been discussed as the cause of his disappearance, although the Department of Transport has maintained a sceptical view when it comes to UFO theories. They instead suggested that Valentich must have become disorientated and began flying upside down, and what he actually saw was his own aircraft lights reflected in the water below.

Thinking thoughts about Abuela being back and with this backstory about her being taken in by charlatans and Eddies whole catholic guilt thing and how the two things kind of play into one another as an exploration of faith and being taken in by something.

Abuela giving all her money to the tarot card readers etc because she was searching for something - for connection (with Abuelo) - trying to recapture what she had lost, and How Eddie has spoken about trying to re-find the magic he had with Shannon - how Eddie hasn't actually fully reconciled the Shannon of it all when it comes to relationships and how his Catholic guilt connects into that.

How Marisol as a physical representation of Catholicism is part of that narrative - how Eddie is entering a place where he has to chose his path - in order to move on from Shannon he needs to fully square the hole - catholic or non catholic. And how that needs to happen first - before he can begin his queer journey!
