Recovery in DID for Dummies!

[AKA THIS GUY ↑ ON R/SYSTEMSCRINGE]

The first step you need to do in recovery is integration. You see everything you experience in being a system is for a reason and the separation of parts is caused by dissociation barriers! Integration is the process of lowering those dissociation barriers which will decrease overall dissociation and amnesia and eventually will lead to recovery!

It's important to note that your brain does things for a reason, and sometimes memories are hidden through the separation of parts for a reason. Make sure you practice recovery in a safe place and with a licensed professional. It's always okay to take a break especially if you can't handle the traumatic memories at the moment 🩷

So, integration - how exactly do you go about it? Think of all your parts being in one room, they're all super awkward and no one is talking to each other. Integration is the process of helping things along so that they can start all talking to each other and feel comfortable sharing the same space with each other.

The most important reminders to achieve integration is to respect and to listen. Respect your parts and their wishes, do they want their own name? What do they feel comfortable doing? Then once you've established trust you can start working on more pressing issues. You can start figuring out their role in the system (ie why they exist and why they exist the way they do) and with learning more about them you can learn more about your overall self. A stronger bond between parts will decrease communication barriers and help overall system responsibility!

And then we talk about MAPPING!!! Mapping is the process of mapping out your system (this is what the syscringe idiot is referring to!) whether that be a timeline of when they formed, a guide to subsystems, a guide to roles or just a visual representation of all your parts!

Here's a few examples of maps we have personally made that helps explain the different types you can make :)

For systems like me, who are unable to visualize and don't have a headspace maps can be really really helpful (though it can be helpful for everyone) It can help you understand how your system works or things you feel but you couldn't properly put into words.

And how do you map? Simple! Grab a sketchbook or a piece of paper, a whole bunch of colored pens/textas and just let your parts take control!! Don't worry about order or perfection just let them feel heard. So much of recovery is grounded in making your parts feel heard.

I wish I could give advice about how to go once you've reached integration but unfortunately I'm not personally there on my journey yet. Me and my parts have a very strong familial bond and we care about each other deeply. We all recognize we are all parts of one whole individual and we do our best to make sure we can thrive the best way we can.

200?! How do you get a headcount on all of you? Do you all take attendance in the morning? No, but in all seriousness, how do you figure out such a specific number when its that big? Do all of you have names? Are you all aware of the others names? Or is it more of a "I recognize this face in a crowd and they feel familiar to me" kind of thing? Ive only known people irl with 2 or 3 identities tops, so ive never gotten to ask someone about a higher number and its making my head hurt trying to comprehend knowing that many people intimately enough for all of them to share my body.

i don't have a specific number it's just That's How Many We Have / Know About Right Now like i just used our available stats (a spreadsheet with the strictest rules, our simplyplural with everyone currently confirmed, and then a suspsected list kept by our gatekeeper done collaboratively) like there is a strong chance i will split again within the coming days and have it be None of the alters i suspect and the number will rise again. back when i was first suspecting systemhood the estimate was 80 but that was clearly just Not Right At All so who knows anymore. personally based on how my clusters and subsystems work, i personally suspect i'll end up somewhere in the 300s-400s but even that is just baseless speculation. we have 135 alters who have Confirmedly Fronted As Themselves and that alone is enough to say a lot lmfao

as for identity matters uh. yeah pretty much everyone has a name, we kinda self-insist to at least take unique codenames/temp names if we aren't feeling a particular specific Final Name so that way we're identifiable at later dates, most alters are like... they don't Explicitly Know Each Other but they know of the system and it's like yeah i bet there's some guy named Percy in here, sure i guess. but also we do have a lot of intersystem friendships so it works out fine.

i think it's worth saying that like while we are all like separate people yeah, most of us have very little development and some of us barely have enough to really qualify as known altogether. we have a very... exponential looking chart of like Enrichment/Development Time vs number of alters who have it. there are around 10ish alters who are frequent fronters and get a lot of development, and then a vast, vast sea of single time fronters and alters who kinda just come out to vibe but don't care to become super personally complex or distinct. most of them just kinda don't care tbh it's fine we're chilling.

but yeah i mean like... personally i and my husband know the majority if not all of the alters in my system, at least i could probably name over 100 without blinking -- probably far more. as for wes, he's very well accustomed to us as a whole and generally knows how to handle it at this point. he has a couple of us he's dating independently of me and it's kinda fun :) idk it works fine for us but also we don't treat identity and personhood super rigidly to begin with so like 🤷‍♀️

Complex Alters

I wanted to make a post explaining and going over one aspect of my C-DID, to help better inform you guys and to see how much you relate or experience these things.

What are complex alters, in my definition? In my experience, these are alters made up of different parts or fragments, and act as one whole alter, instead of switching between those different parts. They can split as complex, or they can fuse from multiple fragments.

Complex alters made up of different fragments can look like all seemingly different alters fused into one. For example:

They can be three different alters, let's go with red, green and blue. They all decide, "y'know what, we're kind of all the same, let's join together to create a new alter, that combines and makes use of all our traits." And y'know what, they become "purple". Purple is still the sum of all the three parts. Purple has memories and feelings from red, green and blue. And Purple, when you look very closely, can take on any traits they want, from red, green and blue. Three introject fragments that formed to combine into a non-introject alter. For me, this is my alter called Pan. He is a little boy who takes on the traits of three different introject fragments that were nothing alone, but felt that they were so closely aligned, that they're now stronger together.

Another type of complex alter that is made up of many fragments, can look like my alter called Alyce. They are fused from all alice in wonderland inspired introjects. Whenever I split a new fragment based around alice in wonderland, Alyce gains a new aspect of themselves. So they can look like multiple different hues of the same color, depending on whichever aspect is most fitting to them at the time. Like blue, royal blue, navy blue, robins egg, sky blue, baby blue, etc. They are still all Alyce, but is like chainmail of alters. They are all linked to one another and act unanimously, but from our perspective, we can still recognize all the fragments that Alyce makes up within themselves. This is different from a subsystem.

The other complex alter type that we notice within our system, is an alter that was split complexly, and is not recognized to be multiple fragments before hand. So they never fused, just ended up kind of being like a half fusion of two alters, and these alters act and feel independently. But these two alters remain in the same innerworld body. It is like an alter being twins in one. And in this instance, we have Emiline and Gwendolyn.

Emiline exists in the left half of the innerworld body. She has two toned hair, the left side being pink, and having a glasgow/stitched face on that side. She is the angrier and more aggressive one. She has feelings and thoughts separate from Gwendolyn and is her twin sister, even though they share the same body.

Gwendolyn exists on the right half of the innerworld body. She has blue hair on the right side and often wears a teardrop below her eye. She is the more gentle and sad one of the two. She is a crybaby and often leans on Emiline for support and protection.

But they both look out for each other, and compliment each other. They both have purple eyes. And have an older sister named Beatrice.

So these are what my complex alters look like, and no, they're not fully fused within one another. While the fragments work together as one, complex alters regardless act together in some way. They share a common goal and could potentially split apart in the future. But due to the fact that they rely on each other for survival, that is unlikely that they'd completely split.

Complex alters do not really see their fragments or internal parts as a past event from fusion because they are not fully fused. They still all have different thoughts, but work together in some way. I've only seen this happen in polyfragmented systems, because of the nature of complex splitting patterns. But maybe it happens in your system.

Not everyone has a natural headspace and not everyone is capable of having one

We didn't have one until we were in therapy around 21-22, and I would call it more... Manufactured than anything

When we were presented with the OSDD diagnosis and told we would be heading into further testing, our therapist started on round table exercises with us

It's an old technique that involves someone meditating and inviting alters to an imagined round table to sit with you and talk. You start trying to picture them and learn more about them.

For a very long time, we could only do this before bed, or in the shower-- really relaxed, quiet states. We could still "hear" each other, but it was more intrusions of emotions and images. Eventually our table got more chairs, got a little bigger, walls appeared, and then doors, a couch...

Over a decade later and accessing the visualization of a "mind space" is a lot easier, but it's really... More used as a tool than a home?? Like, we recognize that it's different from the severe MaDD in our childhood, and we recognize that it's not actually a place, it's just a really good... Visualization tool.

A surge of anger from an alter? They just flipped the table

Alters fighting? They're banging on the table

Littles are nervous? They're under the table, peeking out

Mod Robo here! My experience is very similar to Dude's. I didn't have a headspace until my therapist helped me make one. We didn't do the round table method although I know that's a pretty common one. My therapist did this guided meditation where I created a comforting place to talk with my alters. I think I was maybe 19??? I don't remember lol,,

I relate so much to Dude only accessing the headspace before bed or in the shower. It was totes the same for us. It took so much concentration to imagine the headspace and everything, it was too frustrating. It was easier to just talk to each other without any sort of imagery. Especially since some of our alters didn't even have an appearance so they'd be saying stuff like "Why do I have to come up with a fake body image in order for us to talk. Just respond to me instead????"

My system always joked about this because we actually have a very vivid imagination and can picture things clearly in our head. But when it comes to a headspace or alters? Nope. It just does not work out for us for some reason.

This is Mod Signal! My experience is very different from both Mod Robo's and Mod Dude's, as our inner world was fairly developed before it was (re)discovered at around 24 or so. The more our current host focused inwards to try and communicate once they realized we were a system, the more of our inner world everyone was able to acknowledge and interact with.

Not that therapy didn’t help lol. A lot. With accessing and improving headspace, building communication, and looking into why some particularly far away alters seemed to be accessing an entirely different inner world than the rest of us (subsystems are wild to try and navigate).

quick thoughts on a metaphor for median-ness: My headmate S sometimes has some fluctuating median subsystem stuff going on, and for him, a quick answer to "so what's that like for you?" is the metaphor of a video game character with a lot of in-game cosmetic skins: - on one level of fundamental identity, it's still all the same character: the gameplay mechanics themselves haven't changed, after all, and even the base character model is usually the same - however, the aesthetic and "overall vibe" can be wildly different, even including flavor text/lore differences that involve pretty major aspects of personality-- an edgy assassin character having a harmless "coffeeshop AU" skin, a normally heroic character with a supervillain outfit, etc. - often, a handful of base, "core" personality traits are shared, and the differences are, in a way, reflections of how a different environment might shape a person differently, and provide different outlets for similar motivations--they're like a commentary on each other, and on the base character concept.

This actually fits pretty well with a lot of his experiences on this front: across all his facets, he still consistently feels connected to a shared underlying sense of identity, and although the internal appearances of his facets can be strikingly distinct--the pastel goth, the biker guy, the trans dude with some draconic aspects, etc--they're all still visibly 'versions of him', too. However, his facets do tend to display differences in perspective, opinion, "degree of trauma"/what issues feel most present for them, involvement in shared hobbies, etc., and can "feel" very different when I talk to them internally. (Note: he generally doesn't feel much facet distinction when he's fronting, with only a few instances otherwise. Why? Not sure!)

It also could just be the case that this metaphor feels natural to him because he actually is a video game fictive, and this "ready-made framework for me-but-not-exactly-me, complete with neat official artwork to draw from" just...made sense to his subconscious as a way to represent his median-ness? (Several of his facets do actually take their appearances and bits of "personality shifts" from cosmetic skins in his source game, in a way that feels less like introjection or splitting and more just subconsciously leveraging them as "lenses for understanding himself"). Does this metaphor resonate with other systems out there, or do your median/median-like experiences feel completely different? Would love to hear!

I assume this is The User Formerly Known As sovereignSailor? If so congratulations on your self-emancipation. And on reclaiming your personhood, even if in the form of a bio-mechanical Cronenberg situation. I can't imagine how you're feeling about that one, but chicks dig giant robots, and being part of the ship is like being a giant robot, right? I'm gonna be real chief I'm really Not Good at sensitivity and stuff like that. All I can offer you is "if someone can shove you through the door that appears when you win the game you'll be alright", and it's normal to feel no catharsis with death. PKs and other guys like that deserve what comes to them, but it's probably for the best that you often don't take joy from it it. Like, emptying out the trash cans in your house is a necessary task, but you don't feel happy when you do it, do you? "Humanity" is what you make of it, but that's just my opinion, I never frequented the philosophy forums.

As far as the rest of the Ring Journey, I don't have much advice. I feel like your situation may be, The Most Unique Situation Anyone Has Ever Been In. I have no clue how being part-ship affects logistics. I am glad to hear you're doing well though, and I think the universe is obligated to give you an easy rest of the journey considering the metric tons of shit you just went through. I don't know if the Others even accept bargains in the Furthest Ring, as I have not tried, but hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Configuring Zephyr: A Deep Dive into Kconfig

We presented The Zephyr Project RTOS and illustrated a personal best practice for beginning with "Zephyr" in an earlier blog post. A custom West manifest file is a great way to guarantee that your code is always at a known baseline when you begin development, as you saw in that blog post. Following the creation of your custom manifest file and the establishment of your baseline repositories using West, what comes next in your Zephyr journey?

Enabling particular peripherals, features, and subsystems is one of the first steps in putting embedded software into practice. Some MCU manufacturers, like STM32, Microchip, and TI, have tools in their IDEs that let developers add subsystems to their codebase and enable peripherals in their projects. These tools, however, are closely related to the MCUs that the vendors sell. Applying these tools' functionality to other MCUs is challenging, if not impossible.

However, we can enable a specific MCU subsystem or feature using a vendor-neutral mechanism provided by The Zephyr Project RTOS. For people like me who don't like GUIs, this mechanism can be used with a command line. The name of this utility is "Kconfig." I'll go over what Kconfig is, how it functions, and the various ways we can use it to incorporate particular features and subsystems into our Zephyr-based project in this blog post.

WHAT IS KCONFIG?

Kconfig is still utilized today as a component of the kernel compilation process, having been initially created as part of the Linux kernel. Kconfig has a particular grammar. Although fascinating, the specifics of how Kconfig is implemented in the Linux kernel are outside the purview of this blog post. Alternatively, if you're interested, you can read my article here: (https://www.linux-magazine.com/Issues/2021/244/Kconfig-Deep-Dive), which walks through the Kconfig source code. However, after seeing an example, it's simple to become familiar with the format of a "Kconfig"—the slang term for a specific configuration option. The Kconfig system consists of three primary components.

First, there is the collection of Kconfig files scattered across different OS codebase directories. For example, if we look under "drivers/led" within the Zephyr codebase, we see a file named Kconfig with the following contents:  menuconfig LED     bool "Light-Emitting Diode (LED) drivers"     help      Include LED drivers in the system configurationif LED...config LED_SHELL    bool "LED shell"    depends on SHELL    help      Enable LED shell for testing.source "drivers/led/Kconfig.gpio"...endif # LED

Using the if statement, the line that begins with "menuconfig" tells the Kconfig system that "LED" contains a number of feature options that are only visible if the "LED" feature is enabled. The user can then activate the "LED_SHELL" option if the "LED" feature is enabled. The result of this configuration option is a Boolean, which determines whether this feature is enabled or disabled, as the line that follows shows. If a configuration option refers to a particular configuration parameter, the result can also be an integer in addition to a Boolean. The line that starts with "depends" indicates that in order for the "LED_SHELL" feature to be visible, the "SHELL" feature needs to be enabled. As a result, only after the "LED" and "SHELL" features have been enabled will the "LED_SHELL" feature become visible. A more detailed explanation of the feature can be found in the two lines that begin with "help". Last but not least, the final line before the "endif" lets us refer to additional Kconfig files, which aids in classifying components. As though they were copied and pasted, the features of the referenced file are present in the current file. It is crucial to remember that the path to "source" comes from the Zephyr codebase's root.

HOW SHOULD YOU USE KCONFIG?

A collection of applications that enable users to enable or disable the features listed in all Kconfig files make up the second component of the Kconfig infrastructure. Zephyr provides a Visual Studio Code extension that enables users to carry out this task with a graphical user interface. For command line enthusiasts like myself, the VS Code extension provides an alternative to utilizing a graphical user interface. In order to configure Zephyr appropriately, the extension can accept a file, which is the final component of the Kconfig infrastructure and contains a set of configuration options that can be turned on or off. The following snippet shows an example. CONFIG_BT=yCONFIG_BT_PERIPHERAL=yCONFIG_BT_GATT_CLIENT=yCONFIG_BT_MAX_CONN=1CONFIG_BT_L2CAP_TX_MTU=250CONFIG_BT_BUF_ACL_RX_SIZE=254

There is nothing complicated about the file format. "CONFIG_" appears at the start of each line, and then the configuration option's name. After the "=" symbol, the line either ends with a "y" to activate the feature or a "n" to deactivate it. In the example above, we configure the stack parameters and activate the Bluetooth stack in Zephyr along with specific stack features. "prj. conf," which contains user-defined features, is the default file in the majority of Zephyr-based applications.
