Symbols for the Chiss Ascendency and Nine Ruling Families

For thousands of years it has been an island of calm within the Chaos. It is a center of power, a model of stability, and a beacon of integrity. The Nine Ruling Families guard it from within; the Expansionary Defense Fleet guards it from without. Its neighbors are left in peace, its enemies are left in ruin. It is light and culture and glory. It is the Chiss Ascendancy.

Thranto wedding designs !!!

In a lot of western military weddings, men often wear their dress uniforms and so that’s what I decided to put them in as a base. The dress uniform is a little fancier than a normal CDF uniform, featuring a sash, more embellished belt, gold epaulets - yes I spelled it wrong on the sheet lol - to display honor chains, and other gold details such as on the boots and gloves (not shown).

Thrawn being a member of one of the Ruling Families wears a burgundy robe over his uniform - burgundy being the Mitth family color - and a long, thick, embroidered cloak/cape custom to him (I like to think he designed it in his twenties, never thinking he’d ever wear it 🥺) The two also wear a gold Mitth family belt buckle.

I wanted Eli to have some Lysatran traditions and decided to go with the exchange of grass/grain wreaths that are made of local plants from their homeworlds. Eli then exchanges his Lysatran wreath with Thrawn’s wreath made out of plants from Rentor, with a vow along the lines of “my home will always be your home”.

To signify Eli’s transition into House Mitth, Thrawn will drape Eli in his cloak/cape - I did steal this from Game of Thrones, see Sansa and Tyrion’s wedding - that is uniquely his. I decided to go with the double snake design that (I think?) comes from the ring Thrawn receives in Chaos Rising.

OCs Art

Finally got done and finished my sketches of my OC and her and Thrawns kids! I never really post my drawings but I was super proud of these! Here's some backstory on each of my characters! Let me know if y’all would be interested in more drawings or more about my OCs!

Thrayn is the one in the red cloak. He and Thrass are twins. He is the oldest of all the siblings but he is smaller than Thrass. He is slim and tall but still athletic though he hates fighting. Thrayn is more of a diplomat like his mother. Thrayn is a crazy genius but he lacks drive. He purposely chose not to go into the military despite his intelligence. He butts heads a lot with his father and they could not be more different personality-wise. Thrayn is a momma’s boy as she is who usually helps calm the waters when Thrayn and Thrawn fight. He is a sweetheart who does try to stay out of trouble but it finds him. He is closest with his Uncle Eli as Eli raised the twins in their first couple of years. Thrayn almost sees Eli more as a dad than Thrawn and doesn’t feel like he fits in with the family.

Thrass is a spitting image of Thrawn. He is the most serious out of the siblings and is constantly getting Thryan and Thaera out of trouble. Thrass is the youngest of the twins but he is a pretty big boy compared to his brother. He has broad shoulders and a stocky tall build. He isn’t as smart as Thrayn and Thaera and it frustrates him. He is close with both his parents but he does sometimes resent his mom for being human. Sometimes he is embarrassed to be only half Chiss. Is a bit of a hot head though his father works with him on it. Not as smart as his Dad but still a very skilled tactician. He worries a lot about not living up to the legend that is his father.

Thaera is the wild child and the youngest. She is a spitting image of her mother just in Chiss form. Huge daddy’s girl as Thrawn always wanted a mini version of Maya. Thaera is a mini version of her mother’s personality too which means she and her mother buttheads a lot. Maya doesn’t like how much Thrawn lets Thaera get away with stuff. Thaera loves making art which is another reason she and her dad are close. Thaera doesn’t want to go into the military or politics cause she sees the evil in both. If she can she wants to be an artist. Both her parents are supportive of her dreams. She is sassy and loves pranking her brothers much to their dismay. She also has her big brothers wrapped around her finger. She is good at manipulating people to get what she wants.

Maya: She and Thrawn met when Eli and Thrawn were at the Imperial Academy. Maya was staying with her Uncle Yularen who had taken her in after he met her during an ISB mission. He offered her a new life if she promised to help him during the mission. Maya was a street rat on her home planet and had a dark past. She is politically smart as she had to survive the streets and she learned a lot about politics while living in the upper class of Coruscant. She met Thrawn and Eli when she surprisingly beat their team during a capture-the-flag simulation. Maya had found a way around the rules and Thrawn was not very happy about it. Kinda of a rivals-to-lovers trope. Maya was a jokester and pranker and Thrawn at first hated how unserious she was though that became the thing he loved most about her. Maya and Eli became friends very fast once all of them were on the same team for a simulation. Maya became the political ally Thrawn needed as many in the upper society liked her. Maya was a combat officer until an accident happened and she had to medically retire. She and Thrawn eventually got married in secret and Eli officiated the ceremony. Maya found out she was pregnant right around the time Eli was sent to the Ascendancy and she was sent with him much to her dismay. Thrawn was worried about what the Emperor would do if he found out about Maya and their future kid(s). When Maya joined the ascendancy she tried to join house Mitth as technically it was her right to do so by marriage. She met Thurfian who didn’t like her at first 1. Cause she was human and 2. She was Thrawns wife. He was impressed however by her political skills and offered her a deal. She and her kids would be a part of the Mitth household if she were to live at the Mitth household and be his political advisor. She rises quickly and becomes Thurfian’s closest advisor (he still hates Thrawn tho lol). Maya would give birth to the twin boys with the help of Eli who supported her through the entire birth. Eli helped Maya raise the boys which is why Thrayn is a mini Eli honestly. The boys came out looking full Chiss which made Thurfian happy. Thrawn wouldn’t see the boys until 4 years after they were born. It caused some problems with him and Maya that he was gone for so long but they made up and that’s how Thaera was born.

some headcanon rules: colors are not totally bound to families, but are used more than others. shapes and flow play a big part in the design. basically go crazy and have fun with your own designs :D

Do you think that in ascendancy there is a big gap between class the rich-poor type of gap. Most people probably didn't get the opportunity to simply be born in on the ruling family's, and even getting "adopted" was something for the most gifted, and it wasn't always permanent...

Definitely

Thrawn and Borika come from a rather small family, they had no name to back them up and were most probably on the poorer side of the spectrum.

We have the farmer's family, while not necessarily poor (we don't really know) the mother and daughter were impressed by the jewelry offered by the Agbuis without even knowing they were made of Nyix (plus the general disdain of Lakjiip towards their farmer occupation).

And then we have the ruling families' estates with lavish dining rooms, rooms to expose art numerous pieces, the Mitth Family estates have an entire interactive map on their floor, a river, a (false? or small) mountain.

There was also a dispute between two families of the 40 (if I recall correctly) considering land problems that Thurfian judged.

Clearly, some families live comfortably and have the money to manage Lands and Estates and others just live simply with more humble means.

There are probably more examples but that's what comes to my mind right this instant!

Is there a gap between rich and poor in the Ascendancy? Most definitely.

But we know little of the social and economic politics, maybe they are helps in place for the more humble families!

Or maybe not.

Thrawn origin story headcanon

Thrawn is the youngest of three - Kivu'rai'neito, Kivu'rik'ardok, and Kivu'raw'nuru. Before Thawns was born, Vuraine became a merit adoptive to one of the Great Houses at nine and a blackdock engineer later in life. Vurika was taken by the CEDF to become a Sky-walker and had her memory wiped at five. Thrawn's parents tried desperately to hold onto him but they were a Common family. Thrawn's mother, who had already lost three children, became profoundly depressed and died postpartum after the stillbirth of a fourth child following Vurawn being taken by the Mitth. She was buried with honors. Thrawn's father did not remarry, nor did he father more children, and died in a berg rollover at the age of fifty-one.

It is illegal for a merit adoptive to contact their family of origin, but instead of the penalty falling on the adoptive, it falls on the family. Thrawn never tried to get in touch with his Kivu relatives or his parents to spare them the loss of employment, benefits, and even a possible prison term. Likewise a family contacting a merit adoptive would see their child severely punished for the family's attempt.

Thrawn's mother was the granddaughter of a former Sky-walker, born to a Lesser family and had been inducted into the program herself. There are Sky-walkers who wash out of the program, or who can't be retrained after a disaster in space. After one such disaster, Riv'kaein was adopted by a Great family at the age of eight. She married Kivu'sha'neza after obtaining a degree in pelagic aquaculture. She never spoke of her past, or her prosthetic legs, to any of her children.

Kivu'sha'neza was the Rentor equivalent of the Coast Guard, holding the rank of Warrant Officer, leading a squad of boarding troops. Rentor was home to deep-sea vents that spewed valuable gases (in liquid form because of the pressure). Pirates were ever-present and often from rival houses.

The Kivu, one of the most populous Common families, had a deep resentment to the casual gathering of their children, sometimes all of the children of a couple would be taken by higher-ranked families. Only Greater and Ruling houses can induct Merit Adoptives and though many are adopted in adulthood, the exceptional children of Common and Lesser families are taken as young as eight. Someone shows up at school, the child is called to the office, and never sees home or family again. Some of the Great and Ruling families openly refer to this as 'harvesting.' This trauma is one of the reasons for the punitive measures to stop contact between adoptives and families of origin.

Thrawn does not remember his oldest sister, but as long as he could remember, Vurika was his playmate and also his interpreter. She did all the talking for him. The team sent to take Vurika took her in full view of her brother while they played at the pre-school/day care. One of the sergeants still has a chunk of missing flesh from Vurawn's new meat teeth. Thrawn remembers it as clear as day.

Thrawn was offered a slot at CEDF boarding prep following standard testing at age nine. It was on Rentor, so he did get to see his parents. His mother was supposed to give birth about the same time the Mitth adopted him and he was sent to Taharim to finish his education.

His parents applied for emigration to one of the planets on the edge of the Ascendancy, thinking to make a run for it to Lesser Space. They were denied, despite being law-abiding subjects. When Thrawn became an adoptive the Mitth recognized that all three children were taken from this pair, and offered to allow them to emigrate or be adopted into a Great family after Vurivkae gave birth to her fourth child. They would not, however, promise not to take the child if it showed any talent.

There is no legal roadblock preventing a 'harvested' children from contacting each other as adults - if they can find each other. Often there is only the middle personal name to go on, as the beginning of the core name may change the way Vurika/Rik'ardok/Zirika/Borika did. Thrawn's eldest sister did look for her siblings when she was an adult, but did not find either him or Vurika.

Eli searched out Vuraine after he saw a young man who looked like Thrawn when the Steadfast visited the UAG base. Vuraine was now Stybla'rai'neito or Laraine, and her son was Stybla'raw'neza - called Arawne.

Decided to make symbols to all Chiss Families mentioned in the books. As of Ruling Families, I just put names to the symbols using my personal preference.

Thrantovember 2023 - Day 1 - Neither Ever, Nor Never

As in past years, I'll be posting these every day on tumblr and adding them to AO3 HERE every few days.

This first one is post-Thrawn series with Thrawn back in the Ascendancy, in a world where Thrass lives.

Thrawn has always been glad — truly glad, in a warm and contented way — that his husband and brother get along so well. He’d thought they would, all those years ago.

He’d hoped they would.

Of course, in retrospect, he may have unleashed a menace upon the Ascendancy.

Eli’s glass thunks down on the table of the small diner, a look of concentration on his face as his throat bobs. When Thrawn kisses him later tonight, he will be able to taste the lingering traces of the alcohol on Eli’s tongue.

“My turn,” Eli says, eyes narrowing at Thrass across the table in a way that is very, very focused. Thrawn knows he’s weighing every possibility, looking to take the advantage back from Thrass in some unexpected way. Finally, after a moment of thought, he sits back with a glint of triumph in those eyes, shoulder bumping against Thrawn’s beside him. “Never have I ever become Patriarch of the Mitth family!”

Thrass looks at him in confusion. “Neither have I, little brother,” he says slowly. “Have I misunderstood the rules of the game?”

Eli shrugs, the faint lines by his eyes creasing with mischief. “That’s okay. I’ll collect when you do.”

Canon Character Design: Thurfian

Mitth'urf'ianico first appeared in Chaos Rising, the first of the Thrawn: Ascendancy novels, as a Syndic of the Mitth Family with aspirations towards becoming the Family's Speaker, the head of the Family's delegation to the Chiss Syndicure, its supreme ruling body. By the end of the trilogy, he has attained the role of Mitth Patriarch, the highest-ranking member of the Family. Though late in his years, in Recrimination Thurfian continues to act with cunning and strength of will in order to safeguard the Mitth against any threat or instability, whatever the cost.

Patriarchs of the Nine Ruling Families (And Three Former Ruling Families)

Gonna talk about the Chiss Patriarchs of the Nine Ruling Families and Three Former Ruling Families. Some of these aren't OCs but the designs and personalities I'm giving are all non-canon soooo...

DISCLAIMER: Some personalities are off canon, kay? I'm very aware that they are, this is my take on them.

Nine Ruling Families:

First of: Patriarch Saarke of the Ufsa Family

He is usually the calm and collected one. And he's a traditionalist. He dislikes many things out of tradition. He doesn't have the strongest opinions on his rivalling families, but he treats the other Patriarchs with respect enough.

Next is Patriarch Zififirenc of the Irizi Family

He is the serious patriarch who cares only if protocol is being done correctly and smoothly with proper authorization. He can be quite a traditionalist himself but not as much. He doesn't fool around, hates lollygagging honestly

Next is Patriarch Kloirvursi of the Dasklo Family

He is light-hearted and usually open to new traditions but sticking close to old ones firmly. He is one of the wisest among the Patriarchs and is willing to give advice to them whenever necessary, or if it is in terms of either adding a new tradition. He dislikes breaking an old tradition, however.

Next is Patriarch Rivlex of the Clarr Family

He is an intelligent one, usually the one whose skills are tested in terms of solving the economic crisis of the Ascendancy. Though his skills are great, some still doubt his intelligence, but he shrugs off those doubts and murmurs about him and just decides to help if he wants to.

Next is Patriarch Furfursi or the Chaf Family

He is very vain and mostly cares about his fit in an event or so. He usually organizes the Ascending balls and is always seen to make sure everyone will look gorgeous enough to appear but never out stage him. He always had the tendency to steal the spotlight in any gathering and will immediately be an enemy of anyone who steals his spotlight.

Next is Patriarch Khtrinek of the Plikh Family

He isn't that much into tradition as the others are, though he is still accustomed to specific traditions. He speaks empty from time to time, barely showing emotion while he speaks and is most of the time lurking around planets when he has no duties to fulfil.

Next is Patriarch Ilarga of the Boadil Family

He strictly cares for property damage and worth than traditions. He makes sure that all of the allies of his family have the finest of the finest, and he hates anyone who even attempts to damage any of the properties he sends to his people and his allies. He has a strong dislike for his rival families, however, but says nothing about it usually.

Next is Patriarch Thooraki of the Mitth Family

He is usually a non-traditionalist, though he still respects tradition as much as a he could. He is a little Rebel from the strict traditions that he longed and usually breaks out from. He almost never raises his voice, but when he does, it sends shivers down the spines of his enemies and rivals enough to clamp their mouths shut.

Next is Patriarch Iceesat of the Obbic Family

He is a non-traditionalist to the core and the youngest among the Patriarchs. He constantly breaks his boundaries as a Patriarch and is seen prioritizing to style his hair more than care about his clothes or appearances. He is especially open to alien interactions, much more open and energetic and outgoing than the other Patriarchs

Former In The Ruling Families

This is Patriarch Yokado of the Coduyo Family

He is a traditionalist of his own family and usually keeps to himself. His words are soft and quiet, even as he argued. He is the only Patriarch to never lose his temper (yet) and is by far the only one approachable if the other Patriarchs throw a hissy fit in front of children.

Next is Patriarch Lamiov of the Stybla Family

He is a straight forward one who is always open to new traditions and suggestions. He tends to break some traditions and can be seen usually out of his Mansion rather than staying indoors. He immerses himself with nature at the most, allowing things to happen as they should and only giving little to no comment unless necessary.

Lastly, we have Patriarch Lakencill of the Xodlak Family

He is a bitter, self-centred Chiss who often challenges the opinions of the other Patriarchs. He is the oldest among them, but he doesn't use his knowledge to provide any sorts of wisdom. Instead, he wails and scowls, always claiming that the Xodlak Family should have stayed in the ranks of the Nine Ruling Families.
