I’ve always been fascinated by female characters that are defined specifically by what they mean to the (mostly male) characters around them in an objectifying way but I don’t mean misogynistic writing because I fully believe the narrative can be aware of the tragedy of never belonging to yourself or being allowed to have any agency in your own life. The mysterious dead girl who is the object of everyone’s curiosity or grief whose relationship with the men in her life is the focus of the investigation. Like…. The horror of having no agency within your own identity & no power to change that or take control of your own narrative.

Elderwood Palace Lodge
Alan had been sitting at the table opposite FBI Agents Casey and Anderson. It still felt so surreal. He was back in reality, the real world. At least, he hoped he was, as his head still felt splitting in two. He could feel their piercing gazes, waiting for him to answer their burning questions about the pages and the deaths that have been happening through the years.
Alas, he had no answers. He had questions of his own: Had it been thirteen years? Where's Barry and Alice? Were they alive? Were they okay? Was this his reality?
However, when Agent Anderson offered to reach out to them, he declined it. Even if he were out, contacting them would put them in danger. Until he was sure everything was fine, he had to keep his distance. That's when the interrogation started. He explained what he could, but he could see the disbelief in both of their eyes. He knew it wouldn't work to explain, but he had to make sure they at least understood what he was saying wasn't just something made up. And with Scratch probably walking around as well with whatever edits he had implemented into the manuscript, he had to be careful.
After some time, Saga stated that she would head to Watery after obtaining the few pages he had. He tried to join her, but it shouldn't have been a surprise that Agent Casey wouldn't let him. Now, here they were, waiting for Agent Anderson to return with what he hoped was the Clicker. They needed it to stop whatever Scratch was planning. Alan was sure once he had his hands on it, they would be able to stop his doppelganger.
Through it all, his head has been pounding like whatever beating drum was inside wanted to burst out. Whatever the agent was saying wasn't helping him. He knew that with everything that had happened and how the Dark Place worked, it would have dragged even people he thought were fictional into reality.
Suddenly, the sound of glass breaking and a gunshot broke their conversation as the agent shouted at him to get into cover.
Jaakko had found her upon the shores of Cauldron Lake. Another monster. No. No this was different. Wasn't it? Something deep inside him told him different. The cult was ready to dig into her. But Ilmo stops them.
Aubrey looks to them. Streams of light. Flashes of deer masks filled her vision. Muffled voices. Distant as they dragged her from the shore. Pale as a ghost. Her lips quivered. Words were broken into parts. "A-Alan.. Where.. You.." Streaks of the sun welcomed her.
The last thing she could remember was a warm blanket wrapping around her shoulders. To the others the watched for any changes but they never came.
2013
That was the year that was printed on the newspaper. Had it been three years?.. How is that possible it felt like.. Months. Not years.. That's how The Dark Place worked. It fucked with your mind. It swallowed you whole. It took the worse parts of you and boiled it to the top.
After years. She waited for Alan. She knows he still there. Stuck with Scratch. The feels squeezed her heart tight. A pain she hasn't felt since the day she died. Aubrey wouldn't give up.. She'll never give up for him.
2023
Ten years.. It's been ten years. And nothing.. She hears the stories of the missing writer. Jaakko and Ilmo kept her in the loop of things that came out of the lake. The latest was Nightingale. She remembered him. The one that tried to chase Alan.. At the start of this. And now the FBI was in town.
A chill ran down her spine.. Her hand gripped the coffee pot. "Aubrey." Her name was distance. An echo. "Earth to Aubrey?" The second time she snaps out of it and looks to Rose with a smile. "Sorry.. I'll be right there.." It's happening again..

today is a big day for our campaign. it’s the 50th session and finally, finally, the stakes are about to go through the roof.
The party:
Alice, a half-orc sorcerer trying to disavow her powers to regain a normal life (currently possessed by an angel serving Bane)
Cicero, a halfling bard and cop who was investigating some crime the party was involved in (quit the party and was about to get Murdered but instead joined the cult trying to murder him)
Remmy Jamie ???, a shady aasimar cleric working on some side projects but genre savvy enough to know that something bad is coming
Leap, an elderly tiefling ranger who left a cult in her youth but is now avoiding her home and family in favor of high adventure with her old friend...
Gadao, an earth genasi monk seeking wisdom and identity (and “running” his startup, a detective agency)
Blue, an aarakocra bard with only 2+ years of memory, who recently learned of their former identity, Rauri Wescra, a wizard who was last involved in an odd research collaboration
and Kelly of the Bog, a human druid entering the world beyond their marsh for the first time, looking to find their inheritance. (Temp character while Alice is away)
The place:
The city of Kesseaux, nestled between the bluffs near the Dragonspine mountain range, not far from the Marsh of the Petrified. Kesseaux is a city of food, fashion, and classic architecture, featuring a somewhat corrupt police force, high-status merchant families running the government, and the Elderwood Lyceum, a campus of learning and research complete with a massive library full of vital and fascinating lore.
The problem:
Blue’s former self, Rauri Wescra, once worked with an Archdruid by the name of Twill, on a research project they no longer remember. But Twill never let her project go. Three years later, and Twill is close to achieving her goal. In an underwater lab in the heart of Kesseaux, she’s been spending an involuntary sabbatical refining the design that will transform a hapless individual into the [REDACTED], an elemental creature of lightning that is designed to destroy the indulgent trappings of this refined city--starting with Archdruid Twill’s personal enemies.
The party has discovered many of Twill’s plans for the transformation, but because the last possible moment to create this creature is in a few weeks, they’ve let things slide. They also think, because she has contacts in other cities, that the showdown is in Tanen, not Kesseaux. Twill is in the final stages of preparation, ahead of her deadline: if the party cannot take prompt, even immediate action, the [REDACTED] will be created with no chance to stop or slow Twill down.
Best of luck to my players on such an auspicious occasion. By the time this posts, we’ll be in the thick of it.
In-game start date: December 6th, the 3024th year after the Godswar.

I love doomed characters I think I fall in love the most with the characters that never stood a chance. there’s something about being impossible to save that makes me so obsessive. like I’m so sorry. there was never going to be a happy ending for you & if there was it wouldn’t be the same story & you wouldn’t be you. characters who are defined by their tragedy & yet you still want to save them so bad my beloved….

Also let it be known Guilty as Sin was on repeat as a Nick/Alice song, You Know I’m No Good was actually written retroactively about @izzysawyer & No Children is just about most families in Barren Lake

I loved dead girls in stories. girl who is a problem or a mystery to be solved or a tool to be used or a symbol to be idolized by everyone in her life before & after she dies & no once can see why she’s driven just a little crazy by it because everyone loves her after all is such a fun character archetype. girl who no one’s ever really known - not really- & who’s death is integral to the fabric of the story my beloved

just for when this story inevitably becomes super famous & popular for posterity’s sake it should be noted that No Children is the theme song for the Barren Lake story & like the Oliver & Calloway & Elderwood & Sawyer families as a theme overall & that’s why it’s #1 but Guilty as Sin made it to #2 on my wrapped because Nick/Alice is an otp of all time for me
