God I am just rotating the whole scene around in my mind.
Ashton says to fearne that they’re trusting her with this because they’re the same kind of crazy, that she gets him in a way none of the rest of the group would
And I just genuinely don’t think they thought about what this would be like from her perspective. Because they’ve always been the one to throw themselves into danger and never the one left to pick up the pieces.
It’s also making me think of Ashton’s relationship with Milo- the one who’s the reason they’re alive and was more or less in the same place as fearne after Ashton died the first time- and also the fact that Ashton seems to think Milo won’t care if they’re gone.
Whether or not that’s true, I wonder how Milo felt knowing it was on them whether Ashton lived or died that first time, and how they saw him after, and if Fearne will see Ashton differently now.

There's just something so fascinating about the way the Exandrian pantheon has decided to handle the Aeor Situation™ - by electing a few of their kind to be born as mortals in order to infiltrate the city.
The first to bring herself low was Ioun, and I can only imagine how lonely that must have been for her. To feel infinite wisdom creeping into her adolescent mind? To rise through Aeor's ranks knowing what they'd do to her if the authorities discovered the truth of her existence? Waiting, hoping, perhaps even praying that the other gods would follow through with the plan.
Sarenrae has a husband and children as Trist. I can't help but consider the parallels to Liliana Temult, with a 'higher calling' pulling a mother away from her family. The conversations in the temple suggest that she would have been aware of what she was by the time she started her family. Yet she loves them, cherishes them, even knowing that she might not see them again. Will Amaris, Haylie, and Topher learn that Trist is a goddess? Or will that only be discovered when they find their way to her realm in Elysium?
The Matron was once mortal, and she willingly returned to that form in order to help her newfound siblings dismantle the Aeorian threat. Her steward since childhood was Purvan, helping raise and guide her despite his old age. Imagine being a little girl, guarded by the Champion of Ravens himself and his wolven companion, completely unaware of your own divinity until later in life. Imagine the night she woke up, remembering her ascendency, seeing Purvan and recognising him.
And what of the families that gave birth to and raised the four Betrayer Gods? What of the halfling family who watched their precocious daughter scale a fence with far too much ease than it should be? The day the tortle's parents found him crying in pain and tearing at his skin to distract himself from a memory so distant and yet so real? Or Milo, who became a priest, not to follow in the light of the Dawnfather (like his parents may have thought), but to mock his brother even as a mortal?
These gods spent entire childhoods with families and friends, taking refuge from the skirmishes caused by their other siblings. Who, despite those similarities, have very different opinions of humanity, of Aeor, and themselves.

"do you need help doing something dishonest?" "yes." i love that she just admits it and lets him do his thing. it is so interesting to me that this is a story about people but it's specifically a story about people who are confined through their own values and personhoods to individual domains. trist cannot break into this hospital because she can't bring herself to do a dishonest thing. but she understands that it is fundamentally in milo's wheelhouse, and she understands that that wheelhouse, although diametrically opposed to hers, is equally useful and important in the right circumstances. this is a family that has fought a civil war for centuries but it is also a family that understands they cannot lose each other, for losing any one of them will be detrimental to the holistically complex mortal experience

The most heartbreaking thing in this whole Downfall series, when you delve and go between the lines, is Asmodeus. He is the Lord of the Hells, the god of lies. He either lies or "he tells the truth but its rotting". He is flash frozen in a moment of burning and anger and taking the destruction coning for his family and lying that everything will be fine.
He gave the ultimatum, mortals or family. They all betrayed each other, I think, in that schism whether they meant to or not.
Asmodeus chose mortal rebirth, he was the first into the midst of danger before any of his siblings came down. Just like he stepped between them and Predathos first. He chose the Dawnfather but we don't know when, if it was before the memories trickled in and yet he felt a draw. Or if he chose to do so afterwards in a dig at his brother that he was ultimately choosing to stand with and still protect. Calling on his brother's name when he very well could have shed it all.
Sarenrae continued to reach out. Knowing the risks he poses. He lets, he bites her, he snarls. But he lets her close and gets close himself and he destroys her people, perhaps in his own way of trying to release her so they can leave. A fucked up way to love. He held the scroll, the keys. Asmodeus didn't have to warn them but he did. He gave her and the Primes a choice, destroy him or the knowledge.
In that moment, how much was fear or anger or heartbreak at the thought of what that very answer might be? Only for her to destroy that knowledge but never her brother. Was he vindicated that she could not harm him, or angry that she still would not? Or was he trying to force their hand to prove himself right that they do not love him only to be proven wrong?
Asmodeus, the god of lies who twists the truth, screaming that he hates them all, that he wants to destroy them. But leaves as he's commanded to not lie because Pelor knows his brother. Asmodeus who watches Melora embrace Gruumsh while honestly loving and missing them. Asmodeus who watches Sarenrae embrace Lolth, accepting her as she is. Asmodeus seeing Torog and Melora bonding whilst he holds himself apart but at the same time, walks Pelor and Sarenrae once more.
Asmodeus, witnessing his siblings maybe beginning to change and maybe he is scared that he hasn't. Or maybe that the human part of him has changed something. What could change a god but love or hate, and those two things as so deeply twined and bleed together.

i really love the idea of asmodeus going through maybe-anamnesis and immediately going "oh, i have the chance to do the funniest thing ever right now." and walking straight to a church of the dawnfather with the biggest shit-eating grin

purvan suul essentially raised the raven queen when she took mortal form, and consequently I am imagining zerxus being given the task of raising asmodeus' mortal form, because AUGH!!

The best thing about Father Milo is you can tell that Brennan saw all the things he wanted to do with Raphaniel that got killed in infancy because of a VERY SHOCKING TURN OF EVENTS early on in Ravening War that changed how he wanted to approach the character going forward and went “okay I know how I can avoid that EVER happening with that archetype again. I’ll just have the guy be Actually Satan.”
