Today (May 5th) is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness day.
Native American folks continue to have very high rates of homicide and violence against them. Murder is the 3rd-leading cause of death for Native girls and women. More than 4 in 5 Native American people have experienced violence in their lifetimes, more than 90% of these from non-Native perpetrators. Most of these have not seen justice.
I want to uplift some events near me, and I would encourage fellow non-Native folks to look into the Native American communities in your area to find education, events, and fundraisers.
On May 6th, the MMIP Central Oklahoma Chapter is hosting a memorial walk and relevant speakers at the state capitol.
On May 10th, the CPN House of Hope is hosting a remembrance walk in Shawnee, OK.
On May 11th, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is hosting a community 5k/1 mile run in Antlers, OK with Choctaw vendor booths.
Here is a list of some other events for MMIP across the nation.

Please pray and raise awareness for Cole Brings Plenty, a Lakota actor and student. He was found on april 5th. This is such an awful and cruel act of violence, im having a hard time finding the words.
April 8th Rising Hearts has organized Braids for Cole, so please wear your hair in braids and bring awareness so that Cole and his family can get justice.

There's a podcast titled Heart Starts Pounding that I was listening to recently. In ep 43, the host and her guest were covering about the disappearance of Chris Jenkins on Halloween in 2002. And upon mentioning that Jenkins wore a Native American costume that night:
Tumblr media
I mean, "off color" is a pretty vague way to describe the racist act of treating Native Americans as costumes. And yeah, people aren't going to care becos (White) Americans don't tend to care about Native Americans, then and now.
And there was ep 76, where the host covered the disappearance of the Jack family, who were of First Nation descent. From the way the host were describing the police, you'd think the police were more helpful than they actually were. More info on the Jack family disappearance here:
youtube
I do listen to a bunch of podcasts that cover the paranormal, creepy phenomenon, ghost stories, occasional true crime, and their creators are predominantly White women. And it makes for some very frustrating listening becos they aren't particularly critical of cops. This gets esp evident when they sometimes cover cases where the victims are Black or Indigenous. And in the occasions where the case centers on a Black or Indigenous victim, the victims don't seem to be treated respectfully or as human? And then there are the moments where these White pple don't do their research on non-white cultures and just spout the popular racist misinformation, like on topics regarding voodoo or sk*nw*lk*rs etc. And they tend to be downright dismissive of racist behaviours, often playing it down or going "oh it was a different time..."

Do you not cry every day thinking about the people we’ve lost?
Mourning the people who aren’t here, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t be. They should be here with us.
People murdered by the thousands for no fucking reason.
Do you grieve people you’ve never met?
Because I do.
Every goddamn day.

i feel like all i ever do is complain about my job like there are some parts i really love about teaching but then some days i want to run and nosedive out the window
#anyways i’m going to complain in the tags so it’s easy to ignore#like#ugh!!!!#my district does not mandate any special curriculum like as long as you’re teaching to the standards it’s fine#my school paid for a textbook that is bad. it’s been bad. I have been complaining about the textbook for 6 years now and no one listens cuz#they don’t care about history and also my admin don’t know how to teach so they think a book with scripted lines and imbedded tests are good#cuz they think it’s less work and it kinda is but the book is BAD not up to date doesn’t give nuance#there’s a chapter on how thanksgiving was a good day and it was how the pilgrims said thanks and has nothing about the murder or#brutalization of the indigenous people. there’s like a chapter on slavery that’s like ‘Africans came on boats to help work the fields 😁’#and so i follow the timeline of the textbook i take excerpts from it and then I supplement the rest make it into a power point#give the students think questions for each section it’s rigorous but not too hard cuz most of my kids are below 8th reading comprehension#levels and ny admin come in and and are like why aren’t you using the book I’ve told you why I don’t but here is what I’m doing#well the kids aren’t discussing. today isn’t a discussion day today is a lecture day wed is discussion day after I give the facts#well they need to discuss everyday. well they don’t cuz they can’t discuss what they haven’t read yet. if they don’t know about the war how#can they discuss the war? like it’s a multi step process#but they want today im not doing my job cuz im not doing it how they went to one seminar and that presenter said is a new way to tech#never mind I have students that come back to me from high school like wow I miss your class I learned so much etc etc#like my kids learn everyday. the work is engaging every single day#LEAVE ME ALONE AND LET ME TEACH!! ive been doing this for almost 10 years i fucking got this#raaaaaaahhhh aaaahhhh gaaaaah kill stab bite murder murder violence!!!

The House of Commons adopted a motion on unanimous consent Tuesday calling on the federal government to declare ongoing violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people a national emergency.
The motion was presented by Winnipeg Centre NDP MP Leah Gazan. It also calls on the government to provide an "immediate and substantial investment" to create a public alert system for missing Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.
"I'm very pleased today that all members of Parliament are acknowledging the truth about the history in this country, as a way to move forward," she said.
Gazan is now calling on the government to issue an official emergency proclamation.
"It's one thing to acknowledge the truth. It's another thing to act on it," she said.

Today is Red dress day. Remember and Honour all of the Native Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two spirits that have gone missing and have been murdered. Most of these cases are never heard in the public and they are sadly forgotten. Today I want to spread awareness for all Indigenous people, I want to share my culture and help others understand the importance of sharing stories from these victims.
I will be donating as well on this day to several sites that support native women and girls. And also a few sites that want to protect ICWA. I suggest you do the same but if you are not financially able to then spread awareness respectfully.🧡🧡
(I’m doing Donation commission 50% of the profits go to NICWA! this post-> https://www.tumblr.com/walterdoodles/719214714265255936/im-opening-up-some-donation-commissions-if-you )

In Britain, November is an early start for Christmas.
In America, November is Thanksgiving month which is the month of mourning for the indigenous people of America.
Is Thanksgiving a time for family, food, Maceys Parade and football?
Of course!
But, it has an ugly side nobody talks about. About how Thanksgiving is about the white Pilgrims fleeing Britain and stealing the land of the indigenous Americans and forcing them to convert to their God!
So, just remember that November is the month of mourning for the indigenous people of America.

I’m wearing braids today for Cole Brings Plenty and the Brings Plenty family, who have suffered a terrible loss. Cole Brings Plenty was murdered and his braids cut off. Today we wear braids to show solidarity with the Brings Plenty family and the indigenous peoples of the world - who have faced far too much violence and oppression. We see you, we stand with you.
Rest in power, Cole.

I'm tired of seeing antisemitism on my dash, in all its subtle forms. War is an atrocity, and Israel is not unique in that. Where is the outrage against Russia's ongoing genocide of Ukrainians? What about China's genocide of Uyghurs? What of all the other atrocities being committed around the world? Why is there *so much attention* devoted to hating Israel and seeking, not an end to the conflict, but the end of Israel? Is it just that they're a little country, an easy target to potentially dismantle, compared to the big fish of Russia and China?
Keep calling out the atrocities, by all means, but for the love of humanity maybe broaden your targets and reduce your own genocidal wishes?
Any ideology that says: "They did horrible things so 'they' [the group they belong to] all deserve to die horribly" is an evil one.

I can’t remember if you were into true crime or not, but I wanted to know your thoughts about the Gilgo Beach murderer being caught.
I do like (the ethical consumption of) true crime! I saw that they had a suspect but didn't know he'd been officially charged omg. I did see that his wife divorced him though.
It is wild to me that this case isn't covered more by true crime media considering how many victims there were, I hadn't heard about it until I saw the Netflix film maybe a year or two ago. It frustrates the absolute shit out of me that there are so many cases that if you swapped out the real victims for rich/middle class victims, they'd probably be among the most famous true crime stories of all time. But because the victims are low income or sex workers, they get maybe a tenth of the attention they should, like imagine how famous that case would've been if all the girls were Natalie Holloways or Laci Petersons.
Anyway I'm glad they're making head way and hopefully this Rex guy is the right person so the families can get some justice.

do not forget about reservations.
do not forget about the people on reservations.
when you are making and reading posts about dire predictions for quality of life, do not forget about reservations.
we already have issues accessing clean water. we already experience devastation from climate change. we are already going missing for our race. we are already being murdered for our culture.
it will only get worse.
it’s possible to live through. every single person indigenous to north america has a chance to live through this. i’m not trying to fear monger; i’m trying to remind you.
please do not forget about us when you assure people that “everything will be okay; people are living under far worse circumstances in other countries”.
people are living under far worse circumstances here. and it can get worse. and it will get worse. and we need you to remember that we’re here when it happens.
