Once, Daniel told us to enjoy the butterflies. On more occasions than we can name he was the one responsible for those butterflies fluttering free in our ribcage in a frenzy driven by unbridled happiness, pre-race nerves or a complex mix of emotions someone like Daniel could invoke. With him leaving racing behind, at least for the time being, there is certainly a chasm left in his place, a wound that's still bleeding. For many of us he was a little more than a racer, a little more than a number on a car and it's not easy dealing with change when it comes to someone you never knew personally but that someone left a significant mark on your life, one way or another. 

One thing that stood out and still does – is the way Daniel is loved. In the wake of his untimely retirement, many found themselves at a loss, dealing with all that accumulated love, now seeped with some rage and sadness, searching for an outlet to direct that love to. Coping comes in many shapes and forms; and we wanted not only to offer a helping hand to RicNation but to have a little space to honor Daniel in a way that would feel right to each of us personally. 

Hence, welcome again to the Thank you, Daniel! Fest. 

Please, feel welcome, have a seat, have a snack. Hope you're doing better! Now, let us tell you some key details of the fest.

What kind of fest is this?

Consider this fest an “all you can eat” buffet. You can write fanfic of any pairing involving Daniel (any kind of AU, canon compliant, fix-it – whatever genre you want!), you can create art, edits, moodboards, playlists, zines. You could cross-stitch, bake, or sing. Anything goes! This really is your space to get as creative as you want, in any way you like. The main thing is that Daniel is central to whatever you create.

Is there a discord I can join? 

Our friends from Honey Badger server kindly extended a welcome towards any and all participants, whether you are looking for some Daniel-centered community, someone to sprint with, or just chat with! Please note, the server is not run by the Mods of this Fest, but we can wholeheartedly recommend it as a fun and welcoming space. You must be 18+ to join this server.

tennisblr exchange/fest: follow-up poll and questions

thanks to everyone who showed enthusiasm for a potential tennisblr fic/art/fanworks event!!

about 75% of respondents who expressed interest in participating indicated that it would depend on timing and format, so here are some questions about timing and format.

important note: if you too are mainly on tumblr, you should know that there is ALSO a fic exchange happening via the tennis rpf discord!

my Vision was for a multimedia event—currently thinking fic, art, and edits/fanvids tho see below on that—so planning to move forward in some form but when/how is up in the air. open questions about format below the cut—namely, exchange vs fest. thoughts welcome in replies or via dm/ask if you prefer!

i was initially envisioning a classic secret gift exchange via the ao3 platform. (you are matched with a recipient -> you create a gift for them -> you post your gift to the anon exchange collection on ao3 -> the exchange collection goes live -> creator names are revealed.) a few cons here: everyone has to get an ao3 account, ao3 isn't the ideal platform for graphics and video. also depending on how unique your artistic style is, posting anon might be sort of besides the point. lmao.

having said that, the one major advantage ao3 has is great admin tools—particularly, mods/admins can see who has finished and posted their gift. this is important because the worst-case scenario for a gift exchange is that someone ghosts their recipient, and if it's up to each participant to post their work to their own tumblr, this becomes exponentially more likely. no matter how many check-ins there are.

so if it's an exchange ao3 is the way to go. however the other option is NOT an exchange but an open prompt fest, which could also be fun!! i'm personally fond of the exchange format (when you're creating for someone i think you're a little more motivated to think about people/ships/ideas that might not have otherwise occured to you) but maybe we don't need two??? an open fest would also allow for more people to participate on the fly, as irl allows, and potentially for people to create a wider variety of work like moodboards, playlists, etc.

eta: what i mean by open prompt fest: everyone submits prompts (as general or specific as you want, e.g. "anything focused on zhang zhizhen", "sincaraz uni au", "naomi osaka edit to number one fan") -> the mod/admin blog posts all the prompts anonymously -> you create based on whatever prompts inspire you -> you post during the posting period!

this is possibly too deep in the weeds for most people to care lol but if you have thoughts i'd be happy to hear them!

(and yes once timing format etc is decided on there will be a dedicated blog... just waiting to roll that out until further decisions are made. @oof-ouch-yikes-stripes is going to help out with admin and ideally we'll get one more person on board!!)

What is Merlin Cinema?

Just like Reel Merlin, Merlin Cinema is a fest centred around movies. Participants can take any movie on IMDB – new, old, short films, feature films, animated films, etc. – and turn them into Merlin fanworks during the fest period.

Important info for Merlin Cinema Round 2 (2024)

This year we are not conducting the usual version of the fest, instead, we'll be conducting a more relaxed and light version of the fest while still giving plenty of chance for all creators to engage and tickle their creative bones. This year, our theme is:

Genre Fest!

What is this exactly and how will it work?

This year, we are focusing on Film Genres, namely the dozen or so genres like Action, Adventure, Romance, Drama, Comedy etc... Participants will have the option to decide which Genre their fanwork belongs to in the sign-up forms. There are 11 delectable options to inspire and choose from. The form is editable for the participants so they will have the option to change their chosen genre any time. 

As for posting...

Think of it as Merlin week or any Tumblr based fest nowadays. There are 11 chosen dates in March for each genre during which the participants will post their fanworks belonging to that genre on the date specified for it. Example: for Comedy, participants must post their fanworks which has comedy as it's genre on the date which has been dedicated to comedy. The mods will provide the groundwork for it by  posting info, blurbs and moodboards hyping participants and audiences up alike.

Thanks to mods @castillon02 + @spiritofcamelot for designing a CoMpLeTeLy different framework for Fest this year! From my perspective your work behind the scenes helped support a lighthearted energy throughout the event, a gift I didn't know I needed until I experienced it. Loved how C A L M the event was 💜

While I didn't have the spoons to keep on top of what I felt like I was supposed to do in response to The Big Sleep, nor did my alter ego (Harriet the unassuming cheese-monger) make an appearance after her introduction, it didn't matter. Because you all made it fun to play along anyways! I had a GRAND time.

DEAR CREATIVE HUMANS, here's how I invested in Fest this year:

During Fest in my corner of the world Life did a lot of Life-ing: went back to work after a nearly six year sabbatical, COVID round 2, family stuff, etc. Minus the COVID it's been great, but definitely a drain on the life force energy battery. Prompts will be revealed on September 24th allowing you a bit of preparation time before the start of the fest! Note that posting will only be allowed from October 1st.

Surprise Bonus Challenges 

Not yet fluffy enough? We’ll present you with a surprise and fun bonus challenge each week, lovingly selected by your mods.

We’ll be running this fest on discord (join our server here), Livejournal and Tumblr. There will be an Ao3 collection to post to.

The fest is set up to be a laid-back, feel-good affair (much like the fluffy fanwork you’ll be producing!).

Seasons of CaPri Fest Claiming is Open!

We are delighted to announce that claiming is now open for the second annual Seasons of CaPri Fest! The theme this year is Cycles and Circles. The full rules and FAQs can be found HERE. The full prompting list can be found HERE.

To claim your prompts, fill out the claiming form. You can find the link after the rules and guidelines below; please read and familiarize yourself with them!

Rules and Guidelines

1. You must be 18 or over to claim a prompt and create for this fest. 

 2. Claiming by proxy is allowed. If you are claiming by proxy please complete the form as if you are the participant. 

 3. You may claim a prompt someone else has submitted, or create for your own prompt. 

 4. You can list up to three prompts you would like to claim in order of preference, so we can assign you second or third choices in the event your first choice is no longer available. You are under no obligation to list more than one, however. Please claim using the Prompt ID number on the prompt spreadsheet, which is the same number as the row the prompt appears.

 5. This is not a gift fest so you can do what you like with the prompt you claim! However, if you wish to gift it to the prompter, we do ask that you abide by any squicks/ special requests they may have.

Prompting (1-21 March) 

Prompting opens 1 March, midnight, GMT+8 (cross-check with your timezone [tz] here) and closes on 22 March, midnight, GMT+8 (tz cross-check)

You can send in prompts regardless of whether you intend to create for the fest

Submit as many as you like! There are two types of prompts:

1. Any poem (in English or its English translation) for participants to create a work for, of any medium their heart desires (e.g. art and/or craft of any form, fic, moodboard, song/music score, blackout poem, haiku, animation, Tumblr poll etc.)  2. Any prompt for participants to be inspired to write a poem for. It can be as vague/broad (e.g a three word prompt; a scenario; an AU idea) or as specific (e.g. Sestina, any pairing, with line ending words: tear, care, spill, close, dim, tie) as you want 😊

Claiming (opens 24 March)

Claiming will open on 24 March, midnight, GMT+8 (tz cross-check)

Multiple claims of the same prompt are allowed, for both the same and different type of medium. This is especially due to the sheer variety of possible creations. Because of this, we will not be publicly marking any prompt as claimed

Once you fill in the claiming form, and receive Google's auto-response affirming your submission, you can start on your work! The mods will only reach out to you individually if there is anything to discuss regarding your claim; otherwise, there will be no email sent from us, and you can take it that all is fine and just create ✨

an end of 2022 thank you :)

the end of this year marks my first full year of having this account & i wanted to thank everyone who made this year fun, accepting, supportive, and informative! i made a post similar to this a few months ago, but i’ve met new people since then & wanted to make an updated, 🌟formal🌟 list. to everyone who became a friend this past year and/or who helped me out in any way; whether it was educating me on all things larry history, one direction history, LGBTQIA+ history, helping me with my fics/moodboards, helped me edit my first custom theme, betaing for me, trusting me to beta your fics, supporting my fics + fests in any way, etc: i appreciate you all very much + whether we talk often or occasionally, i’m thankful for your support & to have gotten to know you all/talk to you all :)

My 2023 Fic Fest Participation

One of the best parts of this fandom is the many many fests that we have! I love seeing all the creative themes that this fandom comes up with to inspire more fics year after year! Thank you to everyone that modded fests and created spaces that inspired some amazing works this year!

Numbers of fics: 5 out of the 7 fics I posted were written for fests, and I also created a fanfic trailer for big bang!

Favorite fest/fic: @wankersday has been a staple for 5 whole years now! I've written every year and always look forward to reading the wide variety of fics that everyone comes up with. This year I wrote a short one inspired by Louis starting his world tour A Cure for First Show Nerves.

Fests you would love to do again this year (if they come back): I always love @1dtrickortreatfest every year! I've been challenging myself to write more spooky/scary ficlets for it each year.

A Cure for First Show Nerves for @wankersday E, <1k, Harry/Louis | Canon Compliant, FITFWT

I was very busy buying a house and moving during the first half of the year, so this is the first full fic I wrote and posted in 2023. I was struggling to come up with anything to write for the fest. Louis' tour started a few days before the fest and the pictures from that inspired this little oneshot just in time for me to add it to the collection!

I saw this event on tumblr, billed as a way to feed AI learning with tons of A/B/O content, and happened to be working on this fic at the time. I was happy to contribute to the anti-AI cause and added my fic to the collection.

This one is based on a tweet I saw on tumblr. I saved it to my prompt folder a while back, and when I started looking for halloween/scary prompts, it jumped out to me. Based on the comments it looks like it was much more angst than spook, but I love the way it turned out nonetheless.

Chaos for @louisrarepairfest E, 100, Louis/Bodyguard | Drabble, Implied Dom/sub

I wanted so badly to write a long smutty fic with Louis and one of his bodyguards. But writing was so difficult this year, and writing smut was near impossible. I tried so many times to start this fic, but it wasn't getting anywhere. Putting a hard 100 word limit on it challenged me to create something with the exact emotion I hoped to capture in a longer fic, and I am still floored by how well it turned out!

Baking Memories for @louisrarepairfest T, 2k, Louis/Jack Cochrane | Christmas Baking Shenanigans

I could not stop listening to The Snuts after seeing them live in Minneapolis. Always was my top song of the year. I started to go down the rabbit hole of videos they've shared on youtube. And then this happened. Writing fics where Louis is forced into the kitchen is my favorite thing.

I created a trailer and moodboard for this big bang fic! There were so many cool locations and visuals used throughout the fic, so building a trailer to hype the story and fitting it to San Fransisco by Niall was a lot of fun!

End of Year survey analysis.

Last weekend the Cafe mods and the newly expanded volunteer squad met to go over the survey responses and make some plans for the next year. Here's some of what we talked about:

Monthly formats

To accompany our quarterly theme (something we started based on 2022 survey feedback), we are going to start making more of our monthly themes format based. You can look forward to some themes like poetry, epistolary, and moodboards. Thanks for helping us brainstorm!

Changes to Saturday Cafe

Some of you expressed interest in having a little more of of a focused time thing during Saturday Cafe. We are going to try rotating a point person to run a couple prompt-based sprints over on discord during these Saturday Cafe days. We will be adding a discord role to be notified of these events when we win the battle against discord settings.

Event swapping

We are not running Riverhouse Remix this year. We will be trialling a new spring-time event.

Instead we are going to finally try a version of LDWS that is focused on creating moodboards!

The return of workshops

It's been a few years since we regularly did workshops, but people expressed interest for these again. Stay on the lookout for a survey to help us gather who is available to host. These work best when we get a big group of rotating hosts.

I love fest

007 Fest is always fun!

I really enjoyed seeing everyone come together to complete the short stuff bingo. It didn't look like we would complete it at first, but then in a few short hours suddenly there were more recs than squares!

Probably my favorite thing I made for Fest was the video of the Bond baby book.  I haven't made a video since a wedding video in the early naughts so it was fun new challenge and even though I misread the assignment, I still had a blast making it.  I also enjoyed hosting the moodboard workshop.  Writing has been a bit of a struggle this year, but also enjpyed making progress on wips.

As some of you may be aware, AI art and images have become increasing popular in the fandom. As we are already partway through this fest, we have decided not to ban the use of AI generated images but instead wanted to urge our writers not to use them for moodboards.

REFLECTION

One word: community

Everywhere I looked this year I saw community: the challenges + joys of participation; how much we learn from one another when we're in one; what it takes to be a beneficial participant; the value of structures + guidelines to keep them moving forward; appreciating stepping back to look at what's working well + what needs fine-tuning; learning how to clean up when there's conflict; holding one another accountable with compassion while navigating that conflict; the importance of honouring one who left the earth this year; and --ALWAYS!!!-- celebrating one another's joys + concerns along the way.

At the end of my second Fest I'm mulling on these questions: 

What are the qualities + experiences which draw people into Fest? Which aspects cause people to step back from it?

How do we-as-a-fandom support a more sustainable Fest in our post-lockdown lives? Could two weeks twice a year work better for more people than four weeks once a year?

How might we stretch our ability + capacity to incorporate + support newcomers into the experience + the fandom? How about support for those who have been around for a longer time + could use a boost underneath their wings?

For some people earning points is a huge motivation. For others, not so much. How do we balance + reward time spent bEiNg ToGeThEr during Fest with creating + sharing fancreations?
