It's weird but watching Mickey Atkins dissecting unhealthy fundie ideas has me realizing that
A. there are some people in the church that Act Like That and pretend that it's normal and correct and spread those ideas in talks and lessons
B. That's probably a contributor in folks thinking it's a cult bc there are literally people acting like it is.

Mickey Atkins - Why I'll Never Take a Sponsorship from BetterHelp | Therapist Explains the FTC Allegations
youtube
The long and the short of it is that your private information is not private in BetterHelp's capitalistic hands; and that they're now being sued because of this; and they have in the past threatened people like this woman for exposing their dishonesty.
So don't do business with them.

halfway through this video Mickey discusses how unhelpful and awful it is that people have been labeling others narcissists for any problematic behavior and I desperately need everyone to internalize that

i like the references to fandom psych2go incorporates into their videos and i think the animation and art can be really great to see! but holy shit they are so annoying and ableist when it comes to cluster b's it pisses me off to hell. as long as they keep being ableist i am always gonna be pissed when their videos show up on my reccommendations
contributing stigma to an already heavily stigmatized community as a channel with over 10 million subscribers is so fucking dangerous and it pisses me off that they keep getting away with it. not to mention that they apparently don't even have any professionals on the team, constantly spread misinformation and then claim to be educational. it's highly irresponsible and dangerous overall, and i hope their fans start to realize that because i am so sick of them and how much harm they're doing to so many communities around mental health

Things get even SHADIER, believe it or not.
Multiple private-practice therapists have reported finding out that their information had been copied onto a site called Caredash without their permission. These fake “profiles” on Caredash would allegedly redirect to Betterhelp.
Betterhelp is STEALING the information of private practitioners under a dummy website to funnel more people into their “services”, leeching off of legitimate therapists, and cutting off their revenue and website traffic as a result.
Betterhelp is actively running real therapists out of business.
do not use betterhelp. do not support betterhelp. do not believe betterhelp.
they:
-do not vet their therapists
-forcefully shut down negative commentary
-lie to therapists
-lie to consumers
-trap therapists in exploitative contracts
-sells users data
etc

hey this is a really really really amazing video and it goes over like all the talking points of societal fatphobia and why it's all bullshit and rooted in racism and ableism and a bunch of other stuff. It covers SO many different topics relating to fatness/fatphobia and Mickey Atkins put a ton of work into it (plus they're a licensed clinician and a fat person who knows what she's talking about). If you have a few hours and you wanna put somethin on in the background, please do so with this video!!

Video recommendation
Hello! I recommend you guys watch Mickey Atkins’ (therapist, social worker, fat activist, she/they) video called Diets & Weight Stigma are Making You Mentally Ill | Therapist Talks Fat Liberation on Youtube.
Here’s why I think you will benefit from this video:
The video helps you question the idea of weight in relation to health. It serves to show health as a multifaceted concept, which weight is only a small part of. The video acknowledges that weight shame is interconnected to other forms of discrimination such as racism and ableism.
Atkins has collected a lot of research to disprove current ideas of fatness in relation to unwellness, but also reminds us that even if fatness was unhealthy, fat people should still be treated equally. There’s also a Google Docs linked to the description of the video, where you can find studies on the topic and educate yourself further.
Topics of the video include e.g:
BMI’s creation, how it was inaccurate from the start, and what it should be used for instead.
Weight cycling and its effects on health.
A brief discussion on eating disorders in relation to e.g weight cycling.
Mentions of how capitalism benefits from weight shame.
Obesity paradox
How ”calories in, calories out” is not accurate in any way.
Discussion of the health at every size - approach.
One reoccurent theme of the video is to be critical of research and the medical community when it comes to fat bodies, because there is a lot of bias in the medical community. There is a brief talk on the video about how some research on fat bodies has been sponsored by Weight Watchers or the diet industry.
All in all, I think the video is an informative watch even if you have read a lot of books on the topic already (such as Unshrinking by Kate Manne, What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon, Body of Truth by Harriet Brown, etc.). There is some information that was brand new to me, and regardless, it’s always good to see other fat people fighting against fatphobia. Especially when they are mental health professionals.
Anyway, have a lovely day all!
