Nie Huaisang is a great actor…
Well he’s better than Wei Ying at any rate.
I think when he sees Wei Ying in the in after the man eating bunker thing. It’s I think it’s the first confirmation he has that Wei Ying is back in Mo Xuanyu’s body.
Seeing him must still be something of a shock to know his reckless plan has worked. Mo Xanyu’s sacrifice as he had hoped and planned.
He covers his face to protect the real reaction he’s having, he has to pretend not to know Mo Xuanyu and to not know that Mo Xanyu is actually Wei Ying.
I really think he’s hiding a smile behind the fan. His plan that was years in the making has paid off and he can continue to the end goal for his ‘justice’.
He’s definitely having a cat that’s got the cream moment but he’s also truly intimidated by Lan Zhan and no doubt by Wei Ying too, knowing how smart the duo is.

“Canon is canon but some things are funnier” What is it like being the speaker of deep truths on this hellish website?
(Seriously though, after weeks of people taking the cooking poll too seriously, your tags were so refreshing I nearly cried, thank you)
It's a heavy burden, but I'll carry it for as long as I can xD
It's hilarious to think that Lan Zhan's dishes all look perfect and delicious, but actually taste like... Nothing.
Amazing achievement, to put so many things into a pot and somehow not include any flavour??? How did you manage to do it, shidi????
This man has never experienced a spice in his life, so he has no idea how to recreate them properly.
And on the other side of the equation - Wei Wuxian in his old body had no taste buds left after burning them out with chili oil, so Gusu Lan food was like cotton to him...
But Mo Xanyu never had that exposure, so the first time WW adds appropriate amount of chili oil to a dish he ends up almost qi deviating-_- He's aghast at his absolutely shitty spice- resistance.

Me unlocking new sad thoughts about the Yunmeng bros everyday.
There's a lot of sorrow around the Yunmeng bros promise and how they couldn't be the Yunmeng prides together as they promised. It was the one oath that Wei Wuxian could not keep.
He made that oath during a time of peace and thought they'd have that forever and that they had all the time in the world. However, when the war broke loose, Wei Wuxian made a different oath. As he and Jiang Cheng floated away from Madam Yu, she made him promise to do everything in his power to protect Jiang Cheng. The promise Wei Wuxian made to his adoptive mother ended up overriding the very important promise he'd made to Jiang Cheng.
I believe, even if it's debatable, that Wei Wuxian never truly hated Madam Yu, he greatly respected her. I've even heard rumours that he modelled the Yiling Patriarch after her, cold, distant, won't express their emotions, attacks before they get attacked, very protective of their family. When he made that promise to her, he was hell bent on dying to keep it. He proceeded to shield Jiang Cheng with his body in every possible way.
With his core that he gave up, with the dream he wanted that he sacrificed so that Jiang Cheng and the Jiang clan wouldn't get dragged down by the Yiling Patriarch's dark image (Yeah the brothers should have stood together but the decision to split was one championed by Wei Wuxian. He didn't want Jiang Cheng to loose face, so he protected him by leaving). Wei Wuxian, while fighting for the things he still believed in, while aching for the family he missed so dearly and didn't really want to leave, still fought to protect Jiang Cheng. Slowly and surely Wei Wuxian began to break down until the time of first siege, championed by Jiang Cheng. At that point, he guessed he'd caused too much trouble now. So, for the sake of the Jiang clan, and the brother he loved so much, Wei Wuxian died. Sacrificing the last bit of himself for the promise he made to a mother that never loved him.
Wei Wuxian did give all of himself for the Jiang clan. Wei Wuxian died as he should be, as a martyr that no one will remember but he doesn't care because he did it for his family and in a way he kept his promise. His center is right beside Jiang Cheng always, a defacto twin pride that will always give Jiang Cheng strength when he falters.
And then, when all of his debt (most of his debt considering the Jin Ling family incident) to the Jiang family had been paid, Mo Xanyu woke up...and went home with Lan Wangji.
Mo Xanyu, not Wei Wuxian. After all, Wei Wuxian is dead, and this is the truly sad thing about the Yunmeng bros. Wei Wuxian is dead. Everyone had a chance with Wei Wuxian but he's not coming back. Wei Wuxian ended his story and Mo Xanyu starts a new one with Lan Wangji.

It's almost like people don't realise that Demonic Cultivation not only harmed Wei Wuxian, but Jiang Cheng as well.
It directly killed his brother in law. It lead to the death of his sister. He had to watch it slowly turn his brother into someone he didn't know anymore, someone who could not be trusted (and wwx knew he can't be trusted, that he can't trust himself, hence the suicide). He watched it eat his brother alive - all without being bale to help, because wwx couldn't admit how bad it was before it got too late... And then it was too late.
Like, what sort of a brain damage does one have to experience to ignore the fact JC knows intimately how DC can fuck up a person and would react to any motion of it with distaste and violence? That he, maybe, hear me out there, could be traumatized by it?
Demonic Cultivation the Blood Bendig of the Avatar universe - you can do it, but then you're kinda not considered human anymore. It's a signifier of either psychopathy or absolute desperation, and in both cases unforgivable.
The story starts with Mo Xuanyu commiting suicide to call on someone that will straight up murder his abusive family. That's what DC is. And wwx doesn't even bat an eye at it, because welp, he knows what it's used for.
The story starts with Mo Xanyu commiting suicide to call on the Yiling Patriarch, a murderous monster who will be able to enact his revenge.
You know, because that's what wwx was, right? It wasn't at all a hateful rumour spread after the fact, based on the facts people widely misunderstood. Nope , 200% truth
Wei Wuxian was a terrible monster who ate children for breakfast, and JC was a cruel man who tortured and killed every DC user out of hatered for a man he himself absolutely and factually killed, right?-__-
I don't know why people are so fucking attached to that rumor of jc hunting down the other demonic cultivators for all those years after wwx died.
the novel to begin with teaches you not to go around believing people's rumors so easily, and secondly... why do they consider it a bad thing? do I have to remind you that demonic cultivation was GENUINELY a terrible thing? it destroyed the cultivator's soul and mind (literally destroyed wwx slowly), it was a dangerous weapon, and it was super disrespectful to the dead (which, by the way, is serious business in China).
I feel like... people defend this because it was an important part of wei wuxian's character, but they fail to see one important detail:
the fact that wwx used it with intentions of doing good things means NOTHING, much less it should be a sufficient factor to assume everyone else who tries it will be the same. especially since people who started to idolize the patriarch were following the bad rumors about him, and hello!? not one of those rumors were positive! everyone had the dumb idea that wwx was a terrible monster!
why would you come to the conclusion that the following demonic cultivators are not just bad people believing the false rumors that wwx was a heartless monster? those people wanted to be a new big scary patriarch, they didn't care about wei wuxian as a person at all.
so, in what way is it bad that there's someone preventing some idiots from going and trying to do evil shit against the clans using such a dangerous and unstable method?

Wei Ying, The Sort of Prude
I love how Wei Ying calls Lan Zhan a prude. (I don’t think Lan Zhan is a prude at all. I think when Wei Ying tries to get naked in front of him, he’s just worried he’ll become horny and unstoppably feral.)
I think Wei Ying is a prude is certain situations. (Hear me out on this.)
In the Cloud Recesses when Wei Ying gives Lan Zhan rabbits. Wei Ying gets cutely embarrassed. (I don’t remember the exact words.)
Wei Ying says something like “Lan Zhan you looked.” He shocked that Lan finds out both are boys. Which means he didn’t look himself.
Then when he’s older in Mo Xanyu’s body he steals Lil Apple the donkey. He thinks about checking wether Apple is a boy or a girl but he never does.
To be fair he might just forget to do it, but I like he head cannon that he’s an oblivious prude.
He’s not in front of Lan Zhan because he’s so horny he forgets to be embarrassed.
He can read porn because it’s on paper, but if anyone other than Lan Zhan got naked in front of him, he’d turn into an embarrassed mess.

Question.
Does everyone assume that mdzs is set in a homophobic setting because of the Mo Xanyu incident? Is this the only solid proof?
Because, I hope we've not all forgotten that Mo Xanyu was in fact trying to get with his BROTHER. (Giving me Sodom and Gomorrah mistranslation - where people assume it got torched because of the gays and not all the raping being done there.)
Let's not forget that Mo Xanyu's reputation was beyond nasty. Likely false, but there were rumours about him also flirting with animals so it's no surprise the Cultivating world shunned him and called him mad. There's not any other openly gay couple to prove otherwise, but Mo Xanyu isn't a good stand alone point to prove homophobia.

Love mattered in Mo Dao Zu Shi!
Tumblr media
Another aspect of Mo Dao Zu Shi I appreciate is that it show’s Individuals alone cannot change the world where people are profiting out of exploitation under the banner of righteousness. Wei Wuxian’s moral code was always intact and strong. But the world only saw him as an expendable tool.
They praised him for demonic cultivation when he fought the Wens. And they immediately condemned him when he protected the Wen refugees under his name. All Wei Wuxian ever wanted was to let others be and live. He participated in the war because he wanted to protect the people he loved and cared for. And then his actions in the war was used as justification to shun him.
Individuals have always been coopted or targeted by larger groups to serve their purpose. Wei Wuxian failed in first life to save the Wens, lost his siblings, his best friends and most importantly died alone trying to undo the powers of his amulet. At one point he asks what was the point of him fighting when he couldn’t save anyone.
And I think the answer to Wei Wuxian’s question is A’Yuan.
Everything he did, every action he was made to do was answered by A’Yuan. Love was there and it didn’t change anything but it mattered. A’Yuan was loved by Grandma Wen, Fourth Uncle, Wen Ning, Wen Qin and Wei Wuxian. And each of them tried to protect him.
The Wens left him in the burial grounds hoping for a miracle. Wei Wuxian held his own in the burial grounds until he destroyed his amulet and himself. And Lan Wangji despite his injuries went looking for traces of Wei Wuxian but found A’Yuan. Their actions saved him!
Love mattered, Lan Wangji’s love for Wei Wuxian made him save A’Yuan and raise him as his own and named him Shizui: To recollect and long for. World had shunned the Yiling Patriarch but Not Lan Wangji. He remembered and loved and lived, and in his memory Wei Wuxian was preserved. And because Lan Wangji insisted, the Lan Sect adopted A’Yuan as their own. Change came slow but it came because one individual’s love for another, hence I insist love mattered.
Wei Wuxian was not able to save himself or others but he was able to save one. And that mattered; when he returns in Mo Xanyu’s body and meets Lan Shizui for first time he is impressed and praises the one who raised this young man with such compassion. He is surprised to find uptight Lan Sect to be friendly.
This was the change he initiated, Lan Wangji didn’t blindly follow the rules anymore. He no longer trusted the people above him, he questioned the rules of morality. He took the best of both worlds— his and Wei Wuxian’s and raised A’Yuan. And not only that, he taught the younger generation to be kinder and open minded to the one who has been shunned or isolated by society. We see in Lan Jingyi who is honestly outspoken and doesn’t let polite code of conduct dictate his behaviour. If he sees wrong happening he will point it out.
I like to believe Lan Zhan would’ve succumbed to his injuries! He was holding on to the hope Wei Ying survived. When he went to look for Wei Ying in Burial Mounds, I think he had prepared for no return either, this was a heartbroken man! Had it not been A’Yuan hidden in the tree bark, he would’ve collapsed. The child was the only person in this entire world who (remembered) Wei Ying as Wei Ying, not Yiling Laozu not head disciple of Jiang Sect or a War Hero or the unstable man. And indirectly Wei Ying died protecting A’Yuan! Lan Wangji wouldn’t dare to die after everything the love of his life did!
Love was there, it couldn’t do much but it saved one person. And I think this knowledge is where Wei Wuxian finds his solace.

And. Hey, what if Mo Xanyu was actually an alpha?
Wei Wuxian waking up in a body that's not only not his, but a completely different gender and how is he going to deal with that? And, even worse, for an alpha Mo Xanyu was quite small and weak.
Like, thanks kid, can't even let me be a stud, eh? He was a well-built omega, but he always wanted to be taller than A-Cheng:( Sigh.
At least the dick is, well, substantial. Alphas are really lucky, eh? Wei Wuxian never felt ashamed of his past endowment - for an omega he was very decent - but this is... An upgrade. He only wishes it wasn't so eager to embarrass him at all times, tho-_- He never suspected that alphas are this easy to excite. It explains a lot about Lan Zhan's dramatic reactions to porn back in the day and the way teenage Jiang Cheng was disappearing out of sight every time he caught a glance of a boob! Finally, understanding!
But then, little by little, things start to change. His body is an alpha (and that's something to get used to, for sure) and his instincts are too, but... Slowly, it starts to feel a bit like before. His ruts turn gentle and lazy. His scent mellows out and loses the spicy alpha undertone. Drastic reactions to omegas abate (and it was a pain every time he was close to Lan Shizui) and he's able to see them like, well, people instead of things to herd and protect (and wasn't that a horrible thing to discover and a long uncomfortable discussion to have with Lan Zhan).
It's a day full of surprises when he discovers that he can get wet down there every time Lan Zhan gets very alpha with him... Huh. It's almost like his soul started to overwrite the body its in, creating something of a mix between two genders.
Ha, that's amazing! Very curious! He needs to experiment and research, he needs to write it all down! It's unprecedented! One in a million! How far can he push the change??
Who would have thought that moving a soul to a different body can change its base setup? What else can be done? What if the soul was moved along with the golden core, that would be like being immortal, wouldn't it??? Or, moving the golden core by itself ???
...wait.
Shit!
So like...
Jiang Cheng presents pretty early as an alpha.
Wei Wuxian presents as an omega.
It's a bit of pain for JC to be always a step behind his omega brother, but such is life. He can live with that. He's not opposed to omegas being cultivators like some are.
However, then he gets his core "damaged" and "restored", his world shattered, and things start to look a bit weird.
His instincts all over the place, his emotions getting out of control. His body changing in subtle ways that are nonetheless, concerning.
But he cannot tell anyone. He's the head of the sect now, he has to be strong, he has to be the leader that all need.
...he's also raising his sisters son and, while he can hire nursemaids, he cannot leave the baby out of sight, he cannot trust anyone with Jin Ling's safety! The child is the only family he has left, he has to keep it safe!
Maybe... Maybe that's the reason for the changes?
He knows that omega bodies can and will make milk the moment an unscented child is placed in their arms. He knows that they can step in for the real parents when needed. Could... Could alpha bodies do the same, if the situation is stressful enough? Is-is it his despair and pain that are making him turn into a, well, a parent to Jin Ling to replace his sister?
He's still an alpha. He still has a knot (even though his ruts are strangely mellow and disconcerting now).
Could something be done about it? His chest is very tender and whenever the baby cries, his isntincts are going haywire. But then, it would mean he'll have to tell someone about it and that cannot be done. No one can be trusted.
And it's not - not terrible, to know that he can...provide...for his nephew, is it? It's easier if he doesn't have to call for a nursemaid in the middle of the night, right? The child is so warm and soft against his chest, the sleep comes so easy to both of them together like that... It's not bad, is it?
It will probably pass when Jin Ling gets older and doesn't need milk anymore. Right?

Mo Xanyu's ritual succeeds however WWX is knocked out for a week, misses LWJ and wakes up to be told he's the new Young Master of Mo Village after the rest of the family were killed by a curse.
WWX goes with it pretending amnesia and lives in peace. He doesn't hear anything about the cultivation world, about JLs maiming by a goddess or Lan Disciples being injured. Nor does he hear about JGY being exposed, WWXs name being cleared or anything like that, completely focused on building Mo Xanyu's golden core in peace, possibly moping in depression and self reflection for the entire time.
At some point in the future JL decides to track down all his aunts and uncles and LWJ hears one of them playing his song...
