Okay identified and isolated the nagging feeling, same one I had in college.
The post-film Q&A was a disappointingly shallow round of what my friend called "lesbian gender metaphysics"; the film was interpreted in a mostly superficial way, and even when people made rhetorical gestures at a more thoughtful analysis, they were just that--gestures. For example someone quoted Marx re: bourgeois wives as prostitutes held in common without once mentioning how money haunts the narrative, the implications of Violet's sex work, or how the ties of capital both "bind" and liberate the characters. That's like 101 shit. I guess--hm. It's stupid but I experience it as a betrayal when I feel alienated from a subculture that I approach as an affinity group, if that makes sense? Like we are marginalized weirdos together but then we don't have much in common either besides baseline political solidarity. And it makes me feel even more alone. Which is a silly thing to feel just because some gay people were being kind of dumb at a Leather Museum film Q&A but emotions are irrational lol. At least my friend and I got to be bitchy about it together afterward!!! Friendship is magic and there are kindred spirits everywhere even if I don't really believe there is a coherent/cohesive "community" out there for me--there are still PEOPLE!!!

It’s wild that in Slovenia joker out are apparently viewed as a boyband for teenage girls because here if I tell people about them they think I sound like a hipster music snob because it’s foreign language indie rock

i'm sick of these letterboxd types bashing animated kids movies not even because they're animated (they usually have emo anime pfps) but because they're for kids, as if a movie being for kids/families means it doesn't have value. kids and family media absolutely have value. why do you think we study dr seuss and roald dahl books? why do you think that the little prince is the second best-selling book of all time? why do you think pixar movies are so popular? why do you think bluey, sesame street, and other such shows are so popular with adults? because they all involve creativity, craftsmanship, and tell important stories that resonate with everyone of all ages. kids can laugh at the silly creatures and nonsense words in dr seuss books, but as adults, we notice how the butter battle book is a metaphor for the cold war, and how yertle the turtle is essentially a fascist.
i get being annoyed with the people who say that 'animation is cinema' (which it is) but refuse to watch anything besides mainstream American family movies, but we don't have to bash movies just because they're for kids. the wild robot, wallace and gromit, inside out 2 - these are all very high quality movies. also if you don't like Wallace and Gromit I straight up do not trust you. you can always make your own posts praising movies like look back or memoir of a snail without being rude to others for the movies they like, or acting as though kids and family media don't have value. literally WHO CARES if someone thinks a certain shot in the sonic movie looks cool, just move on with your day.
