[Little snippets of parts I have yet to write]

"Lan Er-Ge" Jiang Cheng greets as Lan Wangji dismounts his sword and steps onto the aged wooden planks of the pier.

Lan Wangji's frown deepens and his brows draw inward, his frown expressing his thoughts without needing to uncover his hands from his sleeves. He wants Jiang Cheng to call him by name.

Jiang Cheng suppresses his smirk, extending a hand out to his friend. This visit is supposed to be short, they will have to make as much use of their quickly dwindling time as possible. "Lan Zhan..."

Lan Wangji's fingers are so smooth and soft when they meet Cheng's - their fingers intertwined. They're gentle like Wangji had never suffered a hard day's work in his life, but they both know that's far from the case.

The walk through the streets and markets of Yunmeng is nice, some of the elderly that watched Jiang Cheng grow up smile knowingly at the pair. It makes embarrassment burn down his neck and across the apples of his cheeks. The lanterns begin to light as the sun sets across the water, painting the streets in a pinkish glow. A glow that only aids in fueling Cheng's unwavering awe of his partner and the beauty that is Lan Wangji.

Wangji seems to notice the attention on him, and he slowly draws his hand back. He signs something, his fingers shaking almost too much for Cheng to understand, but he understands. He always understands.

With a nod of confirmation, Lan Wangji is leaning in, hands coming up to cup Jiang Cheng's face. His thumbs rest along the younger's jaw and cheeks, fingers tucked just under Cheng's ears. The meeting of their lips is slow and sweet, timid breaths exchanged like the letters they had shared over the years - nervous but filled with unbridled, incomparable love.

Nothing else matters in the world right now. And Jiang Cheng is almost naive enough to think it never will. For now, however, he'll stay right here in this moment with the man he loves, enjoying every second.

I'm working on a mute lwj fic and it's slow going but I am thriving.

Jiang Cheng knows sign language and LWJ latches onto him instead of Wei Ying (blasphemous I know).

It's cute and soft and sweet.

The Sunshot Generation as Babies/Toddlers

(And That One Story that was always told about them when they got older).

Wei Wuxian: Surprisingly, was a very good kid. There are shockingly few juicy stories.

Lan Wangji: By contrast, he was an absolutely feral toddler who terrified EVERYONE. Lan Xichen was the only one who could settle him down. It got so bad that Wangji got to attend class with his brother, because discipline did not work.

Jiang Cheng: Very cuddly baby/toddler. Was nearly kidnapped once or twice because he was offered cuddles. Developed his temper/paranoia/general prickliness later on.

Jiang Yanli: Accidentally kidnapped Wen Chao once. She wanted to give him soup because he looked sad. He was one year old and could not properly explain he was supposed to stay in place. They were halfway to Lotus Pier when it was discovered that the Jiang delegation had accidentally taken Wen-gongzi hostage.

Lan Xichen: Much better toddler than Wangji, but for a while refused to walk anywhere on his own. Surprisingly, the adult who gave in to his (very muted) temper tantrums most often was Lan Qiren.

Nie Mingjue: At his 100-day ceremony, he cried every time Wen Ruohan got close. His father was very apologetic. His mother thought it was hysterical and had to duck into antechambers to laugh in private.

Nie Huaisang: Normally too sick to do much, but bit Jin Guangshan one time at a delegation when he didn’t listen to the also-small Nie Mingjue’s warnings that Sang-er didn’t want to be held at the moment. Once again, his father was very apologetic. Mingjue was extremely proud of his didi.

Wen Xu: Made the mistake of shoving Yanli at a discussion conference. She tried to tell him to stop, but he didn’t listen. After the third time, she gave in and shoved him back, knocking him off the pier and into the water.

Wen Chao: Went through a period of time when his favorite adult was Wen Zhuliu, and he would throw a raging temper tantrum if anyone else handled him. This included servants, other sect leaders, his father and his mother. Neither he nor Wen Zhuliu were ever able to figure out why.

Wen Qing: While she did not cry very often, she scowled so fiercely at everyone that her parents had an exorcism performed on her at one point for fear that she was being possessed by a very unfriendly spirit. Nope, she just had enough of everyone’s nonsense before her hundredth day.

Wen Ning: Very nice baby. One time accidentally ripped the head off a doll and cried for hours until Wen Qing fixed it. She explained that he was giving it surgery.

Jin Zixuan: Very quiet baby. Was routinely taken to healers to ensure he wasn’t sick. Nope, he was just boring.

Meng Yao: Could climb before he could walk. Meng Shi learned this the hard way when she turned her back and found him on top of a table, clapping his hands and babbling excitedly at her. It was the only time she well and truly freaked out.

Mianmian: Was left alone in her parents’ garden one afternoon. When they returned, it was to find that she’d somehow dug up five worms and declared herself the worm empress. Once her husband heard the story, he teased her with it for weeks.

He wants to see him smile without his eyes remaining tense. Wants to see him sprawl improperly like he always does. He wants to kiss him until the stress melts from his frame. He wants Wei Ying , not this muted facsimile of him. He understands the necessity of this, but he doesn’t like it.

Lan Wangji wants to pry every secret Wei Ying is willing to share out of his chest and hoard it away as his own. He’s greedy, greedy, greedy when it comes to this man and will keep every scrap he is given. “Wei Ying,” he says, then realizes he doesn’t actually know what he wants to say. He reaches up to pull one hand away from his antlers and laces their fingers together. “You’re beautiful, you know,” Wei Ying says. He squeezes Lan Wangji’s hand. “With any features, though I admit, the antlers are very cool.” Lan Wangji huffs out a small laugh. “I didn’t want you to look at me differently,” he admits. “Even those in my sect would…” he trails off. “Oh sweetheart,” Wei Ying croons. He cups Lan Wangji’s cheek. “I will fight every single one of them for ever making you feel like you had to hide.” Lan Wangji is going to die or qi deviate or something else drastic right here in his own home on a mostly peaceful day. Sweetheart , he thinks. “Wei Ying,” he whispers. “Wei Ying, I missed you.”

Night Mooring

The moon sets and crows caw as frost fills the atmosphere. Precisely at midnight in a dungeon in Lanling, Lan Wangji, the dreaded Yiling Patriarch, rises from the dead.

While recovering from the giant murder turtle, a feverish WWX rambles on about his theories on manipulation of resentful energy to LW. When theyre rescued by the Jiang, WC intercepts them and manages to catch LWJ, dropping him into the burial mounds a full two months earlier than he'd have dropped WWX.

After the massacre of Lots Pier, WWX does not let JC escape, and WLJ ends up asking WC to drop Yu-furens corpse in the BM as well to disgrace her (her deeply resentful corpse is near conscious and offers up he guts for LWJ to fashion a rustic guqin out of, with which he implements om f WWX theories and escapes).

LWJ is a much quieter Yiling Patriarch. He uses ghosts a lot more than corpses, having them harm and possess the enemy. His is not the story of an underdog rising due to power, but of a noble clan's dirty little secret. Isolated, mute, an wandering th jianghu until he saves the Wen remnants, he's simply waiting to die by the end.

It's not NHS that has him revived through MXY, but Su She, at JGYs behest, using one of his on sect members (it does not go the way they planned).

that moment when a thought suddenly sprouts in my head - what if wen qing was the one to save and hide lan xichen? 🫢

wen qing would make him wear some wen sect clothes and pretend to be mute and shy so no one would notice him, until she could send him back to gusu with a warning about more attacks and what her uncle is planing to do.

would he fall in love with her? someone so brave, going against what was evil to save him. a woman so petit, and so fierce, that tries to protect her family with all she has. a doctor, ahead of all her peers, so brilliant it was sad to know she would never be known for it - because of her name.

and then wen qing says yes when he asks for her hand in marriage because this is the man who almost single handled saved her family and brought them into gusu lan. she may not love him as he loves her, but she's not only impressed by his righteousness, and his powerful cultivation, but glad and finally relaxed enough she can think about her future for the first time. she can learn to love him, it's not so hard. his naivety is cute.

lan wangji would be dubious at first, and then realized this is the perfect sister-in-law he could help (even more so after she helps him win wei ying's heart); wei wuxian would be another one suspicious at first and turned into a friend after a while. nie mingjue would be VERY against it at first, and would be the last to sigh and say fine.

Set free

Warnings: heavy angst and mentions of self harm!!

There is nothing but silence. If one tried hard enough, they might have even be able to hear the candles burn, the otherwise unnoticed crackling of the tiny flames through their wicks and candlewax.

The distant sounds of the snowstorm outside occasionally fill in the suffocating silence, the muffled scream of the wind against creaking windows wailing much like a grieving mother crying for her son.

Lan Xichen lays still, in beautiful, ornate, funerary robes. He looks much like he would if he was asleep - except the steady rise and fall of his chest is absent, and the color in his skin has drained to leave a muted gray behind. His lips, usually turned in gentle, kind, polite smiles, are drawn against one another, his expression calm, if not indifferent. Of course, it has been a long time since the curl of his lips has been sincere - but even that forced ghost of a smile is gone now, never to return again.

Lan Wangji has been kneeling by his side for hours now, keeping the candles alight and the incense burning. He has only left to bring fresh flowers in when they started to wilt.

He hasn't uttered a single word, a single sound ever since he found out his brother died. It's almost as if the shock of it has taken his voice away, his pain soundlessly turned inwards. Not even when he cried did he make any noise.

Xichen used to tell him he should stop bottling up his feelings until they burst. He should allow himself to be more open, more expressive, more vulnerable.

Xichen is gone now and Lan Wangji doesn't know how to follow his advice.

They found him, motionless and cold, in his seclusion house. His body hadn't started to decompose yet, a testament to his high cultivation, so nobody could tell when he died. Or how. All that was certain was that he was gone.

There were no wounds on his body, no marks, nothing but pristine skin. There were no signs of a fight or a break-in either. Lan Qiren played him Inquiry - Lan Wangji couldn't - but there was no response.

Perhaps it's better this way. Sometimes it's better not to know.

There are many hypotheses.

Lan Wangji doesn't want to think of them.

He doesn't want to think of anything. He can't think of anything - just the fact that his brother died alone. Nobody should die alone. Nobody who is loved should die alone.

Xichen did.

He promised Lan Wangji he would end his seclusion come spring. He would return to the Cloud Recesses and take up the responsibility of sect leadership, he would rebuild his life and move on.

But spring has been late this year. It's still snowing outside, even if it shouldn't. The frost has killed the cherry blossoms outside.

It's killed Xichen too.

Lan Wangji hopes, irrationally, that this is all a dream, a nightmare. That his eyes will snap open any moment now and he will be home, and his brother will still be alive. That this is all a cruel illusion his brain has concocted the way it would when Wei Ying was dead.

But this is real. It's real because Lan Wangji can still feel the cut Bichen has left in his hand, an injury he needed to inflict on himself to ground himself into the present and realize the truth of the situation. Nobody knows he has it, he's hidden it in his sleeves, in strategic placements of his hand. He's prevented his core from healing it.

Wei Ying will freak out when he finds out, but it's not like this is the first time Wangji has resorted to self-harm when he was grieving. Xichen used to gently lecture him on that, too.

Xichen has always been a gentle man. Kind, welcoming, at times naive and unassuming, but with a heart so open that it could hold the whole world inside of it. It's this very heart that caused his demise, isn't it? This good, selfless, loving, hopeful heart. This dead heart.

Wangji found letters in his brother's house. They were unaddressed, but he could still tell who each of them was meant to reach. Few of the recipients were still alive - and he was one of them. His brother wrote to him, bared his soul on paper for him but chose to never show it to him in the end.

The elegant calligraphy spoke of pain, of loneliness and deceit, of shattered hopes, of wondering how to accept that the world he's lived in has been nothing but an illusion.

In the end, Xichen never found the answer to those questions. Or perhaps he did.

Only he knows.

But those letters weren't all a journal of sorrow. Xichen wrote to his brother about how much he loved him, how proud he was of him, how happy that he could finally share his life and his love with his soulmate, how well he did teaching the juniors.

Those letters hurt the most.

Wangji found a stack of letters addressed to their mother too. He hasn't been able to read them, and he doubts he ever will. He's handed them over to uncle, and he thinks uncle has read them himself. Wangji doesn't want to know.

There were letters addressed to uncle, too. Wangji hasn't read those either. Neither has he read the letters that were meant for Xichen's sworn brothers.

He hasn't even read the one letter that was addressed to Wei Ying. But Wei Ying has. And whatever Xichen wrote in there, Wangji doesn't think himself able to stomach - and with the way Wei Ying cried reading it, he probably never will.

Nobody knows how Xichen died.

Nobody but his brother.

None of the people that will come cry at his funeral, at his grave, will ever know what really happened. Neither the juniors that looked up to him like both an uncle and a guiding figure, nor the fellow sect leaders that will attend the funeral in respect for Zewu-Jun illustrious character, and not even the rest of their inner family, their elders, or cousins or anyone else.

And Wangji won't tell them either. He won't even tell Wei Ying.

That's his and Xichen's secret to keep.

That's his brother's last wish. Nobody has fulfilled any of his wishes while he was alive, the last thing Wangji can do is fulfill them in his death.

(Wangji knows, because he knows his brother. He knows how to read between the lines, knows where to look to find answers.

If he had been the one to die, Xichen would have known too.

They've always read one another well.)

The door opens, and startles Wangji out of his numbness. Wei Ying and Lan Qiren walk in, followed by three other elders. Wangji knows them well. He almost killed them 13 years ago.

Wangji can't be bothered to acknowledge anyone but his uncle and his husband, though, so he only nods their way once.

Wei Ying looks down, and Lan Qiren stares at nothing in particular, expressionless.

One of the elders finally breaks the silence. "Wangji. I know this is a difficult moment for you. It is for us all. But there are duties-"

Wangji sends the man a tearful, murderous glare. His lips are drawn tight, but it is easy to guess what he would have said if he opened his mouth to speak. It wouldn't be pleasant.

Another elder cuts in, defiant almost. "You must take in your brother's place as sect leader, whether you like it or not."

Wangji's hand clenches hard around Bichen. "My brother has not even been buried. How quick you are to replace him."

"The sect cannot wait around without a leader."

Wei Ying reaches to touch his husband's free hand, covers it with his own.

Lan Wangji's eyes could not be icier. "You've always been like this. Careless. Are you worried your power might diminish?"

"Wangji. Do not be insolent."

"My brother is lying dead in front of you and you've come to speak to me about politics. Tell me who the insolent one is. Tell me why I shouldn't send you out of here myself."

"You-"

Lan Wangji turns his eyes towards where his brother lays and lights up a candle that had gone out. "Let me grieve in peace. I have no interest in anything you have to say."

"If you do not accept your duty-"

"I have no problem defecting from the Lan sect. Now, leave. Or I will make you. I've done before."

Summary: Frustrated and desperate to stop hearing Wei Wuxian’s voice echo in his ears, Lan Wangji makes a mistake with the Lan silencing spell that he cannot undo. Temporarily muted, Wei Wuxian struggles to pretend that he’s fine, while Lan Wangji struggles to make it up to him. Kay's comments: This story feels like someone searched my brain for all my favourite things and then made a fic out of it and I love it. Here we have a Cloud Recesses Study Arc canon-divergence where Lan Wangji accidently uses a very strong muting spell on Wei Wuxian, which leads to him not being able to speak at all. It doesn't go well for anyone involved, but it also gives the opportunity to get to know each other better sooner. Love how the author went all-out on panicked gay teenager Lan Wangji, who just can't handle having a crush and miscommunicates so hard at every opportunity and I love how Wei Wuxian's muteness is explored and what that might mean for his relationship with his peers. Excerpt: Jin Zixuan scowled from his place behind the Jiang boys, crossing his arms and glaring at the back of Wei Wuxian's head, "You've already got everyone looking at you as it is– are you that desperate for attention, Wei Wuxian? Would you quit treating everything like a game?" Wei Wuxian tried to make another noise as he threw a nasty glare behind him. “No,” Lan Wangji finally forced the world from his lips, hot frustration and a bit of anger pushing up through his chest as he watched Wei Wuxian face ridicule and scorn for Lan Wangji’s mistake, “Not a game.” Jin Zixuan huffed, “See? Lan-er-gongzi doesn’t have time for your playing around, Wei Wuxian!” Wei Wuxian had been shaking his head back and forth, but quickly slowed to stop as he realized that it didn’t matter. For Him - Domestic bliss for Nail and Him now that everything is out in the open and Nail is secure in Him's feelings. They were so sweet with Honey. And we finally got some Dream/Chaochum scenes! I wish they were the second pairing instead of the detestable Chao. I've rarely been so annoyed by a character that I mute their scenes but here we are. Phai, great sex isn't worth the annoyance. Move on and find a new FWB.

Love For Love's Sake - I'm so glad I started this one. It's a darling little show, beautifully shot. Episodes 1 and 2 set up the game mechanics and introduced a well-rounded cast of interesting characters that I immediately fell in love with. Episodes 3 and 4 gave us the most adorable baby flirt in Yeowoon. The actor is so good: his face changes entirely when he's looking at Myungha now that he's caught feelings.

Pit Babe - Last week was all about the tears, this week was an assortment of character stuff. Alan and Jeff got together finally (the magnetic charm bracelets!) and Pete's storyline has been developed a lot further than I expected when he first appeared, but it's very good. I hope this show results in fic of both pairings because Pete's interactions with both Way and Kenta are just that good. There is so much story in both relationships to explore.

The Sign - Phaya and Tharn, being soft boyfriends in bed for 10 straight minutes is an excellent way to start off an episode.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract {finished: 5 stars} - The h/c was strong with this one. Loved it. The love story was great and I appreciated that they spent time on the final resolution, instead of making her return a quick fix. It was sad, but it was done well I think. I loved all the characters so much and will be adding it to the list of shows I'd like to rewatch.

Lan Wangji’s eyes narrow as he tries to decipher Wei Wuxian’s words. “I can understand you.” Lan Wangji pulls Wei Wuxian close to him. His hand cups Wei Wuxian’s cheek, thumb brushing across Wei Wuxian’s lower lip.

“But I cannot hear you, Wei Ying.”

Where Wei Wuxian is cursed to be mute and the Lan sect finds something a little amiss in Cloud Recesses.

Ever since they were young, Wei Wuxian has always loved Lan Wangji’s eyes. They hide no secrets from him. They tell him the truth when he asks for it.

Then, the younger Lan says, “It does not feel like Cloud Recesses.” Wei Wuxian stills. Is…did they mean that? “I know,” says the older disciple. “I hope the curse lifts soon. For now, we should try to be as much help as possible, especially if Hanguang-Jun is away.

When you have a love that knows no bounds, words are simply words. What matters is how you let that person know, regardless of your words, how important they are to you and how much they mean to you. Words should never become a hindrance.

Wei Wuxian laughs. The merry tones of it lures everyone’s eyes towards the front of the hall. Feeling as though they are imposing on an intimate moment, the disciples turn their attention back to their food. All of their hearts full. Their Wei-qianbei deserves the best, after all.

Wei Wuxian keeps his face hidden in the crook of Lan Wangji’s neck. How is he so blessed to have this person in his life? He must’ve saved a nation or perhaps even the entire universe in one of his past lives to be blessed with such a person beyond comparison. He must’ve done something right for him to be blessed with a family who continues to accept him- and tries to accept him -despite their differences.

Murder, tax fraud - take 2

I've posted a bit of this before, but I've retouched the part posted a bit since, so I'm posting what will amount to a first chapter at once here. Just finished writing this silliness literally this minute after MONTHS of nothing, so I'm very happy. Will probably post on Ao3 once I've edited it a bit.

Behold, Minshan and Wangji's modern AU sexcapade:

The Jianghu is located on a three-store building, the front a refined affair of muted colors and understated refinement. The reception area is more four generation law firm than gym. There is not a whiff of sweat in the air or grease stains anywhere. Even with coming here for a year already, Su Minshan is still shocked at… well, everything about it. These days, he makes an effort to hide his awe. He knows better than to show any appreciation for what others take for granted.

Old money does things differently. He has his own gym equipment at home – weights, mats, treadmill, an ergonomic bike when he feels like taking in some fresh air – but as with everything else, coming here is not about exercising. It’s about seeing and being seen. Networking. Casual conversation in the hallways. Someone vaguely remembering your face when you cross paths on an actual business setting, and that faint recognition landing you an advantage, however small. Things that don’t come naturally to Su Minshan, which makes every small step forwards all that more crucial.

A part of him still scoffs at such a thing as an exclusive gym. He would have thought the price would be the only real barrier, an invisible but almost insurmountable deterrent, but the elite can’t have any contact with the riff-raff, not for anything as mundane as cardio or weight training. It took bribing and favors to get an invite here. When it finally arrived, it came in a golden-trimmed scroll, a password written in perfect calligraphy. So expensive Su Minshan almost felt unworthy of touching it.

He knows he is worthy of it all. He has actually worked for all he has, earned his good fortune and success. He deserves it much more than the plethora of heirs and trophy wives here, it’s an objective fact. And yet, he always feels out of place among these people who should be his peers, their silence judgment or indifference weighting on him more than the barbell he’s lifting dutifully.

The feeling increases tenfold the day Lan Wangji walks through the door.

He turns heads as he passes, as it’s to be expected. His face is perfect, even more so than in his teen years, for not even that peerless beauty had escaped a few pimples. He’s filled out too, adolescent lankness replaced by bulging muscle. If the world was fair, Minshan would say Lan Wangji had been through at least a few lipo to attain such a completely sculpted shape. As it is, he can believe he is all natural.

Of course he doesn’t notice Su Minshan. Unlike the nightmare hall monitor, virtuoso musician, star athlete that helped parents shatter the confidence of all Chinese-American kids in school, Su Minshan had been a nobody. He studied hard, got good grades, and tried his best at extracurriculars, but nothing that could grab the attention of Lan Wangki, much less amount to something like a proper rival for him.

Still, something in him burns seeing his old one-sided nemesis walk by, long shiny hair flowing behind him like he carries his own portable, invisible wind-machine for a shampoo ad effect everywhere. It would be less humiliating if he had an actual wind-machine on him. Then Minshan’s own hair, plastered to his nape, wouldn’t be so offensive.

Before he can talk himself out of it, he positions himself next to Lan Wangji and watches, arms crossed, as he goes through a series on the bench press. Three repetitions of forty, three plates each side. No spotter.

He doesn’t wait for Lan Wangji to wipe away the sweat or put away the weights. He barely waits for Lan Wangji to vacate the bench. As soon as the man is up, Su Minshan takes his place.

He can bench six plates just fine, though usually with less repetitions. It doesn’t matter now. He copies Lan Wangji’s series, arms straining under the unfamiliar push on top of having done his own training already, and only stops when he has finished the whole thing.

There’s no helping the self-satisfied smirk on his face when he’s done. Take that, Lan Wangji! You’re not the only strong guy here!

The smirk grows when he sees that Lan Wangji has been watching him, as openly as Su Minshan had done.

With a nod, Lan Wangji goes to the next exercise – the abductor. Of course perfect Lan Wangji doesn’t skip leg day. Then, he looks at Su Minshan, making sure he’s watching, and starts his series.

It’s uncomfortable, this time, to watch Lan Wangji open and close his legs. It’s impossible to not notice the bulge in his groin, perfectly tucked in and yet so big that it cannot be hidden; the movements just draw the eye there! And of course Lan Wangji is not only bigger than Su Minshan, but bigger than most porn stars. That tracks with his life.

Still, Su Minshan watches, flustered and angry about it, until Lan Wangji is done. Then he does the same thing as before: jumps on the machine as soon as it’s vacated, repeats the exercise precisely like Lan Wangji did.

They go on like this through what must be Lan Wangji’s full routine, and then some.

At the final exercise, Su Minshan’s leg betrays him. His calf cramps, contracting painfully, and he falls on his ass instead of completing his squat.

He mutters a curse under his breath as he massages the traitorous muscle. Lan Wangji looms over him, undefeated. Nothing new about that, except for the conceited smirk on his lips. Su Minshan sees it as he looks up and almost forgets to be annoyed: barely there, it’s the most expression he’s ever seen on Lan Wangji’s face.

“Shower,” Lan Wangji commands, looking down on him, and turns around, effectively ending their impromptu competition.

Su Minshan splutters a protest, red-faced on all the wall-length mirrors in the room. He watches as Lan Wangji once again commanders all the attention from every eye as he exits, thankfully leaving Minshan to get up and drag himself around, leg still spasming, with some privacy.

A contrarian part of him wants to refuse to retrace Lan Wangji’s steps. Why should he obey him? Who is he to give Su Minshan orders? But he’s not a kid anymore. He’s not about to go home sweaty, disrupting his day even more, to give a figurative middle finger to someone not even looking his direction to see it anymore.

He gives his back a literal middle finger instead.
